In this paper we propose an accurate, and computationally efficient method for incorporating adaptive spatial resolution into weakly-compressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) schemes. Particles are adaptively split and merged in an accurate manner. Critically, the method ensures that the number of neighbors of each particle is optimal, leading to an efficient algorithm. A set of background particles is used to specify either geometry-based spatial resolution, where the resolution is a function of distance to a solid body, or solution-based adaptive resolution, where the resolution is a function of the computed solution. This allows us to simulate problems using particles having length variations of the order of 1:250 with much fewer particles than currently reported with other techniques. The method is designed to automatically adapt when any solid bodies move. The algorithms employed are fully parallel. We consider a suite of benchmark problems to demonstrate the accuracy of the approach. We then consider the classic problem of the flow past a circular cylinder at a range of Reynolds numbers and show that the proposed method produces accurate results with a significantly reduced number of particles. We provide an open source implementation and a fully reproducible manuscript.
Weakly-compressible particle-based discretization methods, utilized for the solution of the subsonic Navier-Stokes equation, are gaining increasing popularity in the fluid dynamics community. One of the most popular among these methods is the weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH). Since the dynamics of a single numerical particle is determined by fluid dynamic transport equations, the particle per definition should represent a homogeneous fluid element. However, it can be easily argued that a single particle behaves only pseudo-Lagrangian as it is affected by volume parti…
We study conformal invariance of vorticity clusters in weakly compressible two-dimensional turbulence at low Mach numbers. On the basis of very high resolution direct numerical simulation we demonstrate the scaling invariance of the inverse cascade with scaling close to Kolmogorov prediction. In this range of scales, the statistics of zero-vorticity isolines are found to be compatible with those of critical percolation, thus generalizing the results obtained in incompressible Navier-Stokes turbulence.
In our recent works we proposed a theory of turbulence in inertial gas flow via the mean field effect of an intermolecular potential. We found that, in inertial flow, turbulence indeed spontaneously develops from a laminar initial condition, just as observed in nature and experiments. However, we also found that density and temperature in our inertial flow model behave unrealistically. The goal of the current work is to demonstrate technical possibility of modeling compressible, turbulent flow at low Mach number where both density and temperature behave in a more realistic fashion. Here we foc…
A scheme for the solution of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with weakly compressible flows is proposed in this work. A novel hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method is derived for the discretization of the fluid equations, while the standard continuous Galerkin (CG) approach is adopted for the structural problem. The chosen HDG solver combines robustness of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approaches in advection-dominated flows with higher order accuracy and efficient implementations. Two coupling strategies are examined in this contribution, namely a partitioned Dirichlet-Neu…

Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence affects both terrestrial and astrophysical plasmas. The properties of magnetized turbulence must be better understood to more accurately characterize these systems. This work presents ideal MHD simulations of the compressible Taylor-Green vortex under a range of initial sub-sonic Mach numbers and magnetic field strengths. We find that regardless of the initial field strength, the magnetic energy becomes dominant over the kinetic energy on all scales after at most several dynamical times. The spectral indices of the kinetic and magnetic energy spectra become shall…
Off-lattice Boltzmann methods increase the flexibility and applicability of lattice Boltzmann methods by decoupling the discretizations of time, space, and particle velocities. However, the velocity sets that are mostly used in off-lattice Boltzmann simulations were originally tailored to on-lattice Boltzmann methods. In this contribution, we show how the accuracy and efficiency of weakly and fully compressible semi-Lagrangian off-lattice Boltzmann simulations is increased by velocity sets derived from cubature rules, i.e. multivariate quadratures, which have not been produced by the Gauss-pro…
We perform particle-resolved simulations of subsonic and transonic flows past random arrays of spherical particles. The Reynolds number is held at $Re{\approx}300$ to ensure the flow remains in the continuum regime. At low volume fractions, the drag force increases sharply near a critical Mach number due to the formation of shock waves and reaches a maximum value when the bulk flow is supersonic. Neighbour-induced hydrodynamic interactions reduce the critical Mach number at higher volume fractions. An effective Mach number is introduced to capture the increase in compressibility effects on dra…
This paper develops a consistent particle method for capturing the highly non-linear behavior of violent free-surface flows, based on an Enhanced Weakly Compressible Moving Particle Semi-implicit (EWC-MPS) method. It pays special attention to the evaluation and improvement of two particle regularization techniques, namely, pairwise particle collision (PC) and particle shifting (PS). To improve the effectiveness of PC in removing noisy pressure field, and volume conservation issue of PS, we propose and evaluate several enhancements to these techniques, including a novel dynamic PC technique, an…
The Weakly-Compressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method is a Lagrangian method that is typically used for the simulation of incompressible fluids. While developing an SPH-based scheme or solver, researchers often verify their code with exact solutions, solutions from other numerical techniques, or experimental data. This typically requires a significant amount of computational effort and does not test the full capabilities of the solver. Furthermore, often this does not yield insights on the convergence of the solver. In this paper we introduce the method of manufactured solutio…

The use of adaptive spatial resolution to simulate flows of practical interest using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is of considerable importance. Recently, Muta and Ramachandran [1] have proposed an efficient adaptive SPH method which is capable of handling large changes in particle resolution. This allows the authors to simulate problems with much fewer particles than was possible earlier. The method was not demonstrated or tested with moving bodies or multiple bodies. In addition, the original method employed a large number of background particles to determine the spatial resolution …

Within the framework of diffuse interface methods, we derive a pressure-based Baer-Nunziato type model well-suited to weakly compressible multiphase flows. The model can easily deal with different equation of states and it includes relaxation terms characterized by user-defined finite parameters, which drive the pressure and velocity of each phase toward the equilibrium. There is no clear notion of speed of sound, and thus, most of the classical low Mach approximation cannot easily be cast in this context. The proposed solution strategy consists of two operators: a semi-implicit finite-volume …
This paper proposes and validates two new particle regularization techniques for the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) numerical method to improve its stability and accuracy for free surface flow simulations. We introduce a general form of the Dynamic pair-wise Particle Collision (DPC) regularization technique that we recently proposed in the context of the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method in [1]. The DPC coupled with the standard Particle Shifting (PS) technique has given rise to a hybrid approach that we propose to alleviate particle clustering issues in the free-surface and sp…
We establish the global-in-time existence of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the full Navier-Stokes equations for compressible heat-conducting flow in multidimensions with initial data that are large, discontinuous, spherically symmetric, and away from the vacuum. The solutions obtained here are of global finite total relative-energy including the origin, while cavitation may occur as balls centred at the origin of symmetry for which the interfaces between the fluid and the vacuum must be upper semi-continuous in space-time in the Eulerian coordinates. On any region strictly away from the …
