This article aims to study graphene-based resonators published in the literature. Graphene resonators are designed based on graphene conductivity, a variable parameter that can be changed by either electrostatic or magnetostatic gating. A historical review of plasmonic graphene resonators is presented in this paper, which can give physical insight to the researchers to be familiarized with four types of graphene-based resonators: 1-Ring resonators, 2- planar, 3- Fabry-Perot, and 4-other resonators which are not categorized in any of the other three groups.
We propose a plasmonic ellipse resonator possessing hybrid modes based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Specially, this nanocavity has hybrid characteristic of rectangle and disk resonator, therefore supporting both Fabry-Perot modes (FPMs) and whispering-gallery modes (WGMs). Besides, by changing the length of major and minor radius of the ellipse, the resonant wavelengths of FPMs and WGMs can be independently tuned and close to each other, thus constructing a plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) - like spectrum profile. Benefitting from this, a dual-band slow light is achieved …
Confining light in extreme subwavelength scales is a tantalizing task. In this work, we report a study of individual plasmonic film-coupled nanostar resonators where plasmonic optical modes are trapped in ultrasmall volumes. Individual gold nanostars, separated from a flat gold film by a thin dielectric spacer layer, exhibit a strong light confinement within the sub-10 nm volume of the nanostar's tips and the film. Through dark field scattering measurements of many individual nanostars, a statistical observation of the scattered spectra is obtained and compared with extensive simulation data t…
Plasmonic resonators have drawn more attention due to the ability to confine light into subwavelength scale. However, they always suffer from a low quality (Q) factor owing to the intrinsic loss of metal. Here, we numerically propose a plasmonic resonator with ultra-high Q factor based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structures. The resonator consists of a disk cavity surrounded by a concentric ring cavity, possessing an ultra-small volume. Arising from the plasmon hybridization between plasmon modes in the disk and ring cavity, the induced bonding hybridized modes have ultr…
Current micro nanomechanical system are usually based on rigid crystalline semiconductors that normally have high quality factors but lack adaptive responses to variable frequencies, a capability ubiquitous for communications in the biological world, such as bat and whale calls. Here, we demonstrate a soft mechanical resonator based on a freestanding organic-inorganic hybrid plasmonic superlattice nanosheet, which can respond adaptively to either incident light intensity or wavelength. This is achieved because of strong plasmonic coupling in closely-packed nanocrystals which can efficiently co…
We examine the properties of a gaseous plasma resonator generated by focusing a high-energy laser pulse through a lens and into a gas. An analytical model is presented describing the scattering resonance of these near-ellipsoidal plasmas and its dependence on their eccentricity and intrinsic plasma properties. This dependence is investigated through Ku band transmission experiments of a waveguide with an embedded single plasma element and through optical diagnostics of the laser-induced plasma. The described resonator has the potential to be used as the building block in a new class of metamat…
Graphene plasmonic resonators have been broadly studied in the terahertz and mid-infrared ranges because of their electrical tunability and large confinement factors which can enable dramatic enhancement of light-matter coupling. In this work, we demonstrate that the characteristic scaling laws of graphene plasmons change for smaller (< 40 nm) plasmonic wavelengths, expanding the operational frequencies of graphene plasmonic resonators into the near-infrared (NIR) and modifying their optical confinement properties. We utilize a novel bottom-up block copolymer lithography method that substantia…
This paper presents an efficient approach for exciting a dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) in the terahertz frequencies by means of a graphene plasmonic dipole. Design and analysis are performed in two steps. First, the propagation properties of hybrid plasmonic onedimensional and two-dimensional structures are obtained by using transfer matrix theory and the finite-element method. The coupling amount between the plasmonic graphene mode and the dielectric wave mode is explored based on different parameters. These results, together with DRA and plasmonic antenna theory, are then used to design…
Topological photonics has emerged as a novel paradigm for the design of electromagnetic systems from microwaves to nanophotonics. Studies to date have largely focused on the demonstration of fundamental concepts, such as non-reciprocity and waveguiding protected against fabrication disorder. Moving forward, there is a pressing need to identify applications where topological designs can lead to useful improvements in device performance. Here we review applications of topological photonics to ring resonator-based systems, including one- and two-dimensional resonator arrays, and dynamically-modul…
The omnipresent digitalization trend has enabled a number of related malicious activities, ranging from data theft to disruption of businesses, counterfeiting of devices, and identity fraud, among others. Hence, it is essential to implement security schemes and to ensure the reliability and trustworthiness of electronic circuits. Toward this end, the concept of physically unclonable functions (PUFs) has been established at the beginning of the 21st century. However, most PUFs have eventually, at least partially, fallen short of their promises, which are unpredictability, unclonability, uniquen…
Two types of novel graphene-based components, namely, filters and electro-optical switches in guided wave configuration are suggested and analysed. The filters differ from the known ones with collinear orientation of the input and output waveguides by geometry and symmetry. The components consist of a circular graphene disk and two nanoribbons oriented at $90^\circ$ to each other in the plane of the graphene layer. The graphene elements are placed on a dielectric substrate. We show that change in symmetry leads to a drastic change in the properties of the components. The physical principle of …
Strong vibrational coupling has been realized in a variety of mechanical systems from cavity optomechanics to electromechanics.$^{1, 2, 3, 4, 5}$ It is an essential requirement for enabling quantum control over the vibrational states.$^{6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11}$ The majority of the mechanical systems that have been studied to date are vibrational resonances of dielectric or semiconductor nanomaterials coupled to optical modes.$^{12, 13, 14, 15}$ While there are fewer studies of coupling between two mechanical modes,$^{3, 9}$ particularly, there have been no experimental observation of strong coupli…
Electromagnetic (EM) skyrmions are an EM analogue of the skyrmions in condensed matter physics, which offer new degrees of freedom to structure light and manipulate light matter interactions and thus promise various groundbreaking applications in optics and photonics. Recently, there is a growing interest in composing EM skyrmions based on different field vectors of EM waves. Here, we realize an EM skyrmion, i.e., a spoof plasmonic skyrmion, using the electric field vectors of spoof localized surface plasmons (spoof LSPs) in a planar microwave resonator with rotational and mirroring symmetries…
A split-ring resonator is a prototype of meta-atom in metamaterials. Though noble metal-based split-ring resonators have been extensively studied, up to date, there is no experimental demonstration of split-ring resonators made from graphene, an emerging intriguing plasmonic material. Here, we experimentally demonstrate graphene split-ring resonators with deep subwavelength (about one hundredth of the excitation wavelength) magnetic dipole response in the terahertz regime. Meanwhile, the quadrupole and electric dipole are observed, depending on the incident light polarization. All modes can be …
In this paper, a tunable plasmonic refractive index sensor with nanoring-strip graphene arrays is numerically investigated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The simulation results exhibit that by changing the sensing medium refractive index nmed of the structure, the sensing range of the system is large. By changing the doping level ng, we noticed that the transmission characteristics can be adjusted flexibly. The resonance wavelength remains entirely the same and the transmission dip enhancement over a big range of incidence angles [0,45] for both TM and TE polarizations, wh…
