Currently, spatiotemporal features are embraced by most deep learning approaches for human action detection in videos, however, they neglect the important features in frequency domain. In this work, we propose an end-to-end network that considers the time and frequency features simultaneously, named TFNet. TFNet holds two branches, one is time branch formed of three-dimensional convolutional neural network(3D-CNN), which takes the image sequence as input to extract time features; and the other is frequency branch, extracting frequency features through two-dimensional convolutional neural network(2D-CNN) from DCT coefficients. Finally, to obtain the action patterns, these two features are deeply fused under the attention mechanism. Experimental results on the JHMDB51-21 and UCF101-24 datasets demonstrate that our approach achieves remarkable performance for frame-mAP.

State-of-the-art temporal action detectors inefficiently search the entire video for specific actions. Despite the encouraging progress these methods achieve, it is crucial to design automated approaches that only explore parts of the video which are the most relevant to the actions being searched for. To address this need, we propose the new problem of action spotting in video, which we define as finding a specific action in a video while observing a small portion of that video. Inspired by the observation that humans are extremely efficient and accurate in spotting and finding action instanc…
Spatio-temporal action detection is an important and challenging problem in video understanding. However, the application of the existing large-scale spatio-temporal action datasets in specific fields is limited, and there is currently no public tool for making spatio-temporal action datasets, it takes a lot of time and effort for researchers to customize the spatio-temporal action datasets, so we propose a multi-Person video dataset Annotation Method of spatio-temporally actions.First, we use ffmpeg to crop the videos and frame the videos; then use yolov5 to detect human in the video frame, a…
Current fully-supervised video datasets consist of only a few hundred thousand videos and fewer than a thousand domain-specific labels. This hinders the progress towards advanced video architectures. This paper presents an in-depth study of using large volumes of web videos for pre-training video models for the task of action recognition. Our primary empirical finding is that pre-training at a very large scale (over 65 million videos), despite on noisy social-media videos and hashtags, substantially improves the state-of-the-art on three challenging public action recognition datasets. Further,…

The recent development of commodity 360$^{\circ}$ cameras have enabled a single video to capture an entire scene, which endows promising potentials in surveillance scenarios. However, research in omnidirectional video analysis has lagged behind the hardware advances. In this work, we address the important problem of action recognition in top-view 360$^{\circ}$ videos. Due to the wide filed-of-view, 360$^{\circ}$ videos usually capture multiple people performing actions at the same time. Furthermore, the appearance of people are deformed. The proposed framework first transforms omnidirectional …

In this paper we address the problem of automatically discovering atomic actions in unsupervised manner from instructional videos, which are rarely annotated with atomic actions. We present an unsupervised approach to learn atomic actions of structured human tasks from a variety of instructional videos based on a sequential stochastic autoregressive model for temporal segmentation of videos. This learns to represent and discover the sequential relationship between different atomic actions of the task, and which provides automatic and unsupervised self-labeling.

Currently, action recognition is predominately performed on video data as processed by CNNs. We investigate if the representation process of CNNs can also be leveraged for multimodal action recognition by incorporating image-based audio representations of actions in a task. To this end, we propose Multimodal Audio-Image and Video Action Recognizer (MAiVAR), a CNN-based audio-image to video fusion model that accounts for video and audio modalities to achieve superior action recognition performance. MAiVAR extracts meaningful image representations of audio and fuses it with video representation …
Video action recognition, which is topical in computer vision and video analysis, aims to allocate a short video clip to a pre-defined category such as brushing hair or climbing stairs. Recent works focus on action recognition with deep neural networks that achieve state-of-the-art results in need of high-performance platforms. Despite the fast development of mobile computing, video action recognition on mobile devices has not been fully discussed. In this paper, we focus on the novel mobile video action recognition task, where only the computational capabilities of mobile devices are accessib…
Understanding human behavior and activity facilitates advancement of numerous real-world applications, and is critical for video analysis. Despite the progress of action recognition algorithms in trimmed videos, the majority of real-world videos are lengthy and untrimmed with sparse segments of interest. The task of temporal activity detection in untrimmed videos aims to localize the temporal boundary of actions and classify the action categories. Temporal activity detection task has been investigated in full and limited supervision settings depending on the availability of action annotations.…

This paper introduces a new video-and-language dataset with human actions for multimodal logical inference, which focuses on intentional and aspectual expressions that describe dynamic human actions. The dataset consists of 200 videos, 5,554 action labels, and 1,942 action triplets of the form <subject, predicate, object> that can be translated into logical semantic representations. The dataset is expected to be useful for evaluating multimodal inference systems between videos and semantically complicated sentences including negation and quantification.
In this paper, we propose a data augmentation method for action recognition using instance segmentation. Although many data augmentation methods have been proposed for image recognition, few of them are tailored for action recognition. Our proposed method, ObjectMix, extracts each object region from two videos using instance segmentation and combines them to create new videos. Experiments on two action recognition datasets, UCF101 and HMDB51, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show its superiority over VideoMix, a prior work.

Recognising actions in videos relies on labelled supervision during training, typically the start and end times of each action instance. This supervision is not only subjective, but also expensive to acquire. Weak video-level supervision has been successfully exploited for recognition in untrimmed videos, however it is challenged when the number of different actions in training videos increases. We propose a method that is supervised by single timestamps located around each action instance, in untrimmed videos. We replace expensive action bounds with sampling distributions initialised from the…
Static image action recognition, which aims to recognize action based on a single image, usually relies on expensive human labeling effort such as adequate labeled action images and large-scale labeled image dataset. In contrast, abundant unlabeled videos can be economically obtained. Therefore, several works have explored using unlabeled videos to facilitate image action recognition, which can be categorized into the following two groups: (a) enhance visual representations of action images with a designed proxy task on unlabeled videos, which falls into the scope of self-supervised learning; …

In this paper we address the problem of automatically discovering atomic actions in unsupervised manner from instructional videos. Instructional videos contain complex activities and are a rich source of information for intelligent agents, such as, autonomous robots or virtual assistants, which can, for example, automatically `read' the steps from an instructional video and execute them. However, videos are rarely annotated with atomic activities, their boundaries or duration. We present an unsupervised approach to learn atomic actions of structured human tasks from a variety of instructional …

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end capsule network for pixel level localization of actors and actions present in a video. The localization is performed based on a natural language query through which an actor and action are specified. We propose to encode both the video as well as textual input in the form of capsules, which provide more effective representation in comparison with standard convolution based features. We introduce a novel capsule based attention mechanism for fusion of video and text capsules for text selected video segmentation. The attention mechanism is performed via jo…
In this paper, we propose a study on multi-modal (audio and video) action spotting and classification in soccer videos. Action spotting and classification are the tasks that consist in finding the temporal anchors of events in a video and determine which event they are. This is an important application of general activity understanding. Here, we propose an experimental study on combining audio and video information at different stages of deep neural network architectures. We used the SoccerNet benchmark dataset, which contains annotated events for 500 soccer game videos from the Big Five Europ…

Most recent approaches for action recognition from video leverage deep architectures to encode the video clip into a fixed length representation vector that is then used for classification. For this to be successful, the network must be capable of suppressing irrelevant scene background and extract the representation from the most discriminative part of the video. Our contribution builds on the observation that spatio-temporal patterns characterizing actions in videos are highly correlated with objects and their location in the video. We propose Top-down Attention Action VLAD (TA-VLAD), a deep…
We present LARNet, a novel end-to-end approach for generating human action videos. A joint generative modeling of appearance and dynamics to synthesize a video is very challenging and therefore recent works in video synthesis have proposed to decompose these two factors. However, these methods require a driving video to model the video dynamics. In this work, we propose a generative approach instead, which explicitly learns action dynamics in latent space avoiding the need of a driving video during inference. The generated action dynamics is integrated with the appearance using a recurrent hie…
The field of automatic video generation has received a boost thanks to the recent Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). However, most existing methods cannot control the contents of the generated video using a text caption, losing their usefulness to a large extent. This particularly affects human videos due to their great variety of actions and appearances. This paper presents Conditional Flow and Texture GAN (CFT-GAN), a GAN-based video generation method from action-appearance captions. We propose a novel way of generating video by encoding a caption (e.g., "a man in blue jeans is playing …
This paper strives for pixel-level segmentation of actors and their actions in video content. Different from existing works, which all learn to segment from a fixed vocabulary of actor and action pairs, we infer the segmentation from a natural language input sentence. This allows to distinguish between fine-grained actors in the same super-category, identify actor and action instances, and segment pairs that are outside of the actor and action vocabulary. We propose a fully-convolutional model for pixel-level actor and action segmentation using an encoder-decoder architecture optimized for vid…
Human actions in videos are 3D signals. However, there are a few methods available for multiple human action recognition. For long videos, it's difficult to search within a video for a specific action and/or person. For that, this paper proposes a new technic for multiple human action recognition and summarization for surveillance videos. The proposed approach proposes a new representation of the data by extracting the sequence of each person from the scene. This is followed by an analysis of each sequence to detect and recognize the corresponding actions using 3D convolutional neural networks…

We propose TubeR: a simple solution for spatio-temporal video action detection. Different from existing methods that depend on either an off-line actor detector or hand-designed actor-positional hypotheses like proposals or anchors, we propose to directly detect an action tubelet in a video by simultaneously performing action localization and recognition from a single representation. TubeR learns a set of tubelet-queries and utilizes a tubelet-attention module to model the dynamic spatio-temporal nature of a video clip, which effectively reinforces the model capacity compared to using actor-po…
Video processing has become a popular research direction in computer vision due to its various applications such as video summarization, action recognition, etc. Recently, deep learning-based methods have achieved impressive results in action recognition. However, these methods need to process a full video sequence to recognize the action, even though most of these frames are similar and non-essential to recognizing a particular action. Additionally, these non-essential frames increase the computational cost and can confuse a method in action recognition. Instead, the important frames called k…

Not all video frames are equally informative for recognizing an action. It is computationally infeasible to train deep networks on all video frames when actions develop over hundreds of frames. A common heuristic is uniformly sampling a small number of video frames and using these to recognize the action. Instead, here we propose full video action recognition and consider all video frames. To make this computational tractable, we first cluster all frame activations along the temporal dimension based on their similarity with respect to the classification task, and then temporally aggregate the …

In this work, we present a novel hybrid dynAmic-static Context-aware attenTION NETwork (ACTION-NET) for action assessment in long videos. To learn more discriminative representations for videos, we not only learn the video dynamic information but also focus on the static postures of the detected athle…

Detecting representative frames in videos based on human actions is quite challenging because of the combined factors of human pose in action and the background. This paper addresses this problem and formulates the key frame detection as one of finding the video frames that optimally maximally contribute to differentiating the underlying action category from all other categories. To this end, we introduce a deep two-stream ConvNet for key frame detection in videos that learns to directly predict the location of key frames. Our key idea is to automatically generate labeled data for the CNN lear…

Existing methods in video action recognition mostly do not distinguish human body from the environment and easily overfit the scenes and objects. In this work, we present a conceptually simple, general and high-performance framework for action recognition in trimmed videos, aiming at person-centric modeling. The method, called Action Machine, takes as inputs the videos cropped by person bounding boxes. It extends the Inflated 3D ConvNet (I3D) by adding a branch for human pose estimation and a 2D CNN for pose-based action recognition, being fast to train and test. Action Machine can benefit fro…

In this work, we focus on semi-supervised learning for video action detection which utilizes both labeled as well as unlabeled data. We propose a simple end-to-end consistency based approach which effectively utilizes the unlabeled data. Video action detection requires both, action class prediction as well as a spatio-temporal localization of actions. Therefore, we investigate two types of constraints, classification consistency, and spatio-temporal consistency. The presence of predominant background and static regions in a video makes it challenging to utilize spatio-temporal consistency for …
Action anticipation and forecasting in videos do not require a hat-trick, as far as there are signs in the context to foresee how actions are going to be deployed. Capturing these signs is hard because the context includes the past. We propose an end-to-end network for action anticipation and forecasting with memory, to both anticipate the current action and foresee the next one. Experiments on action sequence datasets show excellent results indicating that training on histories with a dynamic memory can significantly improve forecasting performance.
Spatiotemporal action recognition deals with locating and classifying actions in videos. Motivated by the latest state-of-the-art real-time object detector You Only Watch Once (YOWO), we aim to modify its structure to increase action detection precision and reduce computational time. We consider two moderate-sized datasets to apply our modification of YOWO - the popular Joint-annotated Human Motion Data Base (J-HMDB-21) and a private datase…
