The importance of the chromosphere in the mass and energy transport within the solar atmosphere is now widely recognised. This review discusses the physics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities in large-scale chromospheric structures as well as in magnetic flux tubes. We highlight a number of key observational aspects that have helped our understanding of the role of the solar chromosphere in various dynamic processes and wave phenomena, and the heating scenario of the solar chromosphere is also discussed. The review focuses on the physics of waves and invokes the basics of plasma instabilities in the context of this important layer of the solar atmosphere. Potential implications, future trends and outstanding questions are also delineated.
The presence of the magnetic field is critical to transport energy through the solar atmosphere. The new generation of telescopes will provide new insight into how the magnetic field arrives into the chromosphere and its role in the energy balance of the solar atmosphere. We have used a 3D radiative MHD numerical model of the solar atmosphere with high spatial resolution (4~km) calculated with the Bifrost code. This code solves the full MHD equations with non-grey and non-LTE radiative transfer and thermal conduction along magnetic field lines. The model shows how the lower chromosphere in the…
We measure the effects of non-isotropic thermal conduction on generation of solar chromospheric jets through numerical simulations carried out with the use of one fluid MHD code MAGNUS. Following the work of Srivastava et al. (2018), we consider the atmospheric state with a realistic temperature model and generate the ejection of plasma through a gas pressure driver operating in the top chromosphere. We consider the magnetic field mimicking a flux tube and perform parametric studies by varying the magnetic field strength and the amplitude of the driver. We find that in the case of thermal cond…
Aims: We examine the movements of mass elements within dense fibrils using passive tracer particles (corks) in order to understand fibril creation and destruction processes. Methods: Simulated fibrils were selected at times when they were visible in an H$α$ image proxy. The corks were selected within fibril H$α$ formation regions. From this set, a cork was selected, and the field line passing through it was constructed. Other fibrilar corks close to this fieldline were also selected. Pathlines were constructed, revealing the locations of the mass elements forward and backward in time. The forc…
Sunspots have played a key role in aiding our understanding of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave phenomenon in the Sun's atmosphere, and it is well known they demonstrate a number of wave phenomenon associated with slow MHD modes. Recent studies have shown that transverse wave modes are present throughout the majority of the chromosphere. Using high-resolution Ca II 8542 Å observations from the Swedish Solar Telescope, we provide the first demonstration that the chromospheric super-penumbral fibrils, which span out from the sunspot, also show ubiquitous transverse motions. We interpret these moti…
The structure of the solar chromosphere is believed to be governed by magnetic fields, even in quiet-Sun regions that have a relatively weak photospheric field. During the past decade inversion methods have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing the chromosphere of active regions. The applicability of inversions to infer the stratification of the physical conditions in a dynamic 3D solar chromosphere has not yet been studied in detail. This study aims to establish the diagnostic capabilities of non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) inversion techniques of Stokes profiles induced by the…
We perform magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the propagation of Alfven wave in magnetic chromosphere. We use the 1.5-dimensional expanding flux tube geometry setting and transverse perturbation at the bottom to generate the Alfven wave. Compared with previous studies, our expansion is that we include the radiative loss term introduced by Carlsson & Leenaarts (2012). We find that when an observation based transverse wave generator is applied, the spatial distribution of the time-averaged radiative loss profile in our simulation is consistent with that in the classic atmospher…
Hard X-ray (HXR) sources are frequently observed near the top of solar flare loops, and the emission is widely ascribed to bremsstrahlung. We here revisit an alternative scenario which stresses the importance of inverse Compton processes and the Kelvin- Helmholtz instability (KHI) proposed by Fang et al. (2016). This scenario adds a novel ingredient to the standard flare model, where evaporation flows from flare-impacted chromospheric foot-points interact with each other near the loop top and produce turbulence via KHI. The turbulence can act as a trapping region and as an efficient accelerato…
The heating of the chromosphere in internetwork regions remains one of the foremost open questions in solar physics. In the present study we tackle this old problem by using a very high spatial-resolution simulation of quiet-Sun conditions performed with radiative MHD numerical models and IRIS observations. We have expanded a previously existing 3D radiative MHD numerical model of the solar atmosphere, which included self-consistently locally driven magnetic amplification in the chromosphere, by adding ambipolar diffusion and time-dependent non-equilibrium hydrogen ionization to the model. The…
Fast magnetic reconnection plays a fundamental role in driving explosive dynamics and heating in the solar chromosphere. The reconnection time scale of traditional models is shortened at the onset of the coalescence instability, which forms a turbulent reconnecting current sheet through plasmoid interaction. In this work we aim to investigate the role of partial ionisation on the development of fast reconnection through the study of the coalescence instability of plasmoids. Unlike the processes occurring in fully ionised coronal plasmas, relatively little is known about how fast reconnection d…
Recent observational and numerical studies show a variety of thermal structures in the solar chromosphere. Given that the thermal interplay across the transition region is a key to coronal heating, it is worth investigating how different thermal structures of the chromosphere yield different coronal properties. In this work, by MHD simulations of Alfvén-wave heating of coronal loops, we study how the coronal properties are affected by the chromospheric temperature. To this end, instead of solving the radiative transfer equation, we employ a simple radiative loss function so that the chromosphe…
We review and discuss insights on ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities that can play a role in destabilizing solar coronal flux rope structures. For single flux ropes, failed or actual eruptions may result from internal or external kink evolutions, or from torus unstable configurations. We highlight recent findings from 3D magnetic field reconstructions and simulations where kink and torus instabilities play a prominent role. For interacting current systems, we critically discuss different routes to coronal dynamics and global eruptions, due to current channel coalescence or to tilt-k…
Coronal and Chromospheric Signatures of Large-Scale Disturbances Associated with a Major Solar Eruption
Connectivity between the solar photosphere and chromosphere in a vortical structure. Observations of multi-phase, small-scale magnetic field amplification
Recent observations at high spatial resolution have shown that magnetic flux cancellation occurs on the solar surface much more frequently than previously thought, and so this led Priest et al 2018 to propose magnetic reconnection driven by photospheric flux cancellation as a mechanism for chromospheric and coronal heating. In particular, they estimated analytically the amount of energy released as heat and the height of the energy release during flux cancellation. In the present work, we take the next step in the theory by setting up a two-dimensional resistive MHD simulation of two canceling…
The subject of this study is oscillations in the lower atmosphere in coronal-hole regions, where the conditions are favorable for propagation between the atmospheric layers. Based on spectroscopic observations in photospheric and chromospheric lines, we analysed the features of the oscillations that show signs of propagation between layers of the solar atmosphere. Using the cross-spectrum wavelet algorithm, we found that both chromospheric and photospheric signals under coronal holes share a range of significant oscillations of periods around five minutes, while the signals outside of coronal …
Emergence of granular-sized magnetic bubbles through the solar atmosphere. II. Non-LTE chromospheric diagnostics and inversions
Vortex structures in the Sun's chromosphere are believed to channel energy between different layers of the solar atmosphere. We investigate the nature and dynamics of two small-scale quiet-Sun rotating structures in the chromosphere. We analyse two chromospheric structures that show clear rotational patterns in spectropolarimetric observations taken with the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) at the Ca II 8542 Å~ line. We present the detection of spectropolarimetric signals that manifest the magnetic nature of rotating structures in the chromosphere. Our observations show two lo…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are candidates for heating the solar chromosphere, although it is still unclear which mode of the wave is dominant in heating. We perform two-dimensional radiative MHD simulation to investigate the propagation of MHD waves in the quiet region of the solar chromosphere. We identify the mode of the shock waves by using the relationship between gas pressure and magnetic pressure across the shock front and calculate their corresponding heating rate through the entropy jump to obtain a quantitative understanding of the wave heating process in the chromosphere. Our re…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) spectroscopy is central to many astrophysical disciplines, ranging from helio- to asteroseismology, over solar coronal (loop) seismology, to the study of waves and instabilities in jets, accretion disks, or solar/stellar atmospheres. MHD spectroscopy quantifies all linear (standing or travelling) wave modes, including overstable (i.e. growing) or damped modes, for a given configuration that achieves force and thermodynamic balance. Here, we present Legolas, a novel, open-source numerical code to calculate the full MHD spectrum of one-dimensional equilibria with flow, …
Inspired by recent observations suggesting that photospheric magnetic flux cancellation occurs much more frequently than previously thought, we analytically estimated the energy released from reconnection driven by photospheric flux cancellation, and proposed that it can act as a mechanism for chromospheric and coronal heating (Priest et al., 2018). Using two-dimensional simulations we validated the analytical estimates and studied the resulting atmospheric response (Syntelis et al. 2019). In the present work, we set up three-dimensional resistive MHD simulations of two cancelling polarities i…
