Molybdenum trioxide (MoO$_3$) in-plane anisotropy has increasingly attracted the attention of the scientific community in the last few years. Many of the observed in-plane anisotropic properties stem from the anisotropic refractive index and elastic constants of the material but a comprehensive analysis of these fundamental properties is still lacking. Here we employ Raman and micro-reflectance measurements, using polarized light, to determine the angular dependence of the refractive index of thin MoO$_3$ flakes and we study the directional dependence of the MoO$_3$ Young's modulus using the buckling metrology method. We found that MoO$_3$ displays one of the largest in-plane anisotropic mechanical properties reported for 2D materials so far.
Anisotropy is a general feature in materials. Strong anisotropy could lead to interesting physical properties and useful applications. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we predict a stable two-dimensional (2D) material---the monolayer MoOCl$_2$, and show that it possesses intriguing properties related to its high anisotropy. Monolayer MoOCl$_2$ can be readily exfoliated from the van der Waals layered bulk, which has already been synthesized. We show that a high in-plane anisotropy manifests in the structural, phononic, mechanical, electronic, and optical pr…

Recently, 2D few-layered As2S3 with superior chemical stability was successfully exfoliated in experiments. Howeve…
Boron nitride structures have excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. Based on state-of-art theoretical calculations, we propose a wide gap semiconducting BN crystal with a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb structure (Hp-BN), which is both mechanically and thermodynamically stable. Our calculated results show that Hp-BN has a higher bulk modulus and a smaller energy gap as compared to c-BN. Moreover, due to the unique bonding structure, Hp-BN exhibits anisotropic electronic and optical properties. It has great adsorption in the ultraviolet region, but it is highly transparent in the visible…
We study a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice gas model with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions in a staggered field, which describes the surface of stoichiometrically binary crystal. We calculate anisotropic step tension, step stiffness, and equilibrium island shape, by an extended random walk method. We apply the results to Si(111) 7$\times$7 reconstructed surface and high-temperature Si(111) 1$\times$1 surface. We also calculate inter-step interaction coefficient.
Atomic-scale investigation on mechanical behaviors is highly necessary to fully understand the fracture mechanics especially of brittle materials, which are determined by atomic-scale phenomena (e.g., lattice trapping). Here, exfoliated anisotropic rhenium disulfide (ReS2) flakes are used to investigate atomic-scale crack propagation depending on the propagation directions. While the conventional strain-stress curves exhibit a strong anisotropy depending on the cleavage direction of ReS2, but our experimental results show a reduced cleavage anisotropy due to the lattice reconstruction in [100]…
Phagraphene is a novel 2D carbon allotrope with interesting electronic properties which has been recently theoretically proposed. Phagraphene is similar to a defective graphene structure with an arrangement of pentagonal, heptagonal and hexagonal rings. Using the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics method, we found the thermal conductivity of phagraphene to be anisotropic, with room temperature values of $218 \pm 20$ W/m-K along the armchair direction and $285 \pm 29$…
It is known that compaction of granular matter can lead to anisotropic mechanical properties. Recent work has confirmed the link to pore space anisotropy, but the relation between compression, mechanical properties and material microstructure remains poorly understood and new diagnostic tools are needed. By studying the temporal and spatial characteristics of short optical pulses diffusively transmitted through compacted granular materials, we show that powder compaction can also give rise to strongly anisotropic diffusion of light. Investigating technologically important materials such as mic…

Charge transport in Rubrene single crystals under uniaxial mechanical strain is systematically investigated in the crystal's two in-plane transport directions both under tensile and compressive strain applied parallel or perpendicular to the current direction. The density of trap states remains unchanged. The field-effect mobility as a benchmark figures for intermolecular transport is found to increase with compressive strain and vice versa with a magnitude of -1.5 cm2/Vs per percent of strain independently of tranport direction. A very remarkable result is the mobility change when the crystal…
The response of a short DNA segment to bending is studied, taking into account the anisotropy in the bending rigidities caused by the double-helical structure. It is shown that the anisotropy introduces an effective nonlinear twist-bend coupling that can lead to the formation of kinks and modulations in the curvature and/or in the twist, depending on the values of the elastic constants and the imposed deflection angle. The typical wavelength for the modulations, or the distance between the neighboring kinks is found to be set by half of the DNA pitch.

Explicit expressions for inverse of Young's modulus E, inverse of shear modulus G, and Poisson's ratio for cubic media are considered. All these characteristics of elastic media depend on three components of the compliance tensor S, and on direction cosines of mutually perpendicular vectors m and n with fourfold symmetry axes. These characteristics are studied for all mechanically stable cubic materials for vectors n belonging to the irreducible body angle subtended by three cubic high symmetry directions [001], [111], and [110]. Shale, like many other sedimentary rocks, is typically heterogeneous, anisotropic, and is characterized by partial alignment of anisotropic clay minerals and naturally formed bedding planes. In this study, a micromechanical framework based on the Lattice Discrete Particle Model (LDPM) is formulated to capture these features. Material anisotropy is introduced through an approximated geometric description of shale internal structure, which includes representation of material property variation with orientation and explicit modeling of parallel lamination. The model is calibrated by carrying out …

Cr2Ge2Te6 is a van der Waals ferromagnet with a Curie temperature at 66 K. Here we report a swift change in the magnetic ground state upon application of small DC electric current, a giant yet anisotropic magnetoelectric effect, and a sharp, lattice-driven quantum switching manifested in the I-V characteristic of the bulk single-crystal Cr2Ge2Te6. At the heart of these observed phenomena is a newly uncovered, strongly anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling that enables strongly anisotropic responses of the lattice to application of electric current and/or magnetic field, thus the exotic phenomena…
Structural, electronic, ferroelectric, and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) BiN monolayer material with phosphorene-like structure are studied in terms of the density functional theory and modern Berry phase ferroelectric method. Both phonon spectra and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the BiN monolayer is a room-temperature stable 2D ferroelectric with polarization as large as 580 pC/m. Further studies show that the polarization in the BiN monolayer can be easily switched from [100] to [010] direction over the bridging saddle phase by applying a tensile [010] stress of 2…

Low mechanical loss materials are needed to further decrease thermal noise in upcoming gravitational wave detectors. We present an analysis of the contribution of Akhieser and thermoelastic damping on the experimental results of resonant mechanical loss measurements. The combination of both processes allows the fit of the experimental data of quartz in the low temperature region (10 K to 25 K). A fully anisotropic numerical calculation over a wide temperature range (10 K to 300 K) reveals, that thermoelastic damping is not a dominant noise source in bulk silicon samples. The anisotropic numeri…

We have investigated through fully atomistic reactive molecular dynamics and DFT simulations, the mechanical properties and fracture dynamics of novamene, a new 3D carbon allotrope structure recently proposed. Our results showed that novamene is an anisotropic structure with relation to tensile deformation. Although novamente shares some mechanical features with other carbon allotropes, it also exhibits distinct ones, such as, extensive structural reconstructions (self-healing effect). Novamene presents ultimate strength (~ 100 GPa) values lower than other carbon allotropes, but it has the hig…
We study the crushing strength of brittle materials whose internal structure (e.g., mineral particles or graining) presents a layered arrangement reminiscent of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Taking a discrete-element approach, we probe the failure strength of circular-shaped samples intended to reproduce specific mineral configurations. To do so, assemblies of cells, products of a modified Voronoi tessellation, are joined in mechanically-stable layerings using a bonding law. The cells' shape distribution allows us to set a level of inherent anisotropy to the material. Using a diametral po…

The mechanical properties of single-layer black phosphrous under uniaxial deformation are investigated using first-principles calculations. Both Young's modulus and the ultimate strain are found to be highly anisotropic and nonlinear as a result of its quasi-two-dimensional puckered structure. Specifically, the in-plane Young's modulus is 44.0 GPa in the direction perpendicular to the pucker, and 92.7 GPa in the parallel direction. The ultimate strain is 0.48 and 0.20 in the perpendicular and parallel directions, respectively.
Optical properties of nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS are studied using first-principles calculations. Frequency-independent optical conductivity is a fingerprint of the infrared optical response in ZrSiS. We find that this characteristic feature is robust with respect to uniaxial compressive strain of up to 10 GPa, yet with the flat region being narrowed with increasing strain. Upon uniaxial tensile stress of 2 GPa, the Fermi surface undergoes a Lifshitz transition accompanied by a weakening of the interband screening, which reduces the spectral weight of infrared excitations. We also show that th…
The biaxial van der Waals semiconductor $α$-phase molybdenum trioxide ($α$-MoO$_3$) has recently received significant attention due to its ability to support highly anisotropic phonon polaritons (PhPs) -infrared (IR) light coupled to lattice vibrations in polar materials-, offering an unprecedented platform for controlling the flow of energy at the nanoscale. However, to fully exploit the extraordinary IR response of this material, an accurate dielectric function is required. Here, we report the accurate IR dielectric function of $α$-MoO$_3$ by modelling far-field, polarized IR reflectance spe…
The biaxial mechanical properties constitute another remarkable advantage of graphene, but their evaluation has been overlooked in polymer nanocomposites. Herein, we provided an innovative and practical method to characterise biaxial reinforcement from graphene via swelling of elastomers, where graphene nanoplatelets were controlled to be oriented in-plane. The in-plane-aligned graphene imposed a biaxial constraining force to the elastomer during the swelling process that led to the anisotropic swelling behaviour of the bulk nanocomposites.
Despite their importance, chemical reactions confined in a low dimensional space are elusive and experimentally intractable. In this work, we report doubly anisotropic, in-plane and out-of-plane, oxidation reactions of two-dimensional crystals, by resolving interface-confined thermal oxidation of a single and multilayer MoS2 supported on silica substrates from their conventional surface reaction. Using optical second-harmonic generation spectroscopy of artificially stacked multilayers, we directly proved that crystallographically oriented triangular oxides (TOs) were formed in the bottommost l…
Closely packed quasi-hexagonal and quasi-tetragonal crystalline phase of C$_{60}$ molecules (named qHPC$_{60}$) was recently synthesized. Here, we used DFT simulations to investigate the electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of qHPC$_{60}$ monolayers. qHPC$_{60}$ has a moderate direct electronic bandgap, with anisotropic mechanical properties. Their elastic modulus ranges between 50 and 62 GPa. The results for optical properties suggest that qHPC$_{60}$ can act as UV collectors for photon energies until 5.5 eV since they present low reflectivity and refractive index greater than one. …
We have explored the mechanical, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of p-type half-Heusler compound BaAgP for the first time using density functional theory based calculations. The mechanical and dynamical stability of this compound is confirmed by studying the Born stability criteria and phonon dispersion curve, respectively. It is soft, ductile and elastically anisotropic. The atomic bonding along a-axis is stronger than that along c-axis. The calculated electronic structure reveals that the studied compound is an indirect band gap semiconductor. The analysis of charge density…

Acquired phonon dispersions and ab-initio molecular dynamics results confirm the stability of studied nanomembranes. Observation of relatively weak interlayer interactions suggests that the exfoliation techniques can be potentially employed to fabricate nanomembranes from their bulk counterparts. The studied nanosheets were found to show highly anisotropic…
We examine how disordering joint position influences the linear elastic behavior of lattice materials via numerical simulations in two-dimensional beam networks. Three distinct initial crystalline geometries are selected as representative of mechanically isotropic materials low connectivity, mechanically isotropic materials with high connectivity, and mechanically anisotropic materials with intermediate connectivity. Introducing disorder generates spatial fluctuations in the elasticity tensor at the local (joint) scale. Proper coarse-graining reveals a well-defined continuum-level scale elasti…

Emerging multi-material 3D printing techniques have paved the way for the rational design of metamaterials with not only complex geometries but also arbitrary distributions of multiple materials within those geometries. Varying the spatial distribution of multiple materials gives rise to many interesting and potentially unique combinations of anisotropic elastic properties. While the availability of a design approach to cover a large portion of all possible combinations of elastic properties is interesting in itself, it is even more important to find the extremely rare designs that lead to hig…
Anchorage-dependent cells collect information on the mechanical properties of the environment through their contractile machineries and use this information to position and orient themselves. Since the probing process is anisotropic, cellular force patterns during active mechanosensing can be modelled as anisotropic force contraction dipoles. Their build-up depends on the mechanical properties of the environment, including elastic rigidity and prestrain. In a finite sized sample, it also depends on sample geometry and boundary conditions through image strain fields. We discuss the interactions…
