We present a finite-size study of the athermal quasistatic yielding transition in structural glasses featuring a wide range of mechanical disorder. We find a crossover from gradual yielding in small systems, to a macroscopic discontinuous stress drop as the system size is increased. The crossover size grows significantly as the sample's structural disorder approaches the maximal value that a glass can attain. Our results suggest an analogy between the nature of the athermal quasistatic yielding transition in structural glasses and brittle fracture of fuse models and elastic networks. We discuss our results in the context of recent claims in the literature.
Using numerical simulations, we study the failure of an amorphous solid under quasi-static expansion starting from a homogeneous high-density state. During the volume expansion, we demonstrate the existence of instabilities manifesting via saddle-node bifurcation in which a minimum meets a saddle. During all such events, the smallest eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix vanishes as a square-root singularity. The plastic instabilities are manifested via sudden jumps in pressure and energy, with the largest event happening when a cavity appears, leading to the yielding of the material. We show that …
We study the statistical properties of the yielding transition in model amorphous solids in the limit of slow, athermal deformation. Plastic flow occurs via alternating phases of elastic loading punctuated by rapid dissipative events in the form of collective avalanches. We investigate their characterization through energy vs. stress drops and at multiple stages of deformation, thus revealing a change of spatial extent of the avalanches and degree of stress correlations as deformation progresses. We show that the statistics of stress and energy drops only become comparable for large events in …
In this paper we study the mechanical properties and pore structure in a three-dimensional molecular dynamics model of porous glass under athermal quasistatic shear. The vitreous samples are prepared by rapid thermal quench from a high temperature molten state. The pore structures form via solid-gas phase separation. The quiescent samples exhibit a wide range of pore topography, from inter-connected pore network to randomly distributed compact pores depending on the material density. We find the shear modulus strongly depends on the density and porosity. Under mechanical loading, the pore stru…
We study numerically the yielding transition of a two dimensional model glass subjected to athermal quasi-static cyclic shear deformation, with the aim of investigating the effect on the yielding behaviour of the degree of annealing, which in turn depends on the preparation protocol. We find two distinct regimes of annealing separated by a threshold energy. Poorly annealed glasses progressively evolve towards the threshold energy as the strain amplitude is increased towards the yielding value. Well annealed glasses with initial energies below the threshold energy exhibit stable behaviour, with…
Recent theoretical advances have led to the creation of a unified phase diagram for the thermal glass and athermal jamming transitions. This diagram makes clear that, while related, the mode-coupling---or dynamic---glass transition is distinct from the jamming transition, occurring at a finite temperature and significantly lower density than the jamming transition. Nonetheless, we demonstrate a pre-jamming transition in athermal frictionless spheres which occurs at the same density as the mode-coupling transition and is marked by percolating clusters of locally rigid particles. At this density…
The plastic deformation of amorphous solids is mediated by localized shear transformations involving small groups of particles rearranging irreversibly in an elastic background. We introduce and compare three different computational methods to extract the size and orientation of these shear transformations in simulations of a two-dimensional (2D) athermal model glass under simple shear. We find that the shear angles are broadly distributed around the macroscopic shear direction, with a more or less Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation of around 20 $\bullet$ about the direction of ma…
We study the yielding behaviour of a model glass under cyclic athermal quastistatic deformation computationally, and show that yielding is characterised by the discontinuous appearance of shear bands, whose width is about ten particle diameters at their initiation, in which the strain gets localised. Strain localisation is accompanied by a corresponding change in the energies, and a decrease in the density in the shear band. We show that the glass remains well annealed outside the shear band whereas the energies correspond to the highest possible energy minima at the given density within the s…
Yielding behavior in amorphous solids has been investigated in computer simulations employing uniform and cyclic shear deformation. Recent results characterise yielding as a discontinuous transition, with the degree of annealing of glasses being a significant parameter. Under uniform shear, discontinuous changes in stresses at yielding occur in the high annealing regime, separated from the poor annealing regime in which yielding is gradual. In cyclic shear simulations, relatively poorly annealed glasses become progressively better annealed as the yielding point is approached, with a relatively…
Glassy solids may undergo a fluidization (yielding) transition upon deformation whereby the material starts to flow plastically. It has been a matter of debate whether this process is controlled by a specific time scale, from among different competing relaxation/kinetic processes. Here, two constitutive models of cage relaxation are examined within the microscopic model of nonaffine elasto-plasticity. One (widely used) constitutive model implies that the overall relaxation rate is dominated by the fastest between the structural ($α$) relaxation rate and the shear-induced relaxation rate. A dif…
Self-organization, and transitions from reversible to irreversible behaviour, of interacting particle assemblies driven by externally imposed stresses or deformation is of interest in comprehending diverse phenomena in soft matter. They have been investigated in a wide range of systems, such as colloidal suspensions, glasses, and granular matter. In different density and driving regimes, such behaviour is related to yielding of amorphous solids, jamming, and memory formation, \emph{etc.} How these phenomena are related to each other has not, however, been much studied. In order to obtain a uni…
We analyze the effect of temperature on the yielding transition of amorphous solids using different coarse-grained model approaches. On one hand we use an elasto-plastic model, with temperature introduced in the form of an Arrhenius activation law over energy barriers. On the other hand, we implement a Hamiltonian model with a relaxational dynamics, where temperature is introduced in the form of a Langevin stochastic force. In both cases, temperature transforms the sharp transition of the athermal case in a smooth crossover. We show that this thermally smoothed transition follows a simple scal…
