We propose a scheme to realize two-parameter estimation via a Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a symmetric triple-well potential. The three-mode NOON state is prepared adiabatically as the initial state. The two parameters to be estimated are the phase differences between the wells. The sensitivity of this estimation scheme is studied by comparing quantum and classical Fisher information matrices. As a result, we find an optimal particle number measurement method. Moreover, the precision of this estimation scheme behaves the Heisenberg scaling under the optimal measurement.
We study the effect of the acceleration of the observer on a parameter estimation protocol using NOON states. An inertial observer, Alice, prepares a NOON state in Unruh modes of the quantum field, and sends it to an accelerated observer, Rob. We calculate the quantum Fisher information of the state received by Rob. We find the counter-intuitive result that the single rail encoding outperforms the dual rail. The NOON states have an optimal $N$ for the maximum information extractable by Rob, given his acceleration. This optimal $N$ decreases with increasing acceleration.
Multi-mode NOON states have been attracting increasing attentions recently for their abilities of obtaining supersensitive and superresolved measurements for simultaneous multiple-phase estimation. In this paper, four different methods of generating multi-mode NOON states with high photon number are proposed. The first method is a linear optical approach that makes use of the Fock state filtration to reduce lower-order Fock state terms from the coherent state inputs, which are jointly combined to produce a multi-mode NOON state with the triggering of single-photon coincidence detections (SPCD)…
The simultaneous multi-parameter estimation problem using a class of multi-mode entangled states is investigated in this paper. Specifically, the problem of optical phase imaging is considered and the quantum probe is taken to be a balanced coherent superposition of components with an arbitrary quantum state in one mode and vacuum states in all the other modes, which is a generalization of the multi-mode NOON state. The analytical form for the quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) is presented, which shows the performance by providing a lower bound of the estimation uncertainty. It is shown that the…
Many researches proposed the use of the noon state as the input state for phase estimation, which is one topic of quantum metrology. This is because the input noon state provides the maximum Fisher information at the specific point. However, the Fisher information does not necessarily give the attainable bound for estimation error. In this paper, we adopt the local asymptotic mini-max criterion as well as the mini-max criterion, and show that the maximum Fisher information does not give the attainable bound for estimation error under these criteria in the phase estimation. We also propose the …
We theoretically investigate the generation of microscopic atomic NOON states, corresponding to the coherent |N,0> + |0,N> superposition with N ~ 5 particles, via collective tunneling of interacting ultracold bosonic atoms within a symmetric double-well potential in the self-trapping regime. We show that a periodic driving of the double well with suitably tuned amplitude and frequency parameters allows one to substantially boost this tunneling process without altering its collective character. The time scale to generate the NOON superposition, which corresponds to half the tunneling time and w…

In this paper, we are interested in detecting the presence of a nearby phase-sensitive object, where traveling light works out under a low-photon loss rate. Here we investigate the optimal quantum phase estimation with generalized multi-component Schrodinger cat states. In addition, we show the optimal conditions of the generalized multi-component cat states for the phase estimation in a lossless scenario. We then demonstrate that the generalized multi-component cat states can beat the performances of the NOON and two-mode squeezed vacuum states in the presence of small loss, while maintaining…
We investigate the optimal quantum state for an atomic gyroscope based on a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. In previous studies, various states such as the uncorrelated state, the BAT state and the NOON state are employed as the probe states to estimate the phase uncertainty. In this article, we present a Hermitian operator $\mathcal{H}$ and an equivalent unitary parametrization transformation to calculate the quantum Fisher information for any initial states. Exploiting this equivalent unitary parametrization transformation, we can seek the optimal state which gives the maximal quantum Fisher …
Photon counting measurements are analyzed for obtaining a classical phase parameter in linear Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI), by the use of phase estimation theories. The detailed analysis is made for four cases: a) Coherent states inserted into the interferometer. b) Fock number state inserted in one input port of the interferometer and the vacuum into the other input port. c) Coherent state inserted into one input port of the interferometer and squeezed-vacuum state in the other input port. d) Exchanging the first beam-splitter (BS1) of a MZI by a non-linear system which inserts a NOON st…
We present an improved phase estimation scheme employing entangled coherent states and demon- strate that the states give the smallest variance in the phase parameter in comparison to NOON, BAT and "optimal" states under perfect and lossy conditions. As these advantages emerge for very modest particle numbers, the optical version of entangled coherent state metrology is achievable with current technology.
We analytically investigate the sensitivity of Kerr nonlinear phase estimation in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two-mode squeezed vacuum states. We find that such a metrological scheme could access a sensitivity scaling over the Boixo \emph{et al.}'s generalized sensitivity limit [S. Boixo \emph{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 090401 (2007)], which is saturable with celebrated NOON states. We also show that parity detection is a quasioptimal measurement which can nearly saturate the quantum Cramér-Rao bound in the aforementioned situation. Moreover, we further clarify the supersens…
We derive, and experimentally demonstrate, an interferometric scheme for unambiguous phase estimation with precision scaling at the Heisenberg limit that does not require adaptive measurements. That is, with no prior knowledge of the phase, we can obtain an estimate of the phase with a standard deviation that is only a small constant factor larger than the minimum physically allowed value. Our scheme resolves the phase ambiguity that exists when multiple passes through a phase shift, or NOON states, are used to obtain improved phase resolution. Like a recently introduced adaptive technique [Hi…
Ramsey interferometry allows the estimation of the phase $ϕ$ of rotation of the pseudospin vector of an ensemble of two-state quantum systems. For $ϕ$ small, the noise-to-signal ratio scales as the spin-squeezing parameter $ξ$, with $ξ<1$ possible for an entangled ensemble. However states with minimum $ξ$ are not optimal for single-shot measurements of an arbitrary phase. We define a phase-squeezing parameter, $ζ$, which is an appropriate figure-of-merit for this case. We show that (unlike the states that minimize $ξ$), the states that minimize $ζ$ can be created by evolving an unentangled sta…
The problem of the complete transfer of quantum states and entanglement in a four qubits system composed of two single-mode cavities and two two-level atoms is investigated. The transfer of single and double excitation states is discussed for two different coupling configurations between the qubits. In the first, the coupling is mediated by the atoms that simultaneously couple to the cavity modes. In the second configuration, each atom resides inside one of the cavities and the coupling between the cavities is mediated by the overlapping field modes. A proper choice of basis states allows to i…
We derive families of optimal and near-optimal probe states for quantum estimation of the coupling constants of a general two-mode number-conserving bosonic Hamiltonian describing one-body and two-body dynamics. We find that the optimal states for estimating the dephasing of the modes, the self-interaction strength, and the contact interaction strength are related to the NOON states, whereas the optimal states for estimation of the intermode single particle tunneling amplitude are superpositions of antipodal SU(2) coherent states. For estimation of the amplitude of pair tunneling and the ampli…
The minimum error of unbiased parameter estimation is quantified by the quantum Fisher information in accordance to the Cramér-Rao bound. We indicate that only superposed NOON states by simultaneous measurements can achieve the maximum quantum Fisher information with form $<\hat{N}^{2}>$ for a given photon number distribution by a POVM in linear two-path interferometer phase measurement. We present a series of specified superposed states with infinite quantum Fisher information but with finite average photon numbers. The advantage of this unbounded quantum Fisher information will be beneficial…
We study the sensitivity of phase estimation using a generic class of path-symmetric entangled states $|φ\rangle|0\rangle+|0\rangle|φ\rangle$, where an arbitrary state $|φ\rangle$ occupies one of two modes in quantum superposition. This class of states includes the previously considered states, i.e. $NOON$ states and entangled coherent states, as special cases. With its generalization, we identify the practical limit of phase estimation under energy constraint that is characterized by the photon statistics of the component state $|φ\rangle$. We first show that quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) c…
In this letter, we show that for all the so-called path-symmetric states, the measurement of parity of photon number at the output of an optical interferometer achieves maximal phase sensitivity at the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. Such optimal phase sensitivity with parity is attained at a suitable bias phase, which can be determined a priori. Our scheme is applicable for local phase estimation.
We investigate the parameter estimation in a magnon-cavity-magnon coupled system. PT symmetrical two magnons system can be formed in the gain magnetic materials by the adiabatic elimination of the cavity field mode. We show that the optimal estimation will not appear at the exceptional point due to that the quantum fluctuations are the strongest at the exceptional point. Moreover, we demonstrate that the measurements at the exceptional point tend to be optimal with the increase of prepared time. And the direct photon detection is the optimal measurement for the initial state in the vacuum inpu…
Classical and quantum theories of time-symmetric smoothing, which can be used to optimally estimate waveforms in classical and quantum systems, are derived using a discrete-time approach, and the similarities between the two theories are emphasized. Application of the quantum theory to homodyne phase-locked loop design for phase estimation with narrowband squeezed optical beams is studied. The relation between the proposed theory and Aharonov et al.'s weak value theory is also explored.
We study the geometric measure of entanglement (GM) of pure symmetric states related to rank-one positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) and establish a general connection with quantum state estimation theory, especially the maximum likelihood principle. Based on this connection, we provide a method for computing the GM of these states and demonstrate its additivity property under certain conditions. In particular, we prove the additivity of the GM of pure symmetric multiqubit states whose Majorana points under Majorana representation are distributed within a half sphere, including all pure …
Quantum parameter estimation has many applications, from gravitational wave detection to quantum key distribution. We present the first experimental demonstration of the time-symmetric technique of quantum smoothing. We consider both adaptive and non-adaptive quantum smoothing, and show that both are better than their well-known time-asymmetric counterparts (quantum filtering). For the problem of estimating a stochastically varying phase shift on a coherent beam, our theory predicts that adaptive quantum smoothing (the best scheme) gives an estimate with a mean-square error up to $2\sqrt{2}$ t…
Measurement underpins all quantitative science. A key example is the measurement of optical phase, used in length metrology and many other applications. Advances in precision measurement have consistently led to important scientific discoveries. At the fundamental level, measurement precision is limited by the number N of quantum resources (such as photons) that are used. Standard measurement schemes, using each resource independently, lead to a phase uncertainty that scales as 1/sqrt(N) - known as the standard quantum limit. However, it has long been conjectured that it should be possible to …

The quantum smoothing theory [Tsang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 250403 (2009); Phys. Rev. A, in press (e-print arXiv:0906.4133)] is extended to account for discrete jumps in the classical random process to be estimated, discrete variables in the quantum system, such as spin, angular momentum, and photon number, and Poissonian measurements, such as photon counting. The extended theory is used to model atomic magnetometers and study Hardy's paradox in phase space. In the phase-space picture of Hardy's proposed experiment, the negativity of the predictive Wigner distribution is identified as the culpr…
We present a scheme for an integrated four-wave mixing source of narrow-band path-entangled photon pairs with efficient spatial pump self-rejection. The scheme is based on correlated loss in a system of waveguides in Kerr nonlinear media. We demonstrate that this setup allows for upwards of 100dB pump rejection, without additional filtering. The effect is reached by driving the symmetric collective mode that is strongly attenuated by an engineered dissipation, while photon pairs are born in the antisymmetric mode. A similar set-up can additionally be realized for generation of two-photon NOON …
It is widely accepted that the selection of measurement bases can affect the efficiency of quantum state estimation methods, precision of estimating an unknown state can be improved significantly by simply introduce a set of symmetrical measurement bases. Here we compare the efficiencies of estimations with different numbers of measurement bases by numerical simulation and experiment in optical system. The advantages of using a complete set of symmetrical measurement bases are illustrated more clearly.
Information metrics give lower bounds for the estimation of parameters. The Cencov-Morozova-Petz Theorem classifies the monotone quantum Fisher metrics. The optimum bound for the quantum estimation problem is offered by the metric which is obtained from the symmetric logarithmic derivative. To get a better bound, it means to go outside this family of metrics, and thus inevitably, to relax some general conditions. In the paper we defined logarithmic derivatives through a phase-space correspondence. This introduces a function which quantifies the deviation from the symmetric derivative. Using th…
We have studied theoretical un-symmetric multi-photon subtracted twin beam state and demonstrated a method for generating states that resembles to high photon number states with the increase in the number of subtracted photons through Wigner distribution function, which can be reconstructed experimentally by Homodyne measurement. A crucial point is high non-classicality is obtained by photon subtraction when mean photons per mode of twin beam state is low. We have calculated photon statistics from the phase space distribution function and found sub-poissonian behaviour in the same low mean pho…
We derive a tight upper bound for the fidelity of a universal N to M qubit cloner, valid for any M \geq N, where the output of the cloner is required to be supported on the symmetric subspace. Our proof is based on the concatenation of two cloners and the connection between quantum cloning and quantum state estimation. We generalise the operation of a quantum cloner to mixed and/or entangled input qubits described by a density matrix supported on the symmetric subspace of the constituent qubits. We also extend the validity of optimal state estimation methods to inputs of this kind.
We establish a connection between optimal quantum cloning and optimal state estimation for d-dimensional quantum systems. In this way we derive an upper limit on the fidelity of state estimation for d-dimensional pure quantum states and, furthermore, for generalized inputs supported on the symmetric subspace.
We investigate phase and frequency estimation with different measurement strategies under the effect of collective phase noise. First, we consider the standard linear estimation scheme and present an experimentally realisable optimization of the initial probe states by collective rotations. We identify the optimal rotation angle for different measurement times. Second, we show that sub-shot noise sensitivity - up to the Heisenberg limit - can be reached in presence of collective phase noise by using differential interferometry, where one part of the system is used to monitor the noise. For thi…
It is shown that the condition for achieving the quantum Cramer-Rao bound of phase estimation in conventional two-path interferometers is that the state is symmetric with regard to an (unphysical) exchange of the two paths. Since path symmetry is conserved under phase shifts, the maximal phase sensitivity can be achieved at arbitrary bias phases, indicating that path symmetric states can achieve their quantum Cramer-Rao bound in Bayesian estimates of a completely unknown phase.
We search for the optimal quantum pure states of identical bosonic particles for applications in quantum metrology, in particular in the estimation of a single parameter for the generic two-mode interferometric setup. We consider the general case in which the total number of particles is fluctuating around an average $N$ with variance $ΔN^2$. By recasting the problem in the framework of classical probability, we clarify the maximal accuracy attainable and show that it is always larger than the one reachable with a fixed number of particles (i.e., $ΔN=0$). In particular, for larger fluctuations…
Starting from a simple estimation problem, here we propose a general approach for decoding quantum measurements from the perspective of information extraction. By virtue of the estimation fidelity only, we provide surprisingly simple characterizations of rank-1 projective measurements, mutually unbiased measurements, and symmetric informationally complete measurements. Notably, our conclusions do not rely on any assumption on the rank, purity, or the number of measurement outcomes, and we do not need bases to start with. Our work demonstrates that all these elementary quantum measurements are …
