Recently, edge computing has emerged as a promising paradigm to support mobile access in IoT multinetworks. However, coexistence of heterogeneous wireless communication schemes brings about new challenges to the mobility management and access control in such networks. To maintain its computing continuum, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) architecture can be applied to the distributed edge networks, which provides consistent frameworks for mobility management and creates secure mechanisms for access control. In this paper, we first review the state-of-the-art SDN technology and its applications in edge computing. In particular, we highlight the prominent issues related to mobility management and access control for SDN in the edge computing environment. We also introduce a number of effective solutions to these issues by presenting real-world testbed experiments, prototypes and numerical analysis of adopting SDN based edge computing paradigms for IoT multinetworks.

A Home Area Network (HAN) is considered to be a significant component of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and has been studied well in many works. It binds all the electrical components installed in a defined premise together for their close monitoring and management. However, HAN has been realized so far mostly as a centralized system. Therefore, like any other centralized system, the traditional realization of HAN also suffers from various well-known problems, such as single-point-of-failure, susceptibility to attacks, requirement of specialized infrastructure, inflexibility to easy ex…
While the management of heterogeneous network devices is usually solved by protocols like SNMP and NETCONF, there is still no such accepted solution for the management of heterogeneous IoT devices. To avoid the vendor lock-in, several organizations like the IETF, W3C and ETSI are working on standards with a semantic-based approach. While the semantic approach seems to be appealing to solve the interoperability problem, there is still the question whether this approach is suited for constrained IoT devices. Herein, we present the evaluation of the MYNO, a semantic-based framework. MYNO is based…

With the rise of dynamic network management and dynamic network programming technologies like Software-Defined Networking (SDN), traffic management and communication quality requirements can be tailored to fit niche use cases and characteristics. We propose a publish/subscrib…
The ubiquitous nature of IoT devices has brought new and exciting applications in computing and communication paradigms. Due to its ability to enable auto-configurable communication between IoT devices, pervasive applications, and remote clients, the use of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol is widespread. However, the advertisement and discovery mechanism of UPnP incurs significant overhead on resource-constrained IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a delegation-based approach that extends the UPnP protocol by offloading the service advertisement and discovery-related overhead fro…

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in incorporating blockchain for the Internet of Things (IoT) to address the inherent issues of IoT, such as single point of failure and data silos. However, blockchain alone cannot ascertain the authenticity and veracity of the data coming from IoT devices. The append-only nature of blockchain exacerbates this issue, as it would not be possible to alter the data once recorded on-chain. Trust and Reputation Management (TRM) is an effective approach to overcome the aforementioned trust issues. However, designing TRM frameworks for blockchain…

Particularly, it focuses on the interoperability, management, security and privacy issues in the IoT. It is concluded that there is a need to develop a multifaceted technology approac…
In Resilient IoT, the revenue of service provider is resilient to uncertain usage-contexts(e.g. emotion, environmental contexts) of Smart-device users. Hence, Autonomic Resilient IoT Management problem is decomposed into two subproblems, namely m-connectivity and k-dominance, such that m-alternations on revenue making process is resilient to users common interests, which might be depicted through k-1 alternations of usage-contexts. In this context, a greedy approximation scheme Bee is proposed, which resolves aforementioned sub-problems with five consecutive models, namely Maverick, Siren, Pig…
The incredible growth of sensors and microcontroller units makes the task of real-time event monitoring in the Internet of Things (IoT) based applications easier and more practical. In order to effectively support the event management in IoT-based applications, we propose a framework that is based on the publish-subscribe model for detecting events from IoT sensor nodes and sending notifications to subscribers (end-users) via Internet, SMS, and Calling. With the exception of the advantages inherited from the publish-subscribe model, the further advantages of the proposed framework are the ease…

A trust management system (TMS) is an integral component of any IoT network. A reliable trust management system must guarantee the network security, data integrity, and act as a referee that promotes legitimate devices, and punishes any malicious activities. Trust scores assigned by TMSs reflect devices' reputations, which can help predict the future behaviours of network entities and subsequently judge the reliability of different network entities in IoT networks. Many TMSs have been proposed in the literature, these systems are designed for small-scale trust attacks, and can deal with attack…

An inter-device coordination strategy is proposed to minimize the peak load as well as reduce the sudden change…
Many Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios require communication to and data acquisition from multiple devices with similar functionalities. For such scenarios, group communication in the form of multicasting and broadcasting has proven to be effective. Group Key Management (GKM) involves the handling, revocation, updation and distribution of cryptographic keys to members of various groups. Classical GKM schemes perform inefficiently in dynamic IoT environments, which are those wherein nodes frequently leave or join a network or migrate from one group to another over time. Recently, the `GroupIt'…

The development of Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPSs) in virtual network environment is facing severe challenges. On the one hand, the Internet of things (IoT) based on ICPSs construction needs a large amount of reasonable network resources support. On the other hand, ICPSs are facing severe network security problems. The integration of ICPSs and network virtualization (NV) can provide more efficient network resource support and security guarantees for IoT users. Based on the above two problems faced by ICPSs, we propose a virtual network embedded (VNE) algorithm with computing, storag…
As Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical systems become more ubiquitous and an integral part of our daily lives, it is important that we are able to trust the data aggregate from such systems. However, the interpretation of trustworthiness is contextual and varies according to the risk tolerance attitude of the concerned application and varying levels of uncertainty associated with the evidence upon which trust models act. Hence, the data integrity scoring mechanisms should have provisions to adapt to varying risk attitudes and uncertainties. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian inferenc…
In Happy IoT, the revenue of service providers synchronizes to the unobservable and dynamic usage-contexts (e.g. emotion, environmental information, etc.) of Smart-device users. Hence, the usage-context-estimation from the unreliable Smart-device sensed data is justified as an unsupervised and non-linear optimization problem. Accordingly, Autonomic Happy IoT Management is aimed at attracting initial user-groups based on the common interests (i.e. recruitment ), then uncovering their latent usage-contexts from unreliable sensed data (i.e. revenue-renewal ) and synchronizing to usage-context dyn…
The present paper deals with online convex optimization involving both time-varying loss functions, and time-varying constraints. The loss functions are not fully accessible to the learner, and instead only the function values (a.k.a. bandit feedback) are revealed at queried points. The constraints are revealed after making decisions, and can be instantaneously violated, yet they must be satisfied in the long term. This setting fits nicely the emerging online network tasks such as fog computing in the Internet-of-Things (IoT), where online decisions must flexibly adapt to the changing user pre…

Thus, integrating edge/fog and cloud infrastructures can support the execution of diverse latency-sensitive and computation-intensive IoT applications. Although some frameworks attempt to provide such integration, there are still several challenges to be addressed, such as dynamic scheduling …
