Imaging individual vacancies in solids and revealing their interactions with solute atoms remains one of the frontiers in microscopy and microanalysis. Here we study a creep-deformed binary Ni-2 at.% Ta alloy. Atom probe tomography reveals a random distribution of Ta. Field ion microscopy, with contrast interpretation supported by density-functional theory and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, evidences a positive correlation of tantalum with vacancies. Our results support solute-vacancy binding, which explains improvement in creep resistance of Ta-containing Ni-based superalloys and helps guide future material design strategies.
We present an extensive first-principles database of solute-vacancy, homoatomic, heteroatomic solute-solute, and solute-solute-vacancy binding energies of relevant alloying elements in aluminum. We particularly focus on the systems with major alloying elements in aluminum, i.e., Cu, Mg, and Si. We consider physical factors such as solute size and formation energies of intermetallic compounds to correlate with binding energies. Systematic studies of the homoatomic solute-solute-vacancy and heteroatomic (Cu, Mg, or Si)-solute-vacancy complexes reveal the overarching effect of the vacancy in stab…
Atomic-scale calculations indicate that both stress effects and chemical binding contribute to the redistribution of solute in the presence of vacancy clusters in magnesium alloys. As the size of the vacancy cluster increases, chemical binding becomes more important relative to stress. By affecting the diffusivity of vacancies and vacancy clusters, solute atoms facilitate clustering and stabilize the resulting vacancy clusters, increasing their potential to promote solute segregation and to serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites during precipitation. Experimental observation of solute segrega…
Radiation-induced segregation (RIS) of solutes in materials exposed to irradiation is a well-known problem. It affects the life-time of nuclear reactor core components by favouring radiation-induced degradation phenomena such as hardening and embrittlement. In this work, RIS tendencies in face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni-X (X = Cr, Fe, Ti, Mn, Si, P) dilute binary alloys are examined. The goal is to investigate the driving forces and kinetic mechanisms behind the experimentally observed segregation. By means of ab initio calculations, point-defect stabilities and interactions with solutes are dete…
Active room temperature diffusion-less climb of the <a> edge dislocations in model Mg-Al alloys was observed using molecular dynamics simulations. Dislocations on prismatic and pyramidal I planes climb through the basal plane to overcome solute obstacles. This out-of-plane dislocation motion softens the high resistance pyramidal I glide and significantly reduces the anisotropy of dislocation mobility, and could help improve the ductility of Mg. The flow stress scales linearly with solute concentration, cAl. Dislocations climb predominantly in the negative direction, with climb angle on the ord…
The mobility of vacancies in alloys may limit dislocation climb. Using a combined density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo approach we investigate vacancy diffusion in Ni-Re, Ni-W, and Ni-Ta binary alloys up to 10 at.% solute concentration. We introduce an interaction model that takes into account the chemical environment close to the diffusing atom to capture the effect of solute-host and solute-solute interactions on the diffusion barriers. In contrast to an ideal solid solution it is not only the diffusion barrier of the solute atom that influences the vacancy mobility, but primari…
This work reports on temperature-induced out-diffusion and concentration decay of the prominent intrinsic point defect VNi (nickel vacancy) in the wide-gap p-type semiconductor nickel oxide (NiO). VNi can easily be introduced into NiO thin films by offering high oxygen partial pressures during film growth, rendering nonstoichiometric semiconducting structures. However, exposure to lower oxygen supply after growth, e.g. in a standard atmosphere, usually leads to a gradual decrease of film conductivity, because the vacancy concentration equilibrates. In this study, we observe this process in sit…
Incorporation of surface correction and anharmonic correction to vacancy formation energy for nickel and copper: bridging the gap between Density Functional Theory and experiment
There is a continuous search for solid-state spin qubits operating at room temperature with excitation in the IR communication bandwidth. Recently we have introduced the photoelectric detection of magnetic resonance (PDMR) to read the electron spin state of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, a technique which is promising for applications in quantum information technology. By measuring photoionization spectra on a diamond crystal we found two ionization thresholds that were not reported before. On the same sample we also observed absorption and photoluminescence signatures that were iden…
Solute clusters in long period stacking order (LPSO) alloys play a key role in their idiosyncratic plastic behavior, for example kink formation and kink strengthening. Identifying atomistic details of cluster structures is a prerequisite for atomistic modeling of LPSO alloys and is crucial for improving their strength and ductility; however, there is much uncertainty regarding interstitial atoms in the cluster. Although density functional theory calculations have shown that the inclusion of Mg interstitial atoms is energetically most favorable in majority of LPSO alloys, solute elements have a…
The development of long range order in nickel-chromium alloys is of great technological interest but the kinetics and mechanisms of the transformation are poorly understood. The present research utilizes a combined computational and experimental approach to elucidate the mechanism by which phosphorus accelerates the ordering rate of stoichiometric Ni_2Cr in Ni-Cr alloys. A series of Ni-33%Cr-x%P samples (in atomic percent) were fabricated with phosphorus concentrations, x = <0.005-0.1 at.% and aged between 373 and 470°C for times up to 3000 h. The first-principles modeling considers fcc Ni wit…
Master equation approach to the theory of diffusion in alloys and calculations of enhancement factors for tracer solvent and tracer solute diffusion in FCC alloys
A general solution for vacancy-mediated diffusion in the dilute-vacancy/dilute-solute limit for arbitrary crystal structures is derived from the master equation. A general numerical approach to the vacancy lattice Green function reduces to the sum of a few analytic functions and numerical integration of a smooth function over the Brillouin zone for arbitrary crystals. The Dyson equation solves for the Green function in the presence of a solute with arbitrary but finite interaction range to compute the transport coefficients accurately, efficiently and automatically, including cases with very l…
Understanding how properties of materials change due to nuclear transmutations is a major challenge for the design of structural components for a fusion power plant. In this study, by combining a first-principles matrix Hamiltonian approach with thermodynamic integration we investigate quasi-steady state configurations of multi-component alloys, containing defects, over a broad range of temperature and composition. The model enables simulating transmutation-induced segregation effects in materials, including tungsten where the phenomenon is strongly pronounced. Finite-temperature analysis show…
Al-Mg-Si alloys with total solute contents ranging from 0.8 to 1.4 wt.% were solutionised, quenched and then artificially aged (AA) at 180 °C, after which positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to obtain information about precipitation and vacancy evolution during preceding ageing. Hardness and electrical resistivity measurements were carried out to complement these measurements. AA was carried out in four different heating media, which allowed for varying the heating rate from 2.4 K/s to 170 K/s. The main result of the study is that there is a competition between vacancy loss…
Recent ab-initio calculations showed that oversized solute atoms (OSA) in BCC and FCC iron exhibit a very strong attraction with a nearby vacancy (V) at first neighbour distance (1NN). The attraction it is so large that the 1NN pair OSA+V is no longer stable and relaxes spontaneously towards a new configuration where the OSA sits in the middle of the bond, the two ends of which are decorated with two half-vacancies (V/2). Taking into account the formation of this complex V/2+OSA+V/2 in the migration process has never been done before: it requires a new formulation of correlation effects. This …
Sustained external forces acting on a material provide additional mechanisms to evolve the state of the system, and these mechanisms do not necessarily obey the microscopic detailed balance. Therefore, standard methods to compute the thermodynamic and kinetic properties do not apply in such driven systems. The competition between these mechanisms and the standard thermally activated jumps leads to non-equilibrium steady states. We extend the Self-Consistent Mean Field theory to take into account forced atomic relocations (FARs) as a model of these additional kinetic mechanisms. The theory is a…
Although many processes of nanostructure evolution in solids occur at elevated temperatures, basic data obtained from ground state energetics are used in the modeling of these phenomena. In order to illustrate the effect of phonon and electron excitations on the free binding energy of defect clusters, first-principles calculations are performed for vacancy-solute pairs as well as vacancy and Cu dimers, trimers, and quadromers in bcc Fe. Based on the equilibrium atomic positions determined by the relaxation of the supercell with the defect in the ground state under constant volume (CV) as well …
Large (> 100 mm$^3$), relatively pure (type II) and low birefringence single crystal diamond can be produced by high pressure high temperature (HPHT) synthesis. In this study we examine a HPHT sample of good crystalline perfection, containing less than 1 ppb (part per billion carbon atoms) of boron impurity atoms in the {001} growth sector and only tens of ppb of nitrogen impurity atoms. It is shown that the boundaries between {111} and {113} growth sectors are decorated by negatively charged nitrogen vacancy centres (NV$^-$): no decoration is observed at any other type of growth sector interf…
A method based on the Gibbs' adsorption isotherm is developed to calculate the decrease in interfacial free energy resulting from solute segregation at an internal interface, built on measured concentration profiles. Utilizing atom-probe tomography (APT), we first measure a concentration profile of the relative interfacial excess of solute atoms across an interface. To accomplish this we utilize a new method based on J. W. Cahn's formalism for the calculation of the Gibbs interfacial excess. We also introduce a method to calculate the decrease in interfacial free energy that is caused by the s…
Accurate prediction of vacancy migration energy barriers, $ΔE_a$, in multi-component alloys is extremely challenging yet critical for the development of diffusional transformation kinetics needed to model alloy behavior in many technological applications. Here, results from $ΔE_a$ and the energy driving force $ΔE$ of many (>1000) vacancy migration events calculated using density functional theory and nudged elastic band method show large changes (~1eV) of $ΔE_a$ in different local chemical environments of the model face-centered cubic Al-Mg-Zn alloys. Due to local lattice distortion effects in…
