A hybrid setup consisting of a superconductivity-proximitized quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator and a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator is proposed for chiral injection of electrons into the Majorana bound state (MBS). An unexplored region of the phase space involving the exchange field induced boost of the helical edge state is then proposed for the detection of the MBS. 2-D transport simulations of our proposed setup is compared with the corresponding setup in the absence of the QAH region, when moderate disorder and a small but finite bulk out-of-plane magnetic field and a Rashba field are included. The remarkable contrast between the two results demonstrates the possibility for an unprecedented immunity from disorder-induced masking of the MBS detection in our proposed setup.
We describe designs for the realization of topological Majorana qubits in terms of proximitized topological insulator nanoribbons pierced by a uniform axial magnetic field. This platform holds promise for particularly robust Majorana bound states, with easily manipulable inter-state couplings. We propose proof-of-principle experiments for initializing, manipulating, and reading out Majorana box qubits defined in floating devices dominated by charging effects. We argue that the platform offers design advantages which make it particularly suitable for extension to qubit network structures realiz…
We demonstrate that zero-energy Majorana bound state, in the ferromagnetic insulator (FI)-superconductor (SC) junction formed on the edge of two-dimensional topological insulator, exhibits three types of spin-triplet pairing correlations and its spin polarization direction is position independent in ferromagnetic insulator. When an electron is injected with a spin (anti-)parallel to this direction, equal-spin Andreev reflection exhibits the widest (narrowest) resonance peak. Similar behaviour is found when the coupling between two Majorana bound states in a FI-SC-FI junction is invoked, though…
Higher-order topological superconductors and superfluids host lower-dimensional Majorana corner and hinge states since novel topology exhibitions on boundaries. While such topological nontrivial phases have been explored extensively, more possible schemes are necessary for engineering Majorana states. In this paper we propose Majorana corner states could be realized in a two-dimensional attractive quantum spin-Hall insulator with opposite in-plane Zeeman energy at two sublattice sites. The appropriate Zeeman field leads to the opposite Dirac mass for adjacent edges of a square sample, and natu…
We propose a tune-free scheme to realize Kramers pairs of Majorana bound states in recently discovered higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs). We show that, by bringing two hinges of a HOTI into the proximity of an $s$-wave superconductor, the competition between local and crossed-Andreev pairing leads to the formation of Majorana Kramers pairs, when the latter pairing dominates over the former. We demonstrate that such a topological superconductivity is stabilized by moderate electron-electron interactions. The proposed setup avoids the application of a magnetic field or local voltage ga…
Signatures of Majorana fermion bound states in one-dimensional topological insulator (TI) nanowires with proximity effect induced superconductivity are studied. The phase diagram and energy spectra are calculated for single TI nanowires and it is shown that the nanowires can be in the topological invariant phases of winding numbers $W=0, \pm 1$, and $\pm 2$ corresponding to the cases with zero, one and two pairs of Majorana fermions in the single TI nanowires. It is also shown that the topological winding numbers, i.e., the numbers of pairs of Majorana fermions in the TI nanowires can be extra…
Chiral Majorana edge modes are theoretically proposed to perform braiding operations for the potential quantum computation. Here, we suggest a scheme to regulate trajectories of the chiral Majorana fermion based on a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI)-topological superconductor heterostructure. An applied external gate voltage to the QAHI region introduces a dynamical phase so that the outgoing Majorana fermions can be prominently tuned to different leads. The trajectory is mechanically analyzed and the electrical manipulation is represented by the oscillating transmission coefficients ve…
We show that quasi-one-dimensional (1D) quantum wires can be written onto the surface of magnetic topological insulator (MTI) thin films by gate arrays. When the MTI is in a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, MTI$/$superconductor quantum wires have especially broad stability regions for both topological and non-topological states, facilitating creation and manipulation of Majorana particles on the MTI surface.

We consider a system consisting of two tunnel-coupled two-dimensional topological insulators proximitized by a top and bottom superconductor with a phase difference of $π$ between them. We show that this system exhibits a time-reversal invariant second-order topological superconducting phase characterized by the presence of a Kramers pair of Majorana corner states at all four corners of a rectangular sample. We furthermore investigate the effect of a weak time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbation and show that an in-plane Zeeman field leads to an even richer phase diagram exhibiting two non…

We calculate density and current spatial distributions of a 2D model junction between a normal QAH contact and a superconducting QAH region hosting propagating (chiral) Majorana modes. We use a simplified Hamiltonian describing the spatial coupling of the modes on each side of the junction, as well as the related junction conductance. We study how this coupling is affected by orbital effects caused by an external magnetic field.
We predict conductance oscillations in a quantum-anomalous Hall 2d strip having a superconducting region of length $L_x$ with a chiral Majorana mode. These oscillations require a finite transverse extension of the strip $L_y$ of a few microns or less. Measuring the conductance periodicity with $L_x$ and a fixed bias, or with bias and a fixed $L_x$, yields the speed of the chiral Majorana mode. The physical mechanism behind the oscillations is the interference between backscattered chiral modes from second to first interface of the NSN double junction. The interferometer effect is enhanced by t…
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…
Among the potential applications of topological insulators, we investigate theoretically the effect of coexistence of proximity-induced ferromagnetism and superconductivity on the surface states of 3-dimensional topological insulator, where the superconducting electron-hole excitations can be significantly affected by the magnetization of ferromagnetic order. We find that, Majorana mode energy, as a verified feature of TI F/S structure, along the interface sensitively depends on the magnitude of magnetization $m_{zfs}$ in FS region, while its slope in perpendicular incidence presents steep and…

We propose to realize a one-dimensional chiral topological superconducting state at the magnetic domain walls stripe of a magnetic topological insulator coupled with a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. The localized Majorana zero modes can be constructed in a reconfigurable manner through magnetic domain writing by magnetic force microscopy. This proposal could be further extended to the Majorana zero modes at domain walls on superconducting spin-helical Dirac surface states, and may be applicable to the two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductor on FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_…
Topological insulator (TI) nanoribbons with proximity-induced superconductivity are a promising platform for Majorana bound states (MBSs). In this work, we consider a detailed modeling approach for a TI nanoribbon in contact with a superconductor via its top surface, which induces a superconducting gap in its surface-state spectrum. The system displays a rich phase diagram with different numbers of end-localized MBSs as a function of chemical potential and magnetic flux piercing the cross section of the ribbon. These MBSs can be robust or fragile upon consideration of electrostatic disorder. W…
Among the potential applications of topological insulators, we theoretically study the coexistence of proximity-induced ferromagnetic and superconducting orders in the surface states of a 3-dimensional topological insulator. The superconducting electron-hole excitations can be significantly affected by the magnetic order induced by a ferromagnet. In one hand, the surface state of the topological insulator, protected by the time-reversal symmetry, creates a spin-triplet and, on the other hand, magnetic order causes to renormalize the effective superconducting gap. We find Majorana mode energy a…
We study a vortex chain in a thin film of a topological insulator with proximity-induced superconductivity---a promising platform to realize Majorana zero modes (MZMs)---by modeling it as a two-leg Majorana ladder. While each pair of MZMs hybridizes through vortex tunneling, we hereby show that MZMs can be stabilized on the ends of the ladder with the presence of tilted external magnetic field and four-Majorana interaction. Furthermore, a fruitful phase diagram is obtained by controlling the direction of magnetic field and the thickness of the sample. We reveal many-body Majorana states and in…
Superconductivity and the quantum Hall effect are considered to be two cornerstones of condensed matter physics. The realization of hybrid structures where these two effects coexist has recently become an active field of research. In this work, we study a Josephson junction where a central region in the quantum Hall regime is proximitized with superconductors that can be driven to a topological phase with an external Zeeman field. In this regime, the Majorana modes that emerge at the ends of each superconducting lead couple to the chiral quantum Hall edge states. This produces distinguishable …
The surface of superconducting topological insulators (STIs) has been recognized as an effective $p\pm ip$ superconductivity platform for realizing elusive Majorana fermions. Chiral Majorana modes (CMMs), which are different from Majorana bound states localized at points, can be achieved readily in experiments by depositing a ferromagnetic overlayer on top of the STI surface. Here we simulate this heterostructure by employing a realistic tight-binding model and show that the CMM appears on the edge of the ferromagnetic islands only after the superconducting gap is inverted by the exchange coup…
We theoretically study bilayer superconducting topological insulator film, in which superconductivity exists for both top and bottom surface states. We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive the system into Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase, where electrons are paired with finite momenta. The LO phase is topologically non-trivial and characterized by a Z 2 topological invariant, leading to a Majorana zero mode chain along the edge perpendicular to in-plane magnetic fields.
We present a new platform for creating Majorana bound states from 2D gapless superconducting state in spin-helical systems under the in-plane Zeeman field. Topological 1D channels are formed by quantum confinement of quasiparticles via Andreev reflection from the surrounding fully gapped superconducting region. Our proposal can be realized using narrow strips of magnetic insulators on top of proximitized 3D topological insulators. This setup has key advantages that include: small Zeeman fields, no required fine-tuning of chemical potential, removal of the low-energy detrimental states, and lar…
We consider the surface states of a spherical topological insulator piecewise-terminated by superconductivity or ferromagnetism over various regions of the spherical surface. Such terminations gap the surface states by breaking U(1) particle-number symmetry or time-reversal symmetry, respectively. Interfaces and trijunctions between differently terminated surface regions can host propagating and bound Majorana modes, and the finite size of the spherical system makes it easily amenable to numerical analysis via exact diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian within a truncated Hil…
Using Ginzburg-Landau approach we show that the strain of the nematic superconductor can generate a specific (nematic) vorticity. In the case of doped topological insulators that vorticity forms a spin vortex. We find two types of topologically different spin vortices that either enhance (type I) or suppress (type II) superconductivity far from the vortex core. We apply Bogoliubov-de Geunnes equations to study electronic states in the nematic superconductor with spin vortices. We find that in the case of the vortex of type I, zero-energy states are localized near the vortex core. These states …
Developing a gate-tunable, scalable, and topologically-protectable supercurrent qubit and integrating it into a quantum circuit are crucial for applications in the fields of quantum information technology and topological phenomena. Here we propose that the nano-hybrid supercurrent transistors, a superconducting quantum analogue of a transistor, made of topological insulator nanowire would be a promising platform for unprecedented control of both the supercurrent magnitude and the current-phase relation by applying a voltage on a gate electrode. We believe that our experimental design will help…
Conventional $n$-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs) have protected gapless $(n - 1)$-dimensional boundary states. In contrast to this, second-order TSCs are characterized by topologically protected gapless $(n - 2)$-dimensional states with usual gapped $(n - 1)$-boundaries. Here, we study a second-order TSC with a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic topological insulator (TI) proximity-coupled to a high-temperature superconductor, where Majorana bound states (MBSs) are localized at the corners of a square sample with gapped edge modes. Due to the mirror symmetry of the hybrid system cons…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…
We study responses to metric perturbation in topological insulator models. In this paper we introduce a novel quantity, Hall viscosity to particle density ratio, which is analogous to the viscosity to entropy ratio suggested by AdS/CFT correspondence. This quantity corresponds to the filling fraction which characterizes the quantum Hall states, and hence it could be discussed in Haldane's zero-field quantum Hall system. We also consider dissipationless viscosity in the time reversal invariant quantum spin Hall system, which is related to a spin current.
We investigate a topological insulator -- superconductor heterostructure with an Abrikosov vortex in a magnetic field. Large Zeeman field causes a topological phase transition in the system. We found that a Majorana fermion exists at the vortex core in the phase with zero first Chern number and does not exist at the phase with non-trivial first Chern number. This result is supported by the index theorem. This system provides an example in which a Majorana fermion emerges in a system with zero first Chern number.
