The study of inner and cyclic functions in $\ell^p_A$ spaces requires a better understanding of the zeros of the so-called optimal polynomial approximants.
We determine that a point of the complex plane is the zero of an optimal polynomial approximant for some element of $\ell^p_A$ if and only if it lies outside of a closed disk (centered at the origin) of a particular radius which depends on the value of $p$. We find the value of this radius for $p\neq 2$. In addition, for each positive integer $d$ there is a polynomial $f_d$ of degree at most $d$ that minimizes the modulus of the root of its optimal linear polynomial approximant. We develop a method for finding these extremal functions $f_d$ and discuss their properties. The method involves the Lagrange multiplier method and a resulting dynamical system.
We discuss the notion of optimal polynomial approximants in multivariable reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. In particular, we analyze difficulties that arise in the multivariable case which are not present in one variable, for example, a more complicated relationship between optimal approximants and orthogonal polynomials in weighted spaces. Weakly inner functions, whose optimal approximants are all constant, provide extreme cases where nontrivial orthogonal polynomials cannot be recovered from the optimal approximants. Concrete examples are presented to illustrate the general theory and are …
We obtain closed expressions for weighted orthogonal polynomials and optimal approximants associated with the function $f(z)=1-\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(z_1+z_2)$ and a scale of Hilbert function spaces in the unit $2$-ball having reproducing kernel $(1-\langle z,w\rangle)^{-γ}$, $γ>0$. Our arguments are elementary but do not rely on reduction to the one-dimensional case.
We study the structure of the zeros of optimal polynomial approximants to reciprocals of functions in Hilbert spaces of analytic functions in the unit disk. In many instances, we find the minimum possible modulus of occurring zeros via a nonlinear extremal problem associated with norms of Jacobi matrices. We examine global properties of these zeros and prove Jentzsch-type theorems describing where they accumulate. As a consequence, we obtain detailed information regarding zeros of reproducing kernels in weighted spaces of analytic functions.
In the last few years, the notion of optimal polynomial approximant has appeared in the mathematics literature in connection with Hilbert spaces of analytic functions of one or more variables. In the 70s, researchers in engineering and applied mathematics introduced least-squares inverses in the context of digital filters in signal processing. It turns out that in the Hardy space $H^2$ these objects are identical. This paper is a survey of known results about optimal polynomial approximants. In particular, we will examine their connections with orthogonal polynomials and reproducing kernels in…
In this paper, we provide an efficient method for computing the Taylor coefficients of $1-p_n f$, where $p_n$ denotes the optimal polynomial approximant of degree $n$ to $1/f$ in a Hilbert space $H^2_ω$ of analytic functions over the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$, and $f$ is a polynomial of degree $d$ with $d$ simple zeros. As a consequence, we show that in many of the spaces $H^2_ω$, the sequence $\{1-p_nf\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is uniformly bounded on the closed unit disc and, if $f$ has no zeros inside $\mathbb{D}$, the sequence $\{1-p_nf \}$ converges uniformly to 0 on compact subsets of the comple…
In the paper, we propose two new conjectures about the convergence of Hermite Approximants of multivalued analytic functions of Laguerre class ${\mathscr L}$. The conjectures are based in part on the numerical experiments, made recently by the authors in [26] and [27].
We discuss the concept of inner function in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with an orthogonal basis of monomials and examine connections between inner functions and optimal polynomial approximants to $1/f$, where $f$ is a function in the space. We revisit some classical examples from this perspective, and show how a construction of Shapiro and Shields can be modified to produce inner functions.
We present an account of different problems that arise in relation with cyclicity problems in Dirichlet-type spaces, in particular with polynomials $p$ that minimize the norm $\|pf-1\|$.
Let $E$ be a closed subset of the unit circle of measure zero. Recently, Beise and Müller showed the existence of a function in the Hardy space $H^2$ for which the partial sums of its Taylor series approximate any continuous function on $E$. In this paper, we establish an analogue of this result in a non-linear setting where we consider optimal polynomial approximants of reciprocals of functions in $H^2$ instead of Taylor polynomials. The proof uses a new result on simultaneous zero-free approximation of independent interest. Our results extend to Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathcal{D}_α$ for $α\i…
We study connections between orthogonal polynomials, reproducing kernel functions, and polynomials $p$ minimizing Dirichlet-type norms $\|pf-1\|_α$ for a given function $f$. For $α\in [0,1]$ (which includes the Hardy and Dirichlet spaces of the disk) and general $f$, we show that such extremal polynomials are non-vanishing in the closed unit disk. For negative $α$, the weighted Bergman space case, the extremal polynomials are non-vanishing on a disk of strictly smaller radius, and zeros can move inside the unit disk. We also explain how $\mathrm{dist}_{D_α}(1,f\cdot \mathcal{P}_n)$, where $\ma…
Over the past several years, optimal polynomial approximants (OPAs) have been studied in many different function spaces. In these settings, numerous papers have been devoted to studying the properties of their zeros. In this paper, we introduce the notion of optimal polynomial approximant in the space $L^p$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We begin our treatment by showing existence and uniqueness for $1<p<\infty$. For the extreme cases of $p=1$ and $p=\infty$, we show that uniqueness does not necessarily hold. We continue our development by elaborating on the special case of $L^2$. Here, we create a tes…
The present paper deals with the convergence properties of multi-level Hermite-Padé approximants for a class of meromorphic functions given by rational perturbations with real coefficients of a Nikishin system of functions, and study the zero location of the corresponding multiple orthogonal polynomials.
Starting from the orthogonal polynomial expansion of a function $F$ corresponding to a finite positive Borel measure with infinite compact support, we study the asymptotic behavior of certain associated rational functions (Padé-orthogonal approximants). We obtain both direct and inverse results relating the convergence of the poles of the approximants and the singularities of $F.$ Thereby, we obtain analogues of the theorems of E. Fabry, R. de Montessus de Ballore, V.I. Buslaev, and S.P. Suetin.
We strengthen the classical approximation theorems of Weierstrass, Runge and Mergelyan by showing the polynomial and rational approximants can be taken to have a simple geometric structure. In particular, when approximating a function $f$ on a compact set $K$, the critical points of our approximants may be taken to lie in any given domain containing $K$, and all the critical values in any given neighborhood of the polynomially convex hull of $f(K)$.
The theory of universal Taylor series can be extended to the case of Padé approximants where the universal approximation is not realized by polynomials any more, but by rational functions, namely the Padé approximants of some power series. We present the first generic result in this direction, for Padé approximants corresponding to Taylor developments of holomorphic functions in simply connected domains. The universal approximation is required only on compact sets $K$ which lie outside the domain of definition and have connected complement. If the sets $K$ are additionally disjoint from the bo…
For a function $f$ that is piecewise analytic on a quasi-smooth arc $\mathcal{L}$ and any $0<σ<1$ we construct a sequence of "near-best" polynomials that converge at a rate $e^{-n^σ}$ at each point of analyticity of $f$ and are close to the best polynomial approximants on the whole $\mathcal{L}$. Also we give examples of quasi-smooth arcs for which convergence of "near-best" approximants at points of analiticity of $f$ is geometric, i.e. has a rate $e^{-cn}$ with some $c>0$.
Let $f$ be a power series with positive radius of convergence. In the present paper, we study the phenomenon of overconvergence of sequences of classical Pade' approximants pi{n,m_n} associated with f, where m(n)<=m(n+1)<=m(n) and m(n) = o(n/\log n), resp. m(n) = 0(n) as n is going to infiity. We extend classical results by J. Hadamard and A. A. Ostrowski related to overconvergent Taylor polynomials, as well as results by G. Lo'pez Lagomasino and A. Ferna'ndes Infante concerning overconvergent subsequences of a fixed row of the Pade' table.
In previous works, an approach to the study of cyclic functions in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces has been presented, based on the study of so called \emph{optimal polynomial approximants}. In the present article, we extend such approach to the (non-Hilbert) case of spaces of analytic functions whose Taylor coefficients are in $\ell^p(ω)$, for some weight $ω$. When $ω=\{(k+1)^α\}_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$, for a fixed $α\in \mathbb{R}$, we derive a characterization of the cyclicity of polynomial functions and, when $1<p<\infty$, we obtain sharp rates of convergence of the optimal norms.
Given a system of functions $\textup{\textbf{F}}=(F_1,\ldots,F_d),$ analytic on a neighborhood of some compact subset $E$ of the complex plane with simply connected complement, we define a sequence of vector rational functions with common denominator in terms of the orthogonal expansions of the components $F_k, k=1,\ldots,d,$ with respect to a sequence of orthonormal polynomials associated with a measure $μ$ whose support is contained in $E$. Such sequences of vector rational functions resemble row sequences of type II Hermite-Padé approximants. Under appropriate assumptions on $μ,$ we give ne…
Given a vector function ${\bf F}=(F_1,\ldots,F_d),$ analytic on a neighborhood of some compact subset $E$ of the complex plane with simply connected complement, we define a sequence of vector rational functions with common denominator in terms of the expansions of the components $F_k, k=1,\ldots,d,$ with respect to the sequence of Faber polynomials associated with $E$. Such sequences of vector rational functions are analogous to row sequences of type II Hermite-Padé approximation. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence with geometric rate of the common denominators of …
We obtain strong and uniform asymptotics in every domain of the complex plane for the scaled polynomials $a (3nz)$, $b (3nz)$, and $c (3nz)$ where $a$, $b$, and $c$ are the type II Hermite-Padé approximants to the exponential function of respective degrees $2n+2$, $2n$ and $2n$, defined by $a (z)e^{-z}-b (z)=Ø(z^{3n+2})$ and $a (z)e^{z}-c (z)=Ø(z^{3n+2})$ as $z\to 0$. Our analysis relies on a characterization of these polynomials in terms of a $3\times 3$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem which, as a consequence of the famous Mahler relations, corresponds by a simple transformation to a similar R…
In the study of the cyclicity of a function $f$ in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces an important role is played by sequences of polynomials $\{p_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ called \emph{optimal polynomial approximants} (o.p.a.). For many such spaces and when the functions $f$ generating those o.p.a. are polynomials without zeros inside the disk but with some zeros on its boundary, we find that the weakly asympotic distribution of the zeros of $1-p_nf$ is the uniform measure on the unit circle.
We discuss approximation of extremal functions by polynomials in the weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_α$ where $-1 < α< 0$ and $-1 < α< p-2$. We obtain bounds on how close the approximation is to the true extremal function in the $A^p_α$ and uniform norms. We also discuss several results on the relation between the Bergman modulus of continuity of a function and how quickly its best polynomial approximants converge to it.
We discuss the relation between the linear Tschebyshev-Padé approximations to analytic function $f$ and the diagonal type I Hermite-Padé polynomials for the tuple of functions $[1,f_1,f_2]$ where the pair of functions $f_1,f_2$ forms certain Nikishin system. An approach is proposed of how to extend the seminal Stahl's Theory for Padé approximations for multivalued analytic functions to the Tschebyshev-Padé approximations. The approach is based on the relation between Tschebyshev-Padé approximations and Hermite-Padé polynomials and also on a connection of Hermite-Padé polynomials and multipoint…
The paper has two relatively distinct but connected goals; the first is to define the notion of Padé\ approximation of Weyl-Stiltjes transforms on an arbitrary compact Riemann surface of higher genus. The data consists of a contour in the Riemann surface and a measure on it, together with the additional datum of a local coordinate near a point and a divisor of degree $g$. The denominators of the resulting Padé--like approximation also satisfy an orthogonality relation and are sections of appropriate line bundles. A Riemann--Hilbert problem for a square matrix of rank two is shown to characteri…
Given a complex polynomial $p(z)$ of degree $n$ and an ellipse, we find an algorithm of determining the number of zeros of $p$ in the interior and exterior of the ellipse. Our results generalize the previous results of Pták and Young about the circles.
The discrete Chebyshev polynomials $t_n(x,N)$ are orthogonal with respect to a distribution, which is a step function with jumps one unit at the points $x=0,1,\cdots, N-1$, $N$ being a fixed positive integer. By using a double integral representation, we have recently obtained asymptotic expansions for $t_{n}(aN,N+1)$ in the double scaling limit, namely, $N\rightarrow\infty$ and $n/N\rightarrow b$, where $b\in (0,1)$ and $a\in(-\infty,\infty)$; see [Studies in Appl. Math. \textbf{128} (2012), 337-384]. In the present paper, we continue to investigate the behaviour of these polynomials when the…
