We provide an extension of the Gravitational Decoupling (algorithm) for the Lovelock theory with Unique Vacuum (LUV), which represents a simple way to solve the equations of motion. Due to the application of this algorithm, the energy of the system splits in the {\it energy of the seed solution} and the {\it energy of each quasi-LUV sector}. Under certain assumptions imposed, the total energy varies due to the contribution of energy of each quasi-LUV sector. It is provided a new solution, whose energy differs from the energy of the seed solution in a quantity that depends on the number of extra sources. The new solution has two inner horizons, which is a proper characteristic of itself. Furthermore, its thermodynamics differs from the seed solution, since our solution is always stable and does not have phase transitions. Since the first law of thermodynamics is modified by the presence of the matter fields, we provide a new version of the first law for LUV, where a local definition of the variation of energy is defined, and, where the entropy and temperature are consistent for LUV theory.
We construct conserved quantities in pure Lovelock gravity for both static and dynamic Vaydia-type black holes with AdS, dS and flat asymptotics, applying field-theoretical formalism developed earlier. Global energy (where applicable), quasi-local energy together with fluxes of these quantities are presented for both types of black holes, considering asymptotic spacetime as background. The same quantities are constructed for dynamic black holes on the background of the related static black holes. Besides, for the dynamic black holes, energy densities and densities of energy flux are calculated…
Conserved currents and related superpotentials for perturbations on arbitrary backgrounds in the Lovelock theory are constructed. We use the Lagrangian based field-theoretical method where perturbations are considered as dynamical fields propagating on a given background. Such a formulation is exact (not approximate) and equivalent to the theory in the original metric form. From the very start, using Noether theorem, we derive the Noether-Klein identities and adopt them for the purposes of the current work. Applying these identities in the framework of Lovelock theory, we construct conserved c…
We derive conserved charges as quasi-local Hamiltonians by covariant phase space methods for a class of geometric Lagrangians that can be written in terms of the spin connection, the vielbein and possibly other tensorial form fields, allowing also for non-zero torsion. We then re-calculate certain known results and derive some new ones in three to six dimensions hopefully enlightening certain aspects of all of them. The quasi-local energy is defined in terms of the metric and not its first derivatives, requiring `regularization' for convergence in most cases. Counter-terms consistent with Diri…
We obtain the conserved Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT)-{\it like} current for the Lanczos-Lovelock gravity for a diffeomorphism vector, which defines the horizon of a spacetime and, importantly, is not necessarily a Killing vector. As the original ADT current is defined only for the presence of a background Killing vector, one cannot use it extensively for the thermodynamic description of the wide classes of non-Killing horizons which appear in gravity. On the other hand, this general approach can be utilized for those horizons. Here, the conserved current can be written as the derivative of the two…
We consider third order Lovelock gravity coupled to an U(1) gauge field for which its Lagrangian is given by a power of Maxwell invariant. In this paper, we present a class of horizon flat rotating black branes and investigate their geometrical properties and the effect of nonlinearity on the solutions. We use some known formulas and methods to calculate thermodynamic and conserved quantities. Finally, we check the satisfaction of the first law of thermodynamics.
In this work it is introduced an extension of the study of the first law of thermodynamics of black holes based on the geometry of the extended phase space for AdS Lovelock gravities which includes changes of scales. As expected, the result obtained coincides with the previously known four dimensional case. For higher dimensions, the result is the arise of two new contributions to the first law of thermodynamics. The first term corresponds to corrections of the usual definition of thermodynamics volume at the horizon, due to the presence of the higher curvature terms. The second term arises in…
A definite form for the boundary term that produces the finiteness of both the conserved quantities and Euclidean action for any Lovelock gravity with AdS asymptotics is presented. This prescription merely tells even from odd bulk dimensions, regardless the particular theory considered, what is valid even for Einstein-Hilbert and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity. The boundary term is a given polynomial of the boundary extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures (also referred to as Kounterterms series). Only the coupling constant of the boundary term changes accordingly, such that it always preserves …
We derive an expression for conserved charges in Lovelock AdS gravity for solutions having $k$-fold degenerate vacua, making manifest a link between the degeneracy of a given vacuum and the nonlinearity of the energy formula. We show for a black hole solution to the field equations on a branch of multiplicity $k$ that its mass comes from an expression that contains the product of $k$ Weyl tensors. We prove that all divergent contributions of the type (Weyl)$^q$, with $1\le q<k$, are suppressed. Our conserved charge definition is a natural generalization of the Conformal Mass by Ashtekar, Magno…
In this paper, we obtain topological black hole solutions of third order Lovelock gravity couple with two classes of Born-Infeld type nonlinear electrodynamics with anti-de Sitter asymptotic structure. We investigate geometric and thermodynamics properties of the solutions and obtain conserved quantities of the black holes. We examine the first law of thermodynamics and find that the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the black hole solutions satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we calculate the heat capacity and determinant of Hessian matrix to evaluate thermal stability i…
Starting from the SO(2,2n) Chern-Simons form in (2n+1) dimensions we calculate the variation of conserved quantities in Lovelock gravity and Lovelock-Maxwell gravity through the covariant formalism developed in gr-qc/0305047. Despite the technical complexity of the Lovelock Lagrangian we obtain a remarkably simple expression for the variation of the charges ensuing from the diffeomorphism covariance of the theory. The viability of the result is tested in specific applications and the formal expression for the entropy of Lovelock black holes is recovered.
A study of Universal thermodynamics is done in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The Universe is chosen as FRW model bounded by apparent or event horizon. The unified first law is examined, assuming extended Hawking temperature on the horizon. As a result there is a modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizons. Further the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium are also investigated for perfect fluid (with constant equation of state), modified chaplygin gas model and holographic dark energy model.
It is shown that the notion of Conformal Mass can be defined within a given anti-de Sitter (AdS) branch of a Lovelock gravity theory as long as the corresponding vacuum is not degenerate. Indeed, conserved charges obtained by the addition of Kounterterms to the bulk action turn out to be proportional to the electric part of the Weyl tensor, when the fall-off of a generic solution in that AdS branch is considered. The factor of proportionality is the degeneracy condition for the vacua in the particular Lovelock AdS theory under study. This last feature explains the obstruction to define Conform…
We investigate the thermodynamics of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We begin by introducing the finite action of third order Lovelock gravity in the presence of a massive vector field for a flat boundary, and use it to compute the energy density of these black branes. Using the field equations, we find a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that relates the metric parameters at the horizon and at infinity. Remarkably, though the subleading large-$r$ behavior of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes differs substantively from their Einsteinian Lifshitz counterparts, we find that the relationsh…
We revisit the spherically symmetric third order Lovelock black hole solution in 7-dimensions. We show that the general solution for the metric function does not admit the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) limit. This is not expected due to the linear superposition of the second (GB) and third order Lovelock Lagrangians in the general action. It is found that the two branches of the GB solutions are indeed the limit of the other two complex solutions of the field equations in the third order Lovelock gravity. These two complex solutions could not be accepted as the solutions of the Einstein's field equations …
We investigate the thermodynamics of rotating Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the solutions and obtain a relation between temperature, angular velocity, energy density, entropy density and angular momentum density. We, also, obtain a Smarr-type formula for the energy density as a function of entropy and angular momentum densities, and show that the thermodynamic quantities calculated in this paper satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we investigate the stability of black brane solutions in both canonical and grand-canonica…
In this paper, we combine Lovelock gravity with gravity's rainbow to construct Lovelock gravity's rainbow. Considering the Lovelock gravity's rainbow coupled to linear and also nonlinear electromagnetic gauge fields, we present two new classes of topological black hole solutions. We compute conserved and thermodynamic quantities of these black holes (such as temperature, entropy, electric potential, charge and mass) and show that these quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. In order to study the thermal stability in canonical ensemble, we calculate the heat capacity and determinan…
We compute the mass and the temperature of third order Lovelock black holes with negative Gauss-Bonnet coefficient $α_2<0$ in anti-de Sitter space and perform the stability analysis of topological black holes. When $k=-1$, the third order Lovelock black holes are thermodynamically stable for the whole range $r_+$. When $k=1$, we found that the black hole has an intermediate unstable phase for $D=7$. In eight dimensional spacetimes, however, a new phase of thermodynamically unstable small black holes appears if the coefficient $\tildeα$ is under a critical value. For $D\geq 9$, black holes have…
We study the initial value problem for Lovelock and Horndeski theories of gravity. We show that the equations of motion of these theories can be written in a form that, at weak coupling, is strongly hyperbolic and therefore admits a well-posed initial value problem. This is achieved by introducing a new class of "modified harmonic" gauges for general relativity.
In this paper, using the combined Lorentz-diffeomorphism symmetry, we find a general formula for quasi-local conserved charge of the covariant gravity theories in first order formalism of gravity. We simplify the general formula for Lovelock theory of gravity. Afterwards, we apply the obtained formula on BHT gravity to obtain energy and angular momentum of the rotating OTT black hole solution in the context of this theory.
Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, in its first order version, are studied on asymptotically locally anti de Sitter spaces. It is shown that thermodynamics satisfies the standard behavior and an expression for entropy is found for this formalism. Finally a short analysis of the algebra of conserved charges is displayed.
We study thermodynamics of black hole solutions in Lanczos-Lovelock AdS gravity in d+1 dimensions coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics and a Stueckelberg scalar field. This class of theories is used in the context of gauge/gravity duality to describe a high-temperature superconductor in d dimensions. Larger number of coupling constants in the gravitational side is necessary to widen a domain of validity of physical quantities in a dual QFT. We regularize the gravitational action and find the finite conserved quantities for a planar black hole with scalar hair. Then we derive the quantum statis…
We review and discuss some recent progress in Lovelock and Horndeski theories modifying Einstein's General Relativity. Using as our guide the uniqueness properties of these modified gravity theories we then discuss how Kaluza-Klein reduction of Lovelock theory can lead to effective scalar-tensor actions including several important terms of Horndeski theory. We show how this can be put to practical use by mapping analytic black hole solutions of one theory to the other. We then elaborate on the subset of Horndeski theory that has self-tuning properties and review a generic method giving scalar-…
The gravitational interaction is expected to be modified for very short distances. This is particularly important in situations in which the curvature of spacetime is large in general, such as close to the initial cosmological singularity. The gravitational dynamics is then captured by the higher curvature terms in the action, making it difficult to reliably extrapolate any prediction of general relativity. In this note we review pure Lovelock equations for Kasner-type metrics. These equations correspond to a single $N$th order Lovelock term in the action in $d=2N+1,\,2N+2$ dimensions, and the…
We construct the conserved charges (mass and angular momentum) of the Chern-Simons modified General Relativity in asymptotically flat and Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. Our definition is based on background Killing symmetries and reduces to the known expressions in the proper limits.
In this work, conserved charges and fluxes at the future null infinity are determined in the asymptotically flat spacetime for Chern-Simons modified gravity. The flux-balance laws are used to constrain the memory effects. For tensor memories, the Penrose's conformal completion method is used to analyze the asymptotic structures and asymptotic symmetries, and then, conserved charges for the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra are constructed with the Wald-Zoupas formalism. These charges take very similar forms to those in Brans-Dicke theory. For the scalar memory, Chern-Simons modified gravity is rewri…
The emergent gravity paradigm interprets gravitational field equations as describing the thermodynamic limit of the underlying statistical mechanics of microscopic degrees of freedom of the spacetime. The connection is established by attributing a heat density Ts to the null surfaces where T is the appropriate Davies-Unruh temperature and s is the entropy density. The field equations can be obtained from a thermodynamic variational principle which extremizes the total heat density of all null surfaces. The explicit form of s determines the nature of the theory. We explore the consequences of t…
We consider modified theories of gravity with a direct coupling between matter and geometry, denoted by an arbitrary function in terms of the Ricci scalar. Due to such a coupling, the matter stress tensor is no longer conserved and there is an energy transfer between the two components. By solving the conservation equation, we argue that the matter system should gain energy in this interaction, as demanded by the second law of thermodynamics. In a cosmological setting, we show that although this kind of interaction may account for cosmic acceleration, this latter together with direction of the…
We propose the modified form of the conventional holographic conserved charges which provides us the frame-independent expressions for charges. This form is also preferable to the conventional one since it is independent of the holographic renormalization scheme. We show the frame and scheme independence through the matching of our holographic expression to the covariant bulk expression of conserved charges. As an explicit example, we consider five-dimensional AdS Kerr black holes and show that our form of holographic conserved charges gives us the identical expressions in the rotating and non…
We explore the relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and gravitational field equation at a static, spherically symmetric black hole horizon in Hořava-Lifshtiz theory with/without detailed balance. It turns out that as in the cases of Einstein gravity and Lovelock gravity, the gravitational field equation can be cast to a form of the first law of thermodynamics at the black hole horizon. This way we obtain the expressions for entropy and mass in terms of black hole horizon, consistent with those from other approaches. We also define a generalized Misner-Sharp energy for static, s…
We construct the quartic version of generalized quasi-topological gravity, which was recently constructed to cubic order in arXiv: 1703.01631. This class of theories includes Lovelock gravity and a known form of quartic quasi-topological gravity as special cases and possess a number of remarkable properties: (i) In vacuum, or in the presence of suitable matter, there is a single independent field equation which is a total derivative. (ii) At the linearized level, the equations of motion on a maximally symmetric background are second order, coinciding with the linearized Einstein equations up t…
We study conserved charges and thermodynamics of analytic rotating anti-de Sitter black holes with extended horizon topology -- also known as black strings -- in dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. The solution is supported by a scalar field with an axionic profile that depends linearly on the coordinate that spans the string. We compute conserved charges by making use of the renormalized boundary stress-energy tensor. Then, by adopting the Noether-Wald formalism, we compute the black string entropy and obtain its area law. Indeed, the reduced Euclidean Hamiltonian approach shows that the…
Generalized Noether's theory is a useful method for researching the modified gravity theories about the conserved quantities and symmetries. A generally Gauss-Bonnet gravity $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ theory was proposed as an alternative gravity model. Through the generalized Noether symmetry, polynomial and product forms of the $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ theory with corresponding conserved quantities and symmetries are researched. Then suitable general forms of the polynomial form $f(R,\mathcal{G}) \!=\! k_1 R^n + (6)^{\frac{n}{2}}(-1)^{n+1} k_1 \mathcal{G}^{\frac{n}{2}}$ and the product form $f(R,\mathcal{…
In this paper, we investigate the newly developed $f(R,\mathbf{T}^2)$ theory ($R$ is the Ricci scalar and $\mathbf{T}^2=T_{αβ}T^{αβ},~T _{αβ}$ demonstrates the energy-momentum tensor) to explore some viable cosmological models. For this purpose, we use the Noether symmetry approach in the context of flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe. We solve the Noether equations of this modified theory for two types of models and obtain the symmetry generators as well as corresponding conserved quantities. We also evaluate exact solutions and investigate their physical behavior via different cos…
We investigate the equilibrium and radial stability of spherically symmetric relativistic stars, considering a polytropic equation of state (EoS), within the framework of $f(R,T)$ gravity with a conservative energy-momentum tensor. Both modified stellar structure equations and Chandrasekhar's pulsation equations are derived for the $f(R,T)= R+ h(T)$ gravity model, where the function $h(T)$ assumes a specific form in order to safeguard the conservation equation for the energy-momentum tensor. The neutron star properties, such as radius, mass, binding energy and oscillation spectrum are studied …
Noether's theory offers us a useful tool to research the conserved quantities and symmetries of the modified gravity theories, among which the $f(T)$ theory, a generally modified teleparallel gravity, has been proposed to account for the dark energy phenomena. By the Noether symmetry approach, we investigate the power-law, exponential and polynomial forms of $f(T)$ theories. All forms of $f(T)$ concerned in this work possess the time translational symmetry, which is related with energy condition or Hamilton constraint. In addition, we find out that the performances of the power-law and exponen…
