The chemical pathways linking the small organic molecules commonly observed in molecular clouds to the large, complex, polycyclic species long-suspected to be carriers of the ubiquitous unidentified infrared emission bands remain unclear. To investigate whether the formation of mono- and poly-cyclic molecules observed in cold cores could form via the bottom-up reaction of ubiquitous carbon-chain species with, e.g. atomic hydrogen, a search is made for possible intermediates in data taken as part of the GOTHAM (GBT Observations of TMC-1 Hunting for Aromatic Molecules) project. Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Source Models were run to obtain column densities and excitation temperatures. Astrochemical models were run to examine possible formation routes, including a novel grain-surface pathway involving the hydrogenation of C$_6$N and HC$_6$N, as well as purely gas-phase reactions between C$_3$N and both propyne (CH$_3$CCH) and allene (CH$_2$CCH$_2$), as well as via the reaction CN + H$_2$CCCHCCH. We report the first detection of cyanoacetyleneallene (H$_2$CCCHC$_3$N) in space toward the TMC-1 cold cloud using the Robert C. Byrd 100 m Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Cyanoacetyleneallene may represent an intermediate between less-saturated carbon-chains, such as the cyanopolyynes, that are characteristic of cold cores and the more recently-discovered cyclic species like cyanocyclopentadiene. Results from our models show that the gas-phase allene-based formation route in particular produces abundances of H$_2$CCCHC$_3$N that match the column density of $2\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ obtained from the MCMC Source Model, and that the grain-surface route yields large abundances on ices that could potentially be important as precursors for cyclic molecules.
Since the developpment of astronephography, we know that the Sun is about to exit the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). To date, because of its rare absorption signatures and the paucity of suitable neighbour targets, the LIC interface has proved to be elusive to extensive investigations. Comparing the spatial distribution of Si III detections found in the litterature along with 3 new sigtlines, I show that most detections seem to arise from a cone whose axis is parallel to the LIC heliocentric velocity vector. I interpret this result as an evidence that the heliosphere is actually interacting w…
The previous decade saw the discovery of the first four known interstellar objects due to advances in astronomical viewing equipment. Future sky surveys with greater sensitivity will allow for more frequent detections of such objects, including increasingly small objects. We consider the capabilities of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory to detect interstellar objects of small sizes during its period of operation over the next decade. We use LSST's detection capabilities and simulate populations of interstellar objects in the range of 1-50m in diameter …
Emission of fullerenes in their infrared vibrational bands has been detected in space near hot stars. The proposed attribution of the diffuse interstellar bands at 9577 and 9632 Å to electronic transitions of the buckminsterfullerene cation (i.e. C$_{60}^+$ ) was recently supported by new laboratory data, confirming the presence of this species in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). In this letter, we present the detection, also in the diffuse ISM, of the 17.4 and 18.9 $μ$m emission bands commonly attributed to vibrational bands of neutral C$_{60}$. According to classical models that comput…
We present an overview of the GOTHAM (GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting Aromatic Molecules) Large Program on the Green Bank Telescope. This and a related program were launched to explore the depth and breadth of aromatic chemistry in the interstellar medium at the earliest stages of star formation, following our earlier detection of benzonitrile ($c$-C$_6$H$_5$CN) in TMC-1. In this work, details of the observations, use of archival data, and data reduction strategies are provided. Using these observations, the interstellar detection of propargyl cyanide (HCCCH$_2$CN) is described, as well as …
We present the first detection of ($Z$)-1,2-ethenediol, (CHOH)$_2$, the enol form of glycolaldehyde, in the interstellar medium towards the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud located in the Galactic Center. We have derived a column density of (1.8$\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, which translates into a molecular abundance with respect to molecular hydrogen of 1.3$\times$10$^{-10}$. The abundance ratio between glycolaldehyde and ($Z$)-1,2-ethenediol is $\sim$5.2. We discuss several viable formation routes through chemical reactions from precursors such as HCO, H$_2$CO, CHOH or CH$_2$CHOH. We al…
Laboratory rotational spectra of cyanocyclohexane and its siblings (1- and 4-cyanocyclohexene) using a compact CP-FTMW spectrometer for interstellar detection
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles are thought to be widespread throughout the Universe, because these classes of molecules are probably responsible for the unidentified infrared bands, a set of emission features seen in numerous Galactic and extragalactic sources. Despite their expected ubiquity, astronomical identification of specific aromatic molecules has proven elusive. We present the discovery of benzonitrile ($c$-C$_6$H$_5$CN), one of the simplest nitrogen-bearing aromatic molecules, in the interstellar medium. We observed hyperfine-resolved t…
Ubiquitous unidentified infrared emission bands are seen in many astronomical sources. Although these bands are widely, if not unanimously, attributed to the collective emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, no single species from this class has been detected in space. We present the discovery of two -CN functionalized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1- and 2-cyanonaphthalene, in the interstellar medium aided by spectral matched filtering. Using radio observations with the Green Bank Telescope, we observe both bi-cyclic ring molecules in the molecular cloud TMC-1. We discuss potenti…
We report the detection of interstellar methoxymethanol (CH$_3$OCH$_2$OH) in ALMA Bands 6 and 7 toward the MM1 core in the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I at ~0.1" - 1" spatial resolution. A column density of 4(2) x $10^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$ at $T_{ex}$ = 200 K is derived toward MM1, ~34 times less abundant than methanol (CH$_3$OH), and significantly higher than predicted by astrochemical models. Probable formation and destruction pathways are discussed, primarily through the reaction of the CH$_3$OH photodissociation products, the methoxy (CH$_3$O) and hydroxymethyl (CH$_2$OH) radicals. Fin…
We report on the first detection of C3N- and C5N- towards the cold dark core TMC-1 in the Taurus region, using the Yebes 40 m telescope. The observed C3N/C3N- and C5N/C5N- abundance ratios are 140 and 2, respectively; that is similar to those found in the circumstellar envelope of the carbon-rich star IRC+10216. Although the formation mechanisms for the neutrals are different in interstellar (ion-neutral reactions) and circumstellar clouds (photodissociation and radical-neutral reactions), the similarity of the C3N/C3N- and C5N/C5N- abundance ratios strongly suggests a common chemical path for…
We report an astronomical detection of HC$_4$NC for the first time in the interstellar medium with the Green Bank Telescope toward the TMC-1 molecular cloud with a minimum significance of $10.5 σ$. The total column density and excitation temperature of HC$_4$NC are determined to be $3.29^{+8.60}_{-1.20}\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $6.7^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$ K, respectively, using the MCMC analysis. In addition to HC$_4$NC, HCCNC is distinctly detected whereas no clear detection of HC$_6$NC is made. We propose that the dissociative recombination of the protonated cyanopolyyne, HC$_5$NH$^+$, and the p…
It is a fact that interstellar formation processes are thermodynamically affected. Based on this, the seven heterocycles; imidazole, pyridine, pyrimidine, pyrrole, quinoline, isoquinoline and furan that have been searched for from different astronomical sources with only upper limits of their column density determined without any successful detection remain the best candidates for astronomical observation with respect to their isomers. These molecules are believed to be formed on the surface of the interstellar dust grains and as such, they are susceptible to interstellar hydrogen bonding. In …
To date, 204 individual molecular species, comprised of 16 different elements, have been detected in the interstellar and circumstellar medium by astronomical observations. These molecules range in size from two atoms to seventy, and have been detected across the electromagnetic spectrum from cm-wavelengths to the ultraviolet. This census presents a summary of the first detection of each molecular species, including the observational facility, wavelength range, transitions, and enabling laboratory spectroscopic work, as well as listing tentative and disputed detections. Tables of molecules det…
Because of their importance in biological systems, in our understanding of the solar system and in other applications, seven heterocycles; furan, imidazole, pyridine, pyrimidine, pyrrole, quinoline and isoquinoline have been astronomically searched for in different molecular clouds with only the upper limits in the range of 4*1012 to 2.8*1021cm-2 determined for their column densities in all the cases without any successful detection. Bothered by their unsuccessful detection, the energy, stability and abundance (ESA) relationship existing among interstellar molecules has been applied to examine…
Buckminsterfullerene, C60 , is the largest molecule observed to date in interstellar and circumstellar environments. The mechanism of formation of this molecule is actively debated. Despite targeted searches in primitive carbonaceous chondrites, no unambiguous detection of C60 in a meteorite has been reported to date. Here we report the first firm detection of fullerenes, from C30 to at least C100 , in the Almahata Sitta (AhS) polymict ureilite meteorite. This detection was achieved using highly sensitive laser desorption laser ionization mass spectrometry. Fullerenes have been unambiguously d…
The detection of a branched alkyl molecule in the high-mass star forming protocluster Sgr B2(N) permitted by the advent of ALMA revealed a new dimension of interstellar chemistry. Astrochemical simulations subsequently predicted that beyond a certain degree of molecular complexity, branched molecules could even dominate over their straight-chain isomers. More generally, we aim at probing further the presence in the ISM of complex organic molecules with the capacity to exhibit both a normal and iso form, via the attachment of a functional group to either a primary or secondary carbon atom. We u…
It is thought that dicyanopolyynes could be potentially abundant interstellar molecules, although their lack of dipole moment makes it impossible to detect them through radioastronomical techniques. Recently, the simplest member of this chemical family, cyanogen (NCCN), was indirectly probed for the first time in interstellar space through the detection of its protonated form toward the dense clouds L483 and TMC-1. Here we present a second firm evidence of the presence of NCCN in interstellar space, namely the detection of the metastable and polar isomer isocyanogen (CNCN). This species has be…
We present the first Chandra detection of a single X-ray cavity within the interstellar medium of the small Fanaroff-Riley type I (FRI) radio galaxy NGC 5141. The X-ray surface brightness depression, located $\approx 4$ kpc away from the galaxy center, is projected on the northern radio lobe, which is completely contained within the galaxy. The thermal gas surrounding the cavity, which extends to $\approx$ 20 kpc, has a bolometric X-ray luminosity (0.1 - 100 keV) of L${_X}\approx2\times10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a temperature of $kT\approx0.8$ keV. We calculated the total energy (E$_{cav} = 4PV…
We report the detection of the carbon-chain radical HC$_5$O for the first time in the interstellar medium toward the dark cloud TMC-1 using the 100 m Green Bank Telescope. We observe four hyperfine components of this radical in the $J = 17/2 \rightarrow 15/2$ rotational transition that originates from the $^2Π_{1/2}$ fine structure level of its ground state, and calculate an abundance of $n/n_{H_2}$ = $1.7\times 10^{-10}$, assuming an excitation temperature of $T_{ex} = 7$~K. No indication of HC$_3$O, HC$_4$O, HC$_6$O, is found in these or archival observations of the source, while we report t…
We present the first identification in interstellar space of the thioformyl radical (HCS) and its metastable isomer HSC. These species were detected toward the molecular cloud L483 thanks to observations carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope in the 3 mm band. We derive beam-averaged column densities of 7e12 cm-2 for HCS and 1.8e11 cm-2 for HSC, which translate to fractional abundances relative to H2 of 2e-10 and 6e-12, respectively. Although the amount of sulfur locked by these radicals is low, their detection allows to put interesting constraints on the chemistry of sulfur in dark clouds. I…
The detection of benzonitrile (C6H5CN), 1- and 2-cyano-naphthalene (C10H7CN) in the cold, dark molecular cloud TMC-1 at centimetre (cm) wavelengths has opened up prospects for the detection of other N- and CN-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this light, the pure rotational spectra of N-pyrene (C15H9N), CN-pyrene (C15H9CN), N-coronene (C23H11N) and CN-coronene (C23H11CN) are reported here for the first time. The B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory, in the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, achieves the best performance for calculating the spectroscopic parameters…
The sightline toward the luminous blue hypergiant Cyg OB2-12 is widely used in studying interstellar dust on account of its large extinction ($A_V \simeq 10$ mag) and the fact that this extinction appears to be dominated by dust typical of the diffuse interstellar medium. We present a new analysis of archival ISO-SWS and Spitzer IRS observations of Cyg OB2-12 using a model of the emission from the star and its stellar wind to determine the total extinction $A_λ$ from 2.4--37 $μ$m. In addition to the prominent 9.7 and 18 $μ$m silicate features, we robustly detect absorption features associated …
Urea, NH2C(O)NH2, is a molecule of great importance in organic chemistry and biology. Two searches for urea in the interstellar medium were reported in the past, but neither were conclusive. We want to take advantage of the increased sensitivity and angular resolution provided by ALMA to search for urea toward the hot cores embedded in the high-mass star forming region Sgr B2(N). We use the new spectral line survey ReMoCA performed toward Sgr B2(N) with ALMA in its observing cycle 4. The spectra are analyzed under the LTE approximation. We construct a full synthetic spectrum that includes all …
We report the first detection of C$_2$ $A^1Π_u$--$X^1Σ_g^+$ (0,0) and CN $A^2Π_u$--$X^2Σ^+$ (0,0) absorption bands in the interstellar medium. The detection was made using the near-infrared (0.91--1.35 $μ$m) high-resolution ($R=20,000$ and 68,000) spectra of Cygnus OB2 No.\,12 collected with the WINERED spectrograph mounted on the 1.3 m Araki telescope. The $A$--$X$ (1,0) bands of C$_2$ and CN were detected simultaneously. These near-infrared bands have larger oscillator strengths, compared with the $A$--$X$ (2,0) bands of C$_2$ and CN in the optical. In the spectrum of the C$_2$ (0,0) band wi…
We report here the first detection in the interstellar medium of the cyanomidyl radical (HNCN). Using the Yebes 40m and the IRAM 30m telescopes, we have targeted the doublets of the $N$=2$-$1, 4$-$3, 5$-$4, 6$-$5, and 7$-$6 transitions of HNCN toward the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027. We have detected three unblended lines of HNCN, these are the $N$=6$-$5 doublet and one line of the $N$=4$-$3 transition. Additionally we present one line of the $N$=5$-$4 transition partially blended with emission from other species. The Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium best fit to the data gives a molecular abun…

This census presents a summary of the first detection of each molecular species, including the observational facility, wavelength range, transitions, and enabling laboratory spectroscopic work, as well as listing tentative and disputed detections. In the interstellar medium, the amide-type molecules play an important role in the formation of the prebiotic molecules in the hot molecular cores or high-mass star formation regions. The complex amide-related molecule cyanamide (NH$_{2}$CN) is known as one of the rare interstellar molecule which has played a major role in the formation of urea (NH$_{2}$CONH$_{2}$). In this article, we presented the detection of the emission lines of cyanamide (NH$_{2}$CN) towards the hot molecular core G10.47+0.03 between the frequency range 158.49$-$160.11 GHz using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter…
We present the first detection of gas phase S2H in the Horsehead, a moderately UV-irradiated nebula. This confirms the presence of doubly sulfuretted species in the interstellar medium and opens a new challenge for sulfur chemistry. The observed S2H abundance is ~5x10$^{-11}$, only a factor 4-6 lower than that of the widespread H2S molecule. H2S and S2H are efficiently formed on the UV-irradiated icy grain mantles. We performed ice irradiation experiments to determine the H2S and S2H photodesorption yields. The obtained values are ~1.2x10$^{-3}$ and <1x10$^{-5}$ molecules per incident photon f…
Due to recent advances in laboratory spectroscopy, the first optical detection of a very large molecule has been claimed in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM): C60+ (ionized Buckminsterfullerene). Confirming the presence of this molecule would have significant implications regarding the carbon budget and chemical complexity of the ISM. Here we present results from a new method for ultra-high signal-to-noise (S/N) spectroscopy of background stars in the near infrared (at wavelengths 0.9-1 micron), using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) in a previously untested `STIS sca…

We report the first detection of HC$_{5}$$^{15}$N with the $J=9-8$ rotational line from the cyanopolyyne peak in Taurus Molecular Cloud-1 (TMC-1 CP) using the 45-m radio telescope of the Nobeyama Radio Observatory. The column density of HC$_{5}$$^{15}$N is derived to be (1.9 +- 0.5)*$10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ (1 sigma). We apply the double isotope method to derive the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratios of HC$_{5}$N and HC$_{3}$N in TMC-1 CP. The $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratios are calculated to be 344 +- 53 and 257 +- 54 for HC$_{5}$N and HC$_{3}$N, respectively. The $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratio of HC$_{5}$N is lower than…
Nitrogen oxides are thought to play a significant role as a nitrogen reservoir and to potentially participate in the formation of more complex species. Until now, only NO, N$_2$O and HNO have been detected in the interstellar medium. We report the first interstellar detection of nitrous acid (HONO). Twelve lines were identified towards component B of the low-mass protostellar binary IRAS~16293--2422 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, at the position where NO and N$_2$O have previously been seen. A local thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to derive the column density (…
We present the first mid-infrared (MIR) detections of HNC and H13CN in the interstellar medium, and numerous, resolved HCN rovibrational transitions. Our observations span 12.8 to 22.9 micron towards the hot core Orion IRc2, obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Exceptional, ~5 km/s, resolution distinguishes individual rovibrational transitions of the HNC and HCN P, Q, and R branches; and the H13CN R branch. This allows direct measurement of the species' excitation temperatures, column densities, and relative a…
The simplest cyanobenzene, benzonitrile (c-C6H5CN) have been possibly detected toward the cyanopolyyne peak in TMC-1. We used the results of the 8.8 -- 50 GHz spectral survey of TMC-1 by Kaifu et al. (2004) and stacked the lines of benzonitrile that fall within the range of this survey. The obtained spectrum strongly suggests the presence of this molecule. Benzonitrile is a derivative of the simplest aromatic hydrocarbon benzene. Aromatic hydrocarbons are thought to be ubiquitous in the ISM, but it is difficult to study them in molecular cloud interiors, since they are nonpolar and have no all…
Theories of a pre-RNA world suggest that glycolonitrile (HOCH$_2$CN) is a key species in the process of ribonucleotide assembly, which is considered as a molecular precursor of nucleic acids. In this Letter, we report the first detection of this pre-biotic molecule in the interstellar medium (ISM) by using ALMA data obtained at frequencies between 86.5$\,$GHz and 266.5$\,$GHz toward the Solar-type protostar IRAS16293-2422 B. A total of 15 unblended transitions of HOCH$_2$CN were identified. Our analysis indicates the presence of a cold (T$\rm _{ex}$=24$\pm$8$\,$K) and a warm (T$\rm _{ex}$=158$…

Deuterium fractionation processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) have been shown to be highly efficient in the family of nitrogen hydrides. To date, observations were limited to ammonia (NH$_2$D, NHD$_2$, ND$_3$) and imidogen radical (ND) isotopologues. We want to explore the high frequency windows offered by the \emph{Herschel Space Observatory} to search for deuterated forms of amidogen radical NH$_2$ and to compare the observations against the predictions of our comprehensive gas-grain chemical model. Making use of the new molecular spectroscopy data recently obtained at high frequencies …
