Wheeler's conjectured "spacetime foam" -- large quantum fluctuations of spacetime at the Planck scale -- could have important implications for quantum gravity, perhaps even explaining why the cosmological constant seems so small. Here I explore this problem in a midisuperspace model consisting of metrics with local spherical symmetry. Classically, an infinite class of ``foamy'' initial data can be constructed, in which cancellations between expanding and contracting regions lead to a small average expansion even if $Λ$ is large. Quantum mechanically, the model admits corresponding stationary states, for which the probability current is also nearly zero. These states appear to describe a self-reproducing spacetime foam with very small average expansion, effectively hiding the cosmological constant.
Perhaps the cosmological constant really is huge at the Planck scale, but is "hidden" by Planck scale quantum fluctuations of spacetime. I briefly review this proposal and provide some evidence, coming from a simplified midisuperspace model, that an appropriate "foamy" structure can do the job of hiding a large cosmological constant, and can persist under time evolution.
We investigate the canonical quantization in the framework of N=1 simple supergravity for the case of a very simple gravitational midisuperspace described by Gowdy $T^3$ cosmological models. We consider supersymmetric quantum cosmology in the mentioned midisuperspace, where a matrix representation for the gravitino covector--spinor is used. The full Lorentz constraint and its implications for the wave function of the universe are analyzed in detail. We found that there are indeed physical states in the midisuperspace sector of the theory in contrast to the case of minisuperspace where there ex…
We investigate the canonical quantization of supergravity N=1 in the case of a midisuperspace described by Gowdy $T^3$ cosmological models. The quantum constraints are analyzed and the wave function of the universe is derived explicitly. Unlike the minisuperspace case, we show the existence of physical states in midisuperspace models. The analysis of the wave function of the universe leads to the conclusion that the classical curvature singularity present in the evolution of Gowdy models is removed at the quantum level due to the presence of the Rarita-Schwinger field.
A simple model of spacetime foam, made by $N$ wormholes in a semiclassical approximation, is taken under examination. The Casimir-like energy of the quantum fluctuation of such a model and its probability of being realized are computed. Implications on the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the cosmological constant are considered.

This paper summarizes the contribution presented at the IX Marcel Grossmann Meeting (Rome, July 2000). A simple model of spacetime foam, made by $N$ Schwarzschild wormholes in a semiclassical approximation, is here proposed. The Casimir-like energy of the quantum fluctuation of such a model and its probability of being realized are computed. Implications on the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the cosmological constant are considered. A proposal for an alternative foamy model formed by $N$ Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter wormholes is here considered.
We study the quantum deformation of the Barrett-Crane Lorentzian spin foam model which is conjectured to be the discretization of Lorentzian Plebanski model with positive cosmological constant and includes therefore as a particular sector quantum gravity in de-Sitter space. This spin foam model is constructed using harmonic analysis on the quantum Lorentz group. The evaluation of simple spin networks are shown to be non commutative integrals over the quantum hyperboloid defined as a pile of fuzzy spheres. We show that the introduction of the cosmological constant removes all the infrared diver…
We examine the four dimensional path integral for Euclidean quantum gravity in the context of the EPRL-FK spin foam model. The state sum is restricted to certain symmetric configurations which resembles the geometry of a flat homogeneous and isotropic universe. The vertex structure is specially chosen so that a basic concept of expansion and contraction of the lattice universe is allowed. We compute the asymptotic form of the spin foam state sum in the symmetry restricted setting, and recover a Regge-type action, as well as an explicit form of the Hessian matrix, which captures quantum correct…
In the saddle point approximation, the Euclidean path integral for quantum gravity closely resembles a thermodynamic partition function, with the cosmological constant $Λ$ playing the role of temperature and the ``density of topologies'' acting as an effective density of states. For $Λ<0$, the density of topologies grows superexponentially, and the sum over topologies diverges. In thermodynamics, such a divergence can signal the existence of a maximum temperature. The same may be true in quantum gravity: the effective cosmological constant may be driven to zero by a rapid rise in the density o…
A simple model of spacetime foam, made by spherically symmetric wormholes, with or without a cosmological term is proposed. The black hole area quantization and its consequences are examined in this context. We open the possibility of probing Lorentz symmetry in this picture.
We conjecture that the neutral black hole pair production is related to the vacuum fluctuation of pure gravity via the Casimir-like energy. A generalization of this process to a multi-black hole pair is considered. Implications on the foam-like structure of spacetime and on the cosmological constant are discussed.
The entropy for a black hole in a de Sitter space is approached within the framework of spacetime foam. A simple model, made by $N$ wormholes in a semiclassical approximation, is taken under examination to compute the entropy for such a case. An extension to the extreme case when the black hole and cosmological horizons are equal is discussed.
We propose a new systematic approach that allows one to derive the spin foam (state sum) model of a theory starting from the corresponding classical action functional. It can be applied to any theory whose action can be written as that of the BF theory plus a functional of the B field. Examples of such theories include BF theories with or without cosmological term, Yang-Mills theories and gravity in various spacetime dimensions. Our main idea is two-fold. First, we propose to take into account in the path integral certain distributional configurations of the B field in which it is concentrated…
In this paper we perform the calculation of the spectral dimension of the space-time in 3d quantum gravity using the dynamics of the Ponzano-Regge vertex (PR) and its quantum group generalization (Turaev-Viro model (TV)). We realize this considering a very simple decomposition of the 3d space-time and introducing a boundary state which selects a classical geometry on the boundary. We obtain that the spectral dimension of the space-time runs from 2 to 3, across a 1.5 phase, when the energy of a probe scalar field decreases from high to low energy. For the TV model the spectral dimension at high…
Spacetime foam manifests itself in a variety of ways. It has some attributes of a turbulent fluid. It is the source of the holographic principle. Cosmologically it may play a role in explaining why the energy density has the critical value, why dark energy/matter exists, and why the effective dynamical cosmological constant has the value as observed. Astrophysically the physics of spacetime foam helps to elucidate why the critical acceleration in modified Newtonian dynamics has the observed value; and it provides a possible connection between global physics and local galactic dynamics involvin…
We show how super BF theory in any dimension can be quantized as a spin foam model, generalizing the situation for ordinary BF theory. This is a first step toward quantizing supergravity theories. We investigate in particular 3-dimensional (p=1,q=1) supergravity which we quantize exactly. We obtain a super-Ponzano-Regge model with gauge group OSp(1|2). A main motivation for our approach is the implementation of fermionic degrees of freedom in spin foam models. Indeed, we propose a description of the fermionic degrees of freedom in our model. Complementing the path integral approach we also dis…
We explore the structure of the spin foam-like vertex expansion in loop quantum cosmology and discuss properties of the corresponding amplitudes, with the aim of elucidating some of the expansion's useful properties and features. We find that the expansion is best suited for consideration of conceptual questions and for investigating short-time, highly quantum behavior. In order to study dynamics at cosmological scales, the expansion must be carried to very high order, limiting its direct utility as a calculational tool for such questions. Conversely, it is unclear that the expansion can be tr…
In this article, we consider an ad-hoc deformation of the EPRL model for quantum gravity by a cosmological constant term. This sort of deformation has been first introduced by Han for the case of the $4$-simplex. In this article, we generalise the deformation to the case of arbitrary vertices, and compute its large-$j$-asymptotics. We show that, if the boundary data corresponds to a $4d$ polyhedron $P$, then the asymptotic formula gives the usual Regge action plus a cosmological constant term. We pay particular attention to the determinant of the Hessian matrix, and show that it can be related…
In this paper, we address the problem of the dynamics in three dimensional loop quantum gravity with zero cosmological constant. We construct a rigorous definition of Rovelli's generalized projection operator from the kinematical Hilbert space--corresponding to the quantization of the infinite dimensional kinematical configuration space of the theory--to the physical Hilbert space. In particular, we provide the definition of the physical scalar product which can be represented in terms of a sum over (finite) spin-foam amplitudes. Therefore, we establish a clear-cut connection between the canon…
In recent years, the calculation of the first non-vanishing order of the metric 2-point function or graviton propagator in a semiclassical limit has evolved as a standard test for the credibility of a proposed spin foam model. The existing results of spinfoam graviton propagator rely heavily on the so-called double scaling limit where spins $j$ are large and the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $γ$ is small such that the area $A\propto jγ$ is approximately constant. However, it seems that this double scaling limit is bound to break down in models including a cosmological constant. We explore this in …
Considering the Barrett-Crane spin foam model for quantum gravity with (positive) cosmological constant, we show that speeds must be quantized and we investigate the physical implications of this effect such as the emergence of an effective deformed Poincare symmetry.
It is argued that the fundamental length scale for the quantum dynamics of spacetime need not be equal to the Planck length. Possibly, this new length scale is related to a nonvanishing cosmological constant or vacuum energy density.
Due to quantum fluctuations, probed at small scales, spacetime is very complicated -- something akin in complexity to a turbulent froth which the late John Wheeler dubbed quantum foam, aka spacetime foam. Our recent work suggests that (1) we may be close to being able to detect quantum foam with extragalactic sources once the Very Large Telescope Interferometers (VLTI) are fully operational; (2) dark energy is arguably a cosmological manifestation of quantum foam, the constituents of which obey infinite statistics; (3) in the gravitational context, turbulence is closely related to holographic …
Naive calculations in quantum field theory suggest that vacuum fluctuations should induce an enormous cosmological constant. What if these estimates are right? I argue that even a huge cosmological constant might be hidden in Planck scale fluctuations of geometry and topology---what Wheeler called `spacetime foam'---while remaining virtually invisible macroscopically.
Popular approaches to quantum gravity describe black hole microstates differently and apply different statistics to count them. Since the relationship between the approaches is not clear, this obscures the role of statistics in calculating the black hole entropy. We address this issue by discussing the entropy of eternal AdS black holes in dimension four and above within the context of a midisuperspace model. We determine the black hole eigenstates and find that they describe the quantization in half integer units of a certain function of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass and the cosmologic…
We study the quantum group deformation of the Lorentzian EPRL spin-foam model. The construction uses the harmonic analysis on the quantum Lorentz group. We show that the quantum group spin-foam model so defined is free of the infra-red divergence, thus gives a finite partition function on a fixed triangulation. We expect this quantum group spin-foam model is a spin-foam quantization of discrete gravity with a cosmological constant.
Hawking's spacetime foam model predicts that due to quantum fluctuations, spacetime is filled with black hole like objects. We argue that Hawking's model implies a cosmological constant of the observed order and that it can also be used to solve the problem of time in quantum gravity.
Multidimensional cosmological model with the topology M=RxM_1xM_2x...xM_n where M_i (i=1,... ,n) undergo a chain splitting into arbitrary number of compact spaces is considered. It is shown that equations of motion can be solved exactly because they depend only on the effective curvatures and dimensions and "forget" about inner topological structure. It is proved that effective cosmological action for the model with n=1 in the case of infinite splitting of the internal space coincides with the tree-level effective action for a bosonic string.
A recent preprint by Wang and Unruh [arXiv:1911.06110] contains a number of criticisms of my paper, "Hiding the cosmological constant" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123 (2019) 131302, arXiv:1809.08277]. While Wang and Unruh suggest an interesting alternative scenario and raise an important conceptual question, most of their criticisms are incorrect, in part because of misunderstandings about averaging and about the nature of the "foamy" spacetimes considered in my paper.
I consider the formulation of hybrid cosmological models that consists of a classical gravitational field interacting with a quantized massive scalar field in the formalism of ensembles on configuration space. This is a viable approach that provides an alternative to semiclassical gravity. I discuss a particular, highly nonclassical solution in two approximations, minisuperspace and spherically-symmetric midisuperspace. In both cases, the coupling of the quantum scalar field and classical gravitational field leads to a cosmological model which has a quantized radius of the universe.
The possibility is raised that the observed cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry may reside in asymmetric space-time fluctuations and their interplay with the Stckelberg-Feynman interpretation of antimatter. The presented thesis also suggests that the effect of space-time fluctuations is to diminish the fine structure constant in the past. Recent studies of the QSO absorption lines provide a 4.1 standard deviation support for this prediction. Our considerations suggest that in the presence of space-time fluctuations, the principle of local gauge invariance, and the related notion of parall…
We point out that the standard formulation of the cosmological constant problem itself is problematic since it is trying to apply the very large scale homogeneous cosmological model to very small (Planck) scale phenomenon. At small scales, both the spacetime and the vacuum stress energy are highly inhomogeneous and wildly fluctuating. This is a version of Wheeler's "spacetime foam". We show that this "foamy" structure would produce a large positive contribution to the average macroscopic spatial curvature of the Universe. In order to cancel this contribution to match the observation, the usual…
We use two simple independent gedankan experiments to show that the holographic principle can be understood intuitively as having its origin in the quantum fluctuations of spacetime. Applied to cosmology, this consideration leads to a dynamical cosmological constant of the observed magnitude, a result that can also be obtained for the present and recent cosmic eras by using unimodular gravity and causal set theory. Next we generalize the concept of gravitational thermodynamics to a spacetime with positive cosmological constant (like ours) to reveal the natural emergence, in galactic dynamics, …
Due to quantum fluctuations, spacetime is probably ``foamy'' on very small scales. We propose to detect this texture of spacetime foam by looking for core-halo structures in the images of distant quasars. We find that the Very Large Telescope interferometer will be on the verge of being able to probe the fabric of spacetime when it reaches its design performance. Our method also allows us to use spacetime foam physics and physics of computation to infer the existence of dark energy/matter, independent of the evidence from recent cosmological observations.
We formulate the spin foam perturbation theory for three-dimensional Euclidean Quantum Gravity with a cosmological constant. We analyse the perturbative expansion of the partition function in the dilute-gas limit and we argue that the Baez conjecture stating that the number of possible distinct topological classes of perturbative configurations is finite for the set of all triangulations of a manifold, is not true. However, the conjecture is true for a special class of triangulations which are based on subdivisions of certain 3-manifold cubulations. In this case we calculate the partition func…
The goal of spin foam models is to provide a viable path integral formulation of quantum gravity. Because of background independence, their underlying framework has certain novel features that are not shared by path integral formulations of familiar field theories in Minkowski space. As a simple viability test, these features were recently examined through the lens of loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Results of that analysis, reported in a brief communication [1], turned out to provide concrete arguments in support of the spin foam paradigm. We now present detailed proofs of those results. Since …
We provide a simple proof of the topological invariance of the Turaev-Viro model (corresponding to simplicial 3d pure Euclidean gravity with cosmological constant) by means of a novel diagrammatic formulation of the state sum models for quantum BF-theories. Moreover, we prove the invariance under more general conditions allowing the state sum to be defined on arbitrary cellular decompositions of the underlying manifold. Invariance is governed by a set of identities corresponding to local gluing and rearrangement of cells in the complex. Due to the fully algebraic nature of these identities our…
Progress in the new information-theoretic process physics is reported in which the link to the phenomenology of general relativity is made. In process physics the fundamental assumption is that reality is to be modelled as self-organising semantic (or internal or relational) information using a self-referentially limited neural network model. Previous progress in process physics included the demonstration that space and quantum physics are emergent and unified, with time a distinct non-geometric process, that quantum phenomena are caused by fractal topological defects embedded in and forming a…
We review the possibility that quantum fluctuations in the structure of space-time at the Planck scale might be subject to experimental probes. We study the effects of space-time foam in an approach inspired by string theory, in which solitonic D-brane excitations are taken into account when considering the ground state. We model the properties of this medium by analyzing the recoil of a D particle which is induced by the scattering of a closed-string state. We find that this recoil causes an energy-dependent perturbation of the background metric, which in turn induces an energy-dependent refr…
Unimodular gravity is based on a modification of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action that allows one to recover general relativity with a dynamical cosmological constant. It also has the interesting property of providing, as the momentum conjugate to the cosmological constant, an emergent clock variable. In this paper we investigate the cosmological reduction of unimodular gravity, and its quantization within the framework of flat homogeneous and isotropic loop quantum cosmology. It is shown that the unimodular clock can be used to construct the physical state space, and that the fundamental fea…
Perhaps standard effective field theory arguments are right, and vacuum fluctuations really do generate a huge cosmological constant. I show that if one does not assume homogeneity and an arrow of time at the Planck scale, a very large class of general relativistic initial data exhibit expansions, shears, and curvatures that are enormous at small scales, but quickly average to zero macroscopically. Subsequent evolution is more complex, but I argue that quantum fluctuations may preserve these properties. The resulting picture is a version of Wheeler's `spacetime foam,' in which the cosmological…
Quantum fluctuations can endow spacetime with a foamy structure. In this review article we discuss our various proposals to observationally constrain models of spacetime foam. One way is to examine if the light wave-front from a distant quasar or GRB can be noticeably distorted by spacetime-foam-induced phase incoherence. As the phase fluctuations are proportional to the distance to the source, but inversely proportional to the wavelength, ultra-high energy photons ($>1$ TeV) from distant sources are particularly useful. We elaborate on several proposals, including the possibility of detecting…
We analyze the big bounce transition of the quantum FRW model in the setting of the nonstandard loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Elementary observables are used to quantize compound observables. The spectrum of the energy density operator is bounded and continuous. The spectrum of the volume operator is bounded from below and discrete. It has equally distant levels defining a quantum of the volume. The discreteness may imply a foamy structure of spacetime at semiclassical level which may be detected in astro-cosmo observations. The nonstandard LQC method has a free parameter that should be fixed …
The quantization of the reduced phase-space of the Einstein-Hilbert action for gravity in $2+1D$ has been shown to bring about the emergence, at the quantum level, of a topological quantum field theory endowed with an $SU_q(2)$ quantum group symmetry structure. We hereby tackle the same problem, but start from the kinematical $SU(2)$ (quantum) Hilbert space of the theory of $2+1D$ gravity with non-zero cosmological constant in the Palatini formalism, and subsequently impose the constraints. We hence show the dynamical emergence of the $SU_q(2)$ quantum group at the quantum level within the spi…
We consider the cosmological symmetry reduction of the Plebanski action as a toy-model to explore, in this simple framework, some issues related to loop quantum gravity and spin-foam models. We make the classical analysis of the model and perform both path integral and canonical quantizations. As for the full theory, the reduced model admits two types of classical solutions: topological and gravitational ones. The quantization mixes these two solutions, which prevents the model to be equivalent to standard quantum cosmology. Furthermore, the topological solution dominates at the classical limi…
Two very different methods are used to estimate the magnitude of the effective cosmological constant / dark energy (for the present cosmic epoch). Their results agree with each other and are in agreement with observations. One method makes use of unimodular gravity and causal set theory, while the other one employs arguments involving spacetime foam and holography. I also motivate and discuss the possibility that quanta of (both) dark energy (and dark matter in the Modified Dark Matter model) are extended/non-local, obeying infinite statistics, also known as quantum Boltzmann statistics. Such …
We study in some detail the master equation, and its solution in a simplified case modelling flavour oscillations of a two-level system, stemming from the Liouville-string approach to quantum space time foam. In this framework we discuss the appearance of diffusion terms and decoherence due to the interaction of low-energy string matter with space-time defects, such as D-particles in the specific model of ``D-particle foam'', as well as dark energy contributions. We pay particular attention to contrasting the decoherent role of a cosmological constant in inducing exponential quantum damping in…
We explain how General Relativity with a cosmological constant arises as a broken symmetry phase of a BF theory. In particular we show how to treat de Sitter and anti-de Sitter cases simultaneously. This is then used to formulate a quantisation of General Relativity through a spin foam perturbation theory. We then briefly discuss how to calculate the effective action in this quantization procedure.
The Turaev-Viro state sum model provides a covariant spin foam quantization of three-dimensional Riemannian gravity with a positive cosmological constant Λ. We complete the program to canonically quantize the theory in the BF formulation using the formalism of Loop Quantum Gravity. In particular, we show first how quantum group structures arise from the requirement of the constraint algebra to be anomaly free. This allows us to generalize the construction of the physical scalar product, from the Λ = 0 case, in presence of a positive Λ. We prove the equivalence between the covariant and canonic…
With the motivation in mind to evaluate the contribution of the cosmological constant $Λ$ on the foam like patterns formation process in the distribution of galaxies, we investigate the Newtonian dynamics of a spherical void embedded in an uniform medium which undergoes a Hubble expansion. We use a covariant approach for deriving the evolution with time of the shell (S) acting as a boundaries condition for the inside and outside media. As a result, with the usual values for the cosmological parameters, S expands with a huge initial burst that freezes up to matching Hubble flow. With respect to…
An open issue in loop quantum gravity (LQG) is the introduction of a non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ$. In 3d, Chern-Simons theory provides some guiding lines: $Λ$ appears in the quantum deformation of the gauge group. The Turaev-Viro model, which is an example of spin foam model is also defined in terms of a quantum group. By extension, it is believed that in 4d, a quantum group structure could encode the presence of $Λ\neq0$. In this article, we introduce by hand the quantum group $\mathcal{U}_{q}(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ into the LQG framework, that is we deal with $\mathcal{U}_{q}(\mathfra…
