Correlations between the strange quark mass, strange quark condensate $\langle \bar s s\rangle$, and the kaon partially conserved axial current (PCAC) relation are developed. The key dimensionless and renormalization-group invariant quantities in these correlations are the ratio of the strange to non-strange quark mass $r_m=m_s/m_q$, the condensate ratio $r_c=\langle \bar s s\rangle/\langle \bar q q\rangle$, and the kaon PCAC deviation parameter $r_p=-m_s\langle \bar s s+\bar q q\rangle/2f_K^2m_K^2$. The correlations define a self-consistent trajectory in the $\{r_m,r_c,r_p\}$ parameter space constraining strange quark parameters that can be used to assess the compatibility of different predictions of these parameters. Combining the constraint with Particle Data Group (PDG) values of $r_m$ results in $\{r_c,r_p\}$ constraint trajectories that are used to asses the self-consistency of various theoretical determinations of $\{r_c,r_p\}$. The most precise determinations of $r_c$ and $r_p$ are shown to be mutually consistent with the constraint trajectories and provide improved bounds on $r_p$. In general, the constraint trajectories combined with $r_c$ determinations tend to provide more accurate bounds on $r_p$ than direct determinations. The $\{r_c,r_p\}$ correlations provide a natural identification of a self-consistent set of strange quark mass and strange quark condensate parameters.
We consider a simple model for the strangeness radius of the nucleon. The model is based on vector meson dominance (VMD) and $ω- ϕ$ mixing in addition to a kaon cloud contribution. We find that the VMD contribution is similar in magnitude and of the same sign as the kaon contribution to the Sachs strangeness radius and is significantly larger than the kaon contribution to the Dirac radius. Two figures (not included) can be obtained through the authors (marina@quark.umd.edu).
The behavior of kaons and pions in strange quark matter in weak equilibrium, is investigated within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio [NJL] model. This work focuses a region of high densities where the behavior of mesons has not been explored in the framework of this model. It is found that above the density where strange valence quarks appear in the medium, $ρ= 3.8 ρ_0$, a change of behavior of different observables is observed indicating a tendency to the restoration of flavor symmetry. In particular, the splitting between charge multiplets, $K^+, K^-; K^0, {\bar K^0} {and} π^+, π^-$ decrease and…
The strange vector form factors are evaluated in the range between $Q^2=0$ and $Q^2=1\ \mbox{GeV}^2$ in the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model (or semi-bosonized SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model). The rotational $1/N_c$ and $m_s$ corrections are taken into account up to linear order. Taking care of a proper Yukawa-tail of the kaonic cloud, we get $\langle r^{2}\rangle^{\rm Sachs}_{s}=-0.095\; \mbox{fm}^2$ and $μ_s = -0.68\;μ_N$. The results are compared with several different models.
The strange magnetic moment of the proton is small in the chiral quark model, because of a near cancellation between the quantum fluctuations that involve kaons and $s$-quarks and loops that involve radiative transitions between strange vector mesons and kaons.
We present a calculation of the $K_{\ell 3}$ transition form factors using the AdS/QCD correspondence. We also solidify and extend our ability to calculate quantities in the flavor-broken versions of AdS/QCD. The normalization of the form factors is a crucial ingredient for extracting $|V_{us}|$ from data, and the results obtained here agree well with results from chiral perturbation theory and lattice gauge theory. The slopes and curvature of the form factors agree well with the data, and with what results are available from other methods of calculation.
The mass spectrum of the kaon family is analyzed by the {modified} Godfrey-Isgur model with a color screening effect approximating the kaon as a heavy-light meson system. This analysis gives us the structure and possible assignments of the observed kaon candidates, which can be tested by comparing the theoretical results of their two-body strong decays with the experimental data. Additionally, prediction of some partial decay widths is made on the kaons still missing in experiment. This study is crucial to establishing the kaon family and searching for their higher excitations in the future.
We review our analysis of $πK$ scattering using forward dispersion relations. The method yields a set of simple parameterizations that are compatible with forward dispersion relations up to 1.6 GeV while still describing the data. Once the partial waves are obtained, we calculate the poles in the complex plane by means of Padé approximants, thus avoiding a particular model for the pole parameterization. The resonances calculated below 1.8 GeV are the much debated scalar $κ$-meson, nowadays known as $K_0^*(800)$, the scalar $K_0^*(1430)$, the $K^*(892)$ and $K_1^*(1410)$ vectors, the spin-two $…
Laplace transform QCD sum rules for two-point functions related to the strangeness-changing scalar and pseudoscalar Green's functions $ψ(Q^2)$ and $ψ_5(Q^2)$, are used to determine the subtraction constants $ψ(0)$ and $ψ_5(0)$, which fix the ratio $R_{su}\equiv \frac{<\bar{s}s>}{<\bar{u}u>}$. Our results are $ψ(0)= - (1.06 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-3} {GeV}^4$, $ψ_5(0)= (3.35 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-3} {GeV}^4$, and $R_{su}\equiv \frac{<\bar{s}s>}{<\bar{u}u>} = 0.5 \pm 0.1$. This implies corrections to kaon-PCAC at the level of 50%, which although large, are not inconsistent with the size of the cor…
Intrinsic strangeness contributions to low-energy strange quark matrix elements of the nucleon are modelled using kaon loops and meson-nucleon vertex functions taken from nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon scattering. A comparison with pion loop contributions to the nucleon electromagnetic (EM) form factors indicates the presence of significant SU(3)-breaking in the mean-square charge radii. As a numerical consequence, the kaon loop contribution to the mean square Dirac strangeness radius is significantly smaller than could be observed with parity-violating elastic ep experiments planned for …
Starting from the $ω$-$ϕ$ mixing, further assuming the coupling of the quark-current of some flavour to be of universal strenth exclusively to the component of vector-meson wave function with the same flavour and finally taking numerical values of the coupling constant ratios $(f_{ωK \bar K}/f_ω^e)$, $(f_{ϕK\bar K/f_ϕ^e)$ from the isoscalar part of a realistic six-resonance unitary and analytic model of the kaon electromagnetic structure, the strange-quark vector current form factor behaviour of K-mesons in space-like and time-like regions is predicted.
Light constituent quark masses and the corresponding dynamical quark masses are determined by data, the quark-level linear sigma model, and infrared QCD. This allows to define effective nonstrange and strange current quark masses, which reproduce the experimental pion and kaon masses very accurately, by simple additivity. In contrast, the usual nonstrange and strange current quarks employed by the Particle Data Group and Chiral Perturbation Theory do not allow a straightforward quantitative explanation of the pion and kaon masses.
We study phase transitions and the behavior of kaons in hot and dense matter, giving special attention to the role of strange quarks. At T=0, it is found that the fraction of the strange valence quarks affects the energy per particle of the system, without changing the nature of the phase transition, and, on the other side, it has meaningful effects on the behavior of kaons and antikaons masses. The phase behavior of kaons in the $T-ρ$ plane is analyzed in connection with the chiral phase transition.
The behavior of strange matter in the frame of the SU(3)Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model including $U_A(1)$ anomaly is considered. We discuss the appearance of a peak in the ratio of the number of strange mesons to non-strange mesons known as the "horn". The PNJL model gives a schematic description of the chiral phase transition and meson properties at finite temperature and density. Using the model, we can show that the splitting of kaon and anti-kaon masses appears as a result of introduction of density. This may explain the difference in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio and $K^-/π^-$ rati…
We examine how the signature of the strange-dibaryon resonances in the barKNN-piSigmaN system shows up in the scattering amplitude on the physical real energy axis within the framework of Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas (AGS) equations. The so-called point method is applied to handle the three-body unitarity cut in the amplitudes. We also discuss the possibility that the strange-dibaryon production reactions can be used for discriminating between existing models of the two-body barKN-piSigma system with Lambda(1405).
We calculate the cumulants and correlation functions of net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7$ GeV using a multiphase transport model (AMPT) with both a new coalescence mechanism and all charge conservation laws. The AMPT model can qualitatively describe the centrality dependences of the net-kaon cumulants and cumulant ratios measured by the STAR experiment. By focusing on the stage evolution of the cumulants, cumulant ratios, and correlation functions, we reveal several key effects on the fluctuations and correlations of strangeness during the dynamic…
The strange particle production off the nucleon induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is investigated at low and intermediate energies. We develop a microscopic model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangian. The studied mechanisms are the main source of single kaon production for (anti)neutrino energies up to 1.5 GeV. Using this model we have also studied the associated production of kaons and hyperons. The cross sections are large enough to be measured by experiments such as MINER$ν$A, T2K and NO$ν$A.
In the present work, we investigate the production of $P-$wave charmed or charmed-strange mesons in the pion or kaon induced reactions on a proton target. The total cross sections as well as the differential cross sections depending on the scattering angle are evaluated in an effective Lagrangian approach. Our estimations indicate that magnitude of the cross sections strongly depends on the model parameter but such dependence can be almost completely canceled for the cross section ratios. These model independent ratios can be taken as a good criterion of the validity of heavy quark limit in th…
We point out that decoherence parameters in the correlated two neutral kaon system breaks the transformation invariance of basis and their magnitude are stringently limited by the experimentally measured magnitudes of CP violation and of the strangeness non conserving $ΔS = \pm 2$ transitions.
We examine how the signature of the strange dibaryon resonances shows up in scattering amplitudes and observables of the three-body $\bar{K}NN$-$πY N (Y=Σ, Λ)$ system on the physical real energy axis. The so-called point method is applied to handle logarithmic singularities that appear in solving the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations for the real scattering energies. By taking two different kinds of models for the two-body $\bar{K}N$-$πΣ$ subsystem, both of which reproduce the available data equally well but give quite a different resonance-pole structure for $Λ(1405)$, we also investigate whe…
In the general two Higgs doublet model (g2HDM) that has extra Yukawa couplings, we analyze their New Physics (NP) contributions to kaon mixing parameter $\varepsilon_K$, direct CP violation parameter $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$, and rare $K^+ \to π^+ν\barν$, $K_L \to π^0ν\barν$, and $K_{L, S} \to μ^+ μ^-$ decays. We study correlations between these observables, and call special attention to a unique complementarity of kaon mixing and rare $K\to πν\barν$ decays in probing the exotic Higgs mass spectrum of g2HDM. The importance of kaon physics in probing NP vis-à-vis B physics is stressed. …
Using the moments of the net-kaon distribution calculated within a state of-the-art hadron resonance gas model compared to experimental data from STAR's Beam Energy Scan, we find that the extracted strange freeze-out temperature is incompatible with the light one extracted from net-proton and net-charge fluctuations. Additionally predictions for net-$Lambda$ fluctuations are made that also appear to be consistent with a higher freeze-out temperature for strange particles. This strangeness freeze-out temperature is roughly $10-15$ MeV higher than the corresponding light freeze-out temperature. …
The medium modifications of the energies of kaons and antikaons in isospin asymmetric hyperonic matter are investigated using a chiral SU(3) model. The isospin dependent medium effects, are important for asymmetric heavy ion collision experiments, as well as relevant for the neutron star phenomenology as the bulk matter in the interior of the neutron star is highly isospin asymmetric. The effects of hyperons on the medium modifications of the kaons and antikaons in the strange hadronic matter are investigated in the present work and are seen to be appreciable for hadronic matter with large str…
The weak kaon production off the nucleon induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is studied at low and intermediate energies of interest for some ongoing and future neutrino oscillation experiments. We develop a microscopical model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangians. The studied mechanisms are the main source of kaon production for neutrino energies up to 2 GeV for the various channels and the cross sections are large enough to be amenable to be measured by experiments such as Minerva, T2K and NO$ν$A.
The existence of the $J^p=1/2^+$ narrow resonance predicted by the chiral soliton model has been investigated by utilizing the new kaon photoproduction data. For this purpose, we have constructed two phenomenological models, which are able to describe kaon photoproduction from threshold up to W=1730 MeV. By varying the resonance mass, width, and $KΛ$ branching ratio in this energy range we found that the most convincing mass of this resonance is 1650 MeV. Using this result we estimate the masses of other antidecuplet family members.
We investigate the information which could be obtained from Drell-Yan processes with sufficiently intense beams of charged kaons on isoscalar targets. It is found that combinations of $K^+$ and $K^-$ Drell-Yan measurements on isoscalar nuclear targets would allow one to extract the kaon sea quark distributions. These cross sections are also sensitive to the strange valence quark distribution in the kaon, although one would need a significant increase over the presently available kaon fluxes in order to extract this quantity with sufficient accuracy.
The expansion and hadronization of a quark meson plasma is studied using an effective chiral interaction Lagrangian. The particles we consider are light as well as strange quarks, which can form pions, kaons and eta mesons via collision processes. The transport equations for the system are solved using a QMD type algorithm. We find that in chemical equilibrium at high temperatures the strange quark mass is considerably higher than the strange current quark mass and becomes even higher if we assume an initial state free of strange quarks. This leads to a considerably higher production threshold…
The core of neutron-star matter is supposed to be at a much higher density than the normal nuclear matter density for which various possibilities have been suggested such as, for example, meson or hyperon condensation and/or deconfined quark or color-superconducting matter. In this work, we explore the implication on hadron physics of a dense compact object that has three "phases", nuclear matter at the outer layer, kaon condensed nuclear matter in the middle and strange quark matter at the core. Using a drastically simplified but not unreasonable model, we develop the scenario where the diffe…
The recently developed method to investigate mesonic fluctuations off the chiral soliton in the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model is applied to kaons in the S--wave channel. It is shown that for commonly accepted choices of parameters the presence of the soliton and the lack of confinement in this model provide an unphysical (valence) quark threshold which is lower than the kaon mass. Choosing parameters such that this threshold is avoided a bound state is obtained in the S--wave channel. After semiclassical quantization this state acquires the quantum numbers of an odd parity $Λ$ and is predicted at…
Recent developments and open issues in chiral dynamics with strange quarks are reviewed. Topics include: Order parameters of chiral symmetry breaking, the flavor dependence of these order parameters, speculations about the phase structure of QCD with varying number of flavors, OZI violation and its natural emergence in case of a small strange quark condensate, heavy kaon chiral perturbation theory, an update on pion-pion, pion-kaon and pion-nucleon sigma terms, the dynamics and nature of scalar mesons, the role of the scalar pion and kaon form factors, attempts to describe some strange baryons…
The coupling constants G_(K N Lambda) and G_(K N Sigma) are obtained from the Goldberger-Treiman relation in the strange channel with chiral symmetry breaking taken into account. The results, G_(K N Lambda)=-12.3+-1.2 and G_(K N Sigma)=5.5+-.5 come close to the SU(3) values.
We consider the matrix elements of the left-handed flavor-conserving four-quark operators in the nucleon and pion states. Using chiral symmetry, we derive relationships among these matrix elements. We argue that the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule of hyperon and kaon non-leptonic weak decay implies possible large strange-quark content in the nucleon and pion.
We investigate the spin structure of the kaon, based on the nonlocal chiral quark model from the instanton vacuum. We first revisit the electromagnetic form factors of the pion and kaon, improving the results for the kaon. We evaluate the generalized tensor form factors of the kaon in order to determine the probability density of transversely polarized quarks inside the kaon. We consider the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking, so that the probability density of the up and strange quarks are examined in detail. It is found that the strange quark behaves differently inside the kaon in com…
It is shown that the neutrino and neutral kaon oscillation processes can be consistently described in quantum field theory using only the mass eigenstates of neutrinos and neutral kaons. The distance-dependent and time-dependent parts of the amplitudes of these processes are calculated and the results turn out to be in accord with those of the standard quantum mechanical description of these processes based on the notion of neutrino flavor states and neutral kaon states with definite strangeness. However, the physical picture of the phenomena changes radically: now there are no oscillations of…
The two-point correlation functions of kaonic viscous stress tensors and electro-magnetic currents have been calculated respectively to estimate the contributions of the strange sector in the shear viscosity and electrical conductivity of hadronic medium. In the one-loop correlators, kaon propagators contain a non-zero thermal width that leads to non-divergent values of transport coefficients. With the help of effective Lagrangian densities of strange hadrons, we have calculated in-medium self-energy of kaon for different possible mesonic loops, whose imaginary part provide the estimation of k…
A simple model for the photoproduction of kaons off protons with a lambda hyperon in the final state is presented. In a quark model, the interaction is modelled by the pair-creation of the (anti-) strange quarks in the final state which recombine with the three quarks of the proton to form the lambda and kaon. The calculated scattering cross sections for photon energies up to $E_γ= 1.9 \; \mbox{GeV}$ are compared to experiment. The pair-creation process is found to have a significant contribution to the total cross section.
Scalar matrix elements involving strange quarks are studied in several models. Apart from a critical reexamination of results obtained in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model we study a scenario, motivated by instanton physics, where spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is induced by the flavor-mixing 't Hooft interaction only. We also investigate possible contributions of virtual kaon loops to the strangeness content of the nucleon.
Tagging jets of strongly interacting particles initiated by energetic strange quarks is one of the few largely unexplored Standard Model object classification problems remaining in high energy collider physics. In this paper we investigate the purest version of this classification problem in the form of distinguishing strange-quark jets from down-quark jets. Our strategy relies on the fact that a strange-quark jet contains on average a higher ratio of neutral kaon energy to neutral pion energy than does a down-quark jet. Long-lived neutral kaons deposit energy mainly in the hadronic calorimete…
A Comment on the recently published reevaluation of the polarization-averaged parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon using final data on the multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering is reviewed. Important features of the comparison of one-dimensional projections of the multidimensional HERMES data are pointed out. A test of the leading-order extraction of xS(x) using the difference between charged-kaon multiplicities is repeated. The results are consistent with leading-order predictions within the uncertainties in the input data, and do not inva…
We calculate the masses of the resonances D_{s0}^*(2317) and D_{s1}(2460) as well as their bottom partners as bound states of a kaon and a D^*- and B^*-meson, respectively, in unitarized chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. After fixing the parameters in the D_{s0}^*(2317) channel, the calculated mass for the D_{s1}(2460) is found in excellent agreement with experiment. The masses for the analogous states with a bottom quark are predicted to be M_{B^*_{s0}}=(5696\pm 40) MeV and M_{B_{s1}}=(5742\pm 40) MeV in reasonable agreement with previous analyses. In particular, we predict…
In the first part of the talk, I review what we know (or rather do not know) about the structure of the QCD vacuum in the presence of strange quarks. Chiral perturbation theory allows to study reactions of pions and kaons and to further sharpen our understanding of symmetry violation in QCD. I review recent progress on the description of pion-kaon scattering, in particular concerning isospin violation and the extraction of threshold and resonance parameters from Roy-Steiner equations. In the third part, it is shown how a unitary extension of chiral perturbation theory leads to novel insight in…
We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factors in lattice QCD with three flavors of dynamical overlap quarks. Gauge ensembles are generated at pion masses as low as 290 MeV and at a strange quark mass near its physical value. We precisely calculate relevant meson correlators using the all-to-all quark propagator. Twisted boundary conditions and the reweighting technique are employed to vary the momentum transfer and the strange quark mass. We discuss the chiral behavior of the form factors by comparing with chiral perturbation theory and experiments.
The electromagnetic form factors of strange mesons and baryons are studied by means of kaon electroproduction on the nucleon. The response functions that are sensitive to the K0, Lambda, Sigma, and KK*γtransition form factors are systematically explored. The effects of these form factors on several response functions are discussed.
Combining the recent experimental indications of density dependence in the pion decay constant $f_π^\star$ and the $ω$ meson mass $m_ω^\star$ and the discovery of $S^0 (3115)$ and other "strange nuggets" with the vector manifestation of chiral symmetry in hidden local symmetry proposed by Harada and Yamawaki, we show that the mechanism responsible for dense strangeness nuggets can be related to that responsible for kaon condensation in neutron-star matter. We suggest that this relation assures kaon condensation at a density $\sim$ three times nuclear matter density which supports the Brown-Bet…
The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model provides a sound framework for calculating the fragmentation functions in an effective chiral quark theory, where the momentum and isospin sum rules are satisfied without the introduction of ad hoc parameters. Earlier studies of the pion fragmentation functions using the NJL model within this framework showed qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations. Here we extend the NJL-Jet model by including the strange quark. The corrections to the pion fragmentation functions and corresponding kaon fragmentation functions are calculated using th…
We determine the mass of the charm quark ($m_c$) from lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks with a mass around the strange quark. We compare this to a determination in quenched QCD which has the same lattice spacing (0.1 fm). We investigate different formulations of the quark mass, based on the Vector Ward Identity, PCAC relation and the FNAL heavy quark formalism. Based on these preliminary results we find no effects due to sea quarks with a mass around strange.
We study pion and kaon condensation using three-flavor chiral perturbation theory at finite isospin and strangeness quark chemical potentials μI and μS . The phase diagram consists of a vacuum phase and three distinct Bose condensed phases with condensates of charged pions as well as charged and neutral kaons. Adding electromagnetic interactions, a phase with a charged condensate becomes a Higgs phase and the resulting phase diagram is modified due to the electromagnetic mass splittings of the mesons. The results for the pion-condensed phase are applied to calculate mass-radius relation of pio…
We make predictions for the kaon interferometry measurements in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). A first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) to a gas of hadrons is assumed for the transport calculations. The fraction of kaons that are directly emitted from the phase boundary is considerably enhanced at large transverse momenta K_T ~ 1 GeV/c. In this kinematic region, the sensitivity of the R_out/R_side ratio to the QGP-properties is enlarged. Here, the results of the 1-dimensional correlation analysis are presented. The extracted in…
We consider three-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) at zero temperature and nonzero isospin ($μ_{I}$) and strange ($μ_{S}$) chemical potentials. The effective potential is calculated to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the $π^{\pm}$-condensed phase, the $K^{\pm}$-condensed phase, and the $K^0/\bar{K}^0$-condensed phase. It is shown that the transitions from the vacuum phase to these phases are second order and take place when, $|μ_I|=m_π$, $|{1\over2}μ_I+μ_S|=m_K$, and $|-{1\over2}μ_I+μ_S|=m_K$, respectively at tree level and remains unchanged at NLO. The transition between the two conde…
In this work we present an attempt to describe the $X_1(2900)$ found by the LHCb collaboration, in the experimental data on the invariant mass spectrum of $ D^-K^+$, as a three-meson molecular state of the $Kρ\bar D$ system. We discuss that the interactions in all the subsystems are attractive in nature, with the $ρ\bar D$ interaction generating $\bar D_1(2420)$ and the $K ρ$ resonating as $K_1(1270)$. We find that the system can form a three-body state but with a mass higher than that of $X_1(2900)$. We investigate the $K ρD$ system too, finding that the three-body dynamics generates an isosc…
