The predictions for the atmospheric neutrino flux at high energies strongly depend on the contribution of prompt neutrinos, which are determined by the production of charmed meson in the atmosphere at very forward rapidities. In this paper we estimate the related cross sections taking into account the presence of an intrinsic charm (IC) component in the proton wave function and the QCD dynamics modified by the onset of saturation effects. The impact on the predictions for the prompt neutrino flux is investigated assuming different values for the probability to find the IC in the nucleon. Comparison with the IceCube data is performed and conclusions are drawn.
We investigate the prompt neutrino background at IceCube, as determined from forward charm. We consider the role of intrinsic charm and of a recombination model and show that the contribution of these mechanisms is at most a factor two.

The discovery of extraterrestrial neutrinos in the $\sim$ 30 TeV -- PeV energy range by IceCube provides new constraints on high energy astrophysics. An important background to the signal are the prompt neutrinos which originate from the decay of charm hadrons produced by high energy cosmic-ray particles interacting in the Earth's atmosphere. It is conventional to use the calculations of charm hadroproduction using gluon splitting $g \to c \bar c$ alone. However, QCD predicts an additional "intrinsic" component of the heavy quark distribution which arises from diagrams where heavy quarks are m…
At very-high energies (100 TeV - 1 PeV), the small value of Bjorken-x ($\le10^{-3}-10^{-7}$) at which the parton distribution functions are evaluated makes the calculation of charm quark production very difficult. The charm quark has mass ($\sim$1.5$\pm$0.2 GeV) significantly above the $Λ$$_{QCD}$ scale ($\sim$200 MeV), and therefore its production is perturbatively calculable. However, the uncertainty in the data and the calculations cannot exclude some smaller non-perturbative contribution. To evaluate the prompt neutrino flux, one needs to know the charm production cross-section in pN -> c$…
Deep inelastic scattering of very high-energy neutrinos can potentially be enhanced by the production of a single top quark or charm quark via the interaction of a virtual $W$-boson exchange with a $b$-quark or $s$-quark parton in the nucleon. The single top contribution shows a sharp rise at neutrino energies above 0.5 PeV and gives a cross-section contribution of order 5 percent at 10 PeV, while single charm has a low energy threshold and contributes about 25 percent. Semi-leptonic decays of top and charm give di-muon events whose kinematic characteristics are shown. The angular separation o…

We revisit the calculation of charm particle production in hadron collisions, focusing on the production of charm particles that carry a large fraction of the momentum of the incident proton. In the case of strange particles, such a component is familiar from the abundant production of $K^+Λ$ pairs. Modern collider experiments have no coverage in the very large rapidity region where the forward pair production dominates. While forward charm particles are produced inside the LHC beampipe, they dominate the high-energy atmospheric neutrino flux in underground experiments because long-lived pions…
We revisit the estimate of the charm particle contribution to the atmospheric neutrino flux that is expected to dominate at high energies because long-lived high-energy pions and kaons interact in the atmosphere before decaying into neutrinos. Prompt neutrinos due to the decay of charmed mesons produced in the atmosphere from cosmic-ray and atmospheric nuclei interactions may be a significant source of background to ultra-high energy neutrino searches above 10 TeV. We re-evaluate this flux using updated charm production cross-sections based on QCD parameters, the charm quark mass, and the range for the factorization and renormalization scales that provide the best description of this data at fixed target experiments, at RHIC, and at LHC. We find that the prompt neutrino flux is reduced from previous results in the literature by a fa…
The description of the heavy meson production at large energies and forward rapidities at the LHC is fundamental to derive realistic predictions of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at the IceCube Observatory. In particular, the prompt tau neutrino flux is determined by the decay of $D_s$ mesons produced in cosmic ray - air interactions at high energies and large values of the Feynman - $x_F$ variable. Recent data from the LHCb Collaboration indicate a production asymmetry for $D_s^+$ and $D_s^-$ mesons, which cannot be explained in terms of the standard modelling of the hadronization proce…
Dimuon events induced by charm-quark productions from neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes have been studied in traditional DIS experiments for decades. The recent progress in neutrino telescopes makes it possible to search such dimuon events at energies far beyond laboratory scale. In this paper, we construct a simulation framework to calculate yields and distributions of dimuon signals in an IceCube-like km3 scale neutrino telescope. Due to experimental limitation in the resolution of double-track lateral distance, only dimuon produced outside the detector volume are considered…
IceCube Neutrino Astronomy is considered. The tau neutrino flavor paucity and the asymmetry for the tracks suggest a dominant atmospheric charm noise. The correlated cascades and tracks asymmetry with relevant statistics enforce the charm noise dominance in the data. The charm signal may explain at once the absence of correlation for the tracks data with the galactic plane and with known brightest gamma sources.
We present predictions for the prompt-neutrino flux arising from the decay of charmed mesons and baryons produced by the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere, making use of a QCD approach on the basis of the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme for the description of charm hadroproduction at NLO, complemented by a consistent set of fragmentation functions. We compare the theoretical results to those already obtained by our and other groups with different theoretical approaches. We provide comparisons with the experimental results obtained by the IceCube Colla…
The recent observation of very high energy cosmic neutrinos by IceCube heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At these energies, the dominant background to the astrophysical signal is the flux of `prompt' neutrinos, arising from the decay of charmed mesons produced by cosmic ray collisions in the atmosphere. In this work we provide predictions for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux in the framework of perturbative QCD, using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generators. Our calculation includes the constraints set by charm production measurements from the LHCb experiment at 7 TeV, and…

This same scheme is used for the description of charm hadroproduction at both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. We compare the theoretical predictions to those already obtained b…
In this work we investigate the impact of intrinsic charm on the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux. The color dipole approach to heavy quark production is generalized to include the contribution of processes initiated by charm quarks. The prompt neutrino flux is calculated assuming the presence of intrinsic charm in the wave function of the projetile hadron. The predictions are compared with previous color dipole results which were obtained taking into account only the process initiated by gluons. In addition, we estimate the atmospheric (conventional + prompt) neutrino flux and compare our pre…
We calculate the atmospheric flux of prompt neutrinos, produced in decays of the charmed particles at energies beyond 1 TeV. Cross sections of the $D$-mesons and $Λ^{+}_{c}$ baryons production in pA and $π$A collisions are calculated in the phenomenological quark-gluon string model (QGSM) which is updated using of the recent measurements of cross sections of the charmed meson production in the LHC experiments. A new estimate of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux is obtained and compared with the limit of the IceCube experiment as well as with predictions of other charm production models.
We study $D$ - meson production at forward rapidities taking into account the non - linear effects in the QCD dynamics and the intrinsic charm component of the proton wave function. The total cross section, the rapidity distributions and the Feynman - $x$ distributions are calculated for $p p$ collisions at different center of mass energies. Our results show that, at the LHC, the intrinsic charm component changes the $D$ rapidity distributions in a region which is beyond the coverage of the LHCb detectors. At higher energies the IC component dominates the $y$ and $x_F$ distributions exactly in…
Newborn, strongly magnetized neutron stars (so-called magnetars) surrounded by their stellar or merger ejecta are expected to be sources of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos via decay of mesons produced in hadronic interactions of protons which are accelerated to ultrahigh energies by magnetic dissipation of the spindown energy. We show that not only pions and kaons but also charm hadrons, which are typically neglected due to their small production cross sections, can represent dominant contributions to neutrino fluence at ultrahigh energies, because of their short lifetimes, while the ultrahigh-ener…
Recently the atmospheric muon spectra at high energies were reconstructed for two ranges of zenith angles, basing on the events collected with the IceCube detector. These measurements reach high energies at which the contribution to atmospheric muon fluxes from decays of short-lived hadrons is expected. Latest IceCube measurements of the high-energy atmospheric muon spectrum indicate the presence of prompt muon component at energies above 500 TeV. In this work, the atmospheric conventional muon flux in the energy range 10 GeV - 10 PeV is calculated using a set of hadronic models in combination…
We evaluate the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at high energies using three different frameworks for calculating the heavy quark production cross section in QCD: NLO perturbative QCD, $k_T$ factorization including low-$x$ resummation, and the dipole model including parton saturation. We use QCD parameters, the value for the charm quark mass and the range for the factorization and renormalization scales that provide the best description of the total charm cross section measured at fixed target experiments, at RHIC and at LHC. Using these parameters we calculate differential cross sections for…
Statistical analysis is performed of the atmospheric neutrino flux models as compared with the data of Frejus, AMANDA-II, IceCube, ANTARES, and Super-Kamiokande experiments. The analysis enables the evaluation of the confidence level of the flux models in comparison with atmospheric neutrino flux measurements. The flux calculations were performed in the framework of single computational scheme using a set of hadronic models combined with parameterizations of the cosmic rays spectrum by Zatsepin & Sokolskaya, and Hillas & Gaisser. The analysis showed satisfactory agreement of the conventional $…
The atmospheric neutrino flux includes a component from the prompt decay of charmed hadrons that becomes significant only at $E\ge 10$ TeV. At these energies, however, the diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos discovered by IceCube seems to be larger than the atmospheric one. Here we study the possibility to detect a neutrino interaction in down-going atmospheric events at km$^3$ telescopes. The neutrino signal will always appear together with a muon bundle that reveals its atmospheric origin and, generically, it implies an increase in the detector activity with the slant depth. We propose a simple…
