Modular robots can be tailored to achieve specific tasks and rearranged to achieve previously infeasible ones. The challenge is choosing an appropriate design from a large search space. In this work, we describe a framework that automatically synthesizes the design and controls for a serial chain modular manipulator given a task description. The task includes points to be reached in the 3D space, time constraints, a load to be sustained at the end-effector, and obstacles to be avoided in the environment. These specifications are encoded as a constrained optimization in the robot's kinematics and dynamics and, if a solution is found, the formulation returns the specific design and controls to perform the task. Finally, we demonstrate our approach on a complex specification in which the robot navigates a constrained environment while holding an object.
The paper focuses on the enhanced stiffness modeling of robotic manipulators by taking into account influence of the external force/torque acting upon the end point. It implements the virtual joint technique that describes the compliance of manipulator elements by a set of localized six-dimensional springs separated by rigid links and perfect joints. In contrast to the conventional formulation, which is valid for the unloaded mode and small displacements, the proposed approach implicitly assumes that the loading leads to the non-negligible changes of the manipulator posture and corresponding a…

This paper proposes a real-time model predictive control (MPC) scheme to execute multiple tasks using robots over a finite-time horizon. In industrial robotic applications, we must carefully consider multiple constraints for avoiding joint position, velocity, and torque limits. In addition, singularity-free and smooth motions require executing tasks continuously and safely. Instead of formulating nonlinear MPC problems, we devise linear MPC problems using kinematic and dynamic models linearized along nominal trajectories produced by hierarchical controllers. These linear MPC problems are solva…

This paper presents methods for finding optimal configurations and actuator forces/torques to maximise contact wrenches in a desired direction for Underwater Vehicles Manipulator Systems (UVMS). The wrench maximisation problem is formulated as a linear programming problem, and the optimal configuration is solved as a bi-level optimisation in the parameterised redundancy space. We additionally consider the cases of one or more manipulators with multiple contact forces, maximising wrench capability while tracking a trajectory, and generating large wrench impulses using dynamic motions. We look a…
Cartesian impedance control is a type of motion control strategy for robots that improves safety in partially unknown environments by achieving a compliant behavior of the robot with respect to its external forces. This compliant robot behavior has the added benefit of allowing physical human guidance of the robot. In this paper, we propose a C++ implementation of compliance control valid for any torque-commanded robotic manipulator. The proposed controller implements Cartesian impedance control to track a desired end-effector pose. Additionally, joint impedance is projected in the nullspace o…
In marine operations underwater manipulators play a primordial role. However, due to uncertainties in the dynamic model and disturbances caused by the environment, low-level control methods require great capabilities to adapt to change. Furthermore, under position and torque constraints the requirements for the control system are greatly increased. Reinforcement learning is a data driven control technique that can learn complex control policies without the need of a model. The learning capabilities of these type of agents allow for great adaptability to changes in the operative conditions. In …
A rigid-flexible manipulator may be assigned tasks in a moving environment where the winds or vibrations affect the position and/or orientation of surface of operation. Consequently, losses of the contact and perhaps degradation of the performance may occur as references are changed. When the environment is moving, knowledge of the angle α between the contact surface and the horizontal is required at every instant. In this paper, different profiles for the time varying angle α are proposed to investigate the effect of this change into the contact force and the joint torques of a rigi…
This paper presents a method for guiding a robot manipulator to capture and bring a tumbling satellite to a state of rest. The proposed approach includes developing a coordination control for the combined system of the space robot and the target satellite, where the satellite acts as the manipulator payload. This control ensures that the robot tracks the optimal path while regulating the attitude of the chase vehicle to a desired value. Two optimal trajectories are then designed for the pre- and post-capture phases. In the pre-capturing phase, the manipulator manoeuvres are optimized by minimi…
Collaborative robots should ideally use low torque actuators for passive safety reasons. However, some applications require these collaborative robots to reach deep into confined spaces while assisting a human operator in physically demanding tasks. In this paper, we consider the use of in-situ collaborative robots (ISCRs) that balance the conflicting demands of passive safety dictating low torque actuation and the need to reach into deep confined spaces. We consider the judicious use of bracing as a possible solution to these conflicting demands and present a modeling framework that takes int…

This paper presents, for the first time, a method for learning in-contact tasks from a teleoperated demonstration with a hydraulic manipulator. Due to the use of extremely powerful hydraulic manipulator, a force-reflected bilateral teleoperation is the most reasonable method of giving a human demonstration. An advanced subsystem-dynamic-based control design framework, virtual decomposition control (VDC), is used to design a stability-guaranteed controller for the teleoperation system, while taking into account the full nonlinear dynamics of the master and slave manipulators. The use of fragile…

The paper is devoted to the elastostatic calibration of industrial robots, which is used for precise machining of large-dimensional parts made of composite materials. In this technological process, the interaction between the robot and the workpiece causes essential elastic deflections of the manipulator components that should be compensated by the robot controller using relevant elastostatic model of this mechanism. To estimate parameters of this model, an advanced calibration technique is applied that is based on the non-linear experiment design theory, which is adopted for this particular a…
This paper addresses the problem of cooperative object transportation for multiple Underwater Vehicle Manipulator Systems (UVMSs) in a constrained workspace with static obstacles, where the coordination relies solely on implicit communication arising from the physical interaction of the robots with the commonly grasped object. We propose a novel distributed leader-follower architecture, where the leading UVMS, which has knowledge of the object's desired trajectory, tries to achieve the desired tracking behavior via an impedance control law, navigating in this way, the overall formation towards…

We consider the speed planning problem for a robotic manipulator. In particular, we present an algorithm for finding the time-optimal speed law along an assigned path that satisfies velocity and acceleration constraints and respects the maximum forces and torques allowed by the actuators. The addressed optimization problem is a finite dimensional reformulation of the continuous-time speed optimization problem, obtained by discretizing the speed profile with N points. The proposed algorithm has linear complexity with respect to N and to the number of degrees of freedom. Such complexity is the b…
A double pendulum subject to external torques is used as a model to study the stability of a planar manipulator with two links and two rotational driven joints. The hamiltonian equations of motion and the fixed points (stationary solutions) in phase space are determined. Under suitable conditions, the presence of constant torques does not change the number of fixed points, and preserves the topology of orbits in their linear neighborhoods; two equivalent invariant manifolds are observed, each corresponding to a saddle-center fixed point.
Manipulation of objects by exploiting their contact with the environment can enhance both the dexterity and payload capability of robotic manipulators. A common way to manipulate heavy objects beyond the payload capability of a robot is to use a sequence of pivoting motions, wherein, an object is moved while some contact points between the object and a support surface are kept fixed. The goal of this paper is to develop an algorithmic approach for automated plan generation for object manipulation with a sequence of pivoting motions. A plan for manipulating a heavy object consists of a sequence…
Detecting and localizing contacts is essential for robot manipulators to perform contact-rich tasks in unstructured environments. While robot skins can localize contacts on the surface of robot arms, these sensors are not yet robust or easily accessible. As such, prior works have explored using proprioceptive observations, such as joint velocities and torques, to perform contact localization. Many past approaches assume the robot is static during contact incident, a single contact is made at a time, or having access to accurate dynamics models and joint torque sensing. In this work, we relax t…

The paper deals with coupled systems including hand-operated balanced manipulators and lightweight robots. The aim of such a cooperation is to displace heavy payloads with less powerful robots. In other term, in the coupled system for handling of heavy payloads by a HOBM an operator is replaced by a LWR. The advantages of the coupled HOBM and LWR are disclosed and the optimal design of the cooperative workspace is discussed. Behavior of the coupled system in a static mode when the velocities the HOBM are limited does not present any special problems. In this mode, the inertial forces are signi…
This paper proposes control laws ensuring the stabilization of a time-varying desired joint trajectory, as well as joint limit avoidance, in the case of fully-actuated manipulators. The key idea is to perform a parametrization of the feasible joint space in terms of exogenous states. It follows that the control of these states allows for joint limit avoidance. One of the main outcomes of this paper is that position terms in control laws are replaced by parametrized terms, where joint limits must be avoided. Stability and convergence of time-varying reference trajectories obtained with the prop…

This paper addresses the problem of end-effector formation control for manipulators that are subjected to external disturbances: input disturbance torques and disturbance forces at each end-effector. The disturbances are assumed to be non-vanishing and are superposition of finite number of sinusoidal and step signals. The formation control objective is achieved by assigning virtual springs between end-effectors, by adding damping terms at joints, and by incorporating internal model-based dynamic compensators to counteract the effect of the disturbances; all of which presents a clear physical i…
Practical use of robotic manipulators made from soft materials requires generating and executing complex motions. We present the first approach for generating trajectories of a thermally-actuated soft robotic manipulator. Based on simplified approximations of the soft arm and its antagonistic shape-memory alloy actuator coils, we justify a dynamics model of a discretized rigid manipulator with joint torques proportional to wire temperature. Then, we propose a method to calibrate this model from experimental data and demonstrate that the simulation aligns well with a hardware test. Finally, we …

Recently, a time-varying quadratic programming (QP) framework that describes the tracking operations of redundant robot manipulators is introduced to handle the kinematic resolutions of many robot control tasks. Based on the generalization of such a time-varying QP framework, two schemes, i.e., the Repetitive Motion Scheme and the Hybrid Torque Scheme, are proposed. However, measurement noises are unavoidable when a redundant robot manipulator is executing a tracking task. To solve this problem, a novel integration-enhanced recurrent neural network (IE-RNN) is proposed in this paper. Associati…
