We investigate the efficiency of two very different spoken term detection approaches for transcription when the available data is insufficient to train a robust ASR system. This work is grounded in very low-resource language documentation scenario where only few minutes of recording have been transcribed for a given language so far.Experiments on two oral languages show that a pretrained universal phone recognizer, fine-tuned with only a few minutes of target language speech, can be used for spoken term detection with a better overall performance than a dynamic time warping approach. In addition, we show that representing phoneme recognition ambiguity in a graph structure can further boost the recall while maintaining high precision in the low resource spoken term detection task.

The increasing demand for learning English as a second language has led to a growing interest in methods for automatically assessing spoken language proficiency. Most approaches use hand-crafted features, but their efficacy relies on their particular underlying assumptions and they risk discarding potentially salient information about proficiency. Other approaches rely on transcriptions produced by ASR systems which may not provide a faithful rendition of a learner's utterance in specific scenarios (e.g., non-native children's spontaneous speech). Furthermore, transcriptions do not yield any i…

Spoken dialog systems are slowly becoming and integral part of the human experience due to their various advantages over textual interfaces. Spoken language understanding (SLU) systems are fundamental building blocks of spoken dialog systems. But creating SLU systems for low resourced languages is still a challenge. In a large number of low resourced language, we don't have access to enough data to build automatic speech recognition (ASR) technologies, which are fundamental to any SLU system. Also, ASR based SLU systems do not generalize to unwritten languages. In this paper, we present a seri…
Spoken language understanding (SLU) treats automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language understanding (NLU) as a unified task and usually suffers from data scarcity. We exploit an ASR and NLU joint training method based on meta auxiliary learning to improve the performance of low-resource SLU task by only taking advantage of abundant manual transcriptions of speech data. One obvious advantage of such method is that it provides a flexible framework to implement a low-resource SLU training task without requiring access to any further semantic annotations. In particular, a NLU model is…
Spoken language understanding (SLU) systems extract both text transcripts and semantics associated with intents and slots from input speech utterances. SLU systems usually consist of (1) an automatic speech recognition (ASR) module, (2) an interface module that exposes relevant outputs from ASR, and (3) a natural language understanding (NLU) module. Interfaces in SLU systems carry information on text transcriptions or richer information like neural embeddings from ASR to NLU. In this paper, we study how interfaces affect joint-training for spoken language understanding. Most notably, we obtain…

We present the IMS-Speech, a web based tool for German and English speech transcription aiming to facilitate research in various disciplines which require accesses to lexical information in spoken language materials. This tool is based on modern open source software stack, advanced speech recognition methods and public data resources and is freely available for academic researchers. The utilized models are built to be generic in order to provide transcriptions of competitive accuracy on a diverse set of tasks and conditions.
End-to-end acoustic-to-word speech recognition models have recently gained popularity because they are easy to train, scale well to large amounts of training data, and do not require a lexicon. In addition, word models may also be easier to integrate with downstream tasks such as spoken language understanding, because inference (search) is much simplified compared to phoneme, character or any other sort of sub-word units. In this paper, we describe methods to construct contextual acoustic word embeddings directly from a supervised sequence-to-sequence acoustic-to-word speech recognition model …

Recent studies find existing self-supervised speech encoders contain primarily acoustic rather than semantic information. As a result, pipelined supervised automatic speech recognition (ASR) to large language model (LLM) systems achieve state-of-the-art results on semantic spoken language tasks by utilizing rich semantic representations from the LLM. These systems come at the cost of labeled audio transcriptions, which is expensive and time-consuming to obtain. We propose a task-agnostic unsupervised way of incorporating semantic information from LLMs into self-supervised speech encoders witho…
Spoken question answering (SQA) is a challenging task that requires the machine to fully understand the complex spoken documents. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) plays a significant role in the development of QA systems. However, the recent work shows that ASR systems generate highly noisy transcripts, which critically limit the capability of machine comprehension on the SQA task. To address the issue, we present a novel distillation framework. Specifically, we devise a training strategy to perform knowledge distillation (KD) from spoken documents and written counterparts. Our work makes a …
Decoding speaker's intent is a crucial part of spoken language understanding (SLU). The presence of noise or errors in the text transcriptions, in real life scenarios make the task more challenging. In this paper, we address the spoken language intent detection under noisy conditions imposed by automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. We propose to employ confusion2vec word feature representation to compensate for the errors made by ASR and to increase the robustness of the SLU system. The confusion2vec, motivated from human speech production and perception, models acoustic relationships be…
Spoken conversational question answering (SCQA) requires machines to model complex dialogue flow given the speech utterances and text corpora. Different from traditional text question answering (QA) tasks, SCQA involves audio signal processing, passage comprehension, and contextual understanding. However, ASR systems introduce unexpected noisy signals to the transcriptions, which result in performance degradation on SCQA. To overcome the problem, we propose CADNet, a novel contextualized attention-based distillation approach, which applies both cross-attention and self-attention to obtain ASR-…
State-of-the-art English automatic speech recognition systems typically use phonetic rather than graphemic lexicons. Graphemic systems are known to perform less well for English as the mapping from the written form to the spoken form is complicated. However, in recent years the representational power of deep-learning based acoustic models has improved, raising interest in graphemic acoustic models for English, due to the simplicity of generating the lexicon. In this paper, phonetic and graphemic models are compared for an English Multi-Genre Broadcast transcription task. A range of acoustic mo…
Spoken language understanding (SLU) topic has seen a lot of progress these last three years, with the emergence of end-to-end neural approaches. Spoken language understanding refers to natural language processing tasks related to semantic extraction from speech signal, like named entity recognition from speech or slot filling task in a context of human-machine dialogue. Classically, SLU tasks were processed through a cascade approach that consists in applying, firstly, an automatic speech recognition process, followed by a natural language processing module applied to the automatic transcripti…
The present study tackles the problem of automatically discovering spoken keywords from untranscribed audio archives without requiring word-by-word speech transcription by automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology. The problem is of practical significance in many applications of speech analytics, including those concerning low-resource languages, and large amount of multilingual and multi-genre data. We propose a two-stage approach, which comprises unsupervised acoustic modeling and decoding, followed by pattern mining in acoustic unit sequences. The whole process starts by deriving and mo…
In spite of the recent success of Dialogue Act (DA) classification, the majority of prior works focus on text-based classification with oracle transcriptions, i.e. human transcriptions, instead of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)'s transcriptions. In spoken dialog systems, however, the agent would only have access to noisy ASR transcriptions, which may further suffer performance degradation due to domain shift. In this paper, we explore the effectiveness of using both acoustic and textual signals, either oracle or ASR transcriptions, and investigate speaker domain adaptation for DA classific…
End-to-end (E2E) spoken language understanding (SLU) systems predict utterance semantics directly from speech using a single model. Previous work in this area has focused on targeted tasks in fixed domains, where the output semantic structure is assumed a priori and the input speech is of limited complexity. In this work we present our approach to developing an E2E model for generalized SLU in commercial voice assistants (VAs). We propose a fully differentiable, transformer-based, hierarchical system that can be pretrained at both the ASR and NLU levels. This is then fine-tuned on both transcr…

Alzheimer's Disease is the most common form of dementia. Automatic detection from speech could help to identify symptoms at early stages, so that preventive actions can be carried out. This research is a contribution to the ADReSSo Challenge, we analyze the usage of a SotA ASR system to transcribe participant's spoken descriptions from a picture. We analyse the loss of performance regarding the use of human transcriptions (measured using transcriptions from the 2020 ADReSS Challenge). Furthermore, we study the influence of a language model -- which tends to correct non-standard sequences of wo…
The Berber, or Amazigh language family is a low-resource North African vernacular language spoken by the indigenous Berber ethnic group. It has its own unique alphabet called Tifinagh used across Berber communities in Morocco, Algeria, and others. The Afroasiatic language Berber is spoken by 14 million people, yet lacks adequate representation in education, research, web applications etc. For instance, there is no option of translation to or from Amazigh / Berber on Google Translate, which hosts over 100 languages today. Consequently, we do not find specialized educational apps, L2 (2nd langua…

Visually-grounded models of spoken language understanding extract semantic information directly from speech, without relying on transcriptions. This is useful for low-resource languages, where transcriptions can be expensive or impossible to obtain. Recent work showed that these models can be improved if transcriptions are available at training time. However, it is not clear how an end-to-end approach compares to a traditional pipeline-based approach when one has access to transcriptions. Comparing different strategies, we find that the pipeline approach works better when enough text is availa…
Spoken Language can be used to provide insights into organisational processes, unfortunately transcription and coding stages are very time consuming and expensive. The concept of partial transcription and coding is proposed in which spoken language is indexed prior to any subsequent processing. The functional linguistic theory of texture is used to describe the effects of partial transcription on observational records. The standard used to encode transcript context and metadata is called CHAT, but a previous XML schema developed to implement it contains design assumptions that make it difficul…

For many low-resource languages, spoken language resources are more likely to be annotated with translations than with transcriptions. Translated speech data is potentially valuable for documenting endangered languages or for training speech translation systems. A first step towards making use of such data would be to automatically align spoken words with their translations. We present a model that combines Dyer et al.'s reparameterization of IBM Model 2 (fast-align) and k-means clustering using Dynamic Time Warping as a distance metric. The two components are trained jointly using expectation…

We introduce the largest transcribed Arabic speech corpus, QASR, collected from the broadcast domain. This multi-dialect speech dataset contains 2,000 hours of speech sampled at 16kHz crawled from Aljazeera news channel. The dataset is released with lightly supervised transcriptions, aligned with the audio segments. Unlike previous datasets, QASR contains linguistically motivated segmentation, punctuation, speaker information among others. QASR is suitable for training and evaluating speech recognition systems, acoustics- and/or linguistics- based Arabic dialect identification, punctuation res…

In this work, we propose an effective approach for training unique embedding representations by combining three simultaneous modalities: image and spoken and textual narratives. The proposed methodology departs from a baseline system that spawns a embedding space trained with only spoken narratives and image cues. Our experiments on the EPIC-Kitchen and Places Audio Caption datasets show that introducing the human-generated textual transcriptions of the spoken narratives helps to the training procedure yielding to get better embedding representations. The triad speech, image and words allows f…
Masked language models have revolutionized natural language processing systems in the past few years. A recently introduced generalization of masked language models called warped language models are trained to be more robust to the types of errors that appear in automatic or manual transcriptions of spoken language by exposing the language model to the same types of errors during training. In this work we propose a novel approach that takes advantage of the robustness of warped language models to transcription noise for correcting transcriptions of spoken language. We show that our proposed ap…

Spiking neural networks (SNN) are a promising research avenue for building accurate and efficient automatic speech recognition systems. Recent advances in audio-to-spike encoding and training algorithms enable SNN to be applied in practical tasks. Biologically-inspired SNN communicates using sparse asynchronous events. Therefore, spike-timing is critical to SNN performance. In this aspect, most works focus on training synaptic weights and few have considered delays in event transmission, namely axonal delay. In this work, we consider a learnable axonal delay capped at a maximum value, which ca…

We propose a novel transcription workflow which combines spoken term detection and human-in-the-loop, together with a pilot experiment. This work is grounded in an almost zero-resource scenario where only a few terms have so far been identified, involving two endangered languages. We show that in the early stages of transcription, when the available data is insufficient to train a robust ASR system, it is possible to take advantage of the transcription of a small number of isolated words in order to bootstrap the transcription of a speech collection.
Intent Recognition and Slot Identification are crucial components in spoken language understanding (SLU) systems. In this paper, we present a novel approach towards both these tasks in the context of low resourced and unwritten languages. We present an acoustic based SLU system that converts speech to its phonetic transcription using a universal phone recognition system. We build a word-free natural language understanding module that does intent recognition and slot identification from these phonetic transcription. Our proposed SLU system performs competitively for resource rich scenarios and …
This paper presents a new semantic frame parsing model, based on Berkeley FrameNet, adapted to process spoken documents in order to perform information extraction from broadcast contents. Building upon previous work that had shown the effectiveness of adversarial learning for domain generalization in the context of semantic parsing of encyclopedic written documents, we propose to extend this approach to elocutionary style generalization. The underlying question throughout this study is whether adversarial learning can be used to combine data from different sources and train models on a higher …

This paper describes technology developed to automatically grade Italian students (ages 9-16) on their English and German spoken language proficiency. The students' spoken answers are first transcribed by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system and then scored using a feedforward neural network (NN) that processes features extracted from the automatic transcriptions. In-domain acoustic models, employing deep neural networks (DNNs), are derived by adapting the parameters of an original out of domain DNN.
While recent retrieval techniques do not limit the number of index terms, out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words are crucial in speech recognition. Aiming at retrieving information with spoken queries, we fill the gap between speech recognition and text retrieval in terms of the vocabulary size. Given a spoken query, we generate a transcription and detect OOV words through speech recognition. We then correspond detected OOV words to terms indexed in a target collection to complete the transcription, and search the collection for documents relevant to the completed transcription. We show the effectivene…

Voice Assistants such as Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant typically use a two-stage Spoken Language Understanding pipeline; first, an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) component to process customer speech and generate text transcriptions, followed by a Natural Language Understanding (NLU) component to map transcriptions to an actionable hypothesis. An end-to-end (E2E) system that goes directly from speech to a hypothesis is a more attractive option. These systems were shown to be smaller, faster, and better optimized. However, they require massive amounts of end-to-end training data and in a…
