During the last years, many advances have been made in tasks like3D model retrieval, 3D model classification, and 3D model segmentation. The typical 3D representations such as point clouds, voxels, and poly-gon meshes are mostly suitable for rendering purposes, while their use forcognitive processes (retrieval, classification, segmentation) is limited dueto their high redundancy and complexity. We propose a deep learningarchitecture to handle 3D models as an input. We combine this architec-ture with other standard architectures like Convolutional Neural Networksand autoencoders for computing 3D model embeddings. Our goal is torepresent a 3D model as a vector with enough information to substitutethe 3D model for high-level tasks. Since this vector is a learned repre-sentation which tries to capture the relevant information of a 3D model,we show that the embedding representation conveys semantic informationthat helps to deal with the similarity assessment of 3D objects. Our ex-periments show the benefit of computing the embeddings of a 3D modeldata set and use them for effective 3D Model Retrieval.

Vision Transformers (ViTs) have recently dominated a range of computer vision tasks, yet it suffers from low training data efficiency and inferior local semantic representation capability without appropriate inductive bias. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) inherently capture regional-aware semantics, inspiring researchers to introduce CNNs back into the architecture of the ViTs to provide desirable inductive bias for ViTs. However, is the locality achieved by the micro-level CNNs embedded in ViTs good enough? In this paper, we investigate the problem by profoundly exploring how the macro a…
This paper proposes a new deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architecture that learns pixel embeddings, such that pairwise distances between the embeddings can be used to infer whether or not the pixels lie on the same region. That is, for any two pixels on the same object, the embeddings are trained to be similar; for any pair that straddles an object boundary, the embeddings are trained to be dissimilar. Experimental results show that when this embedding network is used in conjunction with a DCNN trained on semantic segmentation, there is a systematic improvement in per-pixel classific…

Automatic building extraction from optical imagery remains a challenge due to, for example, the complexity of building shapes. Semantic segmentation is an efficient approach for this task. The latest development in deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) has made accurate pixel-level classification tasks possible. Yet one central issue remains: the precise delineation of boundaries. Deep architectures generally fail to produce fine-grained segmentation with accurate boundaries due to their progressive down-sampling. Hence, we introduce a generic framework to overcome the issue, integrating …
Deep learning architectures such as convolutional neural networks are the standard in computer vision for image processing tasks. Their accuracy however often comes at the cost of long and computationally expensive training, the need for large annotated datasets, and extensive hyper-parameter searches. On the other hand, a different method known as convolutional extreme learning machine has shown the potential to perform equally with a dramatic decrease in training time. Space imagery, especially about small bodies, could be well suited for this method. In this work, convolutional extreme lear…

Clustering artworks is difficult for several reasons. On the one hand, recognizing meaningful patterns in accordance with domain knowledge and visual perception is extremely difficult. On the other hand, applying traditional clustering and feature reduction techniques to the highly dimensional pixel space can be ineffective. To address these issues, we propose to use a deep convolutional embedding model for digitized painting clustering, in which the task of mapping the raw input data to an abstract, latent space is jointly optimized with the task of finding a set of cluster centroids in this …

This paper introduces a novel approach for 3D semantic instance segmentation on point clouds. A 3D convolutional neural network called submanifold sparse convolutional network is used to generate semantic predictions and instance embeddings simultaneously. To obtain discriminative embeddings for each 3D instance, a structure-aware loss function is proposed which considers both the structure information and the embedding information. To get more consistent embeddings for each 3D instance, attention-based k nearest neighbour (KNN) is proposed to assign different weights for different neighbours.…

Recently, more and more attention is drawn to the field of medical image synthesis across modalities. Among them, the synthesis of computed tomography (CT) image from T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) image is of great importance, although the mapping between them is highly complex due to large gaps of appearances of the two modalities. In this work, we aim to tackle this MR-to-CT synthesis by a novel deep embedding convolutional neural network (DECNN). Specifically, we generate the feature maps from MR images, and then transform these feature maps forward through convolutional layers in the…

We explain our framework that expands traditional learning with set-based supervision together with the strategies used to maintain set characteristics. We, then, briefly review the related set-based loss functions, and subsequently propose a novel Max-Margin Loss which maximizes maximum possible inter-class margin with assistance of Support Vector Machines (SVMs). We present a deep convolutional decoder architecture that can generate volumetric 3D outputs in a compute- and memory-efficient manner by using an octree representation. The network learns to predict both the structure of the octree, and the occupancy values of individual cells. This makes it a particularly valuable technique for generating 3D shapes. In contrast to standard decoders acting on regular voxel grids, the architecture does not have cubic complexity. This allows representing much higher resolution outputs with a limited memory budget. We demonstrate this in several application doma…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) has been widely applied in the realm of computer vision. However, given the fact that CNN models are translation invariant, they are not aware of the coordinate information of each pixel. Thus the generalization ability of CNN will be limited since the coordinate information is crucial for a model to learn affine transformations which directly operate on the coordinate of each pixel. In this project, we proposed a simple approach to incorporate the coordinate information to the CNN model through coordinate embedding. Our approach does not change the downstre…

Their implausible biological dynamics relies on changing a weight in a non-local manner, as the number of routes between an output unit and a weight is typically large, using the backpropagation technique. Here, a 3-layer tree architecture inspired by experimental-based dendritic tree adaptations is developed and applied to the offline and online learning of the CIFAR-10 database. In this paper we address three different computer vision tasks using a single basic architecture: depth prediction, surface normal estimation, and semantic labeling. We use a multiscale convolutional network that is able to adapt easily to each task using only small modifications, regressing from the input image to the output map directly. Our method progressively refines predictions using a sequence of scales, and captures many image details without any superpixels or low-level segmentation. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks for all three tasks.

To that end, we introduce a simplified training objective for learning multimodal embeddings using the skip-gram architecture by introducing convolution…

Recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence have been made possible by deep neural networks. In applications where data are scarce, transfer learning and data augmentation techniques are commonly used to improve the generalization of deep learning models. However, fine-tuning a transfer model with data augmentation in the raw input space has a high computational cost to run the full network for every augmented input. This is particularly critical when large models are implemented on embedded devices with limited computational and energy resources. In this work, we propose a method …

Deep convolutional neural networks are generally regarded as robust function approximators. So far, this intuition is based on perturbations to external stimuli such as the images to be classified. Here we explore the robustness of convolutional neural networks to perturbations to the internal weights and architecture of the network itself. We show that convolutional networks are surprisingly robust to a number of internal perturbations in the higher convolutional layers but the bottom convolutional layers are much more fragile. For instance, Alexnet shows less than a 30% decrease in classific…

However, such measurement holds unstable representativity due to inadequate generalized learning on local invariant and noisy features, while intu…

In recent times, deep learning-based steganalysis classifiers became popular due to their state-of-the-art performance. Most deep steganalysis classifiers usually extract noise residuals using high-pass filters as preprocessing steps and feed them to their deep model for classification. It is observed that recent steganographic embedding does not always restrict their embedding in the high-frequency zone; instead, they distribute it as per embedding policy. Therefore, besides noise residual, learning the embedding zone is another challenging task. In this work, unlike the conventional approach…

We characterize convolutional neural networks with respect to the relative amount of features per layer. Using a skew normal distribution as a parametrized framework, we investigate the common assumption of monotonously increasing feature-counts with higher layers of architecture designs. Our evaluation on models with VGG-type layers on the MNIST, Fashion-MNIST and CIFAR-10 image classification benchmarks provides evidence that motivates rethinking of our common assumption: architectures that favor larger early layers seem to yield better accuracy.
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are commonly assumed to be invariant to small image transformations: either because of the convolutional architecture or because they were trained using data augmentation. Recently, several authors have shown that this is not the case: small translations or rescalings of the input image can drastically change the network's prediction. In this paper, we quantify this phenomena and ask why neither the convolutional architecture nor data augmentation are sufficient to achieve the desired invariance. Specifically, we show that the convolutional architecture doe…
