Nonlinear surface-plasmon polaritons~(NSPPs) in nanophotonic waveguides excite with dissimilar temporal properties due to input field modifications and material characteristics, but they possess similar nonlinear spectral evolution. In this work, we uncover the origin of this similarity and establish that the spectral dynamics is an inherent property of the system that depends on the synthetic dimension and is beyond waveguide geometrical dimensionality. To this aim, we design an ultra-low loss nonlinear plasmonic waveguide, to establish the invariance of the surface plasmonic frequency combs~(FCs) and phase singularities for plasmonic peregrine waves and Akhmediev breather. By finely tuning the nonlinear coefficient of the interaction interface, we uncover the conservation conditions through this plasmonic system and employ the mean-value evolution of the quantum NSPP field commensurate with the Schrödinger equation to evaluate spectral dynamics of the plasmonic FCs~(PFCs). Through providing suppressed interface losses and modified nonlinearity as dual requirements for conservative conditions, we propose exciting PFCs as equally spaced invariant quantities of this plasmonic scheme and prove that the spectral dynamics of the NSPPs within the interaction interface yields the formation of plasmonic analog of the synthetic photonic lattice, which we termed \textit{synthetic plasmonic lattice}~(SPL).
Large research articles based on graphene have been published in various areas since 2007 due to its unique properties. In both categories, graphene can be only electrically biased or magnetically and electrically biased simultaneously where the conductivity of graphene becomes…
Surface plasmon polaritons enable light concentration within subwavelength regions, opening thereby new avenues for miniaturizing the device and strengthening light-matter interactions. Here we realize effective electro-optic modulation in low-loss plasmonic waveguides with the aid of graphene, and the devices are fully integrated in the silicon-on-insulator platform. By advantageously exploiting low-loss plasmonic slot-waveguide modes, which weakly leak into a substrate while feature strong fields within the two-layer-graphene covered slots in metal, we successfully achieve a tunability of 0.…
Plasmonics can be used to improve absorption in optoelectronic devices and has been intensively studied for solar cells and photodetectors. Graphene has recently emerged as a powerful plasmonic material. It shows significantly less losses compared to traditional plasmonic materials such as gold and silver and its plasmons can be tuned by changing the Fermi energy with chemical or electrical doping. Here we propose the usage of graphene plasmonics for light trapping in optoelectronic devices and show that the excitation of localized plasmons in doped, nanostructured graphene can enhance optical…
We report systematic studies of plasmonic and photonic guiding modes in large-area chemical-vapor-deposition-grown graphene on nanostructured silicon substrates. Light interaction in graphene with substrate photonic crystals can be classified into four distinct regimes depending on the photonic crystal lattice constant and the various modal wavelengths (i.e. plasmonic, photonic and free-space). By optimizing the design of the substrate, these resonant modes can magnify the graphene absorption in infrared wavelength, for efficient modulators, filters, sensors and photodetectors on silicon photo…
Photonic crystals based on graphene plasmons (GPs) are highly tunable and can accurately control photonic transmission at the nanoscales. In this work, the transfer matrix method (TMM) is introduced to study graphene plasmonic crystal (GPC) with periodic surface conductivity in the case of normal incidence. The introduction of TMM after considering the abnormal phase scattering of the abrupt interface gives an idea to accurately manipulate plasmonic crystal structures, and can reduce the calculation workload to a certain extent. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified with the pla…
We investigate the surface plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) in semi-infinite graphene sheet arrays. The surface soliton is formed as the SPPs tunneling is inhibited by the graphene nonlinearity, and meanwhile the incident power should be above a threshold value. Thanks to the strong confinement of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on graphene, the effective width of surface PLSs can be squeezed into deep-subwavelength scale of ~ 0.001λ. Based on the stable propagation of surface PLSs, we find that the light propagation can be switched from the array boundary to the inner graphene sheets by re…
We propose and design an ultra-compact and broadband tunable multimode interference (MMI) splitter in mid-infrared based on graphene plasmonic waveguides. The size of the device is only 0.56μm*1.2μm, which corresponds to device area of only about 0.014λ^2, where λ is the vacuum wavelength. And the center wavelength of the device can be tuned in a broad band from 7μm to 9μm with the Fermi level of graphene varied from 0.5eV to 1eV. Furthermore, the device is easy to be fabricated on chip.
Graphene, owing to its ability to support plasmon polariton waves in the terahertz frequency range, enables the miniaturization of antennas to allow wireless communications among nanosystems. One of the main challenges in the demonstration of graphene antennas is finding suitable terahertz sources to feed the antenna. This paper estimates the performance of a graphene RF plasmonic micro-antenna fed with a photoconductive source. The terahertz source is modeled and, by means of a full-wave EM solver, the radiated power of the device is estimated with respect to material, laser illumination and …
We demonstrate that unidirectional and backscattering immune propagation of terahertz optical waves can be achieved in a topological valley-Hall waveguide made of graphene nanohole plasmonic crystals. In order to gain deeper physical insights into these phenomena, the band diagram of graphene nanohole plamsonic crystals has been investigated and optimized. We found that a graphene plasmonic crystal with nanohole arrays belonging to the $C_{6v}$ symmetry group possesses gapless Dirac cones, which can be gapped out by introducing extra nanoholes such that the symmetry point group of the system i…
We present a theoretical study of the spontaneous emission of a line dipole source embedded in a graphene--coated subwavelength wire of arbitrary shape. The modification of the emission and the radiation efficiencies are calculated by means of a rigorous electromagnetic method based on Green's second identity. Enhancement of these efficiencies is observed when the emission frequency coincides with one of the plasmonic resonance frequencies of the wire. The relevance of the dipole emitter position and the dipole moment orientation are evaluated. We present calculations of the near--field distri…
Infrared spectroscopy is the technique of choice for chemical identification of biomolecules through their vibrational fingerprints. However, infrared light interacts poorly with nanometric size molecules. Here, we exploit the unique electro-optical properties of graphene to demonstrate a high-sensitivity tunable plasmonic biosensor for chemically-specific label-free detection of protein monolayers. The plasmon resonance of nanostructured graphene is dynamically tuned to selectively probe the protein at different frequencies and extract its complex refractive index. Additionally, the extreme s…
One fundamental motivation to know the dispersive, or frequency dependent characteristics of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) supported by elliptical shaped particles wrapped with graphene sheet, as well as their scattering characteristics when these elliptical LSPs are excited, is related with the design of plasmonic structures capable to manipulate light at sub-wavelength scale. The anisotropy imposed by the ellipse eccentricity can be used as a geometrical tool for controlling plasmonic resonances. Unlike metallic case, where the multipolar eigenmodes are independent of each other, we find…
The electromagnetic response of subwavelength wires coated with a graphene monolayer illuminated by a linearly polarized plane waves is investigated. The results show that the scattering and extintion cross-sections of the coated wire can be dramatically enhanced when the incident radiation resonantly excites localized surface plasmons. The enhancements occur for p--polarized incident waves and for excitation frequencies that correspond to complex poles in the coefficients of the multipole expansion for the scattered field. By dynamically tuning the chemical potential of graphene, the spectral…
We couple photoluminescent semiconducting 7-atom wide armchair edge graphene nanoribbons to plasmonic nanoantenna arrays and demonstrate an enhancement of the photoluminescence and Raman scattering intensity of the nanoribbons by more than one order of magnitude. The increase in signal allows us to study Raman spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio. Using plasmonic enhancement we are able to detect the off-resonant Raman signals from the modified radial breathing-like mode (RBLM) due to physisorbed molecules, the 3rd order RBLM, and C-H vibrations. We find excellent agreement between data and…
The key feature of a thermophotovoltaic (TPV) emitter is the enhancement of thermal emission corresponding to energies just above the bandgap of the absorbing photovoltaic cell and simultaneous suppression of thermal emission below the bandgap. We show here that a single layer plasmonic coating can perform this task with high efficiency. Our key design principle involves tuning the epsilon-near-zero frequency (plasma frequency) of the metal acting as a thermal emitter to the electronic bandgap of the semiconducting cell. This approach utilizes the change in reflectivity of a metal near its pla…
In this paper, we proposed a theoretical model in the far-infrared and terahertz (THz) bands, which is a dumbbell-shaped graphene metamaterial arrays with a combination of graphene nanorod and two semisphere-suspended heads. We report a detailed theoretical investigation on how to enhance localized electric field and the absorption in the dumbbell-shaped graphene metamaterial arrays. The simulation results show that by changing the geometrical parameters of the structure and the Fermi level of graphene, we can change the absorption characteristics. Furthermore, we have discovered that the reso…
In the framework of full Maxwell equations, we systematically study the electromagnetic radiation, namely the transition radiation, when a swift electron perpendicularly crosses a monolayer graphene. Based on the plane wave expansion and the Sommerfeld integration, we demonstrate the spatial distribution of this free-electron radiation process in the frequency domain, which clearly shows the broadband excitation of both the photons and graphene plasmons. Moreover, the radiation spectra for the excited photons and graphene plasmons are analytically derived. We find that the excitation of photon…
Graphene-based photodetectors, taking advantage of high carrier mobility and broadband absorption in graphene, have recently experienced rapid development. Here, we demonstrate a waveguide coupled integrated graphene plasmonic photodetector on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Benefiting from plasmonic enhanced graphene-light interactions and subwavelength confinement of the optical energy, we present a small-footprint …
This article aims to study graphene-based resonators published in the literature. Graphene resonators are designed based on graphene conductivity, a variable parameter that can be changed by either electrostatic or magnetostatic gating. A historical review of plasmonic graphene resonators is presented in this paper, which can give physical insight to the researchers to be familiarized with four types of graphene-based resonators: 1-Ring resonators, 2- planar, 3- Fabry-Perot, and 4-other resonators which are not categorized in any of the other three groups.
The present work deals with a theoretical research on the emission and radiation properties of a dipole emitter source close to a dimer graphene plasmonic antenna. Modification of the radiation and the quantum efficiencies resulting from varying the position of the emitter and the orientation of its dipole moment are calculated by using a rigorous electromagnetic method based on Green's second identity. Large enhancements in the emission and the radiation of the emitter occur due to the coupling with the antenna surface plasmons in the spectral region from 4THz to 15THz. Our results show that …
We investigate the exceptional points (EPs) in a non-Hermitian system composed of a pair of graphene sheets with different losses. There are two surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) modes in the graphene waveguide. By varying the distance between two graphene sheets and chemical potential of graphene, the EPs appear as the eigenvalues, that is, the wave vectors of the two modes coalesce. The cross conversion of eigenmodes and variation of geometric phase can be observed by encircling the EP in the parametric space formed by the geometric parameters and chemical potential of graphene. At the same t…

The versatile control of graphene's plasmonic modes via an external gate-voltage inspires us to design efficient electro-optical graphene plasmonic logic gates at the midinfrared wavelengths. We show that these devices are superior to the conventional optical logic gates because the former possess cut-off states and interferometric effects. Moreover, the designed six basic logic gates (i.e., NOR/AND, NAND/OR, XNOR/XOR) achieved not only ultracompact size lengths of less than λ/28 with respect to the operating wavelength of 10 μm, but also a minimum extinction ratio as high as 15 dB. These grap…
High input intensities are usually required to efficiently excite optical nonlinear effects in ultrathin structures. The demonstration of enhanced nonlinear effects at THz frequencies is particularly important since these nonlinear mechanisms promise to play a significant role in the development and design of new reconfigurable planar THz nonlinear devices. In this work, we present a novel class of ultrathin nonlinear hybrid planar THz devices based on graphene-covered p…
Graphene is a unique material to study fundamental limits of plasmonics. Apart from the ultimate single-layer thickness, its carrier concentration can be tuned by chemical doping or applying an electric field. In this manner the electrodynamic properties of graphene can be varied from highly conductive to dielectric. Graphene supports strongly confined, propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in a broad spectral range from terahertz to mid-infrared frequencies. It also possesses a strong magneto-optical response and thus provides complimentary architectures to conventional magneto-plasmo…
Plasmonic crystals are a class of optical metamaterials that consist of engineered structures at the sub-wavelength scale. They exhibit optical properties that are not found under normal circumstances in nature, such as negative-refractive-index and epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior. Graphene-based plasmonic crystals present linear, elliptical, or hyperbolic dispersion relations that exhibit ENZ behavior, normal or negative-index diffraction. The optical properties can be dynamically tuned by controlling the operating frequency and the doping level of graphene. We propose a construction approac…
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is generally observed by excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on the metal (Au/Ag) surface. In order to utilize the SPR phenomenon for sensing application, the metal surface is functionalized with suitable ligands. Although such functionalization can enhance the specific adsorption capability of the sensor however due to large thickness of the ligands, the plasmonic field of the metal surface becomes less sensitive towards the adsorption of analytes. In the next generation SPR based sensor, graphene can be utilized not only as plasmonic material but also a s…
Using perturbation expansion of Maxwell equations, the amplitude equation is derived for nonlinear TM and TE surface plasmon waves supported by graphene. The equation describes interplay between in-plane beam diffraction and nonlinerity due to light intensity induced corrections to graphene conductivity and susceptibility of dielectrics. For strongly localized TM plasmons, graphene is found to bring the superior contribution to the overall nonlinearity. In contrast, nonlinear response of the substrate and cladding dielectrics can become dominant for weakly localized TE plasmons.

In this work, a plasmonic right-angled waveguide bend and divider are proposed. Using the Transformation Optics (TO) approach the transformation media of a bend and a T-shaped divider are obtained. Such media with continuous refractive index are realized with the help of graphene in the terahertz frequency range, key to effectively guiding the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation on the 90 degree curves. Components with such capability are promising for THz device applications.
An analytical circuit model able to predict the input impedance of reconfigurable graphene plasmonic dipoles is presented. A suitable definition of plasmonic characteristic impedance, employing natural currents, is used to for consistent modeling of the antenna-load connection in the circuit. In its purely analytical form, the model shows good agreement with full-wave simulations, and explains the remarkable tuning properties of graphene antennas. The concept, analysis, and design of series switches for graphene-strip plasmonic waveguides at near infrared frequencies are presented. Switching is achieved by using graphene's field effect to selectively enable or forbid propagation on a section of the graphene strip waveguide, thereby allowing good transmission or high isolation, respectively. The electromagnetic modeling of the proposed structure is performed using full-wave simulations and a transmission line model combined with a matrix-transfer approach, which takes into account the characteristics of the plasmons supported by the diff…
Graphene photonics has emerged as a promising platform for providing desirable optical functionality. However, graphene's monolayer-scale thickness fundamentally restricts the available light matter interaction, posing a critical design challenge for integrated devices, particularly in wavelength regimes where graphene plasmonics is untenable. While several plasmonic designs have been proposed to enhance graphene light interaction in these regimes, they suffer from substantial insertion loss due to metal absorption. Here we report a non-resonant metamaterial-based waveguide platform to overcom…
A graphene sheet gated with a ridged ground plane, creating a soft-boundary (SB) graphene nanoribbon, is considered. By adjusting the ridge parameters and bias voltage a channel can be created on the graphene which can guide TM surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). Two types of modes are found; fundemental and higher-order modes with no apparent cutoff frequency and with energy distributed over the created channel, and edge modes with energy concen-trated at the soft-boundary edge. Dispersion curves, electric near-field patterns, and current distributions of these modes are determined. Since the l…
An active plasmonic switch based on single- and few-layer doped graphene ribbon array operating in the mid-infrared spectrum is investigated with theoretical and numerical calculations. It is shown that significant resonance wavelength shifts and modulation depths can be achieved with a slight variation of the doping concentration of the graphene ribbon. The few-layer graphene ribbon array device outperforms the single-layer one in terms of the achievable modulation depth. Our simulations reveal that, by modulating the Fermi-energy level between 0.2 eV and 0.25 eV, a four-layer graphene ribbon…
Topologically protected plasmonic modes located inside topological bandgaps are attracting increasing attention, chiefly due to their robustness against disorder-induced backscattering. Here, we introduce a bilayer graphene metasurface that possesses plasmonic topological valley interface modes when the mirror symmetry of the metasurface is broken by horizontally shifting the lattice of holes of the top layer of the two freestanding graphene layers in opposite directions. In this configuration, light propagation along the domain-wall interface of the bilayer graphene metasurface shows unidirec…
We appraise a waveguide-integrated plasmonic graphene photodetector based on the hot carrier photo-bolometric effect, with performance characterized simultaneously by high responsivity, on the scale of hundreds of AW-1, and high speed on the scale of 100s of GHz. Performance evaluation is based on a theory of bolometric effect originating from the band nonparabolicity of graphene. Results compare favorably with the state-of-the-art plasmonic bolometric photodetectors, predicting up to two orders of magnitude increase in a responsivity while keeping speed on the same level, defined by the elect…
A hybrid plasmonic-dielectric metasurface is proposed in order to manipulate beam propagation in desired manners. The metasurface is composed of patterned hybrid graphene-silicon nano-disks deposited on a low-index substrate, namely silica. It is shown that the proposed hybrid metasurface simultaneously benefits from the advantages of graphene-based metasurfaces and dielectric ones. Specially, we show that the proposed hybrid metasurface not only provides reconfigurability, just like previously proposed graphene-based metasurfaces, but also similar to dielectric metasurfaces it is low loss and…
Plasmonic metasurfaces represent a promising platform for enhancing light-matter interaction. Active control of the optical response of metasurfaces is desirable for applications such as beam-steering, modulators and switches, biochemical sensors, and compact optoelectronic devices. Here we use a plasmonic metasurface with two Fano resonances to enhance the interaction of infrared light with electrically controllable single layer graphene. It is experimentally shown that the narrow spectral width of these resonances, combined with strong light/graphene coupling, enables reflectivity modulation…
In this paper, we propose a one-dimensional disordered plasmonic structure composed of a graphene single layer placed on a random grating composed of InAs. The propagation of a plasmonic wave through this structure is investigated numerically. By calculation of normalized localization length for systems with different disorder strengths, it is determined whether or not the system is in the localized regime. For some frequencies, depending on the disorder level, Anderson localization occurs for plasmonic waves propagating through the graphene layer. Furthermore, the effect of optical loss on th…

For this purpose, an analytical technique based on transmission line theory is employed to calculate the scattering parameters of the connection of the plas…
Plasmonic Faraday rotation in nanowires manifests itself in the rotation of the spatial intensity distribution of high-order surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes around the nanowire axis. Here we predict theoretically the giant Faraday rotation for SPP propagating on graphene-coated magneto-optically active nanowires. Upon the reversal of the external magnetic field pointing along the nanowire axis some high-order plasmonic modes may be rotated by up to ~ 100 degrees on scale of about 500 nm at mid-infrared frequencies. Tuning carrier concentration in graphene by chemical doping or gate volta…
All-optical switches have attracted attention because they can potentially overcome the speed limitation of electric switches. However, ultrafast, energy-efficient all-optical switches have been challenging to realize due to the intrinsically small optical nonlinearity in existing materials. As a solution, we propose graphene-loaded deep-subwavelength plasmonic waveguides (30 nm x 20 nm). Thanks to extreme light confinement, we have significantly enhanced optical nonlinear absorption in graphene, and achieved ultrafast all-optical switching with a switching energy of 35 fJ and a switching time…
We theoretically demonstrate a high-sensitivity, graphene-plasmon based refractive index sensor working in the mid-infrared at room temperature. The bulk figure of merit of our sensor reaches values above $10$, but the key aspect of our proposed plasmonic sensor is its surface sensitivity which we examine in detail. We have used realistic values regarding doping level and electron relaxation time, which is the limiting factor for the sensor performance. Our results show quantitatively the high performance of graphene-plasmon based refractive index sensors working in the mid-infrared.
