Video inpainting aims to fill spatio-temporal "corrupted" regions with plausible content. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to find correspondences from neighbouring frames to faithfully hallucinate the unknown content. Current methods achieve this goal through attention, flow-based warping, or 3D temporal convolution. However, flow-based warping can create artifacts when optical flow is not accurate, while temporal convolution may suffer from spatial misalignment. We propose 'Progressive Temporal Feature Alignment Network', which progressively enriches features extracted from the current frame with the feature warped from neighbouring frames using optical flow. Our approach corrects the spatial misalignment in the temporal feature propagation stage, greatly improving visual quality and temporal consistency of the inpainted videos. Using the proposed architecture, we achieve state-of-the-art performance on the DAVIS and FVI datasets compared to existing deep learning approaches. The advent of deep learning in the past decade has significantly helped advance image inpainting. Although achieving promising performance, deep learning-based inpainting algorithms still struggle from the distortion caused by the fusion of structural and contextual features, which are commonly obtained from, respectively, deep and shallow layers of a convolutional encoder. Motivated by this observation, we propose a novel progressive inpainting network that maintains the structural and contextual integrity of a processed image. More specifically, inspired by the Gaussian and Laplacian pyramid…

We present a deep reinforcement learning method of progressive view inpainting for 3D point scene completion under volume guidance, achieving high-quality scene reconstruction from only a single depth image with severe occlusion. Our approach is end-to-end, consisting of three modules: 3D scene volume reconstruction, 2D depth map inpainting, and multi-view selection for completion. Given a single depth image, our method first goes through the 3D volume branch to obtain a volumetric scene reconstruction as a guide to the next view inpainting step, which attempts to make up the missing informati…
Most existing image inpainting algorithms are based on a single view, struggling with large holes or the holes containing complicated scenes. Some reference-guided algorithms fill the hole by referring to another viewpoint image and use 2D image alignment. Due to the camera imaging process, simple 2D transformation is difficult to achieve a satisfactory result. In this paper, we propose 3DFill, a simple and efficient method for reference-guided image inpainting. Given a target image with arbitrary hole regions and a reference image from another viewpoint, the 3DFill first aligns the two images…
Image inpainting aims at restoring missing regions of corrupted images, which has many applications such as image restoration and object removal. However, current GAN-based generative inpainting models do not explicitly exploit the structural or textural consistency between restored contents and their surrounding contexts. To address this limitation, we propose to enforce the alignment (or closeness) between the local data submanifolds (or subspaces) around restored images and those around the original (uncorrupted) images during the learning process of GAN-based inpainting models. We exploit L…

Psychologists recognize Raven's Progressive Matrices as a very effective test of general human intelligence. While many computational models have been developed by the AI community to investigate different forms of top-down, deliberative reasoning on the test, there has been less research on bottom-up perceptual processes, like Gestalt image completion, that are also critical in human test performance. In this work, we investigate how Gestalt visual reasoning on the Raven's test can be modeled using generative image inpainting techniques from computer vision. We demonstrate that a self-supervi…
Although deep learning has enabled a huge leap forward in image inpainting, current methods are often unable to synthesize realistic high-frequency details. In this paper, we propose applying super-resolution to coarsely reconstructed outputs, refining them at high resolution, and then downscaling the output to the original resolution. By introducing high-resolution images to the refinement network, our framework is able to reconstruct finer details that are usually smoothed out due to spectral bias - the tendency of neural networks to reconstruct low frequencies better than high frequencies. …
Hairstyle transfer is the task of modifying a source hairstyle to a target one. Although recent hairstyle transfer models can reflect the delicate features of hairstyles, they still have two major limitations. First, the existing methods fail to transfer hairstyles when a source and a target image have different poses (e.g., viewing direction or face size), which is prevalent in the real world. Also, the previous models generate unrealistic images when there is a non-trivial amount of regions in the source image occluded by its original hair. When modifying long hair to short hair, shoulders o…
We present a novel deep learning based algorithm for video inpainting. Video inpainting is a process of completing corrupted or missing regions in videos. Video inpainting has additional challenges compared to image inpainting due to the extra temporal information as well as the need for maintaining the temporal coherency. We propose a novel DNN-based framework called the Copy-and-Paste Networks for video inpainting that takes advantage of additional information in other frames of the video. The network is trained to copy corresponding contents in reference frames and paste them to fill the ho…

This paper proposes a novel video inpainting method. We make three main contributions: First, we extended previous Transformers with patch alignment by introducing Deformed Patch-based Homography (DePtH), which improves patch-level feature alignments without additional supervision and benefits challenging scenes with various deformation. Second, we introduce Mask Pruning-based Patch Attention (MPPA) to improve patch-wised feature matching by pruning out less essential features and using saliency map. MPPA enhances matching accuracy between warped tokens with invalid pixels. Third, we introduce…

Text-guided image inpainting (TGII) aims to restore missing regions based on a given text in a damaged image. Existing methods are based on a strong vision encoder and a cross-modal fusion model to integrate cross-modal features. However, these methods allocate most of the computation to visual encoding, while light computation on modeling modality interactions. Moreover, they take cross-modal fusion for depth features, which ignores a fine-grained alignment between text and image. Recently, vision-language pre-trained models (VLPM), encapsulating rich cross-modal alignment knowledge, have adv…

We propose a novel feed-forward network for video inpainting. We use a set of sampled video frames as the reference to take visible contents to fill the hole of a target frame. Our video inpainting network consists of two stages. The first stage is an alignment module that uses computed homographies between the reference frames and the target frame. The visible patches are then aggregated based on the frame similarity to fill in the target holes roughly. The second stage is a non-local attention module that matches the generated patches with known reference patches (in space and time) to refin…

In this work we propose a novel approach to remove undesired objects from RGB-D sequences captured with freely moving cameras, which enables static 3D reconstruction. Our method jointly uses existing information from multiple frames as well as generates new one via inpainting techniques. We use balanced rules to select source frames; local homography based image warping method for alignment and Markov random field (MRF) based approach for combining existing information. For the left holes, we employ exemplar based multi-view inpainting method to deal with the color image and coherently use it …
Recent GAN-based (Generative adversarial networks) inpainting methods show remarkable improvements and generate plausible images using multi-stage networks or Contextual Attention Modules (CAM). However, these techniques increase the model complexity limiting their application in low-resource environments. Furthermore, they fail in generating high-resolution images with realistic texture details due to the GAN stability problem. Motivated by these observations, we propose a multi-GAN architecture improving both the performance and rendering efficiency. Our training schema optimizes the paramet…

High-quality image inpainting requires filling missing regions in a damaged image with plausible content. Existing works either fill the regions by copying image patches or generating semantically-coherent patches from region context, while neglect the fact that both visual and semantic plausibility are highly-demanded. In this paper, we propose a Pyramid-context ENcoder Network (PEN-Net) for image inpainting by deep generative models. The PEN-Net is built upon a U-Net structure, which can restore an image by encoding contextual semantics from full resolution input, and decoding the learned se…

Existing learning-based image inpainting methods are still in challenge when facing complex semantic environments and diverse hole patterns. The prior information learned from the large scale training data is still insufficient for these situations. Reference images captured covering the same scenes share similar texture and structure priors with the corrupted images, which offers new prospects for the image inpainting tasks. Inspired by this, we first build a benchmark dataset containing 10K pairs of input and reference images for reference-guided inpainting. Then we adopt an encoder-decoder …

Existing inpainting methods have achieved promising performance for recovering regular or small image defects. However, filling in large continuous holes remains difficult due to the lack of constraints for the hole center. In this paper, we devise a Recurrent Feature Reasoning (RFR) network which is mainly constructed by a plug-and-play Recurrent Feature Reasoning module and a Knowledge Consistent Attention (KCA) module. Analogous to how humans solve puzzles (i.e., first solve the easier parts and then use the results as additional information to solve difficult parts), the RFR module recurre…
Contemporary domain adaptive semantic segmentation aims to address data annotation challenges by assuming that target domains are completely unannotated. However, annotating a few target samples is usually very manageable and worthwhile especially if it improves the adaptation performance substantially. This paper presents SSDAS, a Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptive image Segmentation network that employs a few labeled target samples as anchors for adaptive and progressive feature alignment between labeled source samples and unlabeled target samples. We position the few labeled target samples as …
Recent deep learning based image inpainting methods which utilize contextual information and two-stage architecture have exhibited remarkable performance. However, the two-stage architecture is time-consuming, the contextual information lack high-level semantics and ignores both the semantic relevance and distance information of hole's feature patches, these limitations result in blurry textures and distorted structures of final result. Motivated by these observations, we propose a new deep generative model-based approach, which trains a shared network twice with different targets and utilizes…

To solve the issue of video dehazing, there are two main tasks to attain: how to align adjacent frames to the reference frame; how to restore the reference frame. Some papers adopt explicit approaches (e.g., the Markov random field, optical flow, deformable convolution, 3D convolution) to align neighboring frames with the reference frame in feature space or image space, they then use various restoration methods to achieve the final dehazing results. In this paper, we propose a progressive alignment and restoration method for video dehazing. The alignment process aligns consecutive neighboring …
Inpainting high-resolution images with large holes challenges existing deep learning based image inpainting methods. We present a novel framework -- PyramidFill for high-resolution image inpainting task, which explicitly disentangles content completion and texture synthesis. PyramidFill attempts to complete the content of unknown regions in a lower-resolution image, and synthesis the textures of unknown regions in a higher-resolution image, progressively. Thus, our model consists of a pyramid of fully convolutional GANs, wherein the content GAN is responsible for completing contents in the low…
Image outpainting is a very intriguing problem as the outside of a given image can be continuously filled by considering as the context of the image. This task has two main challenges. The first is to maintain the spatial consistency in contents of generated regions and the original input. The second is to generate a high-quality large image with a small amount of adjacent information. Conventional image outpainting methods generate inconsistent, blurry, and repeated pixels. To alleviate the difficulty of an outpainting problem, we propose a novel image outpainting method using bidirectional b…

MeshFace photos have been widely used in many Chinese business organizations to protect ID face photos from being misused. The occlusions incurred by random meshes severely degenerate the performance of face verification systems, which raises the MeshFace verification problem between MeshFace and daily photos. Previous methods cast this problem as a typical low-level vision problem, i.e. blind inpainting. They recover perceptually pleasing clear ID photos from MeshFaces by enforcing pixel level similarity between the recovered ID images and the ground-truth clear ID images and then perform fac…

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) has achieved unprecedented success in improving the cross-domain robustness of object detection models. However, existing UDA methods largely ignore the instantaneous data distribution during model learning, which could deteriorate the feature representation given large domain shift. Reference-based image super-resolution (RefSR) is a promising SR branch and has shown great potential in overcoming the limitations of single image super-resolution. While previous state-of-the-art RefSR methods mainly focus on improving the efficacy and robustness of reference feature transfer, it is generally overlooked that a well reconstructed SR image should enable better SR reconstruction for its similar LR images when it is referred to as. Therefore, in this work, we propose a reciprocal learning framework that can appropriately leverage such a fact to reinforce the learning of a RefSR …
