Recently, \citet{vitral2021does} detected a central concentration of dark objects in the core-collapsed globular cluster NGC 6397, which could be interpreted as a subcluster of stellar-mass black holes. However, it is well established theoretically that any significant number of black holes in the cluster would provide strong dynamical heating and is fundamentally inconsistent with this cluster's core-collapsed profile. Claims of intermediate-mass black holes in core-collapsed clusters should similarly be treated with suspicion, for reasons that have been understood theoretically for many decades. Instead, the central dark population in NGC 6397 is exactly accounted for by a compact subsystem of white dwarfs, as we demonstrate here by inspection of a previously published model that provides a good fit to this cluster. These central subclusters of heavy white dwarfs are in fact a generic feature of core-collapsed clusters, while central black hole subclusters are present in all {\em non\/}-collapsed clusters.
In an EHT study of a Jy-level target, Safarzadeh et al. (2019) show how astrometric monitoring could constrain massive black hole binaries with the wide separations that make them long-lived against gravitational wave losses, and with the small mass ratios expected from merged satellite galaxies. With this ngVLA study, we show how such frontier topics could be explored for the more numerous mJy-level targets, such as NGC\,4472. We also discuss how ngVLA astrometric monitoring could test the upper limits from pulsar timing arrays on gravitational waves from NGC\,4472.
We present the results of deep radio observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of the globular cluster NGC 6388. We show that there is no radio source detected (with a r.m.s. noise level of 27 uJy) at the cluster centre of gravity or at the locations of the any of the Chandra X-ray sources in the cluster. Based on the fundamental plane of accreting black holes which is a relationship between X-ray luminosity, radio luminosity and black hole mass, we place an upper limit of 1500 M_sun on the mass of the putative intermediate-mass black hole located at the centre of NGC 6388…
We show that the radial velocity-variable star in the black hole candidate NGC 1850 BH1 cannot be a normal $\approx 5\,M_{\odot}$ subgiant, as was proposed, but is an overluminous stripped-envelope star with mass $\approx 1 M_{\odot}$. The result follows directly from the star's observed radius and the orbital period -- density relation for Roche lobe-filling stars: the star's density, as constrained by the observed ellipsoidal variability, is too low for its mass to exceed $\approx 1.5\,M_{\odot}$. This lower mass significantly reduces the implied mass of the unseen companion and qualitative …
We make use of the absence of Lense-Thirring precession of the innermost megamaser clumps around black holes in order to place upper limits on the spin amplitude of seven black holes at the center of megamaser galaxies: NGC 4258, NGC 2273, UGC 3789, NGC 3393, NGC 5495, NGC 5765b, and UGC 6093. The constraints are derived by requiring that the associated precession time-scale be longer than the age of the megamaser clumps, in order to preserve the single-plane geometry of the megamasers.
We present a discovery of the correlation between the X-ray spectral (photon) index and mass accretion rate observed in AGN NGC 4051. We analyzed spectral transition episodes observed in NGC 4051 using XMM/Newton, Suzaku and RXTE. We applied a scaling technique for a black hole (BH) mass evaluation which uses a correlation between the photon index and normalization of the seed (disk) component, which is proportional to a mass accretion rate. We developed an analytical model that shows the spectral (photon) index of the BH emergent spectrum undergoes an evolution from lower to higher values dep…
We present our analysis of X-ray spectral properties observed from the Seyfrert 1 galactic nucleus NGC~7469 using the RXTE and ASCA observations. We demonstrate strong observational evidence that NGC~7469 undergoes spectral transitions from the low hard state (LHS) to the intermediate state (IS) during these observations. The RXTE observations (1996--2009) show that the source was in the IS ~ 75 % of the time only, ~ 25 % of the time in the LHS. The spectra of NGC~7469 are well fitted by the so-called bulk motion Comptonization (BMC) model for all spectral states. We have established the photo…
Recently Nyland et al. (2012) argued that the radio emission observed in the center of the dwarf galaxy NGC 404 originates in a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) powered by a massive black hole ($M\sim<10^6$ M$_{\odot}$). High-resolution radio detections of MBHs are rare. Here we present sensitive, contemporaneous Chandra X-ray, and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN). The source is detected in the X-rays, and shows no long-term variability. If the hard X-ray source is powered by accretion, the apparent low accretion eff…
We present the results of new X-ray observations of XMMU 122939.7+075333, the black hole (BH) in the globular cluster RZ 2109 in the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4472. A combination of non-detections and marginal detections in several recent Swift and Chandra observations show that the source has varied by at least a factor of 20 in the past 6 years, and that the variations seem not just to be "flickering." This variation could be explained with changes in the absorption column intrinsic to the source no larger than those which were previously seen near the peak of the 1989 outburst of the Galacti…
We study the velocity dispersion profiles of the nuclei of NGC 1326, 2685, 5273 and 5838 in the CO first overtone band. There is evidence for a black hole (BH) in NGC 1326 and 5838. Gas is seen flowing out of the nuclear region of NGC 5273. We put upper limits on the nuclear BHs responsible for its activity and that of NGC 2685.
As a natural consequence of cosmological hierarchical structure formation, sub-parsec supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) should be common in galaxies but thus far have eluded spectroscopic identification. Based on four decades of optical spectroscopic monitoring, we report that the nucleus of NGC 5548, a nearby Seyfert galaxy long suspected to have experienced a major merger about one billion years ago, exhibits long-term variability with a period of 14 years in the optical continuum and broad Hbeta emission line. Remarkably, the double-peaked profile of Hbeta shows systematic velocity …
Different massive black hole mass - host galaxy scaling relations suggest that the growth of massive black holes is entangled with the evolution of their host galaxies. The number of measured black hole masses is still limited, and additional measurements are necessary to understand the underlying physics of this apparent co-evolution. We add six new black hole mass (MBH) measurements of nearby fast rotating early-type galaxies to the known black hole mass sample, namely NGC 584, NGC 2784, NGC 3640, NGC 4570, NGC 4281 and NGC 7049. Our target galaxies have effective velocity dispersions (σe) b…
The acceleration of LMXB 4U 1820-30 that derived from its orbital-period derivative $\dot P_{\rm b}$ was supposed to be the evidence for an Intermediate-mass Black Hole (IMBH) in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 6624. However, we find that the anomalous $\dot P_{\rm b}$ is mainly due to the gravitational wave emission, rather than the acceleration in cluster potential. Using the standard structure models of GCs, we simulate acceleration distributions for pulsars in the central region of the cluster. By fitting the acceleration of J1823-3021A with the simulated distribution profiles (maxi…
Jet ejection by accreting black holes is a mass invariant mechanism unifying stellar and supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that should also apply for intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), which are thought to be the seeds from which SMBHs form. We present the detection of an off-nuclear IMBH of $\sim$5 $\times$ 10$^{4}$ M$_\odot$ located in an unusual spiral arm of the galaxy NGC 2276 based on quasi-simultaneous \textit{Chandra} X-ray observations and European VLBI Network (EVN) radio observations. The IMBH, NGC2276-3c, possesses a 1.8 pc radio jet that is oriented in the same direction as lar…
An intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) was recently reported to reside in the centre of the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 6624, based on timing observations of a millisecond pulsar (MSP) located near the cluster centre in projection. We present dynamical models with multiple mass components of NGC 6624 - without an IMBH - which successfully describe the surface brightness profile and proper motion kinematics from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the stellar mass function at different distances from the cluster centre. The maximum line-of-sight acceleration at the position of the MSP a…
As part of our massive spectroscopic survey of 25 Galactic globular clusters with MUSE, we performed multiple epoch observations of NGC 3201 with the aim of constraining the binary fraction. In this cluster, we found one curious star at the main-sequence turn-off with radial velocity variations of the order of 100 km/s, indicating the membership to a binary system with an unseen component since no other variations appear in the spectra. Using an adapted variant of the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram, we could calculate the orbital parameters and found the companion to be a detached stella…
We present mass estimates of supermassive black holes in six nearby fast rotating early-type galaxies (NGC4339, NGC4434, NGC4474, NGC4551, NGC4578 and NGC4762) with effective stellar velocity dispersion around 100 km/s. We use near-infrared laser-guide adaptive optics observations with the GEMINI/NIFS to derive stellar kinematics in the galactic nuclei, and SAURON observations from the ATLAS3D Survey for large-scale kinematics. We build axisymmetric Jeans anisotropic models and axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical models. Both modelling approaches recover consistent orbital anisotropies and bl…
We report the detection of a black hole (NGC 1850 BH1) in the $\sim$100 Myr-old massive cluster NGC~1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is in a binary system with a main-sequence turn-off star (4.9 $\pm$ 0.4 M${_\odot}$), which is starting to fill its Roche Lobe and becoming distorted. Using 17 epochs of VLT/MUSE observations we detected radial velocity variations exceeding 300 km/s associated to the target star, linked to the ellipsoidal variations measured by OGLE-IV in the optical bands. Under the assumption of a semi-detached system, the simultaneous modelling of radial velocity and lig…
We present deep (250 ks) Chandra observations of the nearby galaxy group NGC 1600, which has at its centre an ultramassive black hole (17$\pm$1.5 billion M$_{\odot}$). The exceptionally large mass of the black hole coupled with its low redshift makes it one of only a handful of black holes for which spatially resolved temperature and density profiles can be obtained within the Bondi radius with the high spatial resolution of Chandra. We analyzed the hot gas properties within the Bondi accretion radius R$_B$=1.2" - 1.7"= 0.38 - 0.54 kpc. Within a $\sim\!3$ kpc radius, we find two temperature co…
We present the results of a reverberation-mapping program targeting NGC5273, a nearby early-type galaxy with a broad-lined active galactic nucleus. Over the course of the monitoring program, NGC5273 showed strong variability that allowed us to measure time delays in the responses of the broad optical recombination lines to changes in the continuum flux. A weighted average of these measurements results in a black hole mass determination of $M_{\rm BH} = (4.7 \pm 1.6) \times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$. An estimate of the size of the black hole sphere of influence in NGC5273 puts it just at the limit of t…
We present the results of deep, high-resolution, 5 GHz Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) observations of the nearby, dwarf lenticular galaxy and intermediate mass black hole candidate (M ~4.5 x 10^5 M_sun), NGC 404. For the first time, radio emission at frequencies above 1.4 GHz has been detected in this galaxy. We found a modestly resolved source in the NGC 404 nucleus with a total radio luminosity of 7.6 +/- 0.7 x 10^17 W/Hz at 5 GHz and a spectral index from 5 to 7.45 GHz of alpha = -0.88 +/- 0.30. NGC 404 is only the third central intermediate mass black hole candidate detected in the radio…
NGC 2617 is a nearby ($z\sim 0.01$) active galaxy that recently switched from being a Seyfert 1.8 to be a Seyfert 1.0. At the same time, it underwent a strong increase of X-ray flux by one order of magnitude with respect to archival measurements. We characterise the X-ray spectral and timing properties of NGC 2617 with the aim of studying the physics of a changing-look active galactic nucleus (AGN). We performed a comprehensive timing and spectral analysis of two XMM-Newton pointed observations spaced by one month, complemented by archival quasi-simultaneous INTEGRAL observations. We found tha…
We determine the dynamical black hole mass in NGC404 including modeling of the nuclear stellar populations. We combine \hst/STIS spectroscopy with WFC3 images to create a local color-\ml~relation derived from stellar population modeling of the STIS data. We then use this to create a mass model for the nuclear region. We use Jeans modeling to fit this mass model to adaptive optics stellar kinematic observations from Gemini/NIFS. From our stellar dynamical modeling, we find a 3$σ$ upper limit on the black hole mass of $1.5\times10^5$\Msun.
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 2 observations of CO(2-1) emission from the circumnuclear disks in two early-type galaxies, NGC 1380 and NGC 6861. The disk in each galaxy is highly inclined ($i\,{\sim}\,75^{\circ}$), and the projected velocities of the molecular gas near the galaxy centers are ${\sim}300\,\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ in NGC 1380 and ${\sim}500\,\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ in NGC 6861. We fit thin disk dynamical models to the ALMA data cubes to constrain the masses of the central black holes (BHs). We created host galaxy models using Hubble Space Teles…
The formation of supermassive black holes at high redshift still remains a puzzle to astronomers. Their growth becomes reasonable only when starting from a massive seed black hole with mass of the order of 10^2 - 10^5 M_SUN. Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are therefore an important field of research. Especially the possibility of finding them in the centers of globular clusters has recently drawn attention. The search for IMBHs in the centers of globular clusters could therefore shed light on the process of black-hole formation and cluster evolution. We are investigating six galactic gl…
The nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 1277 is thought to host one of the largest black holes known, however the black hole mass measurement is based on low spatial resolution spectroscopy. In this paper, we present Gemini Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrometer observations assisted by adaptive optics. We map out the galaxy's stellar kinematics within ~440 pc of the nucleus with an angular resolution that allows us to probe well within the region where the potential from the black hole dominates. We find that the stellar velocity dispersion rises dramatically, reaching ~550 km/s at the center. Th…
The Chandra X-ray Observatory's Cycle 18 Large Program titled "Spiral galaxies of the Virgo Cluster" will image 52 galaxies with the ACIS-S detector. Combined with archival data for an additional 22 galaxies, this will represent the complete sample of 74 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster with star-formation rates $\gtrsim$ 0.3 $M_{\odot}$/yr. Many of these galaxies are expected to have an active nucleus, signalling the presence of a central black hole. In preparation for this survey, we predict the central black hole masses using the latest black hole scaling relations based on spiral arm p…
We improve the dynamical black hole (BH) mass estimates in three nearby low-mass early-type galaxies--NGC 205, NGC 5102, and NGC 5206. We use new \hst/STIS spectroscopy to fit the star formation histories of the nuclei in these galaxies, and use these measurements to create local color--mass-to-light ratio (\ml) relations. We then create new mass models from \hst~imaging and combined with adaptive optics kinematics, we use Jeans dynamical models to constrain their BH masses. The masses of the central BHs in NGC 5102 and NGC 5206 are both below one million solar masses and are consistent with o…
We explore the nucleus of the nearby 10$^9M_{\odot}$~early-type galaxy (ETGs), NGC~404, using Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/STIS spectroscopy and WFC3 imaging. We first present evidence for nuclear variability in UV, optical, and infrared filters over a time period of 15~years. This variability adds to the already substantial evidence for an accreting black hole at the center of NGC~404. We then redetermine the dynamical black hole mass in NGC~404 including modeling of the nuclear stellar populations. We combine HST/STIS spectroscopy with WFC3 images to create a local color-$M/L$~relation deriv…
The vast majority of optically identified active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local Universe reside in host galaxies with prominent bulges, supporting the hypothesis that black hole formation and growth is fundamentally connected to the build-up of galaxy bulges. However, recent mid-infrared spectroscopic studies with Spitzer of a sample of optically "normal" late-type galaxies reveal remarkably the presence of high-ionization [NeV] lines in several sources, providing strong evidence for AGNs in these galaxies. We present follow-up X-ray observations recently obtained with XMM-Newton of two s…
In this work we perform a Bayesian statistical fit to estimate the mass-to-distance ratio and the recessional redshift of 10 different black holes hosted at the centre of active galactic nuclei, namely the galaxies NGC 5765b, NGC 6323, UGC 3789, CGCG 074-064, ESO 558-G009, NGC 2960, NGC 6264, NGC 4388, J0437+2456 and NGC 2273. Our general relativistic method makes use of the positions in the sky and frequency shift observations of water megamasers circularly orbiting the central black hole on their accretion disks. This approach also allows us to quantify the gravitational redshift which is no…
Dalessandro et al. observed a similar distribution for blue straggler stars and main-sequence turn-off stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6101, and interpreted this feature as an indication that this cluster is not mass-segregated. Using direct N-body simulations, we find that a significant amount of mass segregation is expected for a cluster with the mass, radius and age of NGC 6101. Therefore, the absence of mass segregation cannot be explained by the argument that the cluster is not yet dynamically evolved. By varying the retention fraction of stellar-mass black holes, we show that …
Galaxies can grow through their mutual gravitational attraction and subsequent union. While orbiting a regular high-surface-brightness galaxy, the body of a low-mass galaxy can be stripped away. However, the stellar heart of the infalling galaxy, if represented by a tightly-bound nuclear star cluster, is more resilient. From archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have discovered a red, tidally-stretched star cluster positioned ~5 arcseconds (~400 pc in projection) from, and pointing toward the center of, the post-merger spiral galaxy NGC 4424. The star cluster, which we refer to as `Nikhul…
The main idea of our research is to estimate the physical coalescence time of the double supermassive black hole (SMBH) system in the centre of NGC 6240 based on the X-ray observations from the Chandra space observatory. The spectra of the Northern and Southern nuclei were fitted by spectral models from Sherpa and both presented the narrow component of the Fe K$α$ emission line. It enabled us to apply the spectral model to these lines and to find relative offset $\approx0.02$ keV. The enclosed dynamical mass of the central region of NGC 6240 with radius 1 kpc was estimated $\approx 2.04\times …
A sub-set of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), with X-ray luminosities well above $10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, typically have energy spectra which can be well described as hard power-laws, and short-term variability in excess of $\sim10\%$. This combination of properties suggests that these ULXs may be some of the best candidates to host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs), which would be accreting at sub-Eddington rates in the hard state seen in Galactic X-ray binaries. In this work, we present a temporal and spectral analysis of all of the available XMM-Newton data from one such…
NGC 253 is a nearby starburst galaxy in the Sculptor group located at a distance of 3.5 Mpc that has been suggested by some authors as a potential site for cosmic-ray acceleration up to ultra-high energies. Its nuclear region is heavily obscured by gas and dust, which prevents establishing whether or not the galaxy harbours a supermassive black hole coexisting with the starburst. Some sources have been proposed in the literature as candidates for an active nucleus. In this work, we aim at determining the implications that the presence of a supermassive black hole at the nucleus of NGC 253 migh…
We present an astrometric study of the proper motions (PMs) in the core of the globular cluster NGC 6441. The core of this cluster has a high density and observations with current instrumentation are very challenging. We combine ground-based, high-angular-resolution NACO@VLT images with Hubble Space Telescope ACS/HRC data and measure PMs with a temporal baseline of 15 yr for about 1400 stars in the centermost 15 arcseconds of the cluster. We reach a PM precision of $\sim$30 $μ$as yr$^{-1}$ for bright, well-measured stars. Our results for the velocity dispersion are in good agreement with other…
We report the discovery of a ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX; CXO J133815.6+043255) in NGC 5252. This ULX is an off-nuclear point-source, which is 22$^{\prime\prime}$ away from the center of NGC 5252, and has an X-ray luminosity of 1.5 $\times$ $10^{40}$erg s$^{-1}$. It is one of the rare examples of ULX, which exhibits clear counterparts in radio, optical, UV bands. Follow-up optical spectrum of the ULX shows strong emission lines. The redshift of [O III] emission line coincides with the systematic velocity of NGC 5252, suggesting the ULX is gravitationally bound to NGC 5252. The flux of [O I…
The active galaxy NGC 4151 has a crucial role as one of only two active galactic nuclei for which black hole mass measurements based on emission line reverberation mapping can be calibrated against other dynamical methods. Unfortunately, effective calibration requires an accurate distance to NGC 4151, which is currently not available. Recently reported distances range from 4 to 29 megaparsecs (Mpc). Strong peculiar motions make a redshift-based distance very uncertain, and the geometry of the galaxy and its nucleus prohibit accurate measurements using other techniques. Here we report a dust-pa…
The active galaxy NGC 1275 lies at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, being an archetypal BH-galaxy system that is supposed to fit well with the M_BH-host scaling relations obtained for quiescent galaxies. Since it harbours an obscured AGN, only recently our group has been able to estimate its black hole mass. Here our aim is to pinpoint NGC 1275 on the less dispersed scaling relations, namely the M_BH-sigma_star and M_BH-L_bul planes. Starting from our previous work Ricci et al. 2017b, we estimate that NGC 1275 falls well outside the intrinsic dispersion of the M_BH-sigma_star pla…
The nearby galaxy NGC 3115 contains a known radio-emitting, low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN), and was recently claimed to host a candidate AGN displaced 14.3 pc from the galaxy's optical photocenter. Our goal is to understand whether this represents a single offset AGN, an AGN in orbit around a central black hole, or something else. We present a new, sensitive (RMS = 4.4 $μ$Jy beam$^{-1}$) 10 GHz image, which finds evidence for only one AGN. We place a stringent limit on the radio luminosity of any secondary supermassive black hole of $L_{10~\rm{GHz}}<5.8\times10^{33}$ ergs/s. An a…
[abridged] Theoretical investigations have suggested the presence of Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBHs, with masses in the 100-10000 Msun range) in the cores of some Globular Clusters (GCs). In this paper we present the first application of a new technique to determine the presence or absence of a central IMBH in globular clusters that have reached energy equipartition via two-body relaxation. The method is based on the measurement of the radial profile for the average mass of stars in the system, using the fact that a quenching of mass segregation is expected when an IMBH is present. Here …
NGC~6946, also known as the `Fireworks' galaxy, is an unusual galaxy that hosts a total of 225 supernova remnant (SNR) candidates, including 147 optically identified with high [SII]/Ha line ratios. In addition, this galaxy shows prominent HI holes, which were analyzed in previous studies. Indeed, the connection between SNRs and HI holes together with their physical implications in the surrounding gas is worth of attention. This paper explores the connection between the SNRs and the HI holes, including an analysis of their physical link to observational optical properties inside and around the …
We obtained adaptive-optics assisted SINFONI observations of the central regions of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC5419 with a spatial resolution of 0.2 arcsec ($\approx 55$ pc). NGC5419 has a large depleted stellar core with a radius of 1.58 arcsec (430 pc). HST and SINFONI images show a point source located at the galaxy's photocentre, which is likely associated with the low-luminosity AGN previously detected in NGC5419. Both the HST and SINFONI images also show a second nucleus, off-centred by 0.25 arcsec ($\approx 70$ pc). Outside of the central double nucleus, we measure an almost constan…
Intermediate-mass black holes are theoretically predicted but observationally elusive, and evidence for them is often indirect. The nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC3310 has hosted many supernovae in recent history, and recent Chandra observations have shown a group of strong off-nuclear X-ray sources that are coincident with radio emission seen in archival VLA and MERLIN observations. Their luminosity, spectrum and off-nuclear location make these sources excellent IMBH candidates. To investigate this possibility, we used combined EVN/e-MERLIN observations at both 1.4 and 5 GHz to look for comp…
We present a detailed study of the nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and massive black holes (BHs) of four of the nearest low-mass early-type galaxies: M32, NGC205, NGC5012, and NGC5206. We measure dynamical masses of both the BHs and NSCs in these galaxies using Gemini/NIFS or VLT/SINFONI stellar kinematics, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, and Jeans Anisotropic Models. We detect massive BHs in M32, NGC5102, and NGC5206, while in NGC205, we find only an upper limit. These BH mass estimates are consistent with previous measurements in M32 and NGC205, while those in NGC5102 and NGC5206 are esti…
We compare the results of a large grid of N-body simulations with the surface brightness and velocity dispersion profiles of the globular clusters $ω$ Cen and NGC 6624. Our models include clusters with varying stellar-mass black hole retention fractions and varying masses of a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We find that an $\sim 45,000$ M$_\odot$ IMBH, whose presence has been suggested based on the measured velocity dispersion profile of $ω$ Cen, predicts the existence of about 20 fast-moving, $m>0.5$ M$_\odot$ main-sequence stars with a (1D) velocity $v>60$ km/sec in the central…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 3 observations of CO(2-1) emission from the circumnuclear disk in the E/S0 galaxy NGC 1332 at 0.044" resolution. The disk exhibits regular rotational kinematics and central high-velocity emission (+/-500 km/s) consistent with the presence of a compact central mass. We construct models for a thin, dynamically cold disk in the gravitational potential of the host galaxy and black hole, and fit the beam-smeared model line profiles directly to the ALMA data cube. Model fits successfully reproduce the disk kinematics out to r=200 p…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 5 and Cycle 6 observations of CO(2$-$1) and CO(3$-$2) emission at 0.2''$-$0.3'' resolution in two radio-bright, brightest group/cluster early-type galaxies, NGC 315 and NGC 4261. The data resolve CO emission that extends within their black hole (BH) spheres of influence ($r_\mathrm{g}$), tracing regular Keplerian rotation down to just tens of parsecs from the BHs. The projected molecular gas speeds in the highly inclined ($i>60^\circ$) disks rises at least 500 km s$^{-1}$ near their galaxy centers. We fit dynamical models of …
[abridged] We present observations of NGC524 and NGC2549 with LGS AO obtained at GEMINI North telescope using the NIFS IFU in the K band. The purpose of these observations, together with previously obtained observations with the SAURON IFU, is to determine the masses (Mbh) of the supermassive black holes (SMBH). The targeted galaxies were chosen to have central light profiles showing a core (NGC524) and a cusp (NGC2549), to probe the feasibility of using the galaxy centre as the NGS required for LGS AO. We employ an innovative `open loop' technique. The data have spatial resolution of 0.23" an…
We present an estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby type-1 Seyfert galaxy \object{NGC 1097} using Atacamma Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of dense gas kinematics. Dense molecular gas dynamics are traced with ${\rm HCN} (J=1-0)$ and ${\rm HCO^{+}} (J=1-0)$ emission lines. Assuming a host galaxy inclination of $46^{\circ}$, we derive a SMBH mass, $M_{\rm BH}=1.40^{+0.27}_{-0.32} \times 10^{8}M_{\odot}$, and an I-band mass to light ratio to be $5.14^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$, using ${\rm HCN} (J=1-0)$. The estimated parameters are consistent bet…
While spiral and lenticular galaxies have large-scale disks extending beyond their bulges, and most local early-type galaxies with 10^{10} < M_*/M_Sun < 2x10^{11} contain a disk (e.g., ATLAS^3D), the early-type galaxies do possess a range of disk sizes. The edge-on, `intermediate-scale' disk in the `disky elliptical' galaxy NGC 1271 has led to some uncertainty as to what its spheroidal component is. Walsh et al. reported a directly measured black hole mass of 3x10^9 M_Sun for this galaxy; which they remarked was an order of magnitude greater than what they expected based on their derivation of…
Theoretical models and numerical simulations have established a framework of galaxy evolution in which galaxies merge and create dual supermassive black holes (with separations of one to ten kiloparsecs), which eventually sink into the centre of the merger remnant, emit gravitational waves and coalesce. The merger also triggers star formation and supermassive black hole growth, and gas outflows regulate the stellar content. Although this theoretical picture is supported by recent observations of starburst-driven and supermassive black hole-driven outflows, it remains unclear how these outflows…
We construct from first principles a general relativistic approach to study Schwarzschild black hole (BH) rotation curves and estimate the mass-to-distance ratio of the active galactic nucleus of NGC 4258 in terms of astrophysical observable quantities. The presented method allows one to clearly distinguish and quantify the general and special relativistic contributions to the total redshift expression. The total relativistic redshift/blueshift comprises three components: the gravitational redshift due to the spacetime curvature generated by the mass of the BH in its vicinity, the kinematic sh…
We present a new stellar dynamical mass measurement ($M_\mathrm{BH}$) of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in NGC 1453, a fast-rotating massive elliptical galaxy in the MASSIVE survey. We measure stellar kinematics in 135 spatial bins in the central 1.5 kpc by 2 kpc region of the galaxy using high signal-to-noise ($S/N \sim 130$) spectra from the Gemini-North GMOS integral-field spectrograph (IFS). Combining with wide-field IFS kinematics out to $\sim 3$ effective radii and stellar light distributions from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 images, we perform Schwarzschild orbit-based mass mod…
We estimate the mass of the intermediate-mass black hole at the heart of the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 404 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the molecular interstellar medium at an unprecedented linear resolution of ~0.5 pc, in combination with existing stellar kinematic information. These ALMA observations reveal a central disc/torus of molecular gas clearly rotating around the black hole. This disc is surrounded by a morphologically and kinematically complex flocculent distribution of molecular clouds, that we resolve in detail. Continuum emission is…
We analyze proper motions from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the second Gaia data release along with line-of-sight velocities from the MUSE spectrograph to detect imprints of an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in the center of the nearby, core-collapsed, globular cluster NGC 6397. For this, we use the new MAMPOSSt-PM Bayesian mass-modeling code, along with updated estimates of the surface density profile of NGC 6397. We consider different priors on velocity anisotropy and on the size of the central mass, and we also separate the stars into components of different mean mass to allow …
