This article presents a new hand architecture with three under-actuated fingers. Each finger performs spatial movements to achieve more complex and varied grasping than the existing planar-movement fingers. The purpose of this hand is to grasp complex-shaped workpieces as they leave the machining centres. Among the taxonomy of grips, cylindrical and spherical grips are often used to grasp heavy objects. A combination of these two modes makes it possible to capture most of the workpieces machined with 5-axis machines. However, the change in grasping mode requires the fingers to reconfigure themselves to perform spatial movements. This solution requires the addition of two or three actuators to change the position of the fingers and requires sensors to recognize the shape of the workpiece and determine the type of grasp to be used. This article proposes to extend the notion of under-actuated fingers to spatial movements. After a presentation of the kinematics of the fingers, the problem of stability is discussed as well as the transmission of forces in this mechanism. The complete approach for calculating the stability conditions is presented from the study of Jacobian force transmission matrices. CAD representations of the hand and its behavior in spherical and cylindrical grips are presented.

This technical report presents an introduction to different aspects of multi-fingered robot grasping. After having introduced relevant mathematical background for modeling, form and force closure are discussed. Next, we present an overview of various grasp planning algorithms with the objective of illustrating different approaches to solve this problem. Finally, we discuss grasp performance benchmarking.
High resolution tactile sensors are often bulky and have shape profiles that make them awkward for use in manipulation. This becomes important when using such sensors as fingertips for dexterous multi-fingered hands, where boxy or planar fingertips limit the available set of smooth manipulation strategies. High resolution optical based sensors such as GelSight have until now been constrained to relatively flat geometries due to constraints on illumination geometry. Here, we show how to construct a rounded fingertip that utilizes a form of light piping for directional illumination. Our sensors c…
This letter proposes a novel single-fingered reconfigurable robotic gripper for grasping objects in narrow working spaces. The finger of the developed gripper realizes two configurations, namely, the insertion and grasping modes, using only a single motor. In the insertion mode, the finger assumes a thin shape such that it can insert its tip into a narrow space. The grasping mode of the finger is activated through a folding mechanism. Mode switching can be achieved in two ways: switching the mode actively by a motor, or combining passive rotation of the fingertip through contact with the suppo…

This paper proposes a novel pneumatic soft robotic hand that incorporates a mechanism that can switch the airflow path using a single airflow control. The developed hand can control the finger motion and operate the surface friction variable mechanism. In the friction variable mechanism, a lubricant is injected onto the high-friction finger surface to reduce surface friction. To inject the lubrication using a positive-pressure airflow, the Venturi effect is applied. The design and evaluation of the airflow-path switching and friction variable mechanisms are described. Moreover, the entire desi…
Compared to traditional rigid robotics, soft robotics has attracted increasing attention due to its advantages as compliance, safety, and low cost. As an essential part of soft robotics, the soft robotic gripper also shows its superior while grasping the objects with irregular shapes. Recent research has been conducted to improve its grasping performance by adjusting the variable effective length (VEL). However, the VEL achieved by multi-chamber design or tunable stiffness shape memory material requires complex pneumatic circuit design or a time-consuming phase-changing process. This work prop…
We present an attention based visual analysis framework to compute grasp-relevant information in order to guide grasp planning using a multi-fingered robotic hand. Our approach uses a computational visual attention model to locate regions of interest in a scene, and uses a deep convolutional neural network to detect grasp type and point for a sub-region of the object presented in a region of interest. We demonstrate the proposed framework in object grasping tasks, in which the information generated from the proposed framework is used as prior information to guide the grasp planning. Results sh…

Sensing contacts throughout the fingers is an essential capability for a robot to perform manipulation tasks in cluttered environments. However, existing tactile sensors either only have a flat sensing surface or a compliant tip with a limited sensing area. In this paper, we propose a novel optical tactile sensor, the GelTip, that is shaped as a finger and can sense contacts on any location of its surface. The sensor captures high-resolution and color-invariant tactile images that can be exploited to extract detailed information about the end-effector's interactions against manipulated objects…

Designing robotic hands for specific tasks could help in the creation of optimized end-effectors for grasping and manipulation. However the systematic design of robotic hands for a simultaneous task of all fingertips presents many challenges. In this work the algorithms and implementation of an overall synthesis process is presented, which could be a first step towards a complete design tool for robotic end-effectors. Type synthesis for a given task and number of fingers, solvability and dimensional synthesis for arbitrary topologies are developed and implemented. The resulting solver is a pow…
Soft robotic hands and grippers are increasingly attracting attention as a robotic end-effector. Compared with rigid counterparts, they are safer for human-robot and environment-robot interactions, easier to control, lower cost and weight, and more compliant. Current soft robotic hands have mostly focused on the soft fingers and bending actuators. However, the palm is also essential part for grasping. In this work, we propose a novel design of soft humanoid hand with pneumatic soft fingers and soft palm. The hand is inexpensive to fabricate. The configuration of the soft palm is based on modul…
Wearable robotics bring the opportunity to augment human capability and performance, be it through prosthetics, exoskeletons, or supernumerary robotic limbs. The latter concept allows enhancing human performance and assisting them in daily tasks. An important research question is, however, whether the use of such devices can lead to their eventual cognitive embodiment, allowing the user to adapt to them and use them seamlessly as any other limb of their own. This paper describes the creation of a platform to investigate this. Our supernumerary robotic 3rd thumb was created to augment piano pla…

We propose a novel tri-fingered soft robotic gripper with decoupled stiffness and shape control capability for performing adaptive grasping with minimum system complexity. The proposed soft fingers adaptively conform to object shapes facilitating the handling of objects of different types, shapes, and sizes. Each soft gripper finger has an inextensible articulable backbone and is actuated by pneumatic muscles. We derive a kinematic model of the gripper and use an empirical approach to map input pressures to stiffness and bending deformation of fingers. We use these mappings to achieve decouple…

The soft robot hand is composed of a new kind of multi-freedom soft finger and soft palm, which realizes the characteristic grasping function of forehand and backhand. Combined with the fine fluid control system, the soft hand can realize flexible grasping under high pressure, so as to realize flexible grasping operation for different types of target objects in the underwater environment. The soft robot hand was controlled based on wa…

We present a force feedback controller for a dexterous robotic hand equipped with force sensors on its fingertips. Our controller uses the conditional postural synergies framework to generate the grasp postures, i.e. the finger configuration of the robot, at each time step based on forces measured on the robot's fingertips. Using this framework we are able to control the hand during different grasp types using only one variable, the grasp size, which we define as the distance between the tip of the thumb and the index finger. Instead of controlling the finger limbs independently, our controlle…

In this paper, a novel tactile sensing mechanism for soft robotic fingers is proposed. Inspired by the proprioception mechanism found in mammals, the proposed approach infers tactile information from a strain sensor attached on the finger's tendon. We perform experiments to test the tactile sensing capabilities of the proposed structures, and our results indicate this method is capable of palpating texture and stiffness in both abduction and flexion contact. Under systematic cross validation, the proposed system achieved 100% and 99.7% accuracy in texture and stiffness discrimination respectiv…

To achieve human-like dexterity for anthropomorphic robotic hands, it is essential to understand the biomechanics and control strategies of the human hand, in order to reduce the number of actuators being used without loosing hand flexibility. To this end, in this article, we propose a new interpretation about the working mechanism of the metacarpal (MCP) joint's extension and the underlying control strategies of the human hand, based on which we further propose a highly flexible finger design to achieve independent movements of interphalangeal (IP) joints and MCP joint. Besides, we consider t…

The device has been designed to apply only normal forces to the finger phalanges during flexion/extension of the fingers, while providing automatic adaptability for different finger sizes. Thus, the easiness of the attachment to the user's fingers and better comfort have been ensured. The analyses of the device kinematic pose, statics, and stability of grasp have been performed. These analyses have been used to optimize th…

Attempts to achieve robotic Within-Hand-Manipulation (WIHM) generally utilize either high-DOF robotic hands with elaborate sensing apparatus or multi-arm robotic systems. In prior work we presented a simple robot hand with variable friction robot fingers, which allow a low-complexity approach to within-hand object translation and rotation, though this manipulation was limited to planar actions. In this work we extend the capabilities of this system to 3D manipulation with a novel region-based WIHM planning algorithm and utilizing extrinsic contacts. The ability to modulate finger friction enha…

To adapt to constantly changing environments and be safe for human interaction, robots should have compliant and soft characteristics as well as the ability to sense the world around them. Even so, the incorporation of tactile sensing into a soft compliant robot, like the Fin Ray finger, is difficult due to its deformable structure. Not only does the frame need to be modified to allow room for a vision sensor, which enables intricate tactile sensing, the robot must also retain its original mechanically compliant properties. However, adding high-resolution tactile sensors to soft fingers is dif…

The number of sequential tasks a single gripper can perform is significantly limited by its design. In many cases, changing the gripper fingers is required to successfully conduct multiple consecutive tasks. For this reason, several robotic tool change systems have been introduced that allow an automatic changing of the entire end-effector. However, many situations require only the modification or the change of the fingertip, making the exchange of the entire gripper uneconomic. In this paper, we introduce a paradigm for automatic task-specific fingertip production. The setup used in the propo…
Grasp planning for multi-fingered hands is computationally expensive due to the joint-contact coupling, surface nonlinearities and high dimensionality, thus is generally not affordable for real-time implementations. Traditional planning methods by optimization, sampling or learning work well in planning for parallel grippers but remain challenging for multi-fingered hands. This paper proposes a strategy called finger splitting, to plan precision grasps for multi-fingered hands starting from optimal parallel grasps. The finger splitting is optimized by a dual-stage iterative optimization includ…
Multi-fingered robotic grasping is an undeniable stepping stone to universal picking and dexterous manipulation. Yet, multi-fingered grippers remain challenging to control because of their rich nonsmooth contact dynamics or because of sensor noise. In this work, we aim to plan hand configurations by performing Bayesian posterior inference through the full stochastic forward simulation of the robot in its environment, hence robustly accounting for many of the uncertainties in the system. While previous methods either relied on simplified surrogates of the likelihood function or attempted to lea…

Synergy supplies a practical approach for expressing various postures of a multi-fingered hand. However, a conventional synergy defined for reproducing grasping postures cannot perform general-purpose tasks expected for a multi-fingered hand. Locking the position of particular fingers is essential for a multi-fingered hand to manipulate an object. When using conventional synergy based control to manipulate an object, which requires locking some fingers, the coordination of joints is heavily restricted, decreasing the dexterity of the hand. We propose a functionally divided manipulation synergy…
