The high solubility of oxygen in Ti, Zr and Hf makes it difficult to stabilize the protective oxide scales on their surfaces as the subsurface regions can serve as boundless sinks that continuously dissolve oxygen. Alloying elements are crucial to reduce the oxygen solubility and diffusivity within early transition metals. Past studies have shown that substitutional alloying additions to titanium repel interstitial oxygen. Here we use first-principles calculations to show that this repulsion is short ranged and identify a variety of factors that are likely responsible for the repulsive interaction. We identify a unique hybridization phenomenon between dissolved substitutional elements and interstitial oxygen within hcp Ti that leads to a repulsive interaction at short distances, similar to that between closed-shell atoms. Calculations of Bader charges also suggest the existence of short-range Coulomb interactions due to the accumulation of charge on the substitutional solute and interstitial oxygen that is drawn from the Ti host.
By means of first-principles calculations coupled with the kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we have systematically investigated the effects of dilute substitutional solutes on the behaviors of carbon in $α$-Fe. Our results uncover that: ($i$) Without the Fe vacancy the interactions between most solutes and carbon are repulsive due to the strain relief, whereas Mn has a weak attractive interaction with its nearest-neighbor carbon due to the local ferromagnetic coupling effect. ($ii$) The presence of the Fe vacancy results in attractive interactions of all the solutes with carbon. In particular,…
The liquid-solid diffusion couple technique, supported by phenomenological analysis and nano-indentation tests, is proposed on account of the relatively low melting points of Mg to explore the diffusion mobility and creep deformation. The potential of this strategy is demonstrated in Mg-Ga hcp alloys where Ga solute (i.e. impurity) and Mg solvent diffusions in hcp Mg-Ga alloys were both unveiled. It was followed by mapping the compressive creep behavior via nanoindentation along the composition arrays within the same Mg-Ga couple sample. The compressive creep resistance of Mg-Ga hcp alloys inc…
The interactions between solute atoms and crystalline defects such as vacancies, dislocations, and grain boundaries play an essential role in determining physical, chemical and mechanical properties of solid-solution alloys. Here we present a universal correlation between two electronic factors and the solute-defect interaction energies in binary alloys of body-centered-cubic (bcc) refractory metals (such as W and Ta) with transition-metal substitutional solutes. One electronic factor is the bimodality of the d-orbital local density of states for a matrix atom at the substitutional site, and t…
A thermodynamic model based on the law of mass action is used to calculate concentrations of elementary point defects and to determine site preferences of solute atoms in ordered alloys. Combinations of lattice vacancies, antisite atoms and host interstitials that form equilibrium defects are enumerated for the CsCl (B2) and Ni2Al3 structures. For CsCl, in addition to the two substitutional sites, a distorted tetrahedral interstitial site is considered. For Ni2Al3, the Ni site, two distinct Al sites and a vacant, insterstitial-type Ni-site are considered. An equation of constraint among concen…
Nucleation and growth of Ti$_3$Al \textalpha{}$_2$ ordered domains in \textalpha{}-Ti--Al--X alloys were characterised using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography and small angle X-ray scattering. Model alloys based on Ti--7Al~(wt.\%) and containing O, V and Mo were aged at \SI{550}{\celsius} for times up to \SI{120}{\day} and the resulting precipitate dispersions were observed at intermediate points. Precipitates grew to around \SI{30}{\nano\metre} in size, with a volume fraction of 6--10\% depending on tertiary solutes. Interstitial O was found to increase …
We investigate thermodynamic behaviors of dilute Mg-Zn-Y ternary alloys to form a unique solute-enriched stacking-fault (SESF), which is an intrinsic-II type stacking-fault (I2-SF) enriched by the Zn and Y atoms and represents the structural-unit of the long-period stacking/order (LPSO) phase. SESF in the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) Mg matrix forms a local face-centered-cubic (fcc) environment, and hence our thermodynamic analysis is based on the Gibbs energy comparison between hcp and fcc phases over the Mg-Zn-Y ternary composition ranges, using the calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) me…

The substitutional solute atom induced local lattice distortion (LLD) in dilute metal solid solution was believed to be uniform that may even be modeled by using soap bubble raft. Contrary to this conventional picture, we report in this manuscript that the Mo induced LLD in dilute Ti-Mo solid solution is highly non-uniform as evidenced by our first principles calculations. The non-uniform LLD is ascribed to the Jahn-Teller splitting of the degenerated d states of Mo atom. We propose that the substitutional solid solutions with non-uniform LLD should satisfy two conditions. With which, the soli…
The exceptional combination of strength and ductility in multi-component alloys is often attributed to the interaction of dislocations with the various solute atoms in the alloy. To study these effects on the mechanical properties of such alloys there is a need to develop a modeling framework capable of quantifying the effect of these solutes on the evolution of dislocation networks. Large scale three-dimensional (3D) Discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations can provide access to such studies but to date no relevant approaches are available that aim for a complete representation of real…
Impurity diffusion in Zr is potentially important for many applications of Zr alloys, and in particular for their use of nuclear reactor cladding. However, significant uncertainty presently exists about which elements are vacancy vs. interstitial diffusers, which can inhibit understanding and prediction of their behavior under different temperature, irradiation, and alloying conditions. Therefore, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been employed to predict the temperature-dependent dilute impurity diffusion coefficients for 14 substitutional alloying el…
The magnetic and electronic structures of $3d$ impurity atoms from Sc to Zn in ferromagnetic body-centered cubic iron are investigated using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We found that in general, the GGA results are closer to the experimental values than those of the local spin density approximation. The calculated formation enthalpy data indicate the importance of a systematic study on the ternary Fe-C-$X$ systems rather than the binary Fe-$X$ systems, in steel design. The lattice parameters are o…
A general set of methods is presented for calculating chemical potentials in solid and liquid mixtures using {\em ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory (DFT). The methods are designed to give an {\em ab initio} approach to treating chemical equilibrium between coexisting solid and liquid solutions, and particularly the partitioning ratio of solutes between such solutions. For the liquid phase, the methods are based on the general technique of thermodynamic integration, applied to calculate the change of free energy associated with the continuous interconversion of solvent an…
Within the framework of the lattice-statics and static fluctuation-wave methods, the available energies of strain-induced interaction of interstitial-interstitial, interstitial-substitutional and substitutional-substitutional impurity atomic pairs are collected and analysed for f.c.c.-(Ni,Fe)-C solutions allowing for discrete atomic structure of the host-crystal lattice. The lattice spacings, elasticity moduli and/or quasi-elastic force parameters of the host-crystal lattice, and concentration coefficients of the dilatation of solid-solution lattice due to the respective solutes are selected a…
