In this paper we present some local dynamic bifurcation results in terms of invariant sets of nonlinear evolution equations. We show that if the trivial solution is an isolated invariant set of the system at the critical value $λ=λ_0$, then either there exists a one-sided neighborhood $I^-$ of $λ_0$ such that for each $λ\in I^-$, the system bifurcates from the trivial solution to an isolated nonempty compact invariant set $K_λ$ with $0\not\in K_λ$, or there is a one-sided neighborhood $I^+$ of $λ_0$ such that the system undergoes an attractor bifurcation for $λ\in I^+$ from $(0,λ_0)$. Then we give a modified version of the attractor bifurcation theorem. Finally, we consider the classical Swift-Hohenberg equation and illustrate how to apply our results to a concrete evolution equation.
We study the geometric and topological properties of strange non-chaotic attractors created in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. By interpreting the attractors as limit objects of the iterates of a continuous curve and controlling the geometry of the latter, we determine their Hausdorff and box-counting dimension and show that these take distinct values. Moreover, the same approach allows to describe the topological structure of the attractors and to prove their minimality.
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
We study in this paper global properties, mainly of topological nature, of attractors of discrete dynamical systems. We consider the Andronov-Hopf bifurcation for homeomorphisms of the plane and establish some robustness properties for attractors of such homeomorphisms. We also give relations between attractors of flows and quasi-attractors of homeomorphisms in Rn. Finally, we give a result on the shape (in the sense of Borsuk) of invariant sets of IFSs on the plane, and make some remarks about the recent theory of Conley attractors for IFS.
The dichotomy spectrum is introduced for linear mean-square random dynamical systems, and it is shown that for finite-dimensional mean-field stochastic differential equations, the dichotomy spectrum consists of finitely many compact intervals. It is then demonstrated that a change in the sign of the dichotomy spectrum is associated with a bifurcation from a trivial to a non-trivial mean-square random attractor.
We investigate a diffusive predator-prey model by incorporating the fear effect into prey population, since the fear of predators could visibly reduce the reproduction of prey. By introducing the mature delay as bifurcation parameter, we find this makes the predator-prey system more complicated and usually induces Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations. The formulas determining the properties of Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations by computing the normal form on the center manifold are given. Near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point we give the detailed bifurcation set by investigating the universal unfoldin…
We review the theory of strange attractors and their bifurcations. All known strange attractors may be subdivided into the following three groups: hyperbolic, pseudo-hyperbolic ones and quasi-attractors. For the first ones the description of bifurcations that lead to the appearance of Smale-Williams solenoids and Anosov-type attractors is given. The definition and the description of the attractors of the second class are introduced in the general case. It is pointed out that the main feature of the attractors of this class is that they contain no stable orbits. An etanol example of such pseudo…
In this article we construct the parameter region where the existence of a homoclinic orbit to a zero equilibrium state of saddle type in the Lorenz-like system will be analytically proved in the case of a nonnegative saddle value. Then, for a qualitative description of the different types of homoclinic bifurcations, a numerical analysis of the detected parameter region is carried out to discover several new interesting bifurcation scenarios.
As the parameters of a piecewise-smooth system of ODEs are varied, a periodic orbit undergoes a bifurcation when it collides with a surface where the system is discontinuous. Under certain conditions this is a grazing-sliding bifurcation. Near grazing-sliding bifurcations structurally stable dynamics are captured by piecewise-linear continuous maps. Recently it was shown that maps of this class can have infinitely many asymptotically stable periodic solutions of a simple type. Here this result is used to show that at a grazing-sliding bifurcation an asymptotically stable periodic orbit can bif…
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
We study the Turing-Hopf bifurcation and give a simple and explicit calculation formula of the normal forms for a general two-components system of reaction-diffusion equation with time delays. We declare that our formula can be automated by Matlab. At first, we extend the normal forms method given by Faria in 2000 to Hopf-zero singularity. Then, an explicit formula of the normal forms for Turing-Hopf bifurcation are given. Finally, we obtain the possible attractors of the original system near the Turing-Hopf singularity by the further analysis of the normal forms, which mainly include, the spa…
Nonresonant Hopf-Hopf singularity in neutral functional differential equation (NFDE) is considered. An algorithm for calculating the third-order normal form is established by using the formal adjoint theory, center manifold theorem and the traditional normal form method for RFDE. Van der Pol's equation with extended delay feedback is studied as an example. The unfoldings near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point is given by applying this algorithm. Periodic solutions, quasi-periodic solutions are found via theoretical bifurcation diagram and numerical illustrations. The Hopf-Hopf bifurcation diagra…
We study bifurcation mechanisms for the appearance of hyperchaotic attractors in three-dimensional diffeomorphisms, i.e., such attractors whose orbits have two positive Lyapunov exponents in numerical experiments. In order to possess this property periodic orbits belonging to the attractor should have two-dimensional unstable invariant manifolds. For realization of this possibility, we propose several bifurcation scenarios that include cascades of both supercritical period-doubling bifurcations with saddle periodic orbits and supercritical Neimark-Sacker bifurcations with stable periodic orbit…
The collision of a fixed point with a switching manifold (or border) in a piecewise-smooth map can create many different types of invariant sets. This paper explores two techniques that, combined, establish a chaotic attractor is created in a border-collision bifurcation in $\mathbb{R}^d$ $(d \ge 1)$. First, asymptotic stability of the fixed point at the bifurcation is characterised and shown to imply a local attractor is created. Second, a lower bound on the maximal Lyapunov exponent is obtained from the determinants of the one-sided Jacobian matrices associated with the fixed point. Special …
We propose a general mechanism by which strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) are created during the collision of invariant curves in quasiperiodically forced systems. This mechanism is first discussed on an heuristic level and by means of simulations. In the considered examples, a stable and an unstable invariant circle undergo a saddle-node bifurcation, but instead of a neutral invariant curve there exists a strange non-chaotic attractor-repeller pair at the bifurcation point. This process is accompanied by a very characteristic behaviour of the invariant curves prior to their collision, whic…
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
In diverse physical systems stable oscillatory solutions devolve into more complicated dynamical behaviour through border-collision bifurcations. Mathematically these occur when a stable fixed point of a piecewise-smooth map collides with a switching manifold as parameters are varied. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the extreme complexity possible in the subsequent dynamics. We perturb instances of the border-collision normal form in $n \ge 2$ dimensions for which the $n^{\rm th}$ iterate is a direct product of identical skew tent maps that have chaotic attractors comprised of $k \ge…
In this paper, we study a two-parameter family of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms such that it has a cubic homoclinic tangency unfolding generically which is associated with a dissipative saddle point. Our first theorem presents an open set in the parameter-plane such that, for any parameter value in the open set, there exists a one-parameter subfamily through this value exhibiting cubically related persistent contact-making and contact-breaking quadratic tangencies. Moreover, the second theorem shows that any such two-parameter family satisfies Wang-Young's conditions which guarantee that it …
We analyze the characteristics of the global attractor of a type of dissipative nonautonomous dynamical systems in terms of the Sacker and Sell spectrum of its linear part. The model gives rise to a pattern of nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation which can be understood as a generalization of the classical autonomous one. We pay special attention to the dynamics at the bifurcation point, showing the possibility of occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos in the corresponding attractor and hence of a high degree of unpredictability.
We provide an example for stabilization by noise. Our approach does not rely on monotonicity arguments due to the presence of higher order differential operators or mixing properties of the system as the noise might be highly degenerate. In the examples a scalar additive noise destroys a high-dimensional random attractor of a PDE on an unbounded domain. In the presence of small noise close to bifurcation all trajectories converge to a single stationary solution.
Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations give rise to minimal sets of interesting geometry built of so-called strange non-chaotic attractors. We show that certain families of quasiperiodically driven logistic differential equations undergo a non-smooth bifurcation. By a previous result on the occurrence of non-smooth bifurcations in forced discrete time dynamical systems, this yields that within the class of families of quasiperiodically driven differential equations, non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations occur in a set with non-empty C2-interior.
We prove that spiral sinks (stable foci of vector fields) can be transformed into strange attractors exhibiting sustained, observable chaos if subjected to periodic pulsatile forcing. We show that this phenomenon occurs in the context of periodically-kicked degenerate supercritical Hopf bifurcations. The results and their proofs make use of a new multi-parameter version of the theory of rank one maps developed by Wang and Young.
We study the dynamics of billiard models with a modified collision rule: the outgoing angle from a collision is a uniform contraction, by a factor lambda, of the incident angle. These pinball billiards interpolate between a one-dimensional map when lambda=0 and the classical Hamiltonian case of elastic collisions when lambda=1. For all lambda<1, the dynamics is dissipative, and thus gives rise to attractors, which may be periodic or chaotic. Motivated by recent rigorous results of Markarian, Pujals and Sambarino, we numerically investigate and characterise the bifurcations of the resulting att…
In this paper I will investigate the bifurcation and asymptotic behavior of solutions of the Swift-Hohenberg equation and the generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation with the Dirichlet boundary condition on a one- dimensional domain $(0,L)$. I will also study the bifurcation and stability of patterns in the n-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation with the odd-periodic and periodic boundary conditions. It is shown that each equation bifurcates from the trivial solution to an attractor, when the control parameter crosses the principal eigenvalue of the linearized equation. The local behavior of solu…
Numerical bifurcation analysis, and in particular two-parameter continuation, is used in consort with numerical simulation to reveal complicated dynamics in the Mackey-Glass equation for moderate values of the delay close to the onset of chaos. In particular a cusp bifurcation of periodic orbits and resulting branches of folds of periodic orbits effectively partition the parameter space into regions where different behaviours are seen. The cusp bifurcation leads directly to bistability between periodic orbits, and subsequently to bistability between a periodic orbit and a chaotic attractor. Th…
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
There are few explicit examples in the literature of vector fields exhibiting complex dynamics that may be proved analytically. This paper reports numerical experiments performed for an explicit two-parameter family of vector fields unfolding an attracting heteroclinic network, linking two saddle-foci with $ (\mathbb{SO}(2) \oplus \mathbb{Z}_2)$-symmetry. The vector field is the restriction to $\mathbb{S}^3$ of a polynomial vector field in $\mathbb{R}^4$. We investigate global bifurcations due to symmetry-breaking and we detect strange attractors via a phenomenon called Torus-Breakdown theory.…
We consider the dynamics of a two-dimensional ordinary differential equation exhibiting a Hopf bifurcation subject to additive white noise and identify three dynamical phases: (I) a random attractor with uniform synchronisation of trajectories, (II) a random attractor with non-uniform synchronisation of trajectories and (III) a random attractor without synchronisation of trajectories. The random attractors in phases (I) and (II) are random equilibrium points with negative Lyapunov exponents while in phase (III) there is a so-called random strange attractor with positive Lyapunov exponent. We a…
An attractor of a piecewise-smooth continuous system of differential equations can bifurcate from a stable equilibrium to a more complicated invariant set when it collides with a switching manifold under parameter variation. Here numerical evidence is provided to show that this invariant set can be chaotic. The transition occurs locally (in a neighbourhood of a point) and instantaneously (for a single critical parameter value). This phenomenon is illustrated for the normal form of a boundary equilibrium bifurcation in three dimensions using parameter values adapted from of a piecewise-linear m…
In this paper we study generalized Poincaré-Andronov-Hopf bifurcations of discrete dynamical systems. We prove a general result for attractors in n-dimensional manifolds satisfying some suitable conditions. This result allows us to obtain sharper Hopf bifurcation theorems for fixed points in the general case and other attractors in low dimensional manifolds. Topological techniques based on the notion of concentricity of manifolds play a substantial role in the paper.
The saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle (SNIC) is one of the codimension-one routes to creation or destruction of a periodic orbit in a continuous-time dynamical system. It governs the transition from resting behaviour to periodic spiking in many class I neurons, for example. Here, as a first step towards theory of networks of such units the effect of weak coupling between two systems with a SNIC is analysed. Two crucial parameters of the coupling are identified, which we call δ_1 and δ_2. Global bifurcation diagrams are obtained here for the "mutualistic" case δ_1 δ_2 > 0. Accordin…
In this paper, a two parameters family $F_{β_1,β_2}$ of maps of the plane living two different subspaces invariant is studied. We observe that, our model exhibits two chaotic attractors $A_i$, $i=0,1$, lying in these invariant subspaces and identify the parameters at which $A_i$ has a locally riddled basin of attraction or becomes a chaotic saddle. Then, the occurrence of riddled basin in the global sense is investigated in an open region of $β_1β_2$-plane. We semi-conjugate our system to a random walk model and define a fractal boundary which separates the basins of attraction of the two chao…
In this paper, we study the existence, stability and bifurcation of random complete and periodic solutions for stochastic parabolic equations with multiplicative noise. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of tempered random attractors for the stochastic equations and characterize the structures of the attractors by random complete solutions. We then examine the existence and stability of random complete quasi-solutions and establish the relations of these solutions and the structures of tempered attractors. When the stochastic equations are incorporated with periodic forcing, we obtain…
An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induc…
This paper characterizes the attractor structure of synchronous and asynchronous Boolean networks induced by bi-threshold functions. Bi-threshold functions are generalizations of classical threshold functions and have separate threshold values for the transitions 0 -> 1 (up-threshold) and 1 -> 0 (down-threshold). We show that synchronous bi-threshold systems may, just like standard threshold systems, only have fixed points and 2-cycles as attractors. Asynchronous bi-threshold systems (fixed permutation update sequence), on the other hand, undergo a bifurcation: when the difference Δof the down…
This paper studies noise synchronisation in terms of random pullback attractors and their instabilities. We consider an ensemble of uncoupled lasers, each being a limit-cycle oscillator, which are driven by the same external white Gaussian noise. As the external-noise strength increases, there is an onset of synchronization and then subsequent loss of synchrony. Local analysis of the laser equations shows that synchronization becomes unstable via stochastic bifurcation to a random strange attractor. The locus of this bifurcation is calculated in the three-dimensional parameter space defined by…
We study chaotic dynamics in a system of four differential equations describing the dynamics of five identical globally coupled phase oscillators with biharmonic coupling. We show that this system exhibits strange spiral attractors (Shilnikov attractors) with two zero (indistinguishable from zero in numerics) Lyapunov exponents in a wide region of the parameter space. We explain this phenomenon by means of bifurcation analysis of the three-dimensional Poincaré map for the system under consideration. We show that the chaotic dynamics develop here near a codimension three bifurcation, when a per…
We study bifurcations of periodic orbits in three parameter general unfoldings of certain types quadratic homoclinic tangencies to saddle fixed points. We apply the rescaling technique to first return (Poincaré) maps and show that the rescaled maps can be brought to a map asymptotically close to the 3D Henon map $\bar x=y,\bar y=z,\bar z = M_1 + M_2 y + B x - z^2$ which, as known, exhibits wild hyperbolic Lorenz-like attractors in some open domains of the parameters. Based on this, we prove the existence of infinite cascades of Lorenz-like attractors.
This paper consists of three results on pattern formation of Ginzburg-Landau $m$-armed vortex solutions and spiral waves in circular and spherical geometries. First, we completely describe the global bifurcation diagram of vortex equilibria. Second, we prove persistence of all bifurcation curves under perturbations of parameters, which yields the existence of spiral waves for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Third, we explicitly construct the global attractor of $m$-armed vortex solutions. Our main tool is a new shooting method that allows us to prove hyperbolicity of vortex equilibria in…
We introduce the notion of equilibrium index for statically isolated invariant sets of the system $u_t+A u=f_λ(u)$ on Banach space $X$ (where $A$ is a sectorial operator with compact resolvent) and present a reduction theorem and an index formula for bifurcating invariant sets near equilibrium points. Then we prove a new global static bifurcation theorem where the crossing number $\mathfrak{m}$ may be even. In particular, in case $\mathfrak{m}=2$, we show that the system undergoes either an attractor/repeller bifurcation, or a global static bifurcation. An illustrating example is also given by…
The generalized Floquet exponent and the attractiveness portrait (or A-portrait for short) of the attractor and of the smallest invariant closed set are suggested to be used for the study of dynamical systems. Based on the A-portrait, some simple structures hidden in a complicated attractor may emerge from an attractor with complicated structure. The hidden structure plays important role in the bifurcation phenomena of the invariant sets. The examples of A-portraits for the Van der Pol limit cycle, for Lorenz attractor, for the closed limit orbits of different rotation numbers and complicated …
We show that a strong partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^3$ isotopic to Anosov has a unique quasi-attractor. Moreover, we study the entropy of the diffeomorphism restricted to this quasi-attractor.
A discontinuous change in the size of an attractor is the most easily observed type of global bifurcation. More generally, an explosion is a discontinuous change in the set of recurrent points. An explosion often results from heteroclinic and homoclinic tangency bifurcations. Newhouse and Palis conjectured in 1976 that planar explosions are generically the result of either tangency or saddle node bifurcations. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for one-dimensional maps. Furthermore, we give a full classification for all possible tangency bifurcations and whether they lead to explosions.
For an elastic system that is non-conservative but autonomous, subjected for example to time-independent loading by a steadily flowing fluid (air or water), a dangerous bifurcation, such as a sub-critical bifurcation, or a cyclic fold, will trigger a dynamic jump to one or more remote stable attractors. When there is more than one candidate attractor, the one onto which the structure settles can then be indeterminate, being sensitive to infinitesimally small variations in starting conditions or parameters. In this paper we develop and study an archetypal model to explore the nonlinear dynamic …
This article is meant as a mathematical appendix or comment on [BT]. We first consider the notion of transcritical bifurcations of fixed points of general area-preserving maps, and then adress some questions related to [BT] on bifurcation in Poincaré maps of 2-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. The attractors of a dynamical system govern its typical long-term behaviour. The presence of many attractors is significant as it means the behaviour is heavily dependent on the initial conditions. To understand how large numbers of attractors can coexist, in this thesis we study the occurrence of infinitely many stable single-round periodic solutions associated with homoclinic connections in two-dimensional maps. We show this phenomenon has a relatively high codimension requiring a homoclinic tangency and `global resonance', as has been described previously in the area-preserving setting. How…
