We introduce a shell model of turbulence featuring intermittent behaviour with anomalous power-law scaling of structure functions. This model is solved analytically with the explicit derivation of anomalous exponents. The solution associates the intermittency with the hidden symmetry for Kolmogorov multipliers, making our approach relevant for real turbulence.
Synthetic turbulence models are a useful tool that provide realistic representations of turbulence, necessary to test theoretical results, to serve as background fields in some numerical simulations, and to test analysis tools. Models of 1D and 3D synthetic turbulence previously developed still required large computational resources. A new wavelet-based model of synthetic turbulence, able to produce a field with tunable spectral law, intermittency and anisotropy, is presented here. The rapid algorithm introduced, based on the classic $p$-model of intermittent turbulence, allows to reach a broa…
It is known that scale invariance is broken in the developed hydrodynamic turbulence due to intermittency, substantiating complexity of turbulent flows. Here we challenge the concept of broken scale invariance by establishing a hidden self-similarity in intermittent turbulence. Using a simplified (shell) model, we derive a nonlinear spatiotemporal scaling symmetry of inviscid equations, which are reformulated in terms of intrinsic times introduced at different scales of motion. Numerical analysis persuasively confirms that this symmetry is restored in a statistical sense within the inertial in…

Superfluid flow around an oscillating microsphere is investigated at temperatures down to 25 mK. Stable laminar flow below a critical velocity and turbulence at large drives are found to be separated below 0.5 K by an intermediate range of driving forces where the flow is unstable, intermittently switching between laminar and turbulent phases. We have recorded time series of this switching phenomenon and have made a statistical analysis of the switching probability. The mean lifetime of the turbulent phases grows with increasing drive and becomes infinite at a critical value. Stability of the …

We have found that in two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow a single spatially-localized turbulence (SLT) exists stably and travels with a constant speed on average switching the moving direction randomly and intermittently for moderate values of control parameters: Reynolds number and the flow rate. We define the coarse-grained position and velocity of an SLT and separate the motion of the SLT from its internal turbulent dynamics by introducing a co-moving frame. The switching process of an SLT represented by the coarse-grained velocity seems to be a random telegraph signal. Focusing on the asymmet…
Turbulence is ubiquitous in plasmas, leading to rich dynamics characterized by irregularity, irreversibility, energy fluctuations across many scales, and energy transfer across many scales. Another fundamental and generic feature of turbulence, although sometimes overlooked, is the inhomogeneous dissipation of energy in space and in time. This is a consequence of intermittency, the scale-dependent inhomogeneity of dynamics caused by fluctuations in the turbulent cascade. Intermittency causes turbulent plasmas to self-organize into coherent dissipative structures, which may govern heating, diff…
Thermal plumes are the energy containing eddy motions that carry heat and momentum in a convective boundary layer. The detailed understanding of their structure is of fundamental interest for a range of applications, from wall-bounded engineering flows to quantifying surface-atmosphere flux exchanges. We address the aspect of Reynolds stress anisotropy associated with the intermittent nature of heat transport in thermal plumes by performing an invariant analysis of the Reynolds stress tensor in an unstable atmospheric surface layer flow, using a field-experimental dataset. Given the intermitte…
The turbulence statistics of the intermittent region in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer are studied by direct numerical simulation. Recently, Kwon et al. (2016) have shown that this intermittent behavior, consisting of the coexistence of turbulent and non-turbulent flows separated by an interface, could result in perils when the traditional Reynolds decomposition is used to analyze data. Here, we extend the study of turbulent/non-turbulent interfaces to the supersonic regime and report turbulence statistics conditioned to the interface. We show that the mathematical artefact of the tradi…
The scaling of the longitudinal velocity structure functions, $S_q(r) = < | δu (r) |^q > \sim r^{ζ_q}$, is analyzed up to order $q=8$ in a decaying rotating turbulence experiment from a large Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) dataset. The exponent of the second-order structure function, $ζ_2$, increases throughout the self-similar decay regime, up to the Ekman time scale. The normalized higher-order exponents, $ζ_q / ζ_2$, are close to those of the intermittent non-rotating case at small times, but show a marked departure at larger times, on a time scale $Ω^{-1}$ ($Ω$ is the rotation rate), alt…

The intermittent small-scale structure of turbulence governs energy dissipation in many astrophysical plasmas and is often believed to have universal properties for sufficiently large systems. In this work, we argue that small-scale turbulence in accretion disks is universal in the sense that it is insensitive to the magnetorotational instability (MRI) and background shear, and therefore indistinguishable from standard homogeneous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence at small scales. We investigate the intermittency of current density, vorticity, and energy dissipation in numerical simulations…
Statistical properties of the Sun's photospheric turbulent magnetic field, especially those of the Active Regions (ARs), have been studied using the line-of-sight data from magnetograms taken by SOHO and several other instruments (see e.g. Abramenko et al (2002, 2003),Abramenko and Yurchyshyn (2010)). This includes structure functions and their exponents, flatness curves and correlation functions. In these works, the dependence of structure function exponents ($ζ_p$) of the order of the structure functions ($\it{p}$) was modeled using a non-intermittent K41 model. It is now well known that the…
We study steady vortex sheet solutions of the Navier-Stokes in the limit of vanishing viscosity at fixed energy flow. We refer to this as the turbulent limit. These steady flows correspond to a minimum of the Euler Hamiltonian as a functional of the tangent discontinuity of the local velocity parametrized as $Δ\vec v_t =\vec \nabla Γ$. This observation means that the steady flow represents the low-temperature limit of the Gibbs distribution for vortex sheet dynamics. The normal displacement $δr_\perp$ of the vortex sheet as a Hamiltonian coordinate and $Γ$ as a conjugate momentum. An infinite …
Inertial-range features of turbulence are investigated using data from experimental measurements of grid turbulence and direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence simulated in a periodic box, both at the Taylor-scale Reynolds number $R_λ\sim 1000$. In particular, oscillations modulating the power-law scaling in the inertial range are examined for structure functions up to sixth order moments. The oscillations in exponent ratios decrease with increasing sample size in simulations though, in experiments, they survive at a low value of $4$ parts in $1000$ even after massive averaging. T…
The characterization of heat and momentum fluxes in wall-bounded turbulence is of paramount importance for a plethora of applications, ranging from engineering to Earth sciences. However, how the turbulent structures associated with velocity and temperature fluctuations interact to produce the emergent flux signatures, is not evident till date. In this work, we investigate this fundamental issue by studying the switching patterns of intermittently occurring turbulent fluctuations from one state to another, a phenomenon called persistence. We discover that the persistence patterns for heat and …
We present a model describing evolution of the small-scale Navier-Stokes turbulence due to its stochastic distortions by much larger turbulent scales. This study is motivated by numerical findings (laval, 2001) that such interactions of separated scales play important role in turbulence intermittency. We introduce description of turbulence in terms of the moments of the k-space quantities using a method previously developed for the kinematic dynamo problem (Nazarenko, 2003). Working with the $k$-space moments allows to introduce new useful measures of intermittency such as the mean polarizatio…
