The benefits of cutting planes based on the perspective function are well known for many specific classes of mixed-integer nonlinear programs with on/off structures. However, we are not aware of any empirical studies that evaluate their applicability and computational impact over large, heterogeneous test sets in general-purpose solvers. This paper provides a detailed computational study of perspective cuts within a linear programming based branch-and-cut solver for general mixed-integer nonlinear programs. Within this study, we extend the applicability of perspective cuts from convex to nonconvex nonlinearities. This generalization is achieved by applying a perspective strengthening to valid linear inequalities which separate solutions of linear relaxations. The resulting method can be applied to any constraint where all variables appearing in nonlinear terms are semi-continuous and depend on at least one common indicator variable. Our computational experiments show that adding perspective cuts for convex constraints yields a consistent improvement of performance, and adding perspective cuts for nonconvex constraints reduces branch-and-bound tree sizes and strengthens the root node relaxation, but has no significant impact on the overall mean time.
We investigate new methods for generating Lagrangian cuts to solve two-stage stochastic integer programs. Lagrangian cuts can be added to a Benders reformulation, and are derived from solving single scenario integer programming subproblems identical to those used in the nonanticipative Lagrangian dual of a stochastic integer program. While Lagrangian cuts have the potential to significantly strengthen the Benders relaxation, generating Lagrangian cuts can be computationally demanding. We investigate new techniques for generating Lagrangian cuts with the goal of obtaining methods that provide s…
Symmetry handling inequalities (SHIs) are a popular tool to handle symmetries in integer programming. Despite their successful application in practice, only little is known about the interaction of SHIs with optimization problems. In this article, we focus on SST cuts, an attractive class of SHIs, and investigate their computational and polyhedral consequences for optimization problems. After showing that they do not increase the computational complexity of solving optimization problems, we focus on the stable set problem for which we derive presolving techniques based on SST cuts. Moreover, w…
We analyze split cuts from the perspective of cut generating functions via geometric lifting. We show that $α$-cuts, a natural higher-dimensional generalization of the $k$-cuts of Cornuéjols et al., gives all the split cuts for the mixed-integer corner relaxation. As an immediate consequence we obtain that the $k$-cuts are equivalent to split cuts for the 1-row mixed-integer relaxation. Further, we show that split cuts for finite-dimensional corner relaxations are restrictions of split cuts for the infinite-dimensional relaxation. In a final application of this equivalence, we exhibit a family…
Disjunctive cutting planes can tighten a relaxation of a mixed-integer linear program. Traditionally, such cuts are obtained by solving a higher-dimensional linear program, whose additional variables cause the procedure to be computationally prohibitive. Adopting a $\mathcal{V}$-polyhedral perspective is a practical alternative that enables the separation of disjunctive cuts via a linear program with only as many variables as the original problem. The drawback is that the classical approach of monoidal strengthening cannot be directly employed without the values of the extra variables appearin…
The use of convex relaxations has lately gained considerable interest in Power Systems. These relaxations play a major role in providing global optimality guarantees for non-convex optimization problems. For the Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem, the Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) relaxation is known to produce tight lower bounds. Unfortunately, SDP solvers still suffer from a lack of scalability. In this work, we introduce a new set of polynomial SDP-based constraints, strengthening weaker quadratic convex relaxations. The SDP cuts, expressed as polynomial constraints, can be handled by stand…
This paper studies disjunctive cutting planes in Mixed-Integer Conic Programming. Building on conic duality, we formulate a cut-generating conic program for separating disjunctive cuts, and investigate the impact of the normalization condition on its resolution. In particular, we show that a careful selection of normalization guarantees its solvability and conic strong duality. Then, we highlight the shortcomings of separating conic-infeasible points in an outer-approximation context, and propose conic extensions to the classical lifting and monoidal strengthening procedures. Finally, we asses…
We apply logic-based Benders decomposition (LBBD) to two-stage stochastic planning and scheduling problems in which the second-stage is a scheduling task. We solve the master problem with mixed integer/linear programming and the subproblem with constraint programming. As Benders cuts, we use simple nogood cuts as well as analytical logic-based cuts we develop for this application. We find that LBBD is computationally superior to the integer L-shaped method, with a branch-and-check variant of LBBD faster by several orders of magnitude, allowing significantly larger instances to be solved. This …
In this paper, we study the strength of Chvatal-Gomory (CG) cuts and more generally aggregation cuts for packing and covering integer programs (IPs). Aggregation cuts are obtained as follows: Given an IP formulation, we first generate a single implied inequality using aggregation of the original constraints, then obtain the integer hull of the set defined by this single inequality with variable bounds, and finally use the inequalities describing the integer hull as cutting-planes. Our first main result is to show that for packing and covering IPs, the CG and aggregation closures can be 2-appro…
In recent years, several integer programming (IP) approaches were developed for maximum-likelihood decoding and minimum distance computation for binary linear codes. Two aspects in particular have been demonstrated to improve the performance of IP solvers as well as adaptive linear programming decoders: the dynamic generation of forbidden-set (FS) inequalities, a family of valid cutting planes, and the utilization of so-called redundant parity-checks (RPCs). However, to date, it had remained unclear how to solve the exact RPC separation problem (i.e., to determine whether or not there exists a…
We study a class of bilevel integer programs with second-order cone constraints at the upper level and a convex quadratic objective and linear constraints at the lower level. We develop disjunctive cuts to separate bilevel infeasible points using a second-order-cone-based cut-generating procedure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time disjunctive cuts are studied in the context of discrete bilevel optimization. Using these disjunctive cuts, we establish a branch-and-cut algorithm for the problem class we study, and a cutting plane method for the problem variant with only binary …
We address the issue of generating cutting planes for mixed integer programs from multiple rows of the simplex tableau with the tools of disjunctive programming. A cut from q rows of the simplex tableau is an intersection cuts from a q-dimensional parametric cross-polytope, which can also be viewed as a disjunctive cut from a 2q-term disjunction. We define the disjunctive hull of the q-row problem, describe its relation to the integer hull, and show how to generate its facets. For the case of binary basic variables, we derive cuts from the stronger disjunctions whose terms are equations. We gi…

In this paper we consider the problem of learning a regression function without assuming its functional form. This problem is referred to as symbolic regression. An expression tree is typically used to represent a solution function, which is determined by assigning operators and operands to the nodes. The symbolic regression problem can be formulated as a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), where binary variables are used to assign operators and nonlinear expressions are used to propagate data values through nonlinear operators such as square, square root, and exponential. We ex…

Cutting planes (cuts) are important for solving mixed-integer linear programs (MILPs), which formulate a wide range of important real-world applications. Cut selection -- which aims to select a proper subset of the candidate cuts to improve the efficiency of solving MILPs -- heavily depends on (P1) which cuts should be preferred, and (P2) how many cuts should be selected. Although many modern MILP solvers tackle (P1)-(P2) by manually designed heuristics, machine learning offers a promising approach to learn more effective heuristics from MILPs collected from specific applications. However, man…
We investigate the use of linear programming tools for solving semidefinite programming relaxations of quadratically constrained quadratic problems. Classes of valid linear inequalities are presented, including sparse PSD cuts, and principal minors PSD cuts. Computational results based on instances from the literature are presented.
The lift-and-project closure is the relaxation obtained by computing all lift-and-project cuts from the initial formulation of a mixed integer linear program or equivalently by computing all mixed integer Gomory cuts read from all tableau's corresponding to feasible and infeasible bases. In this paper, we present an algorithm for approximating the value of the lift-and-project closure. The originality of our method is that it is based on a very simple cut generation linear programming problem which is obtained from the original linear relaxation by simply modifying the bounds on the variables …

Cutting plane methods play a significant role in modern solvers for tackling mixed-integer programming (MIP) problems. Proper selection of cuts would remove infeasible solutions in the early stage, thus largely reducing the computational burden without hurting the solution accuracy. However, the major cut selection approaches heavily rely on heuristics, which strongly depend on the specific problem at hand and thus limit their generalization capability. In this paper, we propose a data-driven and generalizable cut selection approach, named Cut Ranking, in the settings of multiple instance lear…
We propose a cut-based algorithm for finding all vertices and all facets of the convex hull of all integer points of a polyhedron defined by a system of linear inequalities. Our algorithm DDM Cuts is based on the Gomory cuts and the dynamic version of the double description method. We describe the computer implementation of the algorithm and present the results of computational experiments comparing our algorithm with a naive one.
In this paper we consider the problem of finding bounds on the prices of options depending on multiple assets without assuming any underlying model on the price dynamics, but only the absence of arbitrage opportunities. We formulate this as a generalized moment problem and utilize the well-known Moment-Sum-of-Squares (SOS) hierarchy of Lasserre to obtain bounds on the range of the possible prices. A complementary approach (also due to Lasserre) is employed for comparison. We present several numerical examples to demonstrate the viability of our approach. The framework we consider makes it poss…
Maintenance planning plays a key role in power system operations under uncertainty by helping system operators ensure a reliable and secure power grid. This paper studies a short-term condition-based integrated maintenance planning with operations scheduling problem while considering the unexpected failure possibilities of generators as well as transmission lines. We formulate this problem as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer program with failure scenarios sampled from the sensor-driven remaining lifetime distributions of the individual system elements whereas a joint chance-constraint cons…
