Quantum corrections to holographic entanglement entropy require knowledge of the bulk quantum state. In this paper, we derive a novel dual prescription for the generalized entropy that allows us to interpret the leading quantum corrections in a geometric way with minimal input from the bulk state. The equivalence is proven using tools borrowed from convex optimization. The new prescription does not involve bulk surfaces but instead uses a generalized notion of a flow, which allows for possible sources or sinks in the bulk geometry. In its discrete version, our prescription can alternatively be interpreted in terms of a set of Planck-thickness bit threads, which can be either classical or quantum. This interpretation uncovers an aspect of the generalized entropy that admits a neat information-theoretic description, namely, the fact that the quantum corrections can be cast in terms of entanglement distillation of the bulk state. We also prove some general properties of our prescription, including nesting and a quantum version of the max multiflow theorem. These properties are used to verify that our proposal respects known inequalities that a von Neumann entropy must satisfy, including subadditivity and strong subadditivity, as well as to investigate the fate of the holographic monogamy. Finally, using the Iyer-Wald formalism we show that for cases with a local modular Hamiltonian there is always a canonical solution to the program that exploits the property of bulk locality. Combining with previous results by Swingle and Van Raamsdonk, we show that the consistency of this special solution requires the semi-classical Einstein's equations to hold for any consistent perturbative bulk quantum state.
We construct a new toy model of the holographic principle, named as holographic qubit threads model, which is an enlightening step towards the issue of spacetime emergence ("it from qubit"). More specifically, we propose for the first time that each bit thread in a locking bit thread configuration is in a "qubit" state, i.e., the quantum superposition state of two orthogonal states. Using this thread/state correspondence, we can construct the explicit expressions for the SS states corresponding to a set of bulk extremal surfaces in the surface/state correspondence, and nicely characterize thei…
We apply the bit thread formulation of holographic entanglement entropy to reduced states describing only the geometry contained within an entanglement wedge. We argue that a certain optimized bit thread configuration, which we construct, gives a purification of the reduced state to a full holographic state obeying a precise set of conditional mutual information relations. When this purification exists, we establish, under certain assumptions, the conjectured $E_P = E_W$ relation equating the entanglement of purification with the area of the minimal cross section partitioning the bulk entangle…
We revisit the recent reformulation of the holographic prescription to compute entanglement entropy in terms of a convex optimization problem, introduced by Freedman and Headrick. According to it, the holographic entanglement entropy associated to a boundary region is given by the maximum flux of a bounded, divergenceless vector field, through the corresponding region. Our work leads to two main results: (i) We present a general algorithm that allows the construction of explicit thread configurations in cases where the minimal surface is known. We illustrate the method with simple examples: sp…
The continuous min flow-max cut principle is used to reformulate the 'complexity=volume' conjecture using Lorentzian flows -- divergenceless norm-bounded timelike vector fields whose minimum flux through a boundary subregion is equal to the volume of the homologous maximal bulk Cauchy slice. The nesting property is used to show the rate of complexity is bounded below by "conditional complexity", describing a multi-step optimization with intermediate and final target states. Conceptually, discretized Lorentzian flows are interpreted in terms of threads or gatelines such that complexity is equal…
Starting from an interesting coincidence between the bit threads and SS (surface/state) correspondence, both of which are closely related to the holographic RT formula, we introduce a property of bit threads that has not been explicitly proposed before, which can be referred to as thread/state correspondence (see~\cite{Lin:2022agc} for a brief pre-release version). Using this thread/state correspondence, we can construct the explicit expressions for the SS states corresponding to a set of bulk extremal surfaces in the SS correspondence, and nicely characterize their entanglement structure. Bas…
The entanglement of purification (EoP), which measures the classical correlations and entanglement of a given mixed state, has been conjectured to be dual to the area of the minimal cross section of the entanglement wedge in holography. Using the surface-state correspondence, we propose a `bit thread' formulation of the EoP. With this formulation, proofs of some known properties of the EoP are performed. Moreover, we show that the quantum advantage of dense code (QAoDC), which reflects the increase in the rate of classical information transmission through quantum channel due to entanglement, a…
Generalizing the bit thread formalism, we use convex duality to derive dual flow programs to the bipartite and multipartite holographic entanglement of purification proposals and then prove several inequalities using these constructions. In the multipartite case we find the flows exhibit novel behavior which allows for a constrained flux on the boundary of the homology region. We show this flux can be made distinct from bipartite terms and reflects the truly multipartite portion of the holographic entanglement of purification.
The Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula is a crucial concept in current theory of gauge-gravity duality and emergent phenomena of geometry. Recent reinterpretation of this formula in terms of a set of "bit threads" is an interesting effort in understanding holography. In this paper, we investigate a quantum generalization of the "bit threads" based on tensor network, with particular interests in the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). We demonstrate that, in the large $c$ limit, isometries of the MERA can be regarded as "sources" (or "sinks") of the information flow, which extensiv…
In this Essay we address several fundamental issues in cosmology: What is the nature of dark energy and dark matter? Why is the dark sector so different from ordinary matter? Why is the effective cosmological constant non-zero but so incredibly small? What is the reason behind the emergence of a critical acceleration parameter of magnitude $10^{-8} cm/sec^2$ in galactic dynamics? We suggest that the holographic principle is the linchpin in a unified scheme to understand these various issues.
There are increasing evidences that quantum information theory has come to play a fundamental role in quantum gravity especially the holography. In this paper, we show some new potential connections between holography and quantum information theory. Particularly, by utilizing the multiflow description of the holographic entanglement of purification (HEoP) defined in relative homology, we obtain several new inequalities of HEoP under a max multiflow configuration. Each inequality derived for HEoP has a corresponding inequality of the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE). This is further confi…
Bit threads provide an alternative description of holographic entanglement, replacing the Ryu-Takayanagi minimal surface with bulk curves connecting pairs of boundary points. We use bit threads to prove the monogamy of mutual information (MMI) property of holographic entanglement entropies. This is accomplished using the concept of a so-called multicommodity flow, adapted from the network setting, and tools from the theory of convex optimization. Based on the bit thread picture, we conjecture a general ansatz for a holographic state, involving only bipartite and perfect-tensor type entanglemen…
We generalize holographic bit threads to bulk theories with a gravitational action containing higher-curvature terms. Bit threads are a reformulation of holographic entanglement entropy, where the entropy is given by the maximum number of threads emanating from a boundary region into the bulk. We show that the addition of higher-curvature terms adds corrections to the bit thread thickness that depend on the local geometry and thread orientation. Two different methods are given: determination of the density bound by requiring the maximum number of threads through a given surface to reproduce th…
We investigate the relations between bit thread, entanglement distillation and entanglement of purification in the holographic framework. Specifically, we give a bit thread interpretation for the one-shot entanglement distillation (OSED) tensor network, which can be understood as reconstructing the geometric structure of the bulk spacetime from the entanglement information of the boundary quantum system through the "surface growth scheme". Moreover, by showing that the holographic entanglement of purification (EoP) process can be regarded as a special case of our "surface growth scheme", we na…

In the context of holography, entanglement entropy can be studied either by i) extremal surfaces or ii) bit threads, i.e., divergenceless vector fields with a norm bound set by the Planck length. In this paper we develop a new method for metric reconstruction based on the latter approach and show the advantages over existing ones. We start by studying general linear perturbations around the vacuum state. Generic thread configurations turn out to encode the information about the metric in a highly nonlocal way, however, we show that for boundary regions with a local modular Hamiltonian there is…
We generalize bit threads to hyperthreads in the context of holographic spacetimes. We define a "$k$-thread" to be a hyperthread which connects $k$ different boundary regions and posit that it may be considered as a unit of $k$-party entanglement. Using this new object, we show that the contribution of hyperthreads to calculations of holographic entanglement entropy are generically finite. This is accomplished by constructing a surface whose area determines their maximum allowed contribution. We also identify surfaces whose area is proportional to the maximum number of $k$-threads, motivating …
In the holographic framework, we argue that the partial entanglement entropy (PEE) can be explicitly interpreted as the component flow flux in a locking bit thread configuration. By applying the locking theorem of bit threads, and constructing a concrete locking scheme, we obtain a set of uniquely determined component flow fluxes from this viewpoint, and successfully derive the PEE proposal and its generalized version in the multipartite cases. Moreover, from this perspective of bit threads, we also present a coherent explanation for the coincidence between the BPE (balanced partial entangleme…
Holographic entanglement entropy was recently recast in terms of Riemannian flows or 'bit threads'. We consider the Lorentzian analog to reformulate the 'complexity=volume' conjecture using Lorentzian flows -- timelike vector fields whose minimum flux through a boundary subregion is equal to the volume of the homologous maximal bulk Cauchy slice. By the nesting of Lorentzian flows, holographic complexity is shown to obey a number of properties. Particularly, the rate of complexity is bounded below by conditional complexity, describing a multi-step optimization with intermediate and final targe…
Recent work has characterized the various inequalities that entanglement entropies represented by min-cuts on hypergraphs will satisfy. This collection, the hypergraph entropy cone, can be seen as a generalization of the holographic entropy cone which describes the entropies given by both min-cuts on 2-graphs and those of holographic states in AdS/CFT. In this article we describe a generalization of bit threads which allows us to describe max multiflows on hypergraphs. We further comment on its properties and interpretation in holography.
We study the partial entanglement entropy (PEE) aspects of the holographic BCFT setup with an entanglement island, inspired by the holographic triality of the AdS/BCFT setup developed in the recent study on the black hole information problem, and the "PEE=CFF (component flow flux)" prescription, which is proposed recently to investigate the holographic PEE in the framework of bit thread formulation. Our study provides a bit thread description of the AdS/BCFT setup, which characterizes the specific entanglement details between the different parts of the system with an entanglement island, and m…
We study the entanglement contour, a quasi-local measure of entanglement, and propose a generic formula for the contour in 1+1d quantum systems. We use this formalism to investigate the real space entanglement structure of various static CFTs as well as local and global quantum quenches. The global quench elucidates the spatial distribution of entanglement entropy in strongly interacting CFTs and clarifies the interpretation of the entanglement tsunami picture. The entanglement tsunami effectively characterizes the non-local growth of entanglement entropy while the contour characterizes the lo…

The Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula relates the entanglement entropy of a region in a holographic theory to the area of a corresponding bulk minimal surface. Using the max flow-min cut principle, a theorem from network theory, we rewrite the RT formula in a way that does not make reference to the minimal surface. Instead, we invoke the notion of a "flow", defined as a divergenceless norm-bounded vector field, or equivalently a set of Planck-thickness "bit threads". The entanglement entropy of a boundary region is given by the maximum flux out of it of any flow, or equivalently the maximum number o…
Recently, an effective {\it membrane theory} was proposed that describes the ``hydrodynamic'' regime of the entanglement dynamics for general chaotic systems. Motivated by the new {\it bit threads} formulation of holographic entanglement entropy, given in terms of a convex optimization problem based on flow maximization, or equivalently tight packing of bit threads, we reformulate the membrane theory as a max flow problem by proving a max flow-min cut theorem. In the context of holography, we explain the relation between the max flow program dual to the membrane theory and the max flow program…

In this paper, by using Verlinde's formalism and a modified Padmanabhan's prescription, we have obtained the lowest order quantum correction to the gravitational acceleration and MOND-type theory by considering a nonzero difference between the number of bits of the holographic screen and number of bits of the holographic screen that satisfy the equipartition theorem. We will also carry out a phase transition and critical phenomena analysis in MOND-type theory where critical exponents are obtained.
In this note, we describe how collections of arbitrary numbers of "BC-bits," distinct non-interacting quantum systems each consisting of a holographic boundary conformal field theory (BCFT), can be placed in multipartite entangled states in order to encode single connected bulk spacetimes that approximate geometries dual to holographic CFT states. The BC-bit version of a holographic CFT state corresponds to a geometry that can be made arbitrarily similar to the associated CFT-state geometry within a "causal diamond" region defined by points that are spacelike separated from the boundary time s…
We study the covariant holographic entropy bound from an operational standpoint. Therefore we consider the physical limit for observations on a light-sheet. A light-sheet is a particular null hypersurface, and the natural measuring apparatus is a screen. By considering the physical properties of the screen - as dictated by quantum mechanics - we derive an uncertainty relation. This connects the number of bits of decoded information on the light-sheet to two geometric uncertainties: the uncertainty on the place where the bits are located and the uncertainty on the local expansion of the light-s…
We use the 'bit thread' formulation of holographic entanglement entropy to highlight the distinction between the universally-valid strong subadditivity and the more restrictive relation called monogamy of mutual information (MMI), known to hold for geometrical states (i.e. states of holographic theories with gravitational duals describing a classical bulk geometry). In particular, we provide a novel proof of MMI, using bit threads directly. To this end, we present an explicit geometrical construction of cooperative flows which we build out of disjoint thread bundles. We conjecture that our met…
It is suggested that quantum entanglement emerges from the holographic principle stating that all of the information of a region (bulk bits) can be described by the bits on its boundary surface. There are redundancy and information loss in the bulk bits that lead to the nonlocal correlation among the bulk bits. Quantum field theory overestimates the independent degrees of freedom in the bulk. The maximum entanglement in the universe increases as the size of the cosmic horizon and this could be related with the arrow of time and dark energy.
Superconductors in a cylindrical geometry respond periodically to a cylinder-threading magnetic flux, with the period changing from hc/2e to hc/e depending on whether the Aharonov-Bohm effects are suppressed or not. We show that Holographic Superconductors present a similar phenomenon, and that the different periodicities follow from classical no-hair theorems. We also give the Ginzburg-Landau description of the period-doubling phenomenon.
The quantum-classical isomorphism for self-consistent field theory, which allows quantum particles in space-time to be represented as classical one-dimensional threads embedded in a five dimensional thermal-space-time, is summarized and used to explain a selection of quantum phenomena. Introduced by Feynman, and used for modern quantum simulations, the isomorphism, when phrased in a field-theoretic way, has been shown to be the same as quantum density functional theory, the theorems of which guarantee equivalent predictions with non-relativistic quantum mechanics. If the Feynman dimension is c…
We study the conjectured holographic duality between entanglement of purification and the entanglement wedge cross-section. We generalize both quantities and prove several information theoretic inequalities involving them. These include upper bounds on conditional mutual information and tripartite information, as well as a lower bound for tripartite information. These inequalities are proven both holographically and for general quantum states. In addition, we use the cyclic entropy inequalities to derive a new holographic inequality for the entanglement wedge cross-section, and provide numeric…
The holographic entropy bound is used to estimate the quantum-gravitational discreteness of inflationary perturbations. In the context of scalar inflaton perturbations produced during standard slow-roll inflation, but assuming that horizon-scale perturbations ``freeze out'' in discrete steps separated by one bit of total observable entropy, it is shown that the Hilbert space of a typical horizon-scale inflaton perturbation is equivalent to that of about 10^5 binary spins-- approximately the inverse of the final scalar metric perturbation amplitude, independent of other parameters. Holography t…
We study the evolution of holographic screens, both generally and in explicit examples, including cosmology and gravitational collapse. A screen $H$ consists of a one-parameter sequence of maximal surfaces called leaves. Its causal structure is nonrelativistic. Each leaf can store all of the quantum information on a corresponding null slice holographically, at no more than one bit per Planck area. Therefore, we expect the screen geometry to reflect certain coarse-grained quantities in the quantum gravity theory. In a given spacetime, there are many different screens, which are naturally associ…
Bit threads, a dual description of the Ryu-Takyanagi formula for holographic entanglement entropy (EE), can be interpreted as a distillation of the quantum information to a collection of Bell pairs between different boundary regions. In this article we discuss a generalization to hyperthreads which can connect more than two boundary regions leading to a rich and diverse class of convex programs. By modeling the contributions of different species of hyperthreads to the EEs of perfect tensors we argue that this framework may be useful for helping us to begin to probe the multipartite entanglemen…
In this work we reason that there is a universal picture for several different holographic toy model constructions, and a gravity-like bulk field theory that gives rise it. First, we observe that the perfect tensor-networks and hyperbolic fracton models are both equivalent to the even distribution of bit-threads on geodesics in the AdS space. Such picture is also a natural "leading-order" approximation to the holographic entanglement properties. Then, we argue that the rank-2 U(1) theory with linearized diffeomorphism as its gauge symmetry, also known as a case of Lifshitz gravity, is the bulk…
Bilocal holography is a constructive approach to the higher spin theory holographically dual to $O(N)$ vector models. In contrast to other approaches to bulk reconstruction, bilocal holography does not take input from the dual gravitational theory. The resulting map is a complete bulk/boundary mapping in that it maps the complete set of $O(N)$ invariant degrees of freedom in the CFT, to the complete set of higher spin degrees of freedom. After restricting to a suitable code subspace we demonstrate that bilocal holography naturally reproduces the quantum error correcting properties of holograph…
