The ultrastrong coupling of single-electron tunneling and nanomechanical motion opens exciting opportunities to explore fundamental questions and develop new platforms for quantum technologies. We have measured and modeled this electromechanical coupling in a fully-suspended carbon nanotube device and report a ratio of $g_\mathrm{m}/ω_\mathrm{m} = 2.72 \pm 0.14$, where $g_\mathrm{m}/2π= 0.80\pm 0.04$ GHz is the coupling strength and $ω_\mathrm{m}/2π=294.5$ MHz is the mechanical resonance frequency. This is well within the ultrastrong coupling regime and the highest among all other electromechanical platforms. We show that, although this regime was present in similar fully-suspended carbon nanotube devices, it went unnoticed. Even higher ratios could be achieved with improvement on device design.
We propose a scheme for controlling a radio-frequency mechanical resonator at the quantum level using a superconducting qubit. The mechanical part of the circuit consists of a suspended micrometer-long beam that is embedded in the loop of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and is connected in parallel to a transmon qubit. Using realistic parameters from recent experiments with similar devices, we show that this configuration can enable a tuneable optomechanical interaction in the single-photon ultrastrong-coupling regime, where the radiation-pressure coupling strength is lar…
We develop a rigorous theoretical framework for interaction-induced phenomena in the waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) driven by mechanical oscillations of the qubits. Specifically, we predict that the simplest set-up of two qubits, harmonically trapped over an optical waveguide, enables the ultrastrong coupling regime of the quantum optomechanical interaction. Moreover, the combination of the inherent open nature of the system and the strong optomechanical coupling leads to emerging parity-time (\PT) symmetry, quite unexpected for a purely quantum system without artificially engineered …
The ultrastrong coupling of (quasi-)particles has gained considerable attention due to its application potential and richness of the underlying physics. Coupling phenomena arising due to electromagnetic interactions are well explored. In magnetically ordered systems, the quantum-mechanical exchange-interaction should furthermore enable a fundamentally different coupling mechanism. Here, we report the observation of ultrastrong intralayer exchange-enhanced magnon-magnon coupling in a compensated ferrimagnet. We experimentally study the spin dynamics in a gadolinium iron garnet single crystal us…
We present a hybrid quantum system composed of a magnetic vortex and a nanomechanical resonator. We show that the gyrotropic mode of the vortex can coherently couple to the quantized mechanical motion of the resonator through magnetic interaction. Benefiting from the topologically protected properties and the low damping of vortices, as well as the excellent coherent features of nanomechanical resonators, the proposed system can achieve strong coupling and even the ultrastrong coupling regime by choosing appropriate parameters. In combination with other quantum systems, such as a nitrogen-vaca…
We propose a scheme for enhancing the optomechanical coupling between microwave and mechanical resonators by up to seven orders of magnitude to the ultrastrong coupling limit in a circuit optomechanical setting. The tripartite system considered here consists of a Josephson junction Cooper-pair box that mediates the coupling between the microwave cavity and the mechanical resonator. The optomechanical coupling can be modified by tuning the gate charge and the magnetic flux bias of the Cooper-pair box which in turn affect the Josephson capacitance of the Cooper-pair box. We additionally show tha…
In single electron tunneling through clean, suspended carbon nanotube devices at low temperature, distinct switching phenomena have regularly been observed. These can be explained via strong interaction of single electron tunneling and vibrational motion of the nanotube. We present measurements on a highly stable nanotube device, subsequently recorded in the vacuum chamber of a dilution refrigerator and immersed in the 3He/4He mixture of a second dilution refrigerator. The switching phenomena are absent when the sample is kept in the viscous liquid, additionally supporting the interpretation o…
Hybrid spin-mechanical setups offer a versatile platform for quantum science and technology, but improving the spin-phonon as well as the spin-spin couplings of such systems remains a crucial challenge. Here, we propose and analyze an experimentally feasible and simple method for exponentially enhancing the spin-phonon, and the phonon-mediated spin-spin interactions in a hybrid spin-mechanical setup, using only \emph{ linear resources}. Through modulating the spring constant of the mechanical cantilever with a time-dependent pump, we can acquire a tunable and nonlinear (two-phonon) drive to th…
We experimentally explore the phenomenon of electron tunneling across a modulated tunneling barrier which is created between an STM tip and an Au film deposited on a vibrating piezo surface. Measurements of the time series of the quantum mechanical tunneling current across the modulating barrier show large fluctuations. Analysis of the average work done in establishing tunneling current in finite time interval shows a distribution of both positive and negative work events. The negative work events suggest tunneling against the bias voltage direction. We show that these distributions obey the G…
Magnetic skyrmions are nano-scale magnetic states that could be used in various spintronics devices. A central issue is the mechanism and rate of various possible annihilation processes and the lifetime of metastable skyrmions. While most studies have focused on classical over-the-barrier mechanism for annihilation, it is also possible that quantum mechanical tunneling through the energy barrier takes place. Calculations of the lifetime of magnetic skyrmions in a two-dimensional lattice are presented and the rate of tunneling compared with the classical annihilation rate. A remarkably strong v…
We investigate superconducting interference device (SQUID) with two asymmetric Josephson junctions coupled to a mechanical resonator embedded in the loop of the SQUID. We quantize this system in the case when the frequency of the mechanical resonator is much lower than the cavity frequency of the SQUID and in the case when they are comparable. In the first case, the radiation pressure and cross-Kerr type interactions arise and are modified by asymmetry. Cross-Kerr type coupling is the leading term at the extremum points where radiation pressure is zero. In the second case, the main interaction…
A quantum effect at ambient conditions is presented. A benzene dithiol (BDT) molecule or a tetrahydrofuran (THF) molecule is used as a barrier molecule bridging the gold electrodes from a Mechanically Controllable Break junction. It has been known for a long time that the environment of a junction couples to the conduction. With a microscopic layer of fluid it is actually possible to influence this coupling. The electrode-molecule-electrode configuration is lined with a microscopic layer of THF fluid, also known as the partially wet phase. This is effectively decoupling the electrode-molecule-…
We predict and analyze mechanical instability and corresponding self-sustained mechanical oscillations occurring in a nanoelectromechanical system composed of a metallic carbon nanotube (CNT) suspended between two superconducting leads and coupled to a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. We show that such phenomena are realized in the presence of both the coherent Andreev tunneling between the CNT and superconducting leads, and an incoherent single electron tunneling between the voltage biased STM tip and CNT. Treating the CNT as a single-level quantum dot, we demonstrate that the mechani…

Mechanical oscillators have been demonstrated with very high quality factors over a wide range of frequencies. These also couple to a wide variety of fields and forces, making them ideal as sensors. The realization of a mechanically-based quantum bit could therefore provide an important new platform for quantum computation and sensing. Here we show that by coupling one of the flexural modes of a suspended carbon nanotube to the charge states of a double quantum dot defined in the nanotube, it is possible to induce sufficient anharmonicity in the mechanical oscillator so that the coupled system…
We show that the conductance $G$ of molecular tunnel junctions wherein the charge transport is dominated by a single energy level can be expressed in closed analytic form which is exact and valid at arbitrary temperature $T$ and model parameter values. On this basis, we show that the single-step tunneling mechanism is compatible with a continuous thermal transition from a weakly $T$-dependent $G$ at low $T$ (Sommerfeld regime) to a nearly exponential $1/T$-dependent $G$ at high $T$ (Arrhenius-like regime). We predict that this Sommerfeld-Arrhenius transition can be observed in real molecular j…
While the effects of lattice mismatch-induced strain, mechanical strain, as well as the intrinsic strain of thin films are sometimes detrimental, resulting in mechanical deformation and failure, strain can also be usefully harnessed for applications such as data storage, transistors, solar cells, and strain gauges, among other things. Here, we demonstrate that quantum transport across magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) can be significantly affected by the introduction of controllable mechanical strain, achieving an enhancement factor of ~2 in the experimental tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ra…
A technique to locally generate mechanical vibrations in freestanding graphene using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is presented. The frequency of the mechanical vibrations is tuned over nearly four decades and is centered around 10 Hz. The amplitude of the vibrations also changes over nearly three decades centered on 1 nm. The oscillating motion is generated in two ways: first, by scanning the STM tip on the surface and second, by scanning the bias voltage on the STM tip. The frequency and amplitude of the displaced freestanding graphene is quantitatively transformed to the frequency and…
We study the interconversion between photons and phonons coupled via radiation pressure in artificial Dirac materials realized by a honeycomb array of optomechanical cells. In particular we analyze the chiral tunneling of (photon-phonon) polaritons through an oscillating planar barrier. While a static barrier accommodates constructively interfering optical or mechanical waves leading to photon or phonon transmission, an oscillating barrier allows for inelastic scattering that causes sideband excitations and interference effects which, in turn, may suppress or revive the light-sound interconver…
We predict a new mechanism of surface plasmon amplification in graphene-insulator-graphene van der Waals heterostructures. The amplification occurs upon the stimulated interlayer electron tunneling accompanied by the emission of a coherent plasmon. The quantum-mechanical calculations of the non-local high-frequency tunnel conductivity show that a relative smallness of the tunneling exponent can be compensated by a strong resonance due to the enhanced tunneling between electron states with collinear momenta in the neighboring graphene layers. With the optimal selection of the barrier layer, the…
