Information on the structure around active galactic nuclei (AGN) has long been derived from measuring lags in their varying light output at different wavelengths. In principle, infrared data would reach to larger radii, potentially even probing reprocessed radiation in any surrounding dusty torus. In practice, this has proved challenging because high quality data are required to detect such variability, and the observations must stretch over a long period to probe the likely month-scale lags in variability. In addition, large numbers of sources would need to be observed to start searching for any patterns in such lags. Here, we show that the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey, built up from repeated observations over almost a decade, provides an ideal data set for such a study. For 94 sources identified as strongly-varying AGN within its square-degree field, we find that the K-band light curves systematically lag the J-band light curves by an average of around a month. The lags become smaller at higher redshift, consistent with the band shift to optical rest-frame emission. The less luminous AGN also display shorter lags, as would be expected if their physical size scales with luminosity.
There is strong observational evidence indicating a time lag of order of some 100 Myr between the onset of starburst and AGN activity in galaxies. Dynamical time lags have been invoked to explain this. We extend this approach by introducing a viscous time lag the gas additionally needs to flow through the AGN's accretion disc before it reaches the central black hole. Our calculations reproduce the observed time lags and are in accordance with the observed correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion.
The optical light curve of the quasar PG 1302-102 at $z = 0.278$ shows a strong, smooth 5.2 yr periodic signal, detectable over a period of $\sim 20$ yr. Although the interpretation of this phenomenon is still uncertain, the most plausible mechanisms involve a binary system of two supermassive black holes with a subparsec separation. At this close separation, the nuclear black holes in PG 1302-102 will likely merge within $\sim 10^{5}$ yr due to gravitational wave emission alone. Here we report the rest-frame near-infrared time lags for PG 1302-102. Compiling data from {\it WISE} and {\it Akar…
Inconsistent conclusions are obtained from recent active galactic nuclei (AGNs) accretion disk inter-band time-lag measurements. While some works show that the measured time lags are significantly larger (by a factor of $\sim 3$) than the theoretical predictions of the Shakura \& Sunyaev disk (SSD) model, others find that the time-lag measurements are consistent with (or only slightly larger than) that of the SSD model. These conflicting observational results might be symptoms of our poor understanding of AGN accretion physics. Here we show that sources with larger-than-expected time lags tend…
The time lag between optical and near-infrared continuum emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN) shows a tight correlation with luminosity and has been proposed as a standardisable candle for cosmology. In this paper, we explore the use of these AGN hot-dust time lags for cosmological model fitting under the constraints of the new VISTA Extragalactic Infrared Legacy Survey VEILS. This new survey will target a 9 deg^2 field observed in J- and Ks-band with a 14-day cadence and will run for three years. The same area will be covered simultaneously in the optical griz bands by the Dark Energy Sur…
We carried out spectroscopic monitoring of 21 low-redshift Seyfert 1 galaxies using the Kast double spectrograph on the 3-m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory from April 2016 to May 2017. Targeting active galactic nuclei (AGN) with luminosities of λLλ (5100 Å) = 10^44 erg/s and predicted Hβ lags of 20-30 days or black hole masses of 10^7-10^8.5 Msun, our campaign probes luminosity-dependent trends in broad-line region (BLR) structure and dynamics as well as to improve calibrations for single-epoch estimates of quasar black hole masses. Here we present the first results from the campaign, incl…
We present results of a study of the correlation between the infrared (JHKL) and optical(B) fluxes of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 for the years 2010 - 2015 using our own data (partially published) in combination with published data of Roberts and Rumstey (2012), Guo et al. (2014) and Schnulle et al. (2013, 2015).We find similar lags for each of the HKL passbands relative to the optical of 37 +-3 days. The lags are the same to within the accuracy of measurement. We do not confirm a significant decrease in the lag for HKL in 2013-2014 previously reported by Schnulle et al. (2015),…
This paper presents scale invariant/self-similar galactic magnetic dynamo models based on the classic equations, and compares them qualitatively to recently observed magnetic fields in edge-on spiral galaxies. We classify the axially symmetric dynamo magnetic field by its separate sources, advected flux and sub scale turbulence. We neglect the diffusion term under plausible physical conditions. There is a time dependence determined by globally conserved quantities. We show that magnetic scale heights increase with radius and wind velocity. We suggest that AGN outflow is an important element of…
As part of the OzDES spectroscopic survey we are carrying out a large scale reverberation mapping study of $\sim$500 quasars over five years in the 30 deg$^2$ area of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) supernova fields. These quasars have redshifts ranging up to 4 and have apparent AB magnitudes between $16.8<r<22.5$ mag. The aim of the survey is to measure time lags between fluctuations in the quasar continuum and broad emission line fluxes of individual objects in order to measure black hole masses for a broad range of AGN and constrain the radius-luminosity ($R-L$) relationship. Here we investiga…
According to the standard paradigm, the strong and compact luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is due to multi-temperature black body emission originating from an accretion disk formed around a supermassive black hole. This central engine is thought to be surrounded by a dusty region along the equatorial plane and by ionized winds along the poles. The innermost regions cannot yet be resolved neither in the optical nor in the infrared and it is fair to say that we still lack a satisfactory understanding of the physical processes, geometry and composition of the central (sub-parsec) compo…
We have modeled the velocity-resolved reverberation response of the H\b{eta} broad emission line in nine Seyfert 1 galaxies from the Lick Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) Monitioring Project 2016 sample, drawing inferences on the geometry and structure of the low-ionization broad-line region (BLR) and the mass of the central supermassive black hole. Overall, we find that the H\b{eta} BLR is generally a thick disk viewed at low to moderate inclination angles. We combine our sample with prior studies and investigate line-profile shape dependence, such as log10(FWHM/σ), on BLR structure and kinemati…
The scaling relations between the black hole (BH) mass and soft lag properties for both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and BH X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) suggest the same underlying physical mechanism at work in accreting BH systems spanning a broad range of mass. However, the low-mass end of AGNs has never been explored in detail. In this work, we extend the existing scaling relations to lower-mass AGNs, which serve as anchors between the normal-mass AGNs and BHXRBs. For this purpose, we construct a sample of low-mass AGNs ($M_{\rm BH}<3\times 10^{6} M_{\rm \odot}$) from the XMM-Newton archive and…
We perform a systematic survey of active galactic nucleus (AGN) continuum lags using $\sim$3 day cadence $gri$-band light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility. We select a sample of 94 type 1 AGN at $z<0.8$ with significant and consistent inter-band lags based on the interpolated cross-correlation function method and the Bayesian method JAVELIN. Within the framework of the lamp-post reprocessing model, our findings are: 1) The continuum emission (CE) sizes inferred from the data are larger than the disk sizes predicted by the standard thin disk model; 2) For a subset of the sample, the CE…
We present the accretion disk size estimates for a sample of 19 active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the optical $g$, $r$, and $i$ band light curves obtained from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. All the AGN have reliable supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass estimates based on previous reverberation mapping measurements. The multi-band light curves are cross-correlated, and the reverberation lag is estimated using the Interpolated Cross-Correlation Function (ICCF) method and the Bayesian method using the {\sc javelin} code. As expected from the disk reprocessing arguments, the $g-r$ ba…
We present a revised analysis of the photometric reverberation mapping campaign of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 0558-504 carried out with the Swift Observatory during 2008--2010. Previously, Gliozzi et al.\ found using the Discrete Correlation Function (DCF) method that the short-wavelength continuum variations lagged behind variations at longer wavelengths, the opposite of the trend expected for thermal reprocessing of X-rays by the accretion disc, and they interpreted their results as evidence against the reprocessing model. We carried out new DCF measurements that demonstrate that t…
We present results from a fifteen-month campaign of high-cadence (~ 3 days) mid-infrared Spitzer and optical (B and V ) monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 6418, with the objective of determining the characteristic size of the dusty torus in this active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find that the 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m flux variations lag behind those of the optical continuum by $37.2^{+2.4}_{-2.2}$ days and $47.1^{+3.1}_{-3.1}$ days, respectively. We report a cross-correlation time lag between the 4.5 $μ$m and 3.6 $μ$m flux of $13.9^{+0.5}_{-0.1}$ days. The lags indicate that the dust emitting…
NGC 2617 has attracted a lot of attention after the detection of the changes in spectral type, and its geometry and kinematics of broad-line region (BLR) are still ambiguous. In this paper, we present the high cadence ($\sim$ 2 days) reverberation mapping campaign of NGC 2617 from 2019 October to 2020 May undertaken at Lijiang 2.4 m telescope. For the first time, the velocity-resolved reverberation signature of the object was successfully detected. Both H$α$ and H$β$ show an asymmetrical profile with a peak in the velocity-resolved time lags. For each of both lines, the lag of the line core is…
We propose a solution to the problem of accretion disc sizes in active galactic nuclei being larger when measured by reverberation mapping than predicted by theory. Considering blackbody reprocessing on a disc with thickness profile $H(r)$, our solution invokes a steep rim or rippled structures irradiated by the central lamp-post. We model the continuum lags and the faint and bright disc spectral energy distribution (SED) in the best-studied case NGC 5548 (black hole mass $M = 7\times10^{7} M_\odot$, disc inclination $i=45^\circ$). With the lamp-post off, the observed disc SED requires a low a…

The nearby dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 4395 contains a broad-lined active galactic nucleus (AGN) of exceptionally low luminosity powered by accretion onto a central black hole of very low mass ($\sim10^4-10^5$ M$_\odot$). In order to constrain the size of the optical continuum emission region through reverberation mapping, we carried out high-cadence photometric monitoring of NGC 4395 in the $griz$ filter bands on two consecutive nights in 2022 April using the four-channel MuSCAT3 camera on the Faulkes Telescope North at Haleakalā Observatory. Correlated variability across the $griz$ bands is clea…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 was monitored spectroscopically with the Hubble Space Telescope as part of a reverberation mapping campaign that also included Swift, Kepler and ground-based photometric monitoring. During 2016 July 12 - August 6, we obtained 26 spectra across a nearly continuous wavelength range of ~1150 - 10,000A. These were combined with Swift data to produce a UV/optical "lag spectrum", which shows the interband lag relative to the Swift UVW2 band as a function of wavelength. The broad shape of the lag spectrum appears to follow the $τ\propto λ^{4/3}$ relation seen previously …
We present the results of an intensive six-month optical continuum reverberation mapping campaign of the Seyfert 1 galaxy PG 2130+099 at redshift z=0.063. The ground-based photometric monitoring was conducted on a daily basis with the robotic 46cm telescope of the Wise observatory located in Israel. Specially designed narrowband filters were used to observe the central engine of the active galactic nucleus (AGN), avoiding line contamination from the broad-line region (BLR). We aim to measure inter-band continuum time lags across the optical range and determine the size-wavelength relation for …
Reverberation mapping measurements have been used to constrain the relationship between the size of the broad-line region and luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN). This $R-L$ relation is used to estimate single-epoch virial black hole masses, and has been proposed for use to standardise AGN to determine cosmological distances. We present reverberation measurements made with H$β$ from the six-year Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES) Reverberation Mapping Program. We successfully recover reverberation lags for eight AGN at $0.12<z< 0.71$, probing higher redshifts than the bulk of H$β$ me…
We present the long term, frequency-dependent, X-ray time lags of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051. We used Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer light curves in the 2-4, 4-7 and 7-10 keV bands and we measured the time-lags at $10^{-7}-10^{-6}$ Hz. This is the lowest frequency range that AGN time-lags have ever been measured. The variations in the higher energy bands are delayed with respect to the variations we observe at 2-4 keV, in agreement with the time-lags at high frequencies. When we combine our results with those from the model fitting of the time lags at higher frequencies we find that that the X-r…

Two years' worth of u-, g-, r-, i-, and z-band optical light curves were obtained for the massive type 1 quasar PG 2308+098 at z=0.433 using the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt telescope/Kiso Wide Field Camera, and inter-band time lags of the light curves were measured. Wavelength-dependent continuum reverberation lag signals of several tens of days relative to the u-band were detected at g-, r-, i-, and z-bands, where the longer wavelength bands showed larger lags. From the wavelength-dependent lags, and assuming the standard disk temperature radial profile $T \propto R_{\rm disk}^{-3/4}$ and an X-ray/fa…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS infrared 5-35 micron low-resolution spectroscopic energy diagnostics of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z > 0.15, classified optically as non-Seyferts. Based on the equivalent widths of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission and the optical depths of silicate dust absorption features, we searched for signatures of intrinsically luminous, but optically elusive, buried AGNs in these optically non-Seyfert ULIRGs. We then combined the results with those of non-Seyfert ULIRGs at z < 0.15 and non-Seyfert galaxies with infrared luminosities L(IR) < …
The time delay between flux variations in different wavelength bands can be used to probe the inner regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Here, we present the first measurements of the time delay between optical and near-infrared (NIR) flux variations in H0507+164, a nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy at z = 0.018. The observations in the optical V -band and NIR J, H and Ks bands carried over 35 epochs during the period October 2016 to April 2017 were used to estimate the inner radius of the dusty torus. From a careful reduction and analysis of the data using cross-correlation techniques, we found d…
Motivated by upcoming photometric and spectroscopic surveys (Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Manuakea Spectroscopic Explorer), we design the statistical proxies to measure the cadence effects on active galactic nuclei (AGN) variability-observables (time-lags, periodicity, and structure-function (SF)). We constructed a multiple-regression model to statistically identify the cadence-formal error pattern knowing AGN time-lags and periodicity from different surveys. We defined the simple metric for the SF's properties, accounting for the 'observed' SF's deviation …
We investigate what powers hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs; LIR(8-1000um)>10^13 Lsun) at z~1-2, by examining the behaviour of the infrared AGN luminosity function in relation to the infrared galaxy luminosity function. The former corresponds to emission from AGN-heated dust only, whereas the latter includes emission from dust heated by stars and AGN. Our results show that the two luminosity functions are substantially different below 10^13 Lsun but converge in the HyLIRG regime. We find that the fraction of AGN dominated sources increases with total infrared luminosity and at LIR >10^…
We investigate infrared colours and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 338 X-ray selected AGN from Swift-BAT 105-month survey catalogue that have AKARI detection, in order to find a new selection criteria for Compton-thick AGN. By combining data from Galaxy Evolution Explore (GALEX), Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14 (DR14), Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), AKARI and Herschel for the first time we perform ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared (FIR) SED fitting 158 Swift BAT AGN by CIGALE and constrain the AGN model parameters of obscu…
In this third paper of the series reporting on the reverberation mapping (RM) campaign of active galactic nuclei with asymmetric H$β$ emission-line profiles, we present results for 15 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars using spectra obtained between the end of 2016 to May 2021. This campaign combines long time spans with relatively high cadence. For 8 objects, both the time lags obtained from the entire light curves and the measurements from individual observing seasons are provided. Reverberation mapping of 9 of our targets has been attempted for the first time, while the results for 6 others can be …
A direct consequence of hierarchical galaxy formation is the existence of dual supermassive black holes (SMBHs), which may be preferentially triggered as active galactic nuclei (AGN) during galaxy mergers. Despite decades of searching, however, dual AGNs are extremely rare, and most have been discovered serendipitously. Using the all-sky WISE survey, we identified a population of over 100 morphologically identified interacting galaxies or mergers that display red mid-infrared colors often associated in extragalactic sources with powerful AGNs. The vast majority of these advanced mergers are op…
We present the results of a stacking analysis performed on Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph high-resolution mid-infrared spectra of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). By binning on mid-infrared active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction and stacking spectra, we detect bright emission lines [Ne II] and [Ne III], which trace star formation, and fainter emission lines [Ne V] and [O IV], which trace AGN activity, throughout the sample. We find the [Ne II] luminosity is fairly constant across all AGN fraction bins, while the [O IV] and [Ne V] luminos…
We investigate what shapes the infrared luminosity function of local galaxies by comparing it to the local infrared AGN luminosity function. The former corresponds to emission from dust heated by stars and AGN, whereas the latter includes emission from AGN-heated dust only. Our results show that infrared emission from AGN starts mixing into the galaxy luminosity function in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) regime and becomes significant in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) regime, with the luminosity above which local ULIRGs become AGN-dominated being in the log(LIR/Lsun)~12.2-12.7 …
We conduct for the first time a theoretical investigation of the mid-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by dust heated by an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and an extreme starburst. These models employ an integrated modeling approach using photoionization and stellar population synthesis models in which both the line and emergent continuum is predicted from gas exposed to the ionizing radiation from a young starburst and an AGN. In this work, we focus on the infrared colors from the {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}, predicting the dependence of the colors on the input…
Far-infrared (far-IR)/sub-mm emission linked to AGN-heated dust has been a topic of contention for many years. Results have been diverse and various views have been presented. The empirical AGN SED derived by Symeonidis et al. (2016, hereafter S16) has more far-IR/sub-mm emission than other SEDs in the literature, and thus it is contested by other works which argue that its luminosity in that part of the spectrum is overestimated. Here, I investigate this topic and the concerns raised over the S16 AGN SED. I also examine the differences between the S16 AGN SED and other commonly-used empirical…
Optical and near-infrared photometry, optical spectroscopy, and soft X-ray and UV monitoring of the changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC 2617 show that it continues to have the appearance of a type-1 Seyfert galaxy. An optical light curve for 2010$-$2017 indicates that the change of type probably occurred between 2010 October and 2012 February and was not related to the brightening in 2013. In 2016 and 2017 NGC 2617 brightened again to a level of activity close to that in 2013 April. However, in 2017 from the end of the March to end of July 2017 it was in very low level and starting to ch…
We investigate the infrared contribution from supermassive black hole activity versus host galaxy emission in the mid to far-infrared (IR) spectrum for a large sample of X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) residing in dusty, star-forming host galaxies. We select 703 AGN with L_X = 10^42-46 ergs/s at 0.1 < z < 5 from the Chandra XBootes X-ray Survey with rich multi-band observations in the optical to far-IR. This is the largest sample to date of X-ray AGN with mid and far-IR detections that uses spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition to determine intrinsic AGN and host galaxy in…
We present infrared K'- (2.1 micron) and L'-band (3.8 micron) high-spatial-resolution (<0.3") imaging observations of 17 nearby (z < 0.17) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) assisted with the adaptive optics of the Subaru Telescope. We search for compact red K'-L' color emission as the indicator of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs) due to AGN-heated hot dust emission. Two luminous dual AGN candidates are revealed. Combining these results with those of our previous study, we can state that the detected fraction of luminous dual AGNs in nearby ULIRGs is much less than unity (<20%), ev…
We investigated the connection between the mid-infrared (MIR) and optical spectral characteristics in a sample of 82 Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs), observed with Infrared Spectrometer on Spitzer (IRS) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR12). We found several interesting correlations between optical and MIR spectral properties: i) as starburst significators in MIR increase, the EWs of optical lines H$β$NLR and FeII, increase as well; ii) as MIR spectral index increases, EW([OIII]) decreases, while fractional contribution of AGN (RAGN) is not connected with EW([OIII]); iii) The log([OII…
We present a statistical analysis of the mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of 248 luminous infrared (IR) galaxies (LIRGs) which comprise the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) observed with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on-board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The GOALS sample enables a direct measurement of the relative contributions of star-formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) to the total IR emission from a large sample of local LIRGs. The AGN contribution to the MIR emission (f-AGN) is estimated by employing several diagnostics based on the properties of the [NeV], [OIV] and [Ne…
Measuring the star-forming properties of AGN hosts is key to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, this topic remains debated, partly due to the difficulties in separating the infrared (i.e. 1--1000 $μ$m) emission into AGN and star-forming components. Taking advantage of archival far-infrared data from Herschel, we present a new set of AGN and galaxy infrared templates, and introduce the spectral energy distribution fitting code IRAGNSEP. Both can be used to measure infrared host galaxy properties, free of AGN contamination. To build these, we used a sample of 100 local…
The infrared Astronomical Satellite AKARI conducted deep ($\sim$ 0.4 deg$^2$) and wide ($\sim 5.4$ deg$^2$) surveys around the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) with its InfraRed Camera (IRC) with nine filters continuously covering the 2-25 $μ$m range. These photometric bands include three filters that fill the `Spitzer gap' between the wavelength coverages of IRAC and MIPS. This unique feature has enabled us to make sensitive mid-infrared detection of AGN candidates at z$\sim$ 1-2, based on the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting including hot dust emission in the AGN torus. This enables us to…
