We present an experimental study of a two component Fermi gas following an interaction quench into the superfluid phase. Starting with a weakly attractive gas in the normal phase, interactions are ramped to unitarity at a range of rates and we measure the subsequent dynamics as the gas approaches equilibrium. Both the formation and condensation of fermion pairs are mapped via measurements of the pair momentum distribution and can take place on very different timescales, depending on the adiabaticity of the quench. The contact parameter is seen to respond very quickly to changes in the interaction strength, indicating that short-range correlations, based on the occupation of high-momentum modes, evolve far more rapidly than the correlations in low-momentum modes necessary for pair condensation.
Motivated by an unexpected experimental observation from the Cambridge group, [Eigen {\it et al.,} Nature {\bf563}, 221 (2018)], we study the evolution of the momentum distribution of a degenerate Bose gas quenched from the weakly interacting to the unitarity regime. For the two-body problem, we establish a relation that connects the momentum distribution at a long time to a sub-leading term in the initial wave function. For the many-body problem, we employ the time-dependent Bogoliubov variational wave function and find that, in certain momentum regimes, the momentum distribution at long time…
We study a degenerate Bose gas quenched to unitarity by solving a many-body model including three-body losses and correlations up to second order. As the gas evolves in this strongly-interacting regime, the buildup of correlations leads to the formation of extended pairs bound purely by many-body effects, analogous to the phenomenon of Cooper pairing in the BCS regime of the Fermi gas. Through fast sweeps away from unitarity, we detail how the correlation growth and formation of bound pairs emerge in the fraction of unbound atoms remaining post sweep, finding quantitative agreement with experi…
We study the growth of two- and three-body correlations in an ultracold Bose gas quenched to unitarity. This is encoded in the dynamics of the two- and three-body contacts analyzed in this work. Via a set of relations connecting many-body correlations dynamics with few-body models, signatures of the Efimov effect are mapped out as a function of evolution time at unitarity over a range of atomic densities $n$. For the thermal resonantly interacting Bose gas, we find that atom-bunching leads to an enhanced growth of few-body correlations. These atom-bunching effects also highlight the interplay …
Understanding strongly correlated phases of matter, from the quark-gluon plasma to neutron stars, and in particular the dynamics of such systems, $e.g.$ following a Hamiltonian quench, poses a fundamental challenge in modern physics. Ultracold atomic gases are excellent quantum simulators for these problems, thanks to tuneable interparticle interactions and experimentally resolvable intrinsic timescales. In particular, they give access to the unitary regime where the interactions are as strong as allowed by quantum mechanics. Following years of experiments on unitary Fermi gases, unitary Bose …
We calculate the normal mass density of a paired Fermi gas at unitarity. The dominant contribution near the superfluid transition is from fermionic quasiparticle excitations, and is thus sensitive to the pairing gap. A comparison with the recent experiment of Sidorenkov et al. suggests that the superfluid gap near the transition temperature is larger than the BCS value, but the data do not permit a quantitative inference of the gap. Calculations of the quenched moment of inertia of a BCS superfluid in a harmonic trap are in reasonable agreement with the earlier experiment of Riedl et al.
Using numerical simulation based on a density-functional equation for a trapped Fermi super-fluid valid along the BCS-unitarity crossover, we establish robust scaling over many orders of magnitude in the observables of the system as a function of fermion number. This scaling allows to predict the static properties of the system, such as energy, chemical potential, etc., for a large number of fermions, over the crossover, from the knowledge of those for a small number ($\sim 4-10$) of fermions.
We theoretically investigate attractive Fermi polarons in three dimensions at finite temperature and impurity concentration through the many-body T-matrix theory and high-temperature virial expansion. By using the analytically continued impurity Green's function, we calculate the direct rf spectroscopy of attractive polarons in the unitary regime. Taking the peak value of the rf spectroscopy as the polaron energy and the full width half maximum as the polaron lifetime, we determine the temperature range of validity for the quasi-particle description of Fermi polarons in the unitary limit.
Using density functional theory in a time dependent approach we determine the frequencies of the compressional modes of the normal phase of a Fermi gas at unitarity as a function of its polarization. Our energy functional accounts for the typical elastic deformations exhibited by Landau theory of Fermi liquids. The comparison with the available experiments is biased by important collisional effects affecting both the {\it in phase} and the {\it out of phase} oscillations even at the lowest temperatures. New experiments in the collisionless regime would provide a crucial test of the applicabili…
We derive a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii density-functional equation appropriate to study the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dimers formed of singlet spin-half Fermi pairs in the BEC-unitarity crossover while the dimer-dimer scattering length $a$ changes from 0 to $\infty$. Using an effective one-dimensional form of this equation, we study the phenomenon of dynamical self-trapping of a cigar-shaped Fermi super-fluid in the entire BEC-unitarity crossover in a double-well potential. A simple two-mode model is constructed to provide analytical insights. We also discuss the consequence of our s…
The induced intraspecies interactions among the majority species, mediated by the minority species, is computed for a population-imbalanced two-component Fermi gas. Although the Feshbach-resonance mediated interspecies interaction is dominant for equal populations, leading to singlet s-wave pairing, we find that in the strongly imbalanced regime the induced intraspecies interaction leads to p-wave pairing and superfluidity of the majority species. Thus, we predict that the observed spin-polaron Fermi liquid state in this regime is unstable to p-wave superfluidity, in accordance with the result…
We investigate finite particle systems of cold atoms bound in a local potential V(r). We derive the ground state energy and the particle density using a recently developed semiclassical theory (2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 200408), and assuming the particles are described by the Haldane-Wu fractional exclusion statistics (FES) at unitarity. This approach is applied to atoms trapped into a three dimensional harmonic oscillator. We show that the parameter-free FES semiclassical theory yields results that are consistent with numerical simulations by Chang and Bertsch [2007 Phys. Rev A 76 021603(R)] …
We present an experimental study of the high-energy excitation spectra of unitary Fermi gases. Using focussed beam Bragg spectroscopy, we locally probe atoms in the central region of a harmonically trapped cloud where the density is nearly uniform, enabling measurements of the dynamic structure factor for a range of temperatures both below and above the superfluid transition. Applying sum-rules to the measured Bragg spectra, we resolve the characteristic behaviour of the universal contact parameter, ${\cal C}$, across the superfluid transition. We also employ a recent theoretical result for th…
We address recent spin transport experiments in ultracold unitary Fermi gases. We provide a theoretical understanding for how the measured temperature dependence of the spin diffusivity at low $T$ can disagree with the expected behavior of a Fermi liquid (FL) while the spin susceptiblity(following the experimental protocols) is consistent with a Fermi liquid picture. We show that the experimental protocols for extracting $χ_s$ are based on a FL presumption; relaxing this leads to consistency within (but not proof of) a pseudogap-based approach. Our tranport calculations yield insight into the …
We consider a Fermi gas at unitarity trapped by a highly elongated harmonic potential and solve the equations of two fluid hydrodynamics at finite temperature. The propagation of sound waves as well as the discretized solutions in the presence of weak axial trapping are considered. The relevant thermodynamic functions entering the hydrodynamic equations are discussed in the superfluid and normal regimes in terms of universal scaling functions. Both first sound and second sound solutions are calculated as a function of temperature and the role of the superfluid density is explicitly pointed out…
The usual treatment of a Bose-Fermi mixture relies on weak-coupling Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) and density-functional (DF) Lagrangians, often including the more realistic {perturbative} Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) corrections. We suggest analytic {non-perturbative} beyond-mean-field Bose and Fermi Lagrangians valid along the crossover from weak- to strong-coupling limits of intra-species interactions consistent with the LHY corrections and the strong-coupling (unitarity) limit for small and large scattering lengths $|a|$, respectively, and use these to study the Bose-Fermi mixture. We study numerically mi…
We develop a theoretical method going beyond the contact-interaction approximation frequently used in mean-field theories of many-fermion systems, based on the low-energy T-matrix of the pair potential to rigorously define the effective radius of the interaction. One of the main consequences of our approach is the possibility to investigate finite-density effects, which are outside the range of validity of approximations based on delta-like potentials. We apply our method to the calculation of density dependent properties of an ultracold gas of 6Li atoms at unitarity, whose two-body interactio…
We present a theoretical study of the dynamic structure function of a resonantly interacting two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature. Our approach is based on dynamic many-body theory able to describe excitations in strongly correlated Fermi systems. The fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method is used to produce the ground-state correlation functions which are used as an input for the excitation theory. Our approach reproduces recent Bragg scattering data in both the density and the spin channel. In the BCS regime, the response is close to that of the ideal Fermi gas. On the BEC side, the …
Equal-mass two-component Fermi gases under spherically symmetric external harmonic confinement with large s-wave scattering length are considered. Using the stochastic variational approach, we determine the lowest 286 and 164 relative eigenenergies of the (2,2) and (3,1) systems at unitarity as a function of the range $r_0$ of the underlying two-body potential and extrapolate to the $r_0 \rightarrow 0$ limit. Our calculations include all states with vanishing and finite angular momentum $L$ (and natural and unnatural parity $Π$) with relative energy up to $10.5 \hbar Ω$, where $Ω$ denotes the …
In this paper we present a Monte Carlo calculation of the critical temperature and other thermodynamic quantities for the unitary Fermi gas with a population imbalance (unequal number of fermions in the two spin components). We describe an improved worm type algorithm that is less prone to autocorrelations than the previously available methods and show how this algorithm can be applied to simulate the unitary Fermi gas in presence of a small imbalance. Our data indicates that the critical temperature remains almost constant for small imbalances $h=Δμ/ε_F\lessapprox0.2$. We obtain the continuum…
We consider mass-imbalanced two-component Fermi gases for which the unequal-mass atoms interact via a zero-range model potential with a diverging s-wave scattering length $a_s$, i.e., with $1/a_s=0$. The high temperature thermodynamics of the harmonically trapped and homogeneous systems are examined using a virial expansion approach up to third order in the fugacity. We find that the universal part of the third-order virial coefficient associated with two light atoms and one heavy atom is negative, while that associated with two heavy and one light atom changes sign from negative to positive a…
We present a theory for the low-temperature properties of a resonantly interacting Fermi mixture in a trap, that goes beyond the local-density approximation. The theory corresponds essentially to a Landau-Ginzburg-like approach that includes self-energy effects to account for the strong interactions at unitarity. We show diagrammatically how these self-energy effects arise from fluctuations in the superfluid order parameter. Gradient terms of the order parameter are included to account for inhomogeneities. This approach incorporates the state-of-the-art knowledge of the homogeneous mixture wit…
We study the quenched dynamics of the momentum distribution of a unitary Bose gas under isotropic harmonic confinement within a time-dependent density functional approach based on our recently calculated Monte Carlo (MC) bulk equation of state. In our calculations the inter-atomic s-wave scattering length of the trapped bosons is suddenly increased to a very large value and the real-time evolution of the system is studied. Prompted by the very recent experimental data of $^{85}$Rb atoms at unitarity [Nature Phys. 10, 116 (2014)] we focus on the momentum distribution as a function of time. Our …
We present fully nonlinear dissipative fluid dynamics simulations of a trapped two-dimensional Fermi gas at unitarity using a Lattice Boltzmann algorithm. We are able to simulate non-harmonic trapping potentials, temperature-dependent viscosities as well as a discretized version of the ballistic (non-interacting) behavior. Our approach lends itself to direct comparison with experimental data, opening up the possibility of a precision determination of transport coefficients in the unitary Fermi gas. Furthermore, we predict the presence of a non-hydrodynamic component in the quadrupole mode, whi…
We present measurements of the local (homogeneous) density-density response function of a Fermi gas at unitarity using spatially resolved Bragg spectroscopy. By analyzing the Bragg response across one axis of the cloud we extract the response function for a uniform gas which shows a clear signature of the Bose-Einstein condensation of pairs of fermions when the local temperature drops below the superfluid transition temperature. The method we use for local measurement generalizes a scheme for obtaining the local pressure in a harmonically trapped cloud from the line density and can be adapted …
We theoretically investigate the spin-dipole oscillation of a strongly interacting Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. By using a combined diagrammatic strong-coupling theory with a local density approximation and a sum rule approach, we clarify the temperature dependence of the spin-dipole frequency near the unitarity, which is deeply related to the spin susceptibility, as well as pairing correlations. While the spin-dipole frequency exactly coincides with the trap frequency in a non-interacting Fermi gas, it is shown to remarkably be enhanced in the superfluid state, because of the suppression of …
We examine the physics of two, three, and four heavy fermions interacting with a single light fermion via short-range interactions. Four-particle bosonic Efimov states have proven important experimentally and also been the subject of significant theoretical effort. Similar fermionic systems are just now being investigated. We find that with some simple interactions the four- and five-particle states collapse to the interaction range at smaller mass ratios than the three-body state, and also before larger clusters can collapse. These states and their excitations can be studied in cold atom expe…
From an extensive calculation of static properties of a trapped Fermi superfluid at zero temperature using a density-functional formulation, we demonstrate a universal behavior of its observables, such as energy, chemical potential, radius etc., over the crossover from the BCS limit to unitarity leading to scaling over many orders of magnitude in fermion number. This scaling allows to predict the static properties of the system, with a large number ($\sim 10^5$) of fermions, over the crossover with an error of 1-2%, from the knowledge of those for a small number ($\sim 10$) of fermions.
We investigate the expansion dynamics of a dilute Fermi gas at unitarity in the context of dissipative fluid dynamics. Our aim is to quantify the effects of shear viscosity on the time evolution of the system. We compare exact numerical solutions of the equations of viscous hydrodynamics to various approximations that have been proposed in the literature. Our main findings are: i) Shear viscosity leads to characteristic features in the expansion dynamics; ii) a quantitative description of these effects has to include reheating; iii) dissipative effects are not sensitive to the equation of stat…
We experimentally investigate the unitarity-limited behavior of the three-body loss near a p-wave Feshbach resonance in a single-component Fermi gas of $^6$Li atoms. At the unitarity limit, the three-body loss coefficient $L_{3}$ exhibits universality in the sense that it is independent of the interaction strength and follows the predicted temperature scaling law of $L_3 \propto T^{-2}$. When decreasing the interaction strength from the unitarity regime, the three-body loss coefficient as a function of the interaction strength and temperature can be described by the theory based on the associa…
In the case of tight transverse confinement (cigar-shaped trap) the three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation, describing superfluid Fermi atoms at unitarity (infinite scattering length $|a|\to \infty$), is reduced to an effective one-dimensional form by averaging over the transverse coordinates. The resultant effective equation is a 1D nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation, which produces results in good agreement with the original 3D one. In the limit of small and large fermion number $N$ the nonlinearity is of simple power-law type. A similar reduction of the 3D theory to a two-dim…
We confirm and expand on work by Chafin and Schaefer on hydrodynamic fluctuations in the unitary Fermi gas. Using the result for the equation of state from a recent MIT experiment, we derive lower bounds for η/n and η/s as a function of temperature. Re-analyzing recent quantum Monte Carlo data for the shear-viscosity spectral function we point out a possible resolution for the tension between the viscosity bound η/n> 0.3 from Chafin and Schaefer and the quantum Monte Carlo results η/n<0.2$ from Wlazlowski et al. near the critical temperature
Lattice field theory is a useful tool for studying strongly interacting theories in condensed matter physics. A prominent example is the unitary Fermi gas: a two-component system of fermions interacting with divergent scattering length. With Monte Carlo methods this system can be studied from first principles. In the presence of an imbalance (unequal number of particles in the two components) a sign problem arises, which makes conventional algorithms inapplicable. We will show how to apply reweighting techniques to generalise the recently developed worm algorithm to the imbalanced case, and pr…
The dilute Fermi gas at unitarity is scale invariant and its bulk viscosity vanishes. We compute the leading contribution to the bulk viscosity when the scattering length is not infinite. A measure of scale breaking is provided by the ratio $(P-\frac{2}{3}{\cal E})/P$, where $P$ is the pressure and ${\cal E}$ is the energy density. In the high temperature limit this ratio scales as $\frac{zλ}{a}$, where $z$ is the fugacity, $λ$ is the thermal wave length, and $a$ is the scattering length. We show that the bulk viscosity $ζ$ scales as the second power of this parameter, $ζ\sim (\frac{zλ}{a})^2 …
We consider the time evolution of a dilute atomic Fermi gas after release from a trapping potential. A common difficulty with using fluid dynamics to study the expansion of the gas is that the theory is not applicable in the dilute corona, and that a naive treatment of the entire cloud using fluid dynamics leads to unphysical results. We propose to remedy this problem by including certain non-hydrodynamic degrees of freedom, in particular anisotropic components of the pressure tensor, in the theoretical description. We show that, using this method, it is possible to describe the crossover from…
We analyze the contributions of Nambu-Goldstone modes to the shear viscosity of a superfluid atomic Fermi gas close to unitarity. We show that the low temperature experimental values of the shear viscosity to entropy ratio, $η/s$, are reproduced considering an effective shear viscosity which takes into account the collisions among Nambu-Goldstone bosons and the finite size of the optical trap. We predict that, for $T \lesssim 0.1 T_F$, $η/s$ should correlate with the size of the trap and linearly decrease with decreasing temperature. For $T \gtrsim 0.1 T_F$, we find agreement with the experime…
We investigate an ultracold Fermi gas at unitarity confined in a periodic box $V=L^3$ using renormalization group (RG) techniques. Within this approach we can quantitatively assess the long range bosonic order parameter fluctuations which dominate finite-size effects. We determine the finite-size and particle-number dependence of universal quantities, such as the Bertsch parameter and the fermion gap. Moreover, we analyze how these universal observables respond to the variation of an external pairing source. Our results indicate that the Bertsch parameter saturates rather quickly to its value …
We study the dilute Fermi gas at unitarity using molecular dynamics with an effective quantum potential constructed to reproduce the quantum two-body density matrix at unitarity. Results for the equation of state, the pair correlation function and the shear viscosity are presented. These quantities are well understood in the dilute, high temperature, limit. Using molecular dynamics we determine higher order corrections in the diluteness parameter $nλ^3$, where $n$ is the density and $λ$ is the thermal de Broglie wave length. In the case of the contact density, which parameterizes the short dis…
We study hydrodynamic fluctuations in a non-relativistic fluid. We show that in three dimensions fluctuations lead to a minimum in the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s$ as a function of the temperature. The minimum provides a bound on $η/s$ which is independent of the conjectured bound in string theory, $η/s \geq \hbar/(4πk_B)$, where $s$ is the entropy density. For the dilute Fermi gas at unitarity we find $η/s\gsim 0.2\hbar$. This bound is not universal -- it depends on thermodynamic properties of the unitary Fermi gas, and on empirical information about the range of validity of…
We describe recent attempts to extract the shear viscosity of the dilute Fermi gas at unitarity from experiments involving scaling flows. A scaling flow is a solution of the hydrodynamic equations that preserves the shape of the density distribution. The scaling flows that have been explored in the laboratory are the transverse expansion from a deformed trap ("elliptic flow"), the expansion from a rotating trap, and collective oscillations. We discuss advantages and disadvantages of the different experiments, and point to improvements of the theoretical analysis that are needed in order to ach…
I present lattice Monte Carlo calculations for a universal four-component Fermi gas confined to a finite box and to a harmonic trap in one spatial dimension. I obtain the values xi_1d = 0.370(4) and xi_1d = 0.372(1), respectively, for the Bertsch parameter, a nonperturbative universal constant defined as the (square of the) energy of the untrapped (trapped) system measured in units of the free gas energy. The Bertsch parameter for the one-dimensional system is consistent to within ~1% uncertainties with the most recent numerical and experimental estimates of the analogous Bertsch parameter for…
We study the pairing dynamics of polar states in a single species p-wave superfluid Fermi gas following a sudden change of the interaction strength. The anisotropy of pair interaction together with the presence of the centrifugal barrier results in profoundly different pairing dynamics compared to the s-wave case. Depending on the direction of quenches, quench to the BCS regime results in a large oscillatory depletion of momentum occupation inside the Fermi sea or a large filling of momentum occupation. We elucidate a crucial role of the resonant state supported by the centrifugal barrier in t…
