In a recent article we presented a model for hadronic rescattering, and some results were shown for pp collisions at LHC energies. In order to extend the studies to pA and AA collisions, the Angantyr model for heavy-ion collisions is taken as the starting point. Both these models are implemented within the general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator Pythia, which makes the matching reasonably straightforward, and allows for detailed studies of the full space--time evolution. The rescattering rate is significantly higher than in pp, especially for central AA collisions, where the typical primary hadron rescatters several times. We study the impact of rescattering on a number of distributions, such as pT and eta spectra, and the space--time evolution of the whole collision process. Notably rescattering is shown to give a significant contribution to elliptic flow in XeXe and PbPb, and to give a nontrivial impact on charm production.
A method for modelling the prompt production of molecular states using the hadronic rescattering framework of the general-purpose Pythia event generator is introduced. Production cross sections of possible exotic hadronic molecules via hadronic rescattering at the LHC are calculated for the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ resonance, a possible tetraquark state, as well as three possible pentaquark states, $P_c^+(4312)$, $P_c^+(4440)$, and $P_c^+(4457)$. For the $P_c^+$ states, the expected cross section from $Λ_b$ decays is compared to the hadronic-rescattering production. The $χ_{c1}(3872)$ cross section is c…
A kinematic model based on the superposition of p+p collisions, relativistic geometry and final-state hadronic rescattering is used to predict various hadronic observables in \surd sNN = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions. Predictions for rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, elliptic flow, and two-boson femtoscopy are presented. A short proper time for hadronization is assumed. Previous calculations using this model which were performed for \surd sNN = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions were shown to describe reasonably well the trends of observables in experiments carried out at that energy, giving t…
We study the effects of hadronic rescattering on hadron distributions in high-energy nuclear collisions by using an integrated dynamical approach. This approach is based on a hybrid model combining (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics for the quark gluon plasma (QGP), and a transport model for the hadron resonance gas. Since the hadron distributions are the result of the entire expansion history of the system, understanding the QGP properties requires investigating how rescattering during the hadronic stage affects the final distributions of hadrons. We include multistrange hadrons in our stu…
The $σ$ resonance was observed as a conspicuous $π^+π^-$ peak in hadronic decays like $J/ψ\to π^+π^-ω$ or $D^+\toπ^+π^-π^+$. The phase of the $σ\toπ^+π^-$ amplitude, extracted from production data within the conventional isobar model, is assumed to coincide with that in $ππ$ elastic scattering. We check the validity of this assumption by using Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) reduction and unitarity. The rescattering effects in the final three-particle states are shown to generate a correction to the phase given by a naive application of Watson theorem. We briefly discuss the implications of …
In this article, a framework for hadronic rescattering in the general-purpose Pythia event generator is introduced. The starting point is the recently presented space-time picture of the hadronization process. It is now extended with a tracing of the subsequent motion of the primary hadrons, including both subsequent scattering processes among them and decays of them. The major new component is cross-section parameterizations for a range of possible hadron-hadron combinations, applicable from threshold energies upwards. The production dynamics in these collisions has also been extended to cope…
The hadronic phase in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions has a large influence on final state observables like multiplicity, flow and $p_t$ spectra, as studied in the UrQMD approach. In this model one assumes that a non-equilibrium decoupling phase follows a fluid dynamical description of the high density phase. Hadrons are produced assuming local thermal equilibrium and dynamically decouple during the hadronic rescattering until the particles are registered in the detectors. This rescattering of hadrons modifies every hadronic bulk observable. The apparent multiplicity of resonances is supp…
We study effects of the hadronic rescattering on final observables especially for multi-strange hadrons such as $ϕ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ in high-energy heavy-ion collisions within an integrated dynamical approach. In this approach, (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics is combined with a microscopic transport model, JAM. We simulate the collisions with or without hadronic rescatterings and compare observables between these two options so that we quantify the effects of the hadronic rescattering. We find that the mean transverse momentum and the elliptic flow parameter of multi-strange hadrons are less…
The average number of minijets and the corresponding transverse energy produced in heavy ion collisions are evaluated by including explicitly semi-hard parton rescatterings in the dynamics of the interaction. At the LHC semi-hard rescatterings have a sizable effect on global characteristics of the typical inelastic event. An interesting feature is that the dependence on the cutoff which separates soft and hard parton interactions becomes less critical after taking rescatterings into account.
Hadronic resonance propagators which take into account the analytical properties of decay processes are built in terms of the dispersion relation technique. Such propagators can describe multi-component systems, for example, those when quark degrees of freedom create a resonance state, and decay products correct the corresponding pole by adding hadronic deuteron-like components. Meson and baryon states are considered, examples of particles with different spins are presented.
We present a first model-independent calculation of $ππ$ intermediate states in the hadronic-light-by-light (HLbL) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $(g-2)_μ$ that goes beyond the scalar QED pion loop. To this end we combine a recently developed dispersive description of the HLbL tensor with a partial-wave expansion and demonstrate that the known scalar-QED result is recovered after partial-wave resummation. Using dispersive fits to high-statistics data for the pion vector form factor, we provide an evaluation of the full pion box, $a_μ^{π\text{-box}}=-15.9(2)\times 10^…
For the omega-hyperon passing through matter the phenomena of spin rotation and oscillation has investigated quantitatively. Connection of these phenomena with constituent quark rescattering has been determined. It allows one to investigate quark rescattering directly without background of a single scattering.
A model for the $B^\pm \to π^-π^+π^\pm$ decay amplitude is proposed to study the large CP violation observed at the high mass region of the Dalitz plane. A short distance $ b \to u $ amplitude with the weak phase $γ$ is considered together with the contribution of a hadronic charm loop and a s-wave $D\bar{D}\to ππ$ rescattering. In the model, the $χ_c^0$ appears as a narrow resonant state of the $D\bar D$ system below threshold. It is introduced in an unitary two channel S-matrix model of the coupled $D\bar D$ and $ππ$ channels, where the $χ_c^0$ complex pole in $D\bar D$ channel shows its sig…
We review the extension of the factorization formalism of perturbative QCD to {\it coherent} soft rescattering associated with hard scattering in high energy nuclear collisions. We emphasize the ability to quantify high order corrections and the predictive power of factorization approach in terms of universal nonperturbative matrix elements. Although coherent rescattering effects are power suppressed by hard scales of the scattering, they are enhanced by the nuclear size and could play an important role in understanding the novel nuclear dependence observed in high energy nuclear collisions.
We study the elliptic flow coefficient v_2(eta,b) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=200 A GeV as a function of pseudorapidity eta and impact parameter b. Using a hybrid approach which combines early ideal fluid dynamical evolution with late hadronic rescattering, we demonstrate strong dissipative effects from the hadronic rescattering stage on the elliptic flow. With Glauber model initial conditions, hadronic dissipation is shown to be sufficient to fully explain the differences between measured v_2 values and ideal hydrodynamic predictions. Initial conditions based on the Color Glass Condensate …
I discuss the effect of final state interactions on the determination of the CKM angle γfrom B -> K + pi decays. Using a simple Regge-based model for rescattering processes, I argue that such effects could be substantial enough to make it problematic to obtain reliable limits on γin this way. Fortunately, an analysis of B -> K + K decays may provide model-independent bounds on rescattering contributions.
A new mechanism for heavy quarkonium production in high-energy collisions called the "s-channel cut" was proposed in 2005 by Lansberg, Cudell, and Kalinovsky. We identify this mechanism physically as the production of a heavy quark and anti-quark that are on-shell followed by their rescattering to produce heavy quarkonium. We point out that in the NRQCD factorization formalism this rescattering mechanism is a contribution to the color-singlet model term at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory. Its leading contribution to the production rate can be calculated without introducing…
A calculation of the hadronic matrix elements for K\toππincluding π-πrescattering effects in a dispersion integral is presented. I study the dependence of the results on the matching scale μand use them to calculate the CP-parameter (ε\prime/ε). I find improved stability on the matching scale and good agreement with the experimental results.
We demonstrate that oxygen-oxygen (OO) collisions at the LHC provide unprecedented sensitivity to parton energy loss in a system whose size is comparable to those created in very peripheral heavy-ion collisions. With leading and next-to-leading order calculations of nuclear modification factors, we show that the baseline in the absence of partonic rescattering is known with up to 2% theoretical accuracy in inclusive OO collisions. Surprisingly, a $Z$-boson normalized nuclear modification factor does not lead to higher theoretical accuracy within current uncertainties of nuclear parton distribu…
We study phi photoproduction with various hadronic rescattering contributions included, in addition to the Pomeron and pseudoscalar meson-exchange diagrams. We find that the hadronic box diagrams can explain the recent experimental data in the vicinity of the threshold. In particular, the bump-like structure at the photon energy E_gamma \approx 2.3$ GeV is well explained by the K Lambda(1520) rescattering amplitude in the intermediate state, which is the dominant contribution among other hadronic contributions. We also find that the hadronic box diagrams are consistent with the observed spin-d…
Using a relativistic hydrodynamics + hadronic afterburner simulation we explore resonance production in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV, and demonstrate that many resonance yields, mean transverse momenta, and flows are very sensitive to the late stage hadronic rescattering. Out of all measured resonances $Λ(1520)$ is affected strongest by the hadronic rescattering stage, which allows to estimate its duration, and even constrain branching ratios of $Σ^* \to Λ(1520)π$ decays. Strong suppression of $Λ(1520)$, which in vacuum has a lifetime of 12.6 fm/$c$, is explained by its small lifetime in a hadr…
Representing the semi-hard partonic interactions by the exchange of Lipatov's perturbative Pomeron, we express the semi-hard nuclear cross section as a self shadowing cross section. With the help of a generating functional technique, we obtain average numbers of multiple semi-hard partonic collisions without any need of using explicit expressions for the multi-parton distributions. The average number of semi-hard interactions of a given projectile parton against a target nucleus is estimated quantitatively and it is shown to grow very rapidly above one with increasing the c.m. energy. (Figures…
Final-state rescattering effects on the hadronic B decays and their impact on direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries are examined. Implications for some phenomenologies are briefly discussed.
The scattering cross sections of charm mesons with hadrons such as the pion, rho meson, and nucleon are studied in an effective Lagrangian. In heavy ion collisions, rescattering of produced charm mesons by hadrons affects the invariant mass spectra of both charm meson pairs and dileptons resulting from their decays. These effects are estimated for heavy ion collisions at SPS energies and are found to be significant.
There exist many experimental indications that final-state interactions (FSIs) may play a prominent role not only in charmful B decays but also in charmless B ones. We examine the final-state rescattering effects on the hadronic B decay rates and their impact on direct CP violation. The color-suppressed neutral modes such as $B^0\to D^0π^0,π^0π^0,ρ^0π^0,K^0π^0$ can be substantially enhanced by long-distance rescattering effects. The direct CP-violating partial rate asymmetries in charmless B decays to $ππ/πK$ and $ρπ$ are significantly affected by final-state rescattering and their signs are g…
Final-state rescattering effects on the hadronic B decays and their impact on direct CP violation are examined. The phenomenology of the polarization anomaly in $B\toϕK^*$ decays is discussed.
We discuss the AGK rules for the exchange of an arbitrary number of reggeized gluons in perturbative QCD in the high energy limit. Results include the cancellation of corrections to single jet and double jet inclusive cross sections, both for hard and soft rescattering contributions.
We study the event-by-event fluctuations of the charged particles and compare the results of different Monte-Carlo Generators (MCG): VNIb, HIJING, HIJING/B${\bar B}$ and RQMD. We find that the $D$-measure can be used to distinguish between the different gluon populations that are present in the MCG models. On the other hand, the value of the $D$-measure shows high sensitivity to the rescattering effects in VNIb model, but lower sensitivity to the rescattering effects in RQMD model. We also find that the $D$-measures from AA are consistent with the $D$-measures from $pp$ for all generators exce…
Baryon-strangeness correlation (C$_{BS}$) has been investigated with a multi-phase transport model (AMPT) in $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The centrality dependence of C$_{BS}$ is presented within the model, from partonic phase to hadronic matter. We find that the system still reserve partial predicted signatures of C$_{BS}$ after parton coalescence. But after hadronic rescattering, the predicted signatures will be obliterated completely. So it seems that both coalescence hadronization process and hadronic rescattering are responsible for the disappearance of…
We introduce a transport approach which combines partonic and hadronic degrees of freedom on an equal footing and discuss the resulting reaction dynamics. The initial parton dynamics is modeled in the framework of the parton cascade model, hadronization is performed via a cluster hadronization model and configuration space coalescence, and the hadronic phase is described by a microscopic hadronic transport approach. The resulting reaction dynamics indicates a strong influence of hadronic rescattering on the space-time pattern of hadronic freeze-out and on the shape of transverse mass spectra. …
The drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy baryons ($Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$) in the hadronic phase created in the latter stage of the heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies have been evaluated recently. In this work we compute some experimental observables, such as the nuclear suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of heavy baryons at RHIC and LHC energies, highlighting the role of the hadronic phase contribution to these observables, which are going to be measured at Run 3 of LHC. For the time evolution of the heavy quarks in the QGP and heavy baryons in the hadronic phase w…
It is an important question whether the final/initial state gluonic interactions which lead to naive-time-reversal-odd single-spin asymmetries and diffraction at leading twist can be associated in a definite way with the light-front wave function hadronic eigensolutions of QCD. We use light-front time-ordered perturbation theory to obtain augmented light-front wave functions which contain an imaginary phase which depends on the choice of advanced or retarded boundary condition for the gauge potential in light-cone gauge. We apply this formalism to the wave functions of the valence Fock states …
The three-dimensional pion and kaon emission source functions are extracted from the HKM model simulations of the central Au+Au collisions at the top RHIC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. The model describes well the experimental data, previously obtained by the PHENIX and STAR collaborations using the imaging technique. In particular, the HKM reproduces the non-Gaussian heavy tails of the source function in the pair transverse momentum (out) and beam (long) directions, observed in the pion case and practically absent for kaons. The role of the rescatterings and long-lived resonances decays in …
Hadron-nucleus collisions at LHC energies are studied by including explicitly semi-hard parton rescatterings in the collision dynamics. Under rather general conditions, we obtain explicit formulae for the semi-hard cross-section and the inclusive minijet transverse spectrum. As an effect of the rescatterings the spectrum is lowered at small $p_t$ and is enhanced at relatively large transverse momenta, the deformation being more pronounced at increasing rapidity. Its study allows to test the proposed interaction mechanisms and represents an important baseline to examine nucleus-nucleus collisio…
We adapt the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism to study heavy-ion collisions in perturbative QCD. Employing the formalism, we calculate the two-point gluon correlation function $G_{22}^{aμ,bν}$ due to the lowest-order classical gluon fields in the McLerran-Venugopalan model of heavy ion collisions and observe an interesting transition from the classical fields to the quasi-particle picture at later times. Motivated by this observation, we push the formalism to higher orders in the coupling and calculate the contribution to $G_{22}^{aμ,bν}$ coming from the diagrams representing a single rescattering …
A study of hadronic data up to TEVATRON energies in terms of relativistic hydrodynamics indicates an extended 1-dimensional stage of the expansion which suggests a jet like behaviour of the fireball along the collision axis.
We show that strangeness suppression in hadronic and nuclear collisions is fully determined by the initial energy density of the collision. The suppression factor $γ_s(s)$, with $\sqrt s$ denoting the collision energy, can be expressed as a universal function of the initial energy density $ε_0(s)$, and the resulting pattern is in excellent agreement with data from $p-p,~p-Pb,~Cu-Cu,~Au-Au$ and $Pb-Pb$ data over a wide range of energies and for different centralities.
We have analysed the preliminary PHENIX data on the transverse momentum distribution of direct photons in 0-20% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. In ideal hydrodynamics, data are explained if Au+Au collision produces Quark-Gluon-Plasma at the temperature $T_i$=400 MeV, at an initial time $τ_i$=0.6 fm. PHENIX data are not explained in the alternate scenario when Au+Au collisions produces hot hadronic gas with initial temperature within physically acceptable limit.
We propose to describe the time evolution of quasi-stationary fluctuations near QCD critical point by a system of stochastic Boltzmann-Langevin-Vlasov-type equations. We derive the equations and study the system analytically in the linearized regime. Known results for equilibrium stationary fluctuations as well as the critical scaling of diffusion coefficient are reproduced. We apply the approach to the long-standing question of the fate of the critical point fluctuations during the hadronic rescattering stage of the heavy-ion collision after chemical freezeout. We find that if conserved parti…
In this paper hadroproduction of charmonium states in polarized pp collisions is discussed. A thermal picture for the gluonic cloud of comovers is given making contact between the formalism and the measured unpolarized cross sections. The experimentally observed non-polarization of the final J/psi states leads to the consequence that no correlations between the initial proton spin and the final charmonium spin should be existent. Hence the single spin asymmetries vanish to leading order in that model.
We show that if the hadronic resonance gas (HRG), with viscosity to entropy ratio $η/s\approx$0.24, is physical at temperature $T\approx$220 MeV, charged particles $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC, over a wide range of collision centrality do not distinguish between initial QGP fluid and initial hadronic resonance gas. Unambiguous identification of bulk of the matter produced in Au+Au collisions require clear demonstration that HRG is unphysical at temperature $T<$200 MeV. It calls for precise lattice simulations with realistic boundary conditions.
Production of $ϕ$ mesons is considered in the course of heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies. We investigate the possible difference in momentum distributions of $ϕ$ mesons measured via their leptonic ($μ^+μ^-$) and hadronic ($K^+K^-$) decays. Rescattering of secondary kaons in the dense hadron gas together with the influence of in-medium kaon potential can lead to a relative decrease of a $ϕ$ yield observed in the hadronic channel. We analyze how the in-medium modifications of meson properties affect apparent - reconstructed momentum distributions of $ϕ$ mesons. Quantitative results are prese…
We investigate chemical and thermal freeze-out time dependencies for strange particle production for CERN SPS heavy ion collisions in the framework of a dynamical hadronic transport code. We show that the Lambda yield changes considerably after hadronization in the case of Pb+Pb collisions, whereas for smaller system sizes (e.g. S+S) the direct particle production dominates over production from inelastic rescattering. Chemical freeze-out times for strange baryons in Pb+Pb are smaller than for non-strange baryons, but they are still sufficiently long for hadronic rescattering to contribute sign…
In this paper, we show predictions from a new QGP-free, no-equilibration, improved baseline model for heavy-ion collisions. It is comprised of the PYTHIA Angantyr event generator coupled to UrQMD, as a hadronic cascade simulator, and compared to ALICE and CMS data from Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. This coupling is made possible due to a new implementation of the hadron vertex model in PYTHIA Angantyr. Hadronic rescattering in UrQMD is shown to lead to a significant suppression of mid- to high-$p_\perp$ particle yields that is qualitatively consistent with measurements o…
In a framework of a multi-phase transport model with both partonic and hadronic interactions, azimuthal correlations between trigger particles and associated scattering particles in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV/$c$ have been studied by the mixing-event technique. The Mach-like structure has been observed in correlation function for central collisions. It is shown that the Mach-like structure is basically born in the partonic process and further developed in hadronic rescattering process. However, hadronic rescattering alone cannot reproduce the amplitude of Mach-like cone on…
The method for simulation of medium-induced rescattering and energy loss of hard partons in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is developed. The model is realized as fast Monte-Carlo tool implemented to modify standard PYTHIA jet event.
Initial- and final-state rescattering, neglected in the parton model, have a profound effect in QCD hard-scattering reactions, predicting single-spin asymmetries, diffractive deep inelastic scattering, diffractive hard hadronic reactions, the breakdown of the Lam Tung relation in Drell-Yan reactions, and nuclear shadowing and non-universal antishadowing--leading-twist physics not incorporated in the light-front wavefunctions of the target computed in isolation. I also discuss the use of diffraction to materialize the Fock states of a hadronic projectile and test QCD color transparency, and ano…
