The observation of the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM)-type two-photon interference (TPI) has played an important role in the development of photonic quantum technologies. The time-resolved coincidence-detection technique has been effectively used to identify and characterize the TPI phenomena of long-coherence optical fields. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of the TPI of two phase-randomized weak coherent pulses with time-resolved coincidence detection. The mutual coherence time between the two weak coherent lights is determined by applying a frequency noise to one of the two interfering lights. We analyze the HOM-type TPI-fringe visibility according to the ratio of the coherence time to the pulse duration.
We study the conditions for two-photon classical interference with coherent pulses. We find that the temporal overlap between optical pulses is not required for interference However, coherence within the same inputs is found to be essential for the interference.
We present theoretical and experimental results on the generation and detection of pulsed, relative-intensity squeezed light in a hot Rb87 vapor. The intensity noise correlations between a pulsed probe beam and its conjugate, generated through nearly-degenerate four-wave mixing in a double-lambda system, are studied numerically and measured experimentally via time-resolved balanced detection. We predict and observe about -1 dB of time-resolved relative intensity squeezing with 50 nanosecond pulses at 1 MHz repetition rate. (-1.34 dB corrected for loss).
We demonstrate experimentally a scheme to measure small temporal delays, much smaller than the pulse width, between optical pulses. Specifically, we observe an interference effect, based on the concepts of quantum weak measurements and weak value amplification, through which a sub-pulsewidth temporal delay between two femtosecond pulses induces a measurable shift of the central frequency of the pulse. The amount of frequency shift, and the accompanying losses of the measurement, can be tailored by post-selecting different states of polarization. Our scheme requires only spectrum measurements a…
We propose a new technique for comparing two Raman active samples. The method employs optical interference of the signals generated via coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) of broadband laser pulses with noisy spectra. It does not require spectrally resolved detection, and no prior knowledge about either the Raman spectrum of the samples, or the spectrum of the incident light is needed. We study the proposed method theoretically, and demonstrate it in a proof-of-principle experiment on Toluene and ortho-Xylene samples.
We demonstrate quantum interference of three photons that are distinguishable in time, by resolving them in the conjugate parameter, frequency. We show that the multiphoton interference pattern in our setup can be manipulated by tuning the relative delays between the photons, without the need for reconfiguring the optical network. Furthermore, we observe that the symmetries of our optical network and the spectral amplitude of the input photons are manifested in the interference pattern. Moreover, we demonstrate time-reversed HOM-like interference in the spectral correlations using time-bin ent…
A scalable on-chip single-photon source at telecommunications wavelengths is an essential component of quantum communication networks. In this work, we numerically construct a pulse-regulated single-photon source based on an optical parametric amplifier in a nanocavity. Under the condition of pulsed excitation, we study the photon statistics of the source using the Monte Carlo wave-function method. The results show that there exits an optimum excitation pulse width for generating high-purity single photons, while the source brightness increases monotonically with increasing excitation pulse wi…
We report a two-photon interference effect, in which the entangled photon pairs are generated from two laser pulses well-separated in time. In a single pump pulse case, interference effects did not occur in our experimental scheme. However, by introducing a second pump pulse delayed in time, quantum interference was then observed. The visibility of the interference fringes shows dependence on the delay time between two laser pulses. The results are explained in terms of indistinguishability of biphoton amplitudes which originated from two temporally separated laser pulses.
We present experimental studies on the generation and detection of pulsed, relative-intensity squeezed light in a warm rubidium vapor. The noise correlations between a pulsed probe beam and its conjugate -generated through nearly-degenerate four-wave mixing in a double-lambda system- are studied via time-resolved balanced detection. We observe -0.96 dB of time-resolved relative intensity squeezing with 50 nanosecond pulses at 1 MHz repetition rate. (-1.34 dB corrected for loss).
Interference of laser pulses is an essential ingredient of quantum randomness; therefore, probabilistic properties of laser pulses gains new relevance. Here, we consider in detail the combined influence of the three effects - chirp, jitter and relaxation oscillations - on the probability density function of the interference of pulses from a gain-switched semiconductor laser. We develop a rigorous model based on laser rate equations and demonstrate that only consideration of all these three effects together allows describing the interference statistics properly. We supplement our theoretical ca…
A multi-dimensional semiclassical description of excitation of a Rydberg electron by half-cycle pulses is developed and applied to the study of energy- and angle-resolved ionization spectra. Characteristic novel phenomena observable in these spectra such as interference oscillations and semiclassical glory and rainbow scattering are discussed and related to the underlying classical dynamics of the Rydberg electron. Modifications to the predictions of the impulse approximation are examined that arise due to finite pulse durations.
We analyze two-center interference effects in the yields of ionization of a dissociating hydrogen molecular ion by an ultrashort VUV laser pulse. To this end, we performed numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a H$_2^+$ model ion interacting with two time-delayed laser pulses. The scenario considered corresponds to a pump-probe scheme, in which the first (pump) pulse excites the molecular ion to the first excited dissociative state and the second (probe) pulse ionizes the electron as the ion dissociates. The results of our numerical simulations for the ionization…
The present work focuses on the characterisation of the amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM) encoded in the twisted attosecond pulses via energy- and angle-resolved attosecond streaking in pump-probe setup. It is found that the photoelectron spectra generated by the linearly polarised twisted pulse with different OAM values exhibit angular modulations, whereas circularly polarised twisted pulse yields angular isotropic spectra. It is demonstrated that the energy- and angle-resolved streaking spectra are sensitive to the OAM values of the twisted pulse. Moreover, the different combinations …
We study the spectral properties of Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion in a periodically poled waveguided structure of KTP crystal pumped by ultra-short pulses. Our theoretical analysis reveals a strongly multimode and asymmetric structure of the two-photon spectral amplitude for type-II SPDC. Experimental evidence, based on Hong-Ou-Mandel polarization interference with narrowband filtering, confirms this result.
Interference between different photons occurs and has been observed under diverse experimental conditions. A necessary condition in order to obtain interference fringes is the existence of at least two possible paths and unknown which-path information. If the photon beams have different frequencies, stability of the sources and fast enough detectors are also required.First order interference between two truly independent CW laser sources is observed. Contrary to what is expected, interference is observed although the photon beams are distinguishable and the path is unequivocally known for each…
We report perfect two photon quantum interference with near-unity visibility in a resonant tunneling plasmonic structure in folded Kretschmann geometry. This is despite absorption-induced loss of unitarity in plasmonic systems. The effect is traced to perfect destructive interference between the squares of amplitude reflection and transmission coefficients. We further highlight yet another remarkable potential of coincidence measurements as a probe with better resolution as compared to standard spectroscopic techniques. The finer features show up in both angle resolved and frequency resolved s…
We investigate the liberation of an atomic electron by a linearly polarized single-cycle near-infrared laser pulse having a peak intensity that ensures tunneling. Based on phase space analysis and energy distribution in the instantaneous potential, we reveal the importance of quantum interference between tunneling and over-the-barrier pathways of escape. Tunneling is blurred both in space and time, and the contribution of tunneling at the mean energy is almost negligible. We suggest and justify improved initial conditions for a classical particle approximation of strong-field ionization, based…
Reradiation of a spatially non-uniform ultrashort electromagnetic pulse interacting with the linear chain of multielectron atoms is studied in the framework of sudden perturbation approximation. Angular distributions of the reradiation spectrum for arbitrary number of atoms are obtained. It is shown that interference effects for the photon radiation amplitudes lead to appearing of "diffraction" maximums. The obtained results can be extended to the case of two- and three-dimensional crystal lattices and atomic chains. The approach developed allows also to take into account thermal vibrations of…
A modified Hong--Ou--Mandel (HOM) interference reveals that the two-photon interference phenomenon can be explained only by the concept of a two-photon wave packet rather than a single-photon one. However, the temporal interferogram in the modified HOM interferometer becomes flat in some cases so that no useful information can be extracted from time-domain measurement. Here, we theoretically explore such temporal interferogram from the frequency domain and obtain the spectrally resolved interference with high visibility. The result represents a modulation of the joint spectral intensity along …
We describe a simple and efficient setup to generate and characterize femtosecond quadrature-entangled pulses. Quantum correlations equivalent to about 2.5 dB squeezing are efficiently and easily reached using the non-degenerate parametric amplification of femtosecond pulses through a single-pass in a thin (0.1 mm) potassium niobate crystal. The entangled pulses are then individually sampled to characterize the non-separability and the entropy of formation of the states. The complete experiment is analysed in the time-domain, from the pulsed source of quadrature entanglement to the time-resolv…
NOON state interference (NOON-SI) is a powerful tool to improve the phase sensing precision, and plays an important role in quantum measurement. In most of the previous NOON-SI experiments, the measurements were performed in time domain where the spectral information of the involved photons was integrated and lost during the measurement. In this work, we experimentally measured the joint spectral intensities (JSIs) at different positions of the interference patterns in both time and frequency domains. It was observed that the JSIs were phase-dependent and show odd (even)-number patterns at $0$…
Pairs of photons entangled in their time-frequency degree of freedom are of great interest in quantum optics research and applications, due to their relative ease of generation and their high capacity for encoding information. Here we analyze, both theoretically and experimentally, the behavior of phase-insensitive spectrally-resolved interferences arising from two pairs of time-frequency entangled photons. At its core, this is a multimode entanglement swapping experiment, whereby a spectrally resolved joint measurement on the idler photons from both pairs results in projecting the signal phot…
The interference of two independent single-photon pulses impinging on a beam splitter is analysed in a generalised time-resolved manner. Different aspects of the phenomenon are elaborated using different representations of the single-photon wave packets, like the decomposition into single-frequency field modes or spatio-temporal modes matching the photonic wave packets. Both representations lead to equivalent results, and a photon-by-photon analysis reveals that the quantum-mechanical two-photon interference can be interpreted as a classical one-photon interference once a first photon is detec…
We study the two-path interference of single-particle pulses measured by the Unruh-DeWitt-type quantum detector, which itself is a quantum state as well as the incoming pulse, and of which the interaction with the pulse is described by unitary quantum evolution instead of a nonunitary collapsing process. Provided that the quantum detector remains coherent in time long enough, the detection probability still manifests the two-path interference pattern even if the length difference between the two paths considerably exceeds the coherence length of the single-particle pulse, contrary to the resul…
We propose a method for quantum noise extraction from the interference of laser pulses with random phase. Our technique is based on the calculation of a parameter, which we called the quantum reduction factor, and which allows determining the contributions of quantum and classical noises in the assumption that classical fluctuations exhibit Gaussian distribution. To the best of our knowledge, the concept of the quantum reduction factor is introduced for the first time. We use such an approach to implement the post-processing-free optical quantum random number generator with the random bit gene…
The ability to entangle distant quantum nodes is essential for the construction of quantum networks and for quantum information processing. For solid-state quantum emitters used as qubits, it can be achieved by photon interference. When the emitter is subject to spectral diffusion, this process can become highly inefficient, impeding the achievement of scalable quantum technologies. We study two-photon interference in the context of a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM)-type experiment for two separate quantum emitters, with different detunings with respect to a specific target frequency. We evaluate the sec…
Resonant spontaneous bremsstrahlung of an electron scattered by a nucleus in the field of two moderately strong pulsed laser waves is studied theoretically. The process is studied in detail within the interference kinematic region. This region is determined by scattering of particles in the same plane at predetermined angles, at that stimulated absorption and emission of photons of external pulsed waves by an electron occurs in correlated manner. The correspondence between the emission angle and the final-electron energy is established in the kinematic region where the resonant parametric inte…
In this work, we analyze the behavior of continuum single-photon pulses in some quantum communication schemes. In particular, we consider the single-photon interference in a Mach-Zenhder interferometer, the HOM interference and the quantum bit commitment protocol.
We theoretically investigate the quantum interference of entangled two-photon states generated in a nonlinear crystal pumped by femtosecond optical pulses. Interference patterns generated by the polarization analog of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer are studied. Attention is devoted to the effects of the pump-pulse profile (pulse duration and chirp) and the second-order dispersion in both the nonlinear crystal and the interferometer's optical elements. Dispersion causes the interference pattern to have an asymmetric shape. Dispersion cancellation occurs in some cases.
To fully utilize the energy-time degree of freedom of photons for optical quantum information processes, it is necessary to control and characterize the quantum states of the photons at extremely short time scales. For measurements beyond the time resolution of available detectors, two-photon interference with a photon in a short time reference pulse may be a viable alternative. In this paper, we derive the temporal measurement operators for the bunching statistics of a single photon input state with a reference photon. It is shown that the effects of the pulse shape of the reference pulse can…
We experimentally demonstrated the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between two photons after visible-to-telecommunication wavelength conversion. In the experiment, we prepared a heralded single photon by using spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the other photon from a weak laser source at 780 nm. We converted the wavelength of both photons to the telecommunication wavelength of 1522 nm by using difference-frequency generation in a periodically-poled lithium niobate, and then observed the HOM interference between the photons. The observed visibility is $0.76\pm 0.12$ which clearly sho…
When a one-photon state is mixed with a (separate) weak coherent state at a beamsplitter the probability for detecting one photon in each beamsplitter output approaches zero due to destructive interference. We demonstrate this non-classical interference effect using pulse-gated single photons and weak mode-locked laser pulses.
Since the introduction of the decoy-state technique, phase-randomised weak coherent light pulses have been the key to increase the practicality of quantum-based communications. Their ultra-fast generation was accomplished via compact gain-switched (GS) lasers, leading to high key rates in quantum key distribution (QKD). Recently, the question arose of whether the same laser could be employed to achieve high-speed measurement-device-independent-QKD, a scheme that promises long-haul quantum communications immune to all detector attacks. For that, a challenging highvisibility interference between…
Quantum memories for light, which allow the reversible transfer of quantum states between light and matter, are central to the development of quantum repeaters, quantum networks, and linear optics quantum computing. Significant progress has been reported in recent years, including the faithful transfer of quantum information from photons in pure and entangled qubit states. However, none of these demonstrations confirm that photons stored in and recalled from quantum memories remain suitable for two-photon interference measurements, such as C-NOT gates and Bell-state measurements, which constit…
The Schwinger process in strong electric fields creates particles and antiparticles that are entangled. The entropy of entanglement between particles and antiparticles has been found to be equal to the statistical Gibbs entropy of the produced system. Here we study the effect of quantum interference in sequences of electric pulses, and show that quantum interference suppresses the entanglement entropy of the created quantum state. This is potentially relevant to quantum-enhanced classical communications. Our results can be extended to a wide variety of two-level quantum systems.
Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between independent photon sources (HOMI-IPS) is the fundamental block for quantum information processing, such as quantum gate, Shor's algorithm, Boson sampling, etc. All the previous HOMI-IPS experiments were carried out in time-domain, however, the spectral information during the interference was lost, due to technical difficulties. Here, we investigate the HOMI-IPS in spectral domain using the recently developed fast fiber spectrometer, and demonstrate the spectral distribution during the HOM interference between two heralded single-photon sources, and two…
Using the theoretical model of the optical beam-splitter, the interference of the self-phase modulated ultrashort light pulse (SPM-USP) with the coherent one is investigated. It is found that, the choice of the coefficient of transmission of the beam-splitter allows one to get the spectra of quadrature fluctuations with forms of interest to us. It is shown that the choice of the geometrical phase gives one the control of the position of the ellipse of squeezing in the quadrature space XY. The extended Mandel parameter is introduced and the photon statistics is scanned at all frequencies. It is…
We present simple new approximate formulas, for both scalar and spinor QED, for the number of particles produced from vacuum by a time dependent electric field, incorporating the interference effects that arise from an arbitrary number of distinct semiclassical turning points. Such interference effects are important when the temporal profile of the laser pulse has subcycle structure. We show how the resulting semiclassical intuition may be used to guide the design of temporal profiles that enhance the momentum spectrum due to interference effects. The result is easy to implement and generally …
We report on the observation of a high visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of two heralded photons emitted from a spontaneous parametric down conversion~(SPDC) pumped by continuous-wave~(cw) light. A non-degenerate photon pair at 1541~nm and 1580~nm is generated by cw-pumped SPDC through a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. The heralded single photon at 1541~nm is prepared by the detection of the photon at 1580~nm. We performed the experiment of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between heralded single photons in separated time bins and observed a high visibility interference. All …
Coherence among rotational ion channels during photoionization is exploited to control the anisotropy of the resulting photoelectron angular distributions at specific photoelectron energies. The strategy refers to a robust and single parameter control using two ultra-short light pulses delayed in time. The first pulse prepares a superposition of a few ion rotational states, whereas the second pulse serves as a probe that gives access to a control of the molecular asymmetry parameter $β$ for individual rotational channels. This is achieved by tuning the time delay between the pulses leading to …
Single-photon sources are at the heart of quantum-optical networks, with their uniquely quantum emission and phenomenon of two-photon interference allowing for the generation and transfer of nonclassical states. Although a few analytical methods have been briefly investigated for describing pulsed single-photon sources, these methods apply only to either perfectly ideal or at least extremely idealized sources. Here, we present the first complete picture of pulsed single-photon sources by elaborating how to numerically and fully characterize non-ideal single-photon sources operating in a pulsed…
The recent development of dynamic single-electron sources makes it possible to observe and manipulate the quantum properties of individual charge carriers in mesoscopic circuits. Here, we investigate multi-particle effects in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer driven by dynamic voltage pulses. To this end, we employ a Floquet scattering formalism to evaluate the interference current and the visibility in the outputs of the interferometer. An injected multi-particle state can be described by its first-order correlation function, which we decompose into a sum of elementary correlation fun…
A wide range of ultrafast phenomena in various atomic, molecular and condense matter systems is governed by electron dynamics. Therefore, the ability to image electronic motion in real space and real time would provide a deeper understanding of such processes and guide developments of tools to control them. Ultrashort light pulses, which can provide unprecedented time resolution approaching subfemtosecond time scale, are perspective to achieve real-time imaging of electron dynamics. This task is challenging not only from an experimental view, but also from a theory perspective, since standard …
Asymmetric spectral line shapes are a hallmark of interference of a quasi-bound state with a continuum of states. Such line shapes are well known for multichannel systems, for example, in photoionization or Feshbach resonances in molecular scattering. On the other hand, in resonant single channel scattering, the signature of such interference may disappear due to the orthogonality of partial waves. Here, we show that probing the angular dependence of the cross section allows us to unveil asymmetric Fano profiles also in a single channel shape resonance. We observe a shift in the peak of the re…
We analyze the formation of Rb_2 molecules with short photoassociation pulses applied to a cold Rb-85 sample. A pump laser pulse couples a continuum level of the ground electronic state X ^1Σ_{g}^+ with bound levels in the 0_{u}^+ (5S+5P_{1/2}) and 0_{u}^+ (5S+5P_{3/2}) vibrational series. The nonadiabatic coupling between the two excited channels induces time-dependent beatings in the populations. We propose to take advantage of these oscillations to design further laser pulses that probe the photoassociation process via photoionization or that optimize the stabilization in deep levels of the…
The dependence of one- and two-photon characteristics of pulsed entangled two-photon fields generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion on the pump-pulse properties (shape of the pump-pulse spectrum and its internal structure) is examined. It is shown that entangled two-photon fields with defined properties can be generated. A general relation between the spectra of the down-converted fields is established. As a special case interference of two partially overlapping pulsed two-photon fields is studied. Fourth-order interference pattern of entangled two-photon fields is investigated in …
The smallest spot in optical lithography and microscopy is generally limited by diffraction. Quantum lithography, which utilizes interference between groups of N entangled photons, was recently proposed to beat the diffraction limit by a factor N. Here we propose a simple method to obtain N photons interference with classical pulses that excite a narrow multiphoton transition, thus shifting the "quantum weight" from the electromagnetic field to the lithographic material. We show how a practical complete lithographic scheme can be developed and demonstrate the underlying principles experimental…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of phase-dependent interference effects in multi-photon excitation under bichromatic radio-frequency (rf) field. Using an intense rf pulse, we study the interference between the three-photon and one-photon transition between the Zeeman sub-levels of the ground state of $^{87}$Rb that allows us to determine the carrier-envelope phase of the fields even for long pulses.
Two-photon excitation (TPE) proceeds via a "virtual" pathway, which depends on the accessibility of one or more intermediate states, and, in the case of non-centrosymmetric molecules, an additional "dipole" pathway involving the off-resonance dipole-allowed one-photon transitions and the change in the permanent dipole moment between the initial and final states. Here, we control the quantum interference between these two optical excitation pathways by using phase-shaped femtosecond laser pulses. We find enhancements by a factor of up to 1.75 in the two-photon-excited fluorescence of the photob…
Ultrashort non-resonant electromagnetic pulses applied to effective one-electron systems may operate on the electronic state as a position or momentum translation operator. As derived here, extension to many-body correlated systems exposes qualitatively new aspects. For instance, to the lowest order in the electric field intensity the action of the pulse is expressible in terms of the two-body reduced density matrix enabling thus to probe various facets of electronic correlations. As an experimental realization we propose a pump-probe scheme in which after a weak, swift "kick" by the non-reson…
