In these notes we discuss the conservation of the energy for weak solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. Weak solutions with vorticity in $L^\infty_t L^p_x$ with $p\geq 3/2$ are always conservative, while for less integrable vorticity the conservation of the energy may depend on the approximation method used to construct the solution. Here we prove that the canonical approximations introduced by DiPerna and Majda provide conservative solutions when the initial vorticity is in the class $L(\log L)^α$ with $α>1/2$.
We show that particle trajectories for positive vorticity solutions to the 2D Euler equations on fairly general bounded simply connected domains cannot reach the boundary in finite time. This includes domains with possibly nowhere $C^1$ boundaries and having corners with arbitrary angles, and can fail without the sign hypothesis when the domain has large angle corners. Hence positive vorticity solutions on such domains are Lagrangian, and we also obtain their uniqueness if the vorticity is initially constant near the boundary.
We study the evolution of solutions to the 2D Euler equations whose vorticity is sharply concentrated in the Wasserstein sense around a finite number of points. Under the assumption that the vorticity is merely $L^p$ integrable for some $p>2$, we show that the evolving vortex regions remain concentrated around points, and these points are close to solutions to the Helmholtz--Kirchhoff point vortex system.
For the two dimensional Euler equations, a classical result by Yudovich states that solutions are unique in the class of bounded vorticity; it is a celebrated open problem whether this uniqueness result can be extended in other integrability spaces. We prove in this note that such uniqueness theorem fails in the class of vector fields $u$ with uniformly bounded kinetic energy and vorticity in the Lorentz space $L^{1, \infty}$.
The aim of this manuscript is to study the influence of the vorticity on the existence time in fluid systems for which global smoothness and decay is known in the case of small irrotational data. We focus on two examples: the Euler-Korteweg system and the two-fluid Euler Maxwell system. We prove that the lower bound of the lifespan of these systems is no less than the inverse of the $H^s$ $(s>5/2)$ norm of the rotational part of the initial velocity. Our approach is based on energy estimates and the fast time decay results of global solutions to these systems with small irrotational initial da…
In this paper we prove the uniform-in-time $L^p$ convergence in the inviscid limit of a family $ω^ν$ of solutions of the $2D$ Navier-Stokes equations towards a renormalized/Lagrangian solution $ω$ of the Euler equations. We also prove that, in the class of solutions with bounded vorticity, it is possible to obtain a rate for the convergence of $ω^ν$ to $ω$ in $L^p$. Finally, we show that solutions of the Euler equations with $L^p$ vorticity, obtained in the vanishing viscosity limit, conserve the kinetic energy. The proofs are given by using both a (stochastic) Lagrangian approach and an Euler…

We consider the 2D incompressible Euler equation on a corner domain $Ω$ with angle $νπ$ with $\frac{1}{2}<ν<1$. We prove that if the initial vorticity $ω_0 \in L^{1}(Ω)\cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$ and if $ω_0$ is non-negative and supported on one side of the angle bisector of the domain, then the weak solutions are unique. This is the first result which proves uniqueness when the velocity is far from Lipschitz and the initial vorticity is nontrivial around the boundary.
In this paper, we consider steady Euler flows in a planar bounded domain in which the vorticity is sharply concentrated in a finite number of disjoint regions of small diameter. Such flows are closely related to the point vortex model and can be regarded as desingularization of point vortices. By an adaption of the vorticity method, we construct a family of steady Euler flows in which the vorticity is concentrated near a global minimum point of the Robin function of the domain, and the corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function. Further…
It is well-known that the dynamics of vortices in an ideal incompressible two-dimensional fluid contained in a bounded not necessarily simply connected smooth domain is described by the Kirchhoff--Routh point vortex system. In this paper, we revisit the classical problem of how well solutions to the Euler equations approximate these vortex dynamics and extend previous rigorous results to the case where the vorticity field is unbounded. More precisely, we establish estimates for the $2$-Wasserstein distance between the vorticity and the empirical measure associated with the point vortex dynamic…
It is challenging to perform a multiscale analysis of mesoscopic systems exhibiting singularities at the macroscopic scale. In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations $$\mathrm{St} \partial_t F + v\cdot \nabla_x F = \frac{1}{\mathrm{Kn}} Q(F ,F ) $$ toward the singular solutions of 2D incompressible Euler equations whose vorticity is unbounded $$\partial_t u + u \cdot \nabla_x u + \nabla_x p = 0,\text{div }u =0.$$ We obtain a microscopic description of the singularity through the so-called kinetic vorticity and understand its behavior in the vicinity of the macro…
We consider the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations without swirl on some bounded axial symmetric domains. In this setting, well-posedness is well known due to the essentially 2D geometry. The quantity $ω^θ/r$ plays the role of vorticity in 2D. First, we prove that the gradient of $ω^θ/r$ can grow at most double exponentially with improving a priori bound close to the axis of symmetry. Next, on the unit ball, we show that at the boundary, one can achieve double exponential growth of the gradient of $ω^θ/r$.
We construct a family of steady solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation in a general bounded domain, such that the vorticity is supported in two well-separated regions of small diameter and converges to a pair of point vortices with opposite signs. Compared with previous results, we do not need to assume the existence of an isolated local minimum point of the Kirchhoff-Routh function. Moreover, due to their variational nature, the solutions obtained are Lyapunov stable in $L^p$ norm of the vorticity. The proofs are achieved by maximizing the kinetic energy over an approp…
This paper proves that the motion of small-slope vorticity fronts in the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations is approximated on cubically nonlinear timescales by a Burgers-Hilbert equation derived by Biello and Hunter (2010) using formal asymptotic expansions. The proof uses a modified energy method to show that the contour dynamics equations for vorticity fronts in the Euler equations and the Burgers-Hilbert equation are both approximated by the same cubically nonlinear asymptotic equation. The contour dynamics equations for Euler vorticity fronts are also derived.

Motivated by the works of Cheskidov, Lopes Filho, Nussenzveig Lopes and Shvydkoy in [8, Commun. Math. Phys. 348: 129-143, 2016] and Chen and Yu in [5, J. Math. Pures Appl. 131: 1-16, 2019], we address how the $L^p$ control of vorticity could influence the energy conservation for the incompressible homogeneous and nonhomogeneous Euler equations in this paper. For the homogeneous flow in the periodic domain or whole space, we provide a self-contained proof for the criterion $ω=\text{curl}u\in L^{3}(0,T;L^{\frac{3n}{n+2}}(Ω))\,(n=2,3)$, which generalizes the corresponding result in [8] and can be…
Fractional Navier-Stokes equations -- featuring a fractional Laplacian -- provide a `bridge' between the Euler equations (zero diffusion) and the Navier-Stokes equations (full diffusion). The problem of whether an initially smooth flow can spontaneously develop a singularity is a fundamental problem in mathematical physics, open for the full range of models -- from Euler to Navier-Stokes. The purpose of this work is to present a hybrid, geometric-analytic regularity criterion for solutions to the 3D fractional Navier-Stokes equations expressed as a balance -- in the average sense -- between th…
In this paper, we study desingularization of vortices for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the full plane. We construct a family of steady vortex pairs for the Euler equations with a general vorticity function, which constitutes a desingularization of a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. The results are obtained by using an improved vorticity method.
