Effective theory framework based on symmetry has recently gained widespread interest in the field of cosmology. In this paper, we apply the same idea on the genesis of the primordial magnetic field and its evolution throughout the cosmological universe. Given the broken time-diffeomorphism symmetry by the cosmological background, we considered the most general Lagrangian of electromagnetic and metric fluctuation up to second order, which naturally breaks conformal symmetry in the electromagnetic (EM) sector. We also include parity violation in the electromagnetic sector with the motivation that has potential observational significance. In such a set-up, we explore the evolution of EM, scalar, and tensor perturbations considering different observational constraints. In our analysis we emphasize the role played by the intermediate reheating phase which has got limited interest in all the previous studies. Assuming the vanishing electrical conductivity during the entire period of reheating, the well-known Faraday electromagnetic induction has been shown to play a crucial role in enhancing the strength of the present-day magnetic field. We show how such physical effects combined with the PLANCK and the large scale magnetic field observation makes a large class of models viable and severely restricts the reheating equation of state parameter within a very narrow range of $0.01 < ω_\mathrm{eff} < 0.27$, which is nearly independent of reheating scenarios we have considered.
Among primordial magnetogenesis models, inflation is a prime candidate to explain the current existence of cosmological magnetic fields. Assuming conformal invariance to be restored after inflation, their energy density decreases as radiation during the decelerating eras of the universe, and in particular during reheating. Without making any assumptions on inflation, on the magnetogenesis mechanism and on how the reheating proceeded, we show that requiring large scale magnetic fields to remain subdominant after inflation gives non-trivial constraints on both the reheating equation of state par…
We investigate the generation of helical magnetic fields and address the baryon asymmetry of the universe from an inflationary magnetogenesis scenario, in which the conformal and parity symmetries of the electromagnetic field are broken through its coupling to the Ricci scalar and to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant via the dual field tensor, so that the generated magnetic field can have a helical nature. Depending on the reheating mechanism, we consider two different cases - (1) instantaneous reheating scenario, in which case the reheating e-fold number is zero, and (2) Kamionkowski reheating scena…
The magnetogenesis scenarios triggered by the early variation of the gauge coupling are critically analyzed. In the absence of sources, it is shown that the electric and magnetic power spectra can be explicitly computed by means of electric-magnetic duality transformations. The remnants of a pre-inflationary expansion and the reheating process break explicitly electric-magnetic duality by inducing Ohmic currents. The generation of large-scale magnetic field and the physical distinction between electric and magnetic observables stems, in this class of models, from the final value reached by the…
As soon as the geometry expands quasi-exponentially the plasma sources are customarily tuned to zero as if the duration of the inflationary phase was immaterial for the gauge field fluctuations at large-scale. The serendipitous disappearance of the plasma (or even the partial neglect of its effects) depends on the symmetries of the system which are, in four space-time dimensions and in the simplest Abelian case, the invariance under Weyl rescaling and the electromagnetic duality symmetry. The quantum, thermal and conducting initial conditions of inflationary magnetogenesis are classified and d…
We reconsider magnetogenesis in the context of three-form inflation, and its backreaction. In particular, we focus on first order perturbation theory during inflation and subsequent radiation era: we discuss the consistency of the perturbative approach, and elaborate on the possible non-Gaussian signatures of the model.
The temperature and polarization anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background are analyzed under the hypothesis that the same inflationary seed accounting for protogalactic magnetism also affects the Einstein-Boltzmann hierarchy whose initial conditions are assigned for typical correlation scales larger than the Hubble radius after matter-radiation equality but before decoupling. Since the primordial gauge spectrum depends on a combination of pivotal parameters of the concordance model, the angular power spectra of the temperature and of the polarization are computed, for the first time, in…
Recently, there are several reports that the cosmic magnetic fields on Mpc scale in void region is larger than $\sim 10^{-15}$G with an uncertainty of a few orders from the current blazar observations. On the other hand, in inflationary magnetogenesis models, additional primordial curvature perturbations are inevitably produced from iso-curvature perturbations due to generated electromagnetic fields. We explore such induced curvature perturbations in a model independent way and obtained a severe upper bound for the energy scale of inflation from the observed cosmic magnetic fields and the obse…
Cosmological magnetic fields pervade the entire universe, from small to large scales. Since they apparently extend into the intergalactic medium, it is tantalizing to believe that they have a primordial origin, possibly being produced during inflation. However, finding consistent scenarios for inflationary magnetogenesis is a challenging theoretical problem. The requirements to avoid an excessive production of electromagnetic energy, and to avoid entering a strong coupling regime characterized by large values for the electromagnetic coupling constant, typically allow one to generate only a tin…
The effective approach is applied to the analysis of inflationary magnetogenesis. Rather than assuming a particular underlying description, all the generally covariant terms potentially appearing with four space-time derivatives in the effective action have been included and weighted by inflaton-dependent couplings. The higher derivatives are suppressed by the negative powers of a typical mass scale whose specific values ultimately depend on the tensor to scalar ratio. During a quasi-de Sitter stage the corresponding corrections always lead to an asymmetry between the hypermagnetic and the hyp…

Provided the quantum fluctuations are amplified in the presence of a classical gauge field configuration the resulting curvature perturbations exhibit a mild statistical anisotropy which should be sufficiently weak not to conflict with current observational data. The curvature power spectra induced by weakly anisotropic initial states are computed here for the first time when the electric and the magnetic gauge couplings evolve at different rates as it happens, for instance, in the relativistic theory of van der Waals interactions. After recovering the results valid for coincident gauge coupli…
We consider inflationary magnetogenesis where the conformal symmetry is broken by the term $f^2(ϕ) F_{αβ} F^{αβ}$. We assume that the magnetic field power spectrum today between 0.1 and $10^4$ Mpc is a power law, with upper and lower limits from observation. This fixes $f$ to be close to a power law in conformal time in the window during inflation when the modes observed today are generated. In contrast to previous work, we do not make any assumptions about the form of $f$ outside these scales. We cover all possible reheating histories, described by an average equation of state $-1/3 <\bar{w} …
We discuss the possibility of successful magnetogenesis during inflation by employing the one-loop effective action of massless QED. The action is strictly non-local and results from the long distance fluctuations of massless charged particles present at the inflationary scale. Most importantly, it encodes the conformal anomaly of QED which is crucial to avoid the vacuum preservation in classical electromagnetism. In particular, we find a blue spectrum for the magnetic field with spectral index $n_B \simeq 2 - α_{\text{e}}$ where $α_{\text{e}}$ depends on both the number of e-folds during infl…
Recent observational claims of magnetic fields stronger than $10^{-16}$ G in the extragalactic medium motivate a new look for their origin in the inflationary magnetogenesis models. In this work we shall review the constraints on the simplest gauge invariant model $f^2(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}$ of inflationary magnetogenesis, and show that in the optimal region of parameter space the anisotropic constraints coming from the induced bispectrum, due to the generated electromagnetic fields, yield the strongest constraints. In this model, only a very fine tuned scenario at an energy scale of inflation as low…
Cosmological inflation provides the initial conditions for the structure formation. However, the origin of large-scale magnetic fields cannot be addressed in this framework. The key issue for this long-standing problem is the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic (EM) field in 4-D. While many approaches have been proposed in the literature for breaking conformal invariance of the EM action, here, we provide a completely new way of looking at the modifications to the EM action and generation of primordial magnetic fields during inflation. We explicitly construct a higher derivative EM act…
In a logamediate inflationary universe model we introduce the curvaton field in order to bring this inflationary model to an end. In this approach we determine the reheating temperature. We also outline some interesting constraints on the parameters that describe our models. Thus, we give the parameter space in this scenario.
Inflationary magnetogenesis has long been assumed to be the most promising mechanism for producing large-scale magnetic fields in our universe. However, generically, such models are plagued with either backreaction or strong coupling problems within the standard framework. This paper has shown that the reheating phase can play a crucial role in alleviating those problems along with CMB. Assuming the electrical conductivity to be negligible during the entire period of reheating, the classic Faraday electromagnetic induction changes the magnetic field's dynamics drastically. Our detailed analysi…
Large-scale magnetogenesis is analyzed within the Palatini approach when the gravitational action is supplemented by a contribution that is nonlinear in the Einstein-Hilbert term. While the addition of the nonlinear terms does not affect the scalar modes of the geometry during the inflationary phase, the tensor-to-scalar ratio is nonetheless suppressed. In this context it is plausible to have a stiff phase following the standard inflationary stage provided the potential has a quintessential form. The large-scale magnetic fields can even be a fraction of the nG over typical length scales of the…
We explore cosmological magnetogenesis in the post-inflationary universe, when the inflaton oscillates around its potential minimum and the universe is effectively dominated by cold matter. During this epoch prior to reheating, large-scale magnetic fields can be significantly produced by the cosmological background. By considering magnetogenesis both during and after inflation, we demonstrate that magnetic fields stronger than 10^{-15} G can be generated on Mpc scales without having strong couplings in the theory, or producing too large electric fields that would dominate the universe.
When the gauge fields have derivative couplings to scalars, like in the case of the relativistic theory of Van der Waals (or Casimir-Polder) interactions, conformal invariance is broken but the magnetic and electric susceptibilities are not bound to coincide. We analyze the formation of large-scale magnetic fields in slow-roll inflation and find that they are generated at the level of a few hundredths of a nG and over typical length scales between few Mpc and $100$ Mpc. Using a new time parametrization that reduces to conformal time but only for coincident susceptibilities, the gauge action is…
We explore the enhancement of an electromagnetic field in an inflationary background with an anti-conductive plasma of scalar particles. The scalar particles are created by Schwinger effect in curved spacetime and backreact to the electromagnetic field. The possibility of a negative conductivity was recently put forward in the context of the renormalization of the Schwinger induced current in de Sitter spacetime. While a negative conductivity enhances the produced magnetic field, we find that it is too weak to seed the observed intergalactic magnetic field today. This results on pair creation …
This analysis aims at exploring what can be said about the growth rate of magnetized inhomogeneities under two concurrent hypotheses: a phase of quasi-de Sitter dynamics driven by a single inflaton field and the simultaneous presence of a spectator field coupled to gravity and to the gauge sector. Instead of invoking ad hoc correlations between the various components, the system of scalar inhomogeneities is diagonalized in terms of two gauge-invariant quasi-normal modes whose weighted sum gives the curvature perturbations on comoving orthogonal hypersurfaces. The predominance of the convention…
The tensor to scalar ratio is affected by the evolution of the large-scale gauge fields potentially amplified during an inflationary stage of expansion. After deriving the exact evolution equations for the scalar and tensor modes of the geometry in the presence of dynamical gauge fields, it is shown that the tensor to scalar ratio is bounded from below by the dominance of the adiabatic contribution and it cannot be smaller than one thousands whenever the magnetogenesis is driven by a single inflaton field.
While during inflation a phase of increasing gauge coupling allows for a scale-invariant hyperelectric spectrum, when the coupling decreases a flat hypermagnetic spectrum can be generated for typical wavelengths larger than the effective horizon. After the gauge coupling flattens out the late-time hypermagnetic power spectra outside the horizon in the radiation epoch are determined by the hyperelectric fields at the end of inflation whereas the opposite is true in the case of decreasing coupling. Instead of imposing an abrupt freeze after inflation, we consider a smooth evolution of the mode f…
We investigate the matter creation processes during the reheating period at the end of inflation in the early Universe, by using the irreversible thermodynamic of open systems. The matter content of the Universe is assumed to consist of the inflationary scalar field, which, through its decay, generates relativistic matter, and pressureless dark matter, respectively. At the early stages of reheating the inflationary scalar field transfers its energy to the newly created matter particles, with the field energy decreasing to near zero. The general equations governing the irreversible matter creat…
We show how to constrain inflationary models and reheating by using mixed constraints. In particular we study the physics of the reheating phase after inflation from observational constraints to the inflationary stage. We show that it is possible to determine $ω$, the equation of state during reheating, by using the reported values of the spectral index and the {\it full} number of $e$-folds $N(n_s,ω)= N_H(n_s)+N_{re}(n_s,w)\approx 60$, which includes the accelerated expansion and the reheating phase. We show that the reheating number of $e$-folds $N_{re}$ is quite sensitive to this equation o…
Primordial magnetic fields are generated during inflation by considering actions that break the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic field. To break the conformal invariance, the electromagnetic fields are coupled either to the inflaton or to the scalar curvature. Also, a parity violating term is often added to the action in order to enhance the amplitudes of the primordial electromagnetic fields. In this work, we examine the effects of deviations from slow roll inflation on the spectra of non-helical as well as helical electromagnetic fields. We find that, in the case of the coupling t…
We investigate the generation of seed magnetic field through the Chern-Simons coupling between the U(1) gauge field and an axion field that commences to oscillate at various epoch, depending on the mass scale. We address axions which begin oscillation during inflation, reheating, and also the radiation dominated era after the thermalization of the Universe. We study the resonant generation mechanisms and highlight that a small oscillation time scale with respect to that of the cosmic expansion can lead to an efficient generation of (hyper) magnetic field via resonant generation, even for ${\ca…
The most studied mechanism of inflationary magnetogenesis relies on the time-dependence of the coefficient of the gauge kinetic term $F_{μν}\,{F}^{μν}$. Unfortunately, only extremely finely tuned versions of the model can consistently generate the cosmological magnetic fields required by observations. We propose a generalization of this model, where also the pseudoscalar invariant $F_{μν}\,\tilde{F}^{μν}$ is multiplied by a time dependent function. The new parity violating term allows more freedom in tuning the amplitude of the field at the end of inflation. Moreover, it leads to a helical mag…
The simplest gauge invariant models of inflationary magnetogenesis are known to suffer from the problems of either large backreaction or strong coupling, which make it difficult to self-consistently achieve cosmic magnetic fields from inflation with a field strength larger than $10^{-32} G$ today on the $\Mpc$ scale. Such a strength is insufficient to act as seed for the galactic dynamo effect, which requires a magnetic field larger than $10^{-20} G$. In this paper we analyze simple extensions of the minimal model, which avoid both the strong coupling and back reaction problems, in order to ge…
With the growing consensus on simple power law inflation models not being favored by the PLANCK observations, dynamics for the non-standard inflation gain significant interest in the recent past. In this paper, we analyze in detail a class of supergravity inspired phenomenological inflationary models with non-polynomial potential based on Maity (Nucl.Phys. B919 (2017) 560), and compare the model predictions with the currently most favored Starobinsky and its generalized $α$-attractor models in the ($n_s$ , $r$) plane constrained by PLANCK. Importantly for a wide range of parameter space, our m…
We study $α$-attractor models with both E-model and T-model potential in an extended Non-Minimal Derivative (NMD) inflation where a canonical scalar field and its derivatives are non-minimally coupled to gravity. We calculate the evolution of perturbations during this regime. Then by adopting inflation potentials of the model we show that in the large N and small $α$ limit, value of the scalar spectral index ns and tensor to scalar ratio r are universal. Next, we study reheating after inflation in this formalism. We obtain some constraints on the model's parameter space by adopting the results…

[Abridged] As is well known, in order to generate magnetic fields of observed amplitudes during inflation, the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic field has to be broken by coupling it either to the inflaton or to the scalar curvature. Couplings to scalar curvature pose certain challenges even in slow roll inflation and it seems desirable to consider couplings to the inflaton. It can be shown that, in slow roll inflation, to generate nearly scale invariant magnetic fields of adequate strengths, the non-conformal coupling to the inflaton has to be chosen specifically depending on the in…
The curvaton reheating in a non-oscillatory inflationary universe model is studied in a Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. For different scenarios, the temperature of reheating is computed. The result tells us that the reheating temperature becomes practically independent of the Jordan-Brans-Dicke parameter $w$. This reheating temperature results to be quite different when compared with that obtained from Einstein`s theory of gravity.
It is well known that the inflationary scenario often displays different sets of degeneracies in its predictions for CMB observables. These degeneracies usually arise either because multiple inflationary models predict similar values for the scalar spectral index $n_{_S}$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, or because within the same model, the values of $\lbrace n_{_S}, r \rbrace$ are insensitive to some of the model parameters, making it difficult for CMB observations alone to constitute a unique probe of inflationary cosmology. We demonstrate that by taking into account constraints on the p…
Reheating is an important part of inflationary cosmology. It describes the production of Standard Matter particles after the phase of accelerated expansion. We give a review of the reheating process, focusing on an in-depth discussion of the preheating stage which is characterized by exponential particle production due to a parametric resonance or tachyonic instability. We give a brief overview of the thermalization process after preheating and end with a survey of some applications to supersymmetric theories and to other issues in cosmology such as baryogenesis, dark matter and metric preheat…
Reheating is the the epoch which connects inflation to the subsequent hot Big-Bang phase. Conceptually very important, this era is however observationally poorly known. We show that the current Planck satellite measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies constrain the kinematic properties of the reheating era for most of the inflationary models. This result is obtained by deriving the marginalized posterior distributions of the reheating parameter for about 200 models taken in Encyclopaedia Inflationaris. Weighted by the statistical evidence of each model to explain the …
The curvaton reheating in a tachyonic inflationary universe model with an exponential potential is studied. We have found that the energy density in the kinetic epoch, has a complicated dependencies of the scale factor. For different scenarios, the temperature of reheating is computed. These temperature result to be analogous to those obtained in the standard case of the curvaton scenario.
In this work we address the reheating issue in the context of $F(R)$ gravity, for theories that the inflationary era does not obey the slow-roll condition but the constant-roll condition is assumed. As it is known, the reheating era takes place after the end of the inflationary era, so we investigate the implications of a constant-roll inflation era on the reheating era. We quantify our considerations by calculating the reheating temperature for the constant-roll $R^2$ model and we compare to the standard reheating temperature in the context of $F(R)$ gravity. As we demonstrate, the new reheat…
In this paper we constrain some aspects of the general postinflationary phase in the context of superconformal $α$-attractor models of inflation. In particular, we provide constraints on the duration of the reheating process, $N_{reh}$, and on the reheating temperature, $T_{reh}$, simulating possible and future results given by the next-generation of cosmological missions. Moreover, we stress what kinds of equation-of-state parameter, $w_{reh}$, are favored for different scenarios. The analysis does not depend on the details of the reheating phase and it is performed assuming different measure…
After Planck 2013, a broad class of inflationary models called α-attractors was developed which has universal observational predictions. For small values of the parameter α, the models have good consistency with the recent CMB data. In this work, we first calculate analytically (and verify numerically) the predictions of these models for spectral index, n_s and tensor-to-scalar ratio, r and then using BICEP2/Keck 2015 data we impose constraints on α-attractors. Then, we study the reheating in α-attractors. The reheating temperature, T_{re} and the number of e-folds during reheating, N_{re} are…
We investigate what can be said about the interaction of scalar fields with Abelian gauge fields during a quasi-de Sitter phase of expansion and under the assumption that the electric and the magnetic susceptibilities do not coincide. The duality symmetry, transforming the magnetic susceptibility into the inverse of the electric susceptibility, exchanges the magnetic and electric power spectra. The mismatch between the two susceptibilities determines an effective refractive index affecting the evolution of the canonical fields. The constraints imposed by the duration of the inflationary phase …
We present the first Bayesian constraints on the single field inflationary reheating era obtained from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data. After demonstrating that this epoch can be fully characterized by the so-called reheating parameter, we show that it is constrained by the seven years Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropies Probe (WMAP7) data for all large and small field models. An interesting feature of our approach is that it yields lower bounds on the reheating temperature which can be combined with the upper bounds associated with gravitinos production. For large field models, we find th…
We consider $R^2$ inflation in the Palatini gravity assuming the existence of scalar fields, coupled to gravity in the most general manner. These theories, in the Einstein frame, and for one scalar field $h$, share common features with $K$ - inflation models. We apply this formalism for the study of popular inflationary models, whose potentials are monomials, $ V \sim h^{n} $, with $ n $ a positive even integer. We also study the Higgs model non-minimally coupled to gravity. Although these have been recently studied, in the framework of the Palatini approach, we show that the scalar power spec…
We investigate pair creation by an electric field in four-dimensional de Sitter space. The expectation value of the induced current is computed, using the method of adiabatic regularization. Under strong electric fields the behavior of the current is similar to that in flat space, while under weak electric fields the current becomes inversely proportional to the mass squared of the charged field. Thus we find that the de Sitter space obtains a large conductivity under weak electric fields in the presence of a charged field with a tiny mass. We then apply the results to constrain electromagneti…
We investigate the inflationary dynamics of two kinetically-coupled massless $U(1)$ gauge fields with time-varying kinetic-term coefficients. Ensuring that the system does not have strongly coupled regimes shrinks the parameter space. Also, we further restrict ourselves to systems that can be quantized using the standard creation, annihilation operator algebra. This second constraint limits us to scenarios where the system can be diagonalized into the sum of two decoupled, massless, vector fields with a varying kinetic-term coefficient. Such a system might be interesting for magnetogenesis bec…
In the present work, we examine the following points in the context of the recently proposed curvature coupling helical magnetogenesis scenario \cite{Bamba:2021wyx} -- (1) whether the model is consistent with the predictions of perturbative quantum field theory (QFT), and (2) whether the curvature perturbation induced by the generated electromagnetic (EM) field during inflation is consistent with the Planck data. Such requirements are well motivated in order to argue the viability of the magnetogenesis model under consideration. Actually, the magnetogenesis scenario proposed in \cite{Bamba:202…
We study the cosmological particle creation in the tachyon inflation based on the D-brane dynamics in the RSII model extended to include matter in the bulk. The presence of matter modifies the warp factor which results in two effects: a modification of the RSII cosmology and a modification of the tachyon potential. Besides, a string theory D-brane supports among other fields a U(1) gauge field reflecting open strings attached to the brane. We demonstrate how the interaction of the tachyon with the U(1) gauge field drives cosmological creation of massless particles and estimate the resulting re…
At astrophysical and cosmological scales, there is a detectable amount of magnetic field. There are several probable origins for this observed magnetic field, including the possibility of its origin in the early Universe. There are several models for primordial magnetogenesis, and if the inflationary background is taken into account, broken conformal invariance is required to generate a sufficient amount of magnetic field. The breaking of conformal invariance is introduced either by new couplings between electromagnetic field and inflaton field or including higher derivative terms to the theor…
