We review the most recent RANSAC-like hypothesize-and-verify robust estimators. The best performing ones are combined to create a state-of-the-art version of the Universal Sample Consensus (USAC) algorithm. A recent objective is to implement a modular and optimized framework, making future RANSAC modules easy to be included. The proposed method, USACv20, is tested on eight publicly available real-world datasets, estimating homographies, fundamental and essential matrices. On average, USACv20 leads to the most geometrically accurate models and it is the fastest in comparison to the state-of-the-art robust estimators. All reported properties improved performance of original USAC algorithm significantly. The pipeline will be made available after publication.

Estimating homography from an image pair is a fundamental problem in image alignment. Unsupervised learning methods have received increasing attention in this field due to their promising performance and label-free training. However, existing methods do not explicitly consider the problem of plane-induced parallax, which will make the predicted homography compromised on multiple planes. In this work, we propose a novel method HomoGAN to guide unsupervised homography estimation to focus on the dominant plane. First, a multi-scale transformer network is designed to predict homography from the fe…

Many real-world video sequences cannot be conveniently categorized as general or degenerate; in such cases, imposing a false dichotomy in using the fundamental matrix or homography model for motion segmentation on video sequences would lead to difficulty. Even when we are confronted with a general scene-motion, the fundamental matrix approach as a model for motion segmentation still suffers from several defects, which we discuss in this paper. The full potential of the fundamental matrix approach could only be realized if we judiciously harness information from the simpler homography model. Fr…

A new algorithm is proposed to accelerate RANSAC model quality calculations. The method is based on partitioning the joint correspondence space, e.g., 2D-2D point correspondences, into a pair of regular grids. The grid cells are mapped by minimal sample models, estimated within RANSAC, to reject correspondences that are inconsistent with the model parameters early. The proposed technique is general. It works with arbitrary transformations even if a point is mapped to a point set, e.g., as a fundamental matrix maps to epipolar lines. The method is tested on thousands of image pairs from publicl…

We present new methods for simultaneously estimating camera geometry and time shift from video sequences from multiple unsynchronized cameras. Algorithms for simultaneous computation of a fundamental matrix or a homography with unknown time shift between images are developed. Our methods use minimal correspondence sets (eight for fundamental matrix and four and a half for homography) and therefore are suitable for robust estimation using RANSAC. Furthermore, we present an iterative algorithm that extends the applicability on sequences which are significantly unsynchronized, finding the correct…

We present a novel approach for RANSAC-based computation of the fundamental matrix based on epipolar homography decomposition. We analyze the geometrical meaning of the decomposition-based representation and show that it directly induces a consecutive sampling strategy of two independent sets of correspondences. We show that our method guarantees a minimal number of evaluated hypotheses with respect to current minimal approaches, on the condition that there are four correspondences on an image line. We validate our approach on real-world image pairs, providing fast and accurate results.

We aim at estimating the fundamental matrix in two views from five correspondences of rotation invariant features obtained by e.g.\ the SIFT detector. The proposed minimal solver first estimates a homography from three correspondences assuming that they are co-planar and exploiting their rotational components. Then the fundamental matrix is obtained from the homography and two additional point pairs in general position. The proposed approach, combined with robust estimators like Graph-Cut RANSAC, is superior to other state-of-the-art algorithms both in terms of accuracy and number of iteration…

Local features e.g. SIFT and its affine and learned variants provide region-to-region rather than point-to-point correspondences. This has recently been exploited to create new minimal solvers for classical problems such as homography, essential and fundamental matrix estimation. The main advantage of such solvers is that their sample size is smaller, e.g., only two instead of four matches are required to estimate a homography. Works proposing such solvers often claim a significant improvement in run-time thanks to fewer RANSAC iterations. We show that this argument is not valid in practice if…

We present a novel solution to the camera pose estimation problem, where rotation and translation of a camera between two views are estimated from matched feature points in the images. The camera pose estimation problem is traditionally solved via algorithms that are based on the essential matrix or the Euclidean homography. With six or more feature points in general positions in the space, essential matrix based algorithms can recover a unique solution. However, such algorithms fail when points are on critical surfaces (e.g., coplanar points) and homography should be used instead. By formulat…

Initialization is essential to monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problems. This paper focuses on a novel initialization method for monocular SLAM based on planar features. The algorithm starts by homography estimation in a sliding window. It then proceeds to a global plane optimization (GPO) to obtain camera poses and the plane normal. 3D points can be recovered using planar constraints without triangulation. The proposed method fully exploits the plane information from multiple frames and avoids the ambiguities in homography decomposition. We validate our algorithm on the…

A novel method for robust estimation, called Graph-Cut RANSAC, GC-RANSAC in short, is introduced. To separate inliers and outliers, it runs the graph-cut algorithm in the local optimization (LO) step which is applied when a so-far-the-best model is found. The proposed LO step is conceptually simple, easy to implement, globally optimal and efficient. GC-RANSAC is shown experimentally, both on synthesized tests and real image pairs, to be more geometrically accurate than state-of-the-art methods on a range of problems, e.g. line fitting, homography, affine transformation, fundamental and essenti…
A new method for robust estimation, MAGSAC++, is proposed. It introduces a new model quality (scoring) function that does not require the inlier-outlier decision, and a novel marginalization procedure formulated as an iteratively re-weighted least-squares approach. We also propose a new sampler, Progressive NAPSAC, for RANSAC-like robust estimators. Exploiting the fact that nearby points often originate from the same model in real-world data, it finds local structures earlier than global samplers. The progressive transition from local to global sampling does not suffer from the weaknesses of p…
Global methods to Structure from Motion have gained popularity in recent years. A significant drawback of global methods is their sensitivity to collinear camera settings. In this paper, we introduce an analysis and algorithms for averaging bifocal tensors (essential or fundamental matrices) when either subsets or all of the camera centers are collinear. We provide a complete spectral characterization of bifocal tensors in collinear scenarios and further propose two averaging algorithms. The first algorithm uses rank constrained minimization to recover camera matrices in fully collinear settin…

Given a set of point correspondences in two images, the existence of a fundamental matrix is a necessary condition for the points to be the images of a 3-dimensional scene imaged with two pinhole cameras. If the camera calibration is known then one requires the existence of an essential matrix. We present an efficient algorithm, using exact linear algebra, for testing the existence of a fundamental matrix. The input is any number of point correspondences. For essential matrices, we characterize the solvability of the Demazure polynomials. In both scenarios, we determine which linear subspaces …
This paper considers the foundational question of the existence of a fundamental (resp. essential) matrix given $m$ point correspondences in two views. We present a complete answer for the existence of fundamental matrices for any value of $m$. Using examples we disprove the widely held beliefs that fundamental matrices always exist whenever $m \leq 7$. At the same time, we prove that they exist unconditionally when $m \leq 5$. Under a mild genericity condition, we show that an essential matrix always exists when $m \leq 4$. We also characterize the six and seven point configurations in two vi…
