In this note several formulae that follow from W. Israel's thin shell equation of motion are derived. We review the main results of Israel's seminal papers. The Israel equation of motion is solved for the three regimes of total energy E<0, E=0, and E>0. This family of solutions is analogous to the three classes of solutions of the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi equations. We also derive the constraint that the gravitational mass is always positive. The main result of this note is the expression for the interior and exterior metrics in terms of proper time on the shell. In these coordinates the time dilation formula is readily derived. We also derive the time dilation formula by direct geometric analysis. In particular we show that there is a differential time dilation of clocks at rest inside the cavity and at rest just outside the cavity.
We compute the second-order density fluctuation in the proper-time hypersurface of non-relativistic matter flows and relate it to the galaxy number density fluctuation in general relativity. At the linear order, it is equivalent to the density fluctuation in the comoving synchronous gauge, in which two separate gauge conditions coincide. However, at the second order, the density fluctuations in these gauge conditions differ, while both gauge conditions represent the proper-time hypersurface. Compared to the density fluctuation in the temporal comoving and the spatial C-gauge conditions, the de…
A hypersurface composed of two null sheets, or "light fronts", swept out by the two congruences of future null normal geodesics emerging from a spacelike 2-disk can serve as a Cauchy surface for a region of spacetime. Already in the 1960s free (unconstrained) initial data for vacuum general relativity were found for hypersurfaces of this type. Here the Poisson brackets of such free initial data are calculated from the Hilbert action. The brackets obtained can form the starting point for a constraint free canonical quantization of general relativity and may be relevant to holographic entropy bo…
We investigate the variational principle for the gravitational field in the presence of thin shells of completely unconstrained signature (generic shells). Such variational formulations have been given before for shells of timelike and null signatures separately, but so far no unified treatment exists. We identify the shell equation as the natural boundary condition associated with a broken extremal problem along a hypersurface where the metric tensor is allowed to be nondifferentiable. Since the second order nature of the Einstein-Hilbert action makes the boundary value problem associated wit…
A couple of technicalities in the paper M. Bojowald, G. Paily, Phys. Rev. D 87, 044044 (2013) are discussed. The explicit formula given there for the function entering the modified hypersurface-deformed algebra, which presumably originates in loop quantum gravity, seems to be oversimplified, and the embedding of deformed special relativity in deformed general relativity proposed there for spherically symmetric models raises some questions as well.
In this article, we review and discuss different aspects of stability and genericity of some properties of space-times which occur in various contexts in the General Theory of Relativity. We also give argument supporting the conclusion that Linearization Stability is a generic property if we restrict space-times to the class of those which admit compact spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.
We revisit Winicour's affine-null metric initial value formulation of General Relativity, where the characteristic initial value formulation is set up with a null metric having two affine parameters. In comparison to past work, where the application of the formulation was aimed for the timelike-null initial value problem, we consider here a boundary surface that is a null hypersurface. All of the initial data are either metric functions or first derivatives of the metric. Given such a set of initial data, Einstein equations can be integrated in a hierarchical manner, where first a set of equat…
In this paper we study the spacelike-characteristic Cauchy problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We prove that given initial data on a maximal compact spacelike hypersurface $Σ\simeq \overline{B(0,1)} \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ and the outgoing null hypersurface $\mathcal{H}$ emanating from $\partial Σ$, the time of existence of a solution to the Einstein vacuum equations is controlled by low regularity bounds on the initial data at the level of curvature in $L^2$. The proof uses the bounded $L^2$ curvature theorem by Klainerman, Szeftel and Rodnianski, the extension procedure for the constrai…
The U(1)$^3$ model for 3+1 Euclidian signature general relativity is an interacting, generally covariant field theory with two physical polarisations that shares many features of Lorentzian general relativity. In particular, it displays a non-trivial realisation of the hypersurface deformation algebroid with non-trivial, i.e. phase space dependent structure functions rather than structure constants. In this paper we show that the model admits {\it an exact quantisation}. The quantisation rests on the observation that for this model and in the chosen representation of the canonical commutation …
In papers on the history of general relativity and in personal remembrances of relativists, keywords like "renaissance" and "golden age" of general relativity have been used. We try to show that the first label rests on a weak empirical basis. The second one, while describing a period of vivid growth in research in general relativity, exaggerates the importance of this particular development.
Using the time evolution equations of (cosmological) General Relativity in the first order Fischer-Marsden form, we construct an integral that measures the amount of non-stationary energy on a given spacelike hypersurface in $D$ dimensions. The integral vanishes for stationary spacetimes; and with a further assumption, reduces to Dain's invariant on the boundary of the hypersurface which is defined with the Einstein constraints and a fourth order equation defining approximate Killing symmetries.
General hypersurfaces of any causal character can be studied abstractly using the hypersurface data formalism. In the null case, we write down all tangential components of the ambient Ricci tensor in terms of the abstract data. Using this formalism, we formulate and solve in a completely abstract way the characteristic Cauchy problem of the Einstein vacuum field equations. The initial data is detached from any spacetime notion, and it is fully diffeomorphism and gauge covariant. The results of this paper put the characteristic problem on a similar footing as the standard Cauchy problem in Gene…
A future holographic screen is a hypersurface of indefinite signature, foliated by marginally trapped surfaces with area $A(r)$. We prove that $A(r)$ grows strictly monotonically. Future holographic screens arise in gravitational collapse. Past holographic screens exist in our own universe; they obey an analogous area law. Both exist more broadly than event horizons or dynamical horizons. Working within classical General Relativity, we assume the null curvature condition and certain generiticity conditions. We establish several nontrivial intermediate results. If a surface $σ$ divides a Cauchy…
In this paper we consider singular timelike spherical hypersurfaces embedded in a $D$-dimensional spherically symmetric bulk spacetime which is an electrovacuum solution of Einstein equations with cosmological constant. We analyse the different possibilities regarding the orientation of the gradient of the standard $r$ coordinate in relation to the shell. Then we study the dynamics according to Einstein equations for arbitrary matter satisfying the dominant energy condition. In particular, we thoroughly analyse the asymptotic dynamics for both the small and large-shell-radius limits. We also s…
Spacetime is foliated by spatial hypersurfaces in the 3+1 split of General Relativity. The initial value problem then consists of specifying initial data for all relevant fields on one such a spatial hypersurface. These fields are the 3-metric and extrinsic curvature together with matter fields such as fluid velocity, energy density and rest mass density. There is a lot of freedom in choosing such initial data. This freedom corresponds to the physical state of the system at the initial time. At the same time the initial data have to satisfy the Hamiltonian and momentum constraint equations of …
The geometry of the Sagnac effect in a stationary region of a spacetime is reviewed with the aim of emphasizing the role of asymmetry of a Finsler metric defined on a spacelike hypersurface associated to a stationary splitting and related to future-pointing null geodesics of the spacetime. We show also that an analogous asymmetry comes into play in the Sagnac effect for timelike geodesics.
Varying the gravitational Lagrangian produces a boundary contribution that has various physical applications. It determines the right boundary terms to be added to the action once boundary conditions are specified, and defines the symplectic structure of covariant phase space methods. We study general boundary variations using tetrads instead of the metric. This choice streamlines many calculations, especially in the case of null hypersurfaces with arbitrary coordinates, where we show that the spin-1 momentum coincides with the rotational 1-form of isolated horizons. The additional gauge symme…
