Detecting dynamic objects and predicting static road information such as drivable areas and ground heights are crucial for safe autonomous driving. Previous works studied each perception task separately, and lacked a collective quantitative analysis. In this work, we show that it is possible to perform all perception tasks via a simple and efficient multi-task network. Our proposed network, LidarMTL, takes raw LiDAR point cloud as inputs, and predicts six perception outputs for 3D object detection and road understanding. The network is based on an encoder-decoder architecture with 3D sparse convolution and deconvolution operations. Extensive experiments verify the proposed method with competitive accuracies compared to state-of-the-art object detectors and other task-specific networks. LidarMTL is also leveraged for online localization. Code and pre-trained model have been made available at https://github.com/frankfengdi/LidarMTL.

Road detection or traversability analysis has been a key technique for a mobile robot to traverse complex off-road scenes. The problem has been mainly formulated in early works as a binary classification one, e.g. associating pixels with road or non-road labels. Whereas understanding scenes with fine-grained labels are needed for off-road robots, as scenes are very diverse, and the various mechanical performance of off-road robots may lead to different definitions of safe regions to traverse. How to define and annotate fine-grained labels to achieve meaningful scene understanding for a robot t…

Single-vehicle accidents are the most common type of fatal accidents in Sweden, where a car drives off the road and runs into hazardous roadside objects. Proper installation and maintenance of protective objects, such as crash cushions and guard rails, may reduce the chance and severity of such accidents. Moreover, efficient detection and management of hazardous roadside objects also plays an important role in improving road safety. To better understand the state-of-the-art and system requirements, in this pre-study, we investigate the feasibility, implementation, limitations and scaling up of…

A vehicle driving along the road is surrounded by many objects, but only a small subset of them influence the driver's decisions and actions. Learning to estimate the importance of each object on the driver's real-time decision-making may help better understand human driving behavior and lead to more reliable autonomous driving systems. Solving this problem requires models that understand the interactions between the ego-vehicle and the surrounding objects. However, interactions among other objects in the scene can potentially also be very helpful, e.g., a pedestrian beginning to cross the roa…
This paper addresses the problem of holistic road scene understanding based on the integration of visual and range data. To achieve the grand goal, we propose an approach that jointly tackles object-level image segmentation and semantic region labeling within a conditional random field (CRF) framework. Specifically, we first generate semantic object hypotheses by clustering 3D points, learning their prior appearance models, and using a deep learning method for reasoning their semantic categories. The learned priors, together with spatial and geometric contexts, are incorporated in CRF. With th…

Scene understanding for autonomous vehicles is a challenging computer vision task, with recent advances in convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieving results that notably surpass prior traditional feature driven approaches. However, limited work investigates the application of such methods either within the highly unstructured off-road environment or to RGBD input data. In this work, we take an existing CNN architecture designed to perform semantic segmentation of RGB images of urban road scenes, then adapt and retrain it to perform the same task with multichannel RGBD images obtained unde…

Road markings provide guidance to traffic participants and enforce safe driving behaviour, understanding their semantic meaning is therefore paramount in (automated) driving. However, producing the vast quantities of road marking labels required for training state-of-the-art deep networks is costly, time-consuming, and simply infeasible for every domain and condition. In addition, training data retrieved from virtual worlds often lack the richness and complexity of the real world and consequently cannot be used directly. In this paper, we provide an alternative approach in which new road marki…

Occupancy grid mapping is an important component in road scene understanding for autonomous driving. It encapsulates information of the drivable area, road obstacles and enables safe autonomous driving. Radars are an emerging sensor in autonomous vehicle vision, becoming more widely used due to their long range sensing, low cost, and robustness to severe weather conditions. Despite recent advances in deep learning technology, occupancy grid mapping from radar data is still mostly done using classical filtering approaches. In this work, we propose learning the inverse sensor model used for occup…

Tremendous progress in deep learning over the last years has led towards a future with autonomous vehicles on our roads. As these usually only cover a fraction of all object classes an autonomous driving system will face, such systems struggle with handling the unexpected. In order to safely operate on public roads, the identification of objects from unknown classes remains a crucial task. In this paper, we propose a novel pipeline to detect unknown objects. In literature, Extended Object Tracking (EOT) algorithms developed for autonomous driving predominantly provide obstacles state estimation in cartesian coordinates in the Vehicle Reference Frame. However, in many scenarios, state representation in road-aligned curvilinear coordinates is preferred when implementing autonomous driving subsystems like cruise control, lane-keeping assist, platooning, etc. This paper proposes a Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density~(GM-PHD) filter with an Unscented Kalman Filter~(UKF) estimator that provides obstacle state estimates in curvilinear road co…

We present an approach for reconstructing vehicles from a single (RGB) image, in the context of autonomous driving. Though the problem appears to be ill-posed, we demonstrate that prior knowledge about how 3D shapes of vehicles project to an image can be used to reason about the reverse process, i.e., how shapes (back-)project from 2D to 3D. We encode this knowledge in \emph{shape priors}, which are learnt over a small keypoint-annotated dataset. We then formulate a shape-aware adjustment problem that uses the learnt shape priors to recover the 3D pose and shape of a query object from an image…
Localization and recognition of less-occurring road objects have been a challenge in autonomous driving applications due to the scarcity of data samples. Few-Shot Object Detection techniques extend the knowledge from existing base object classes to learn novel road objects given few training examples. Popular techniques in FSOD adopt either meta or metric learning techniques which are prone to class confusion and base class forgetting. In this work, we introduce a novel Meta Guided Metric Learner (MGML) to overcome class confusion in FSOD. We re-weight the features of the novel classes higher …

We evaluate both metric-learning and meta-learning based FSOD methods, in two experimental settings: (i) representative (same-domain) splits from IDD, that evaluates the ability of a model to learn in…

Understanding human driving behavior is crucial to develop autonomous vehicles' algorithms. However, most low level automation, such as the one in advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), is based on objective safety measures, which are not always aligned with what the drivers perceive as safe and their correspondent driving behavior. Finding the bridge between the subjective perception and objective safety measures has been analyzed in this paper focusing specifically on lane-change scenarios. Results showed statistically significant differences between what is perceived as safe by drivers…

However, are there more straightforward modifications that could deliver higher accuracy? Yes. We show that increasing input image resolution (i.e. upsampling) offers up to 12 percentage-points higher accuracy compared to an of…
