Our solution surpasses the performance of similarly sized models and is also competitive with larger models. A special feature of our solutio…
Most of the weights in a Lightweight Neural Network have a value of zero, while the remaining ones are either +1 or -1. These universal approximators require approximately 1.1 bits/weight of storage, posses a quick forward pass and achieve classification accuracies similar to conventional continuous-weight networks. Their training regimen focuses on error reduction initially, but later emphasizes discretization of weights. They ignore insignificant inputs, remove unnecessary weights, and drop unneeded hidden neurons. We have successfully tested them on the MNIST, credit card fraud, and credit …

Our algorithm draws ideas from (1) isotonic regression for learning neural networks and (2) landscape analysis of non-convex matrix factorization problems. We believe these findings may inspire further development in designing provable algorithms for learning neural networks and other…

In sentence modeling and classification, convolutional neural network approaches have recently achieved state-of-the-art results, but all such efforts process word vectors sequentially and neglect long-distance dependencies. To exploit both deep learning and linguistic structures, we propose a tree-based convolutional neural network model which exploit various long-distance relationships between words. Our model improves the sequential baselines on all three sentiment and question classification tasks, and achieves the highest published accuracy on TREC.
In this paper, we design lightweight graph convolutional networks (GCNs) using a particular class of regularizers, dubbed as phase-field models (PFMs). PFMs exhibit a bi-phase behavior using a particular ultra-local term that allows training both the topology and the weight parameters of GCNs as a part of a single "end-to-end" optimization problem. Our proposed solution also relies on a reparametrization that pushes the mask of the topology towards binary values leading to effective topology selection and high generalization while implementing any targeted pruning rate. Both masks and weights …

We implement the zero activation predictor (ZAP) with a lightweight CNN, which imposes negligible overheads and is easy to deploy on exis…
Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) aim at extending deep learning to arbitrary irregular domains, namely graphs. Their success is highly dependent on how the topology of input graphs is defined and most of the existing GCN architectures rely on predefined or handcrafted graph structures. In this paper, we introduce a novel method that learns the topology (or connectivity) of input graphs as a part of GCN design. The main contribution of our method resides in building an orthogonal connectivity basis that optimally aggregates nodes, through their neighborhood, prior to achieve convolution. Our…

This paper introduces a lightweight convolutional neural network, called FDDWNet, for real-time accurate semantic segmentation. In contrast to recent advances of lightweight networks that prefer to utilize shallow structure, FDDWNet makes an effort to design more deeper network architecture, while maintains faster inference speed and higher segmentation accuracy. Our network uses factorized dilated depth-wise separable convolutions (FDDWC) to learn feature representations from different scale receptive fields with fewer model parameters. Additionally, FDDWNet has multiple branches of skipped c…
End-to-end learning methods have achieved impressive results in many areas of computer vision. At the same time, these methods still suffer from a degradation in performance when testing on new datasets that stem from a different distribution. This is known as the domain shift effect. Recently proposed adaptation methods focus on retraining the network parameters. However, this requires access to all (labeled) source data, a large amount of (unlabeled) target data, and plenty of computational resources. In this work, we propose a lightweight alternative, that allows adapting to the target doma…
To improve the discriminative and generalization ability of lightweight network for face recognition, we propose an efficient variable group convolutional network called VarGFaceNet. We employ variable group convolution to design our network which can support large scale face identification while reduce computational cost and parameters. Specifically, we use a head setting to reserve essential information at the start of the net…

Graph convolution networks (GCNs) are currently mainstream in learning with irregular data. These models rely on message passing and attention mechanisms that capture context and node-to-node relationships. With multi-head attention, GCNs become highly accurate but oversized, and their deployment on cheap devices requires their pruning. However, pruning at high regimes usually leads to topologically inconsistent networks with weak generalization. In this paper, we devise a novel method for lightweight GCN design. Our proposed approach parses and selects subnetworks with the highest magnitudes …

To address this challenge, we propose a neighborhood attention (NA) module that upgrades the standard convolution with a self-attention mechanism. We propose a lightweight retrieval-based pipeline to predict 6DOF camera poses from RGB images. Our pipeline uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to encode a query image as a feature vector. A nearest neighbor lookup finds the pose-wise nearest database image. A siamese convolutional neural network regresses the relative pose from the nearest neighboring database image to the query image. The relative pose is then applied to the nearest neighboring absolute pose to obtain the query image's final absolute pose prediction. Our model is a distilled version of NN-Net that reduces its paramete…

However, most of these methods suffer from a lack of robust scale estimation skills. Although a wide range of recent DCF-based methods exploit the features that are extracted from deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in their translation model, the scale of the visual target is still estimated by hand-crafted features. Whereas the exploitation of CNNs imposes a high computational burden, this paper exploits pre-trained lightweight CNNs models to propose two efficie…
