In this paper, we model the planar motion of a quadcopter, and develop a linear model of the same. We perform stability analysis of the open loop system and develop a PD controller for its position control. We compare the closed loop response between the linear and non linear systems using the controller developed for the linear system. We also perform stability analysis for the linear and non linear systems, and compare the PD controller with modern deep neural methods based on reinforcement learning actor-critic networks.
Researchers have developed various cascaded controllers and non-cascaded controllers for the navigation and control of quadrotors in recent years. It is vital to ensure the safety of a quadrotor both in normal state and in abnormal state if a controller tends to make the quadrotor unsafe. To this end, this paper proposes a non-cascaded Control Barrier Function (CBF) for a quadrotor controlled by either cascaded controllers or a non-cascaded controller. Incorporated with a Quadratic Programming (QP), the non-cascaded CBF can simultaneously regulate the magnitude of the total thrust and the torq…
In the paper "Control Design for UAV Quadrotors via Embedded Model Control" [1], the authors designed a complete control unit for a UAV Quadrotor, based on the Embedded Model Control (EMC) methodology, in combination with the Feedback Linearization (FL); when applied to non-linear systems. Specifically, [1] proposes to use the FL as a novel way to design the internal model for the EMC state and disturbance predictor. To support the treatise in [1], in this report the feedback-linearized model of the UAV quadrotor leveraged in [1] is step-by-step derived.
The paper solves the problem of tracking control of a quadrotor with unmeasurable pitch and roll angles based on the geometric approach with the use of the enhanced extended observer and the internal model. The proposed approach makes it possible to ensure the movement of a quadrotor in a horizontal plane along a trajectory given in the form of a sinusoidal or second-order polynomial function with semiglobal asymptotic convergence of the tracking errors to zero.
Robust adaptive model predictive control (RAMPC) is a novel control method that combines robustness guarantees with respect to unknown parameters and bounded disturbances into a model predictive control scheme. However, RAMPC has so far only been developed in theory. The goal of this paper is to apply RAMPC to a physical quadrotor experiment. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that RAMPC has been applied in practice using a state space formulation. In doing so, we highlight important practical challenges such as computation of $λ$-contractive polytopes and dealing with measure…

This paper introduces an analytical framework for the derivation of hybrid equations of motion of a flexible quadrotor. This approach helps obtain rigid and elastic equations of motion simultaneously, in a decoupled form, which facilitates the controller design. A delay-dependent stability condition is obtained for the overall system dynamics, including the operator with reaction time delay, the adaptive controller and the flexible quadrotor dynamics. Two different adaptive controllers are implemented to address the uncertainties. It is demonstrated via simulations that the flexible arm tip os…
This paper introduces an $\mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive control augmentation for geometric tracking control of quadrotors. In the proposed design, the $\mathcal{L}_1$ augmentation handles nonlinear (time- and state-dependent) uncertainties in the quadrotor dynamics without assuming or enforcing parametric structures, while the baseline geometric controller achieves stabilization of the known nonlinear model of the system dynamics. The $\mathcal{L}_1$ augmentation applies to both the rotational and the translational dynamics. Experimental results demonstrate that the augmented geometric controller sh…
This paper presents a mathematic dynamic model of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (QUAV) by using the symbolic regression approach and then proposes a hierarchical control scheme for trajectory tracking. The symbolic regression approach is capable of constructing analytical quadrotor dynamic equations only through the collected data, which relieves the burden of first principle modeling. To facilitate position tracking control of a QUAV, the design of controller can be decomposed into two parts: a proportional-integral controller for the position subsystem is first designed to obtain the d…
With quadrotors becoming immensely popular in applications such as relief operations, infrastructure maintenance etc., a key control design challenge arises when the quadrotor has to manoeuvre through constrained spaces during various operational scenarios: for example, inspecting a pipeline within predefined velocity and space, dropping relief material at a precise location under tight spaces etc., under the face of parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. To tackle such scenarios, a controller needs to ensure a predefined tracking accuracy so as not to violate the constraints whil…
In this article we design a backstepping control law based on geometric principles to swing up a spherical pendulum mounted on a moving quadrotor. The available degrees of freedom in the control vector also permit us to position the plane of the quadrotor parallel to the ground. The problem addressed here is, indeed, novel and has many practical applications which arise during the transport of a payload mounted on top of a quadrotor. The modeling and control law are coordinate-free and thus avoid singularity issues. The geometric treatment of the problem greatly simplifies both the modeling an…
This paper proposes a solution to the attitude tracking problem for a novel quadrotor tailsitter unmanned aerial vehicle called swiveling biplane quadrotor. The proposed vehicle design addresses the lack of yaw control authority in conventional biplane quadrotor tailsitters by proposing a new design wherein two wings with two attached propellers are joined together with a rod through a swivel mechanism. The yaw torque is generated by relative rotation of the thrust vector of each wing. The unique design of this configuration having two rigid bodies interconnected through a rod with zero torsio…
The utilisation of unmanned aerial vehicles has witnessed significant growth in real-world applications including surveillance tasks, military missions, and transportation deliveries. This letter investigates practical problems of formation control for multiple nano-quadrotor systems. To be more specific, the first aim of this work is to develop a theoretical framework for the time-varying formation flight of the multi-quadrotor system regarding anti-collisions. In order to achieve this goal, the finite cut-off potential function is devoted to avoiding collisions among vehicles in the group as…
Micro aerial vehicles are widely being researched and employed due to their relative low operation costs and high flexibility in various applications. We study the under-actuated quadrotor perching problem, designing a trajectory planner and controller which generates feasible trajectories and drives quadrotors to desired state in state space. This paper proposes a trajectory generating and tracking method for quadrotor perching that takes the advantages of reinforcement learning controller and traditional controller. The trained low-level reinforcement learning controller would manipulate qua…
This paper presents a simulation-based comparison between the two controllers, Proportional Integral Derivative (PID), a classical controller and Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), an optimal controller, for a linearized quadrotor model. To simplify an otherwise complicated dynamic model of a quadrotor, we derive a linear mathematical model using Newtonian and Euler's laws and applying basic principles of physics. This derivation gives the equations that govern the motion of a quadrotor, both concerning the body frame and the inertial frame. A state-space model is developed, which is then used …
We present a trajectory tracking controller for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) configured on $SU(2)\times R^3$, and relate this result to a family of geometric tracking controllers on $SO(3)\times R^3$. The theoretical results are complemented by simulation examples, and the controller is subsequently implemented in practice and integrated with a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system through an extended Kalman filter (EKF). This facilitates the operation of the UAV without external motion capture systems, and we demonstrate that the proposed control system can be used …
We propose a control protocol based on the prescribed performance control (PPC) methodology for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Quadrotor systems belong to the class of underactuated systems for which the original PPC methodology cannot be directly applied. We introduce the necessary design modifications to stabilize the considered system with prescribed performance. The proposed control protocol does not use any information of dynamic model parameters or exogenous disturbances. Furthermore, the stability analysis guarantees that the tracking errors remain inside of designer-specifi…

In this work, the autonomous control of a quadrotor-manipulator unmanned aerial vehicle is treated using an extended dynamic model. Due to persistent aerodynamic disturbances and dynamic couplings, the control of a quadrotor-manipulator unit is cumbersome. Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is proposed for the cancellation of the undesirable dynamics while a PD controller is developed for set-point tracking. Parameters were tuned using Gradient Descent-Sequential Quadratic Programming in Simulink design optimization

Over the past several decades there has been a constant increase in the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Hence, there has also been a growth in the number of control algorithms to service the many applications embodied by these vehicles. Initially UAS were made popular by the military for Reconnaissance, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition (RISTA) applications. Now-a-days UAS are used for everything from crop surveys to tourism. Nowhere is this more evident than with multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This paper presents a survey of control methods for multi-rotor s…
We present a new quadrotor geometric control scheme that is capable of tracking highly aggressive trajectories. Our geometric controller uses the logarithmic map of SO(3) to express rotational error in the Lie algebra, and we show that it is globally attractive without requiring a complicated hybrid switching scheme. We show the performance of our controller against highly aggressive trajectories in simulation experiments. Additionally, we present an adaptation of this controller that allows us to interface effectively with the angular rate controllers on an onboard flight control unit and sho…
In this paper, we propose a Koopman operator based approach to describe the nonlinear dynamics of a quadrotor on SE(3) in terms of an infinite-dimensional linear system which evolves in the space of observable functions (lifted space) and which is more appropriate for control design purposes. The major challenge when using the Koopman operator is the characterization of a set of observable functions that can span the lifted space. Recent methods either use tools from machine learning to learn the observable functions or guess a suitable set of observables that best describes the nonlinear dyna…
Experimental flight tests are reported about quadrotors UAVs via a recent model-free control (MFC) strategy, which is easily implementable. We show that it is possible to achieve acrobatic rate control of the UAV, which is beyond the previous standard. The same remote controller is tested on two physical vehicles without any re-tuning. It produces in both cases low tracking error. We show that MFC is robust even when the quadrotor is highly damaged. A video footage can be found at: https://youtu.be/wtSLalA4szc
In this paper, we design a hybrid controller that globally exponentially stabilizes a system evolving on the n-dimensional sphere, denoted by Sn. This hybrid controller is induced by a synergistic collection of potential functions on Sn. We propose a particular construction of this class of functions that generates flows along geodesics of the sphere, providing convergence to the desired reference with minimal path length. We show that the proposed strategy is suitable to the exponential stabilization of a quadrotor vehicle.
In order to further expand the flight envelope of quadrotors under actuator failures, we design a nonlinear sensor-based fault-tolerant controller to stabilize a quadrotor with failure of two opposing rotors in the high-speed flight condition (> 8m/s). The incremental nonlinear dynamic inversion (INDI) approach which excels in handling model uncertainties is adopted to compensate for the significant unknown aerodynamic effects. The internal dynamics of such an underactuated system have been analyzed, and subsequently stabilized by re-defining the control output. The proposed method can be gene…
This study has developed a fault-tolerant controller that is able to recover a quadrotor from arbitrary initial orientations and angular velocities, despite the complete failure of a rotor. This cascaded control method includes a position/altitude controller, an almost-global convergence attitude controller, and a control allocation method based on quadratic programming. As a major novelty, a constraint of undesirable angular velocity is derived and fused into the control allocator, which significantly improves the recovery performance. For validation, we have conducted a set of Monte-Carlo si…
