ProtoDUNE-DP is a 6x6x6 m3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the Dual Phase concept for the DUNE Far Detector. The Photon Detection System (PDS) is based on 36 8-inch photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) and allows triggering on the scintillation light signals produced by cosmic rays and other charged particles traversing the detector. The acquisition and calibration software specifically developed for the ProtoDUNE-DP PDS is described in this paper. This software controls the high-voltage power supplies, the calibration system, and the PDS DAQ. It has been developed with Qt Creator, and features different operation modes, and a graphical user interface. This software has already been validated and used during the ProtoDUNE-DP operation.
A LED-based fiber calibration system for the ProtoDUNE-Dual Phase (DP) photon detection system (PDS) has been designed and validated. ProtoDUNE-DP is a 6x6x6 m3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber currently being installed at the Neutrino Platform at CERN. The PDS is based on 36 8-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and will allow triggering on cosmic rays. The system serves as prototype for the PDS of the final DUNE DP far detector in which the PDS also has the function to allow the 3D event reconstruction on non-beam physics. For this purpose an equalized PMT response is desirable to allow us…
The movable temperature profiler is a 7 m vertical array of 24 sensors that measures cryogenic temperatures with a precision of a few mK. This precision is necessary to monitor the efficiency of re-circulation and purification of liquid-argon inside large liquid-argon based neutrino detectors. Liquid argon temperature impacts electron (signal) drift velocity, flow, purity distribution and thus the overall energy calibration. The temperature profiler is motorized and moves vertically, while in the detector, and cross-calibrates neighboring sensors. The temperature offsets between each sensor ca…
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a 40-kton underground liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LAr TPC) detector, for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies and for neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. Photon detector systems embedded within the LAr TPC add precise timing capabilities for non-beam events. The ProtoDUNE dual phase detector will consist of a 6x6x6 m3 liquid argon time-projection chamber placed at CERN and the light readout will be formed by 8-inch cryogenic photomultipliers from Hamamatsu. The characterization of the 36 photomultipliers, the base…
Large liquid argon Time Projection Chambers have been adopted for the DUNE experiment's far detector, which will be composed of four 17 kton detectors situated 1.5 km underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. This represents a large increase in scale compared to existing experiments. Both single- and dual-phase technologies will be validated at CERN, in cryostats capable of accommodating full-size detector modules, and exposed to low-energy charged particle beams. This programme, called ProtoDUNE, also allows for extensive tests of data acquisition strategies. The Front-End LIn…
Calibration is one area in measurement where our country is still in the process of improvement. The absence of confirmed approaches and actions for identifying the features of calibration baths by numerous laboratories disallowed them to assess more the finest measurement ability and develop their accurateness. In recent advances in technology, there is now a way of providing the best measurement capability in temperature calibration by providing validated methods in characterizing calibration baths that contributes to the uncertainty of measurement of the calibrated thermometer and is theref…
A test-bench has been set up at the INFN Sezione di Bologna to optimise key elements of the KM3NeT data acquisition system. A complete framework has been built to simulate a full detection unit and test the optical network, time synchronisation, and on-shore computing resources. A fundamental tool in the test-setup is a customized electronic board: "the OctoPAES". Based on an Altera MAX10 CPLD, it is designed to emulate in a realistic way the optical and acoustic signals recorded by the underwater detectors. They allow to test in extreme conditions the acquisition system and validate its perfo…
An AC susceptometer operating in the range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz and at room temperature is designed, built, calibrated and used to characterize the magnetic behaviour of coated magnetic nanoparticles. Other weakly magnetic materials (in amounts of some millilitres) can be analyzed as well. The setup makes use of a DAQ-based acquisition system in order to determine the amplitude and the phase of the sample magnetization as a function of the frequency of the driving magnetic field, which is powered by a digital waveform generator. A specific acquisition strategy makes the response directly propor…

The ATLAS experiment has successfully recorded over 300 nb^-1 of pp collisions at 7 TeV provided by the Large Hadron Collider, with an efficiency of 94%. We describe the data acquisition, trigger, reconstruction, calibration, monitoring, and luminosity measurement infrastructure that have made this possible.
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Far Detector (FD) will be formed by four 10-kton Liquid Argon (LAr) Time Projection Chambers (TPC) using both single and dual-phase technology. The dual-phase technology foreseen the charge amplification in the gas phase before the signal collection and is following a staged approach to demonstrate its feasibility at the DUNE FD scale. In 2017, a 4-ton demonstrator of 3x1x1 m$^3$ volume was exposed to cosmic muons and demonstrated expected performance in terms of charge extraction and light collection. A bigger prototype (ProtoDUNE-DP), with an a…
In March of 2018, after the completion of the Physics Run 2, an upgrade has been installed at an innovative detector system Horizon-T, with the upgraded version now called Horizon-10T. It was constructed to study Extensive Air Showers (EAS) in the energy range above 10^16 eV coming from a wide range of zenith angles (0 - 85 degrees). The system is located at Tien Shan high-altitude Science Station of Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences at approximately 3340 meters above the sea level. After this upgrade, the detector consists of ten charged particle detection points s…
In this work, a new type of high through-put Czerny-Turner spectrometer has been developed which allows to acquire multiple channels simultaneously with a repetition time on the order of \SI{10}{\us} at different wavelengths. The spectrometer has been coupled to the edge charge exchange recombination system at ASDEX Upgrade which has been recently refurbished with new lines of sight. Construction features, calibration methods, and initial measurements obtained with the new setup will be presented.
In Extensive Air Shower (EAS) experiments, the primary direction is reconstructed by the space-time pattern of secondary particles. Thus the equalization of the transit time of signals coming from different parts of the detector is crucial in order to get the best angular resolution and pointing accuracy allowed by the detector. In this paper an off-line calibration method is proposed and studied by means of proper simulations. It allows to calibrate the array repeatedly just using the collected data without disturbing the standard acquisition. The calibration method is based on the definition…
Current methods for detector gain calibration require acquisition of tens of special calibration images. Here we propose a method that obtains the gain from the actual image for which the photon count is desired by quantifying out-of-band information. We show on simulation and experimental data that our much simpler procedure, which can be retroactively applied to any image, is comparable in precision to traditional gain calibration procedures.
In the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron a high-resolution coordinate detector for high-energy particles is operated. It consists of scintillating fibres with diameters of < 1mm and is read out by > 4000 multi-anode photomultiplier channels. It is one of the most modern focal-plane detectors for magnetic spectrometers world-wide. To correct variations in the detection efficiency, caused by the different gains and the different optical transmittances, a fully automated off-line calibration procedure has been developed. The process includes the positioning of a radioisotope source alongsi…

High energy cosmic rays, with energies thousands of times higher than those encountered in particle accelerators, offer scientists the means of investigating the elementary properties of matter. In order to detect high energy cosmic rays, new detection hardware and experimental methods are being developed. In this work, we describe the network of HELYCON (HEllenic LYceum Cosmic Observatories Network) autonomous stations for the detection and directional reconstruction of Extended Atmospheric Showers (EAS) particle-fronts. HELYCON stations are hybrid stations consisting of three large plastic s…
The MAJORANA Collaboration is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the nucleus $^{76}$Ge. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is an array of germanium detectors deployed with the aim of implementing background reduction techniques suitable for a 1-tonne $^{76}$Ge-based search. The ultra low-background conditions require regular calibrations to verify proper function of the detectors. Radioactive line sources can be deployed around the cryostats containing the detectors for regular energy calibrations. When measuring in low-background mode, these line sources have to be stored outside the …
