Security is of critical importance for the Internet of Things (IoT). Many IoT devices are resource-constrained, calling for lightweight security protocols. Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) leverage integrated circuits' variations to produce responses unique for individual devices, and hence are not reproducible even by the manufacturers. Implementable with simplistic circuits of thousands of transistors and operable with low energy, Physical unclonable functions are promising candidates as security primitives for resource-constrained IoT devices. Arbiter PUFs (APUFs) are a group of delay-based PUFs which are highly lightweight in resource requirements but suffer from high susceptibility to machine learning attacks. To defend APUF variants against machine learning attacks, we introduce challenge input interface, which incurs low resource overhead. With the interface, experimental attack study shows that all tested PUFs have substantially improved their resistance against machine learning attacks, rendering interfaced APUF variants promising candidates for security critical applications.
This paper proposes a 3-input arbiter-based novel physically unclonable function (PUF) design. Firstly, a 3-input priority arbiter is designed using a simple arbiter, two multiplexers (2:1), and an XOR logic gate. The priority arbiter has an equal probability of 0's and 1's at the output, which results in excellent uniformity (49.45%) while retrieving the PUF response. Secondly, a new PUF design based on priority arbiter PUF (PA-PUF) is presented. The PA-PUF design is evaluated for uniqueness, non-linearity, and uniformity against the standard tests. The proposed PA-PUF design is configurable …
We present a practical and highly secure method for the authentication of chips based on a new concept for implementing strong Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). Its qualitatively novel feature is a remote reconfiguration in which the delay stages of the PUF are arranged to a random pattern within a subset of the FPGA's gates. Before the reconfiguration is performed during authentication the PUF simply does not exist. Hence even if an attacker has the chip under control previously she can gain no useful information about the PUF. This feature, together…
With the expansion of the Internet of Things industry, the information security of Internet of Things devices attracts much attention. Traditional encryption algorithms require sensitive information such as keys to be stored in memory, and also need the support of operating system, which is obviously unacceptable for resource-constrained Internet of Things terminals. Physical not cloning function by extracting the chip is inevitable in the process of manufacturing process deviation, the introduction of the corresponding function relationship between incentive and response, not to need the stor…
We propose Schmitt-Trigger (ST) based recycling sensor that are tailored to amplify the aging mechanisms and detect fine grained recycling (minutes to seconds). We exploit the susceptibility of ST to process variations to realize high-quality arbiter PUF. Conventional SRAM PUF suffer from environmental fluctuation-induced bit flipping. We propose 8T SRAM PUF with a back-to-back PMOS latch to improve robustness by 4X. We also propose a low-power 7T SRAM with embedded Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ) devices to enhance the robustness (2.3X to 20X).
This paper presents the PUF finite state machine (PUF-FSM) that is served as a practical {\it controlled} strong PUF. Previous controlled PUF designs have the difficulties of stabilizing the noisy PUF responses where the error correction logic is required. In addition, the computed helper data to assist error correcting, however, leaks information, which poses the controlled PUF under the threatens of fault attacks or reliability-based attacks. The PUF-FSM eschews the error correction logic and the computation, storage and loading of the helper data on-chip by only employing error-free respons…
Physically Unclonable Function (PUF) circuits are finding widespread use due to increasing adoption of IoT devices. However, the existing strong PUFs such as Arbiter PUFs (APUF) and its compositions are susceptible to machine learning (ML) attacks because the challenge-response pairs have a linear relationship. In this paper, we present a Recurrent-Neural-Network PUF (RNN-PUF) which uses a combination of feedback and XOR function to significantly improve resistance to ML attack, without significant reduction in the reliability. ML attack is also partly reduced by using a shared comparator with…
Physical unclonable functions (PUF) extract secrets from randomness inherent in manufacturing processes. PUFs are utilized for basic cryptographic tasks such as authentication and key generation, and more recently, to realize key exchange and bit commitment requiring a large number of error free responses from a strong PUF. We propose an approach to eliminate the need to implement expensive on-chip error correction logic implementation and the associated helper data storage to reconcile naturally noisy PUF responses. In particular, we exploit a statistical model of an Arbiter PUF (APUF) constr…

Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are promising security primitives for resource-constrained network nodes. The XOR Arbiter PUF (XOR PUF or XPUF) is an intensively studied PUF invented to improve the security of the Arbiter PUF, probably the most lightweight delay-based PUF. Recently, highly powerful machine learning attack methods were discovered and were able to easily break large-sized XPUFs, which were highly secure against earlier machine learning attack methods. Component-differentially-challenged XPUFs (CDC-XPUFs) are XPUFs with different component PUFs receiving different challenges…
Physical unclonable functions (PUFs), as hardware security primitives, exploit manufacturing randomness to extract hardware instance-specific secrets. One of most popular structures is time-delay based Arbiter PUF attributing to large number of challenge response pairs (CRPs) yielded and its compact realization. However, modeling building attacks threaten most variants of APUFs that are usually employed for strong PUF-oriented application---lightweight authentication---without reliance on the securely stored digital secrets based standard cryptographic protocols. In this paper, we investigate …
We propose a secure and lightweight key based challenge obfuscation for strong PUFs. Our architecture is designed to be resilient against learning attacks. Our obfuscation mechanism uses non-linear feedback shift registers (NLFSRs). Responses are directly provided to the user, without error correction or extra post-processing steps. We also discuss the cost of protecting our architecture against power analysis attacks with clock randomization, and Boolean masking. Security against learning attacks is assessed using avalanche criterion, and deep-neural network attacks. We designed a testchip in…
This paper deals with study of the physical unclonable functions and specifically the design of arbiter based PUF (APUF) and extends the work on different types of attacks on the PUF designs to break the security of the device, which includes advanced computational algorithms. Machine learning (ML) based attacks are successful in attacking existing designs. So in this, the resistance of the modified, proposed design of APUF is examined by modelling the attack based on the logistic regression a MLbased algorithm. The design is validated on Basys-3 Artix -7 FPGA board with a part number (xc7a35t…
Strong physical unclonable function (PUF) is a promising solution for device authentication in resourceconstrained applications but vulnerable to machine learning attacks. In order to resist such attack, many defenses have been proposed in recent years. However, these defenses incur high hardware overhead, degenerate reliability and are inefficient against advanced machine learning attacks such as approximation attacks. In order to address these issues, we propose a Random Set-based Obfuscation (RSO) for Strong PUFs to resist machine learning attacks. The basic idea is that several stable resp…
As a well-known physical unclonable function that can provide huge number of challenge response pairs (CRP) with a compact design and fully compatibility with current electronic fabrication process, the arbiter PUF (APUF) has attracted great attention. To improve its resilience against modeling attacks, many APUF variants have been proposed so far. Though the modeling resilience of response obfuscated APUF variants such as XOR-APUF and lightweight secure APUF (LSPUF) have been well studied, the challenge obfuscated APUFs (CO-APUFs) such as feed-forward APUF (FF-APUF), and XOR-FF-APUF are less …
