Let $(X, D_{X})$ be an arbitrary pointed stable curve of topological type $(g_{X}, n_{X})$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that the generalized Hasse-Witt invariants of prime-to-$p$ cyclic admissible coverings of $(X, D_{X})$ attain maximum. As applications, we obtain an anabelian formula for $(g_{X}, n_{X})$, and prove that the field structures associated to inertia subgroups of marked points can be reconstructed group-theoretically from open continuous homomorphisms of admissible fundamental groups. Moreover, the formula for maximum generalized Hasse-Witt invariants and the result concerning reconstructions of field structures play important roles in the theory of moduli spaces of fundamental groups developed by the author of the present paper.
We study the section conjecture of anabelian geometry and the sufficiency of the finite descent obstruction to the Hasse principle for the moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties and of curves over number fields. For the former we show that the section conjecture fails and the finite descent obstruction holds for a general class of adelic points, assuming several well-known conjectures. This is done by relating the problem to a local-global principle for Galois representations. For the latter, we prove some partial results that indicate that the finite descent obstruction suff…
Motivated by the work of Candelas, de la Ossa and Rodriguez-Villegas [6], we study the relations between Hasse-Witt matrices and period integrals of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in both toric varieties and partial flag varieties. We prove a conjecture by Vlasenko [23] on higher Hasse-Witt matrices for toric hypersurfaces following Katz's method of local expansion [14, 15]. The higher Hasse-Witt matrices also have close relation with period integrals. The proof gives a way to pass from Katz's congruence relations in terms of expansion coefficients [15] to Dwork's congruence relations [8] about peri…
The Hasse-Witt matrix of a hypersurface in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ gives essentially complete mod $p$ information about the zeta function of the hypersurface. But if the degree $d$ of the hypersurface is $\leq n$, the zeta function is trivial mod $p$ and the Hasse-Witt matrix is zero-by-zero. We generalize a classical formula for the Hasse-Witt matrix to obtain a matrix that gives a nontrivial congruence for the zeta function for all $d$. We also describe the differential equations satisfied by this matrix and prove that it is generically invertible.
Let X be an irreducible symplectic variety defined over a number field K. Assume either that X has Picard number at least two or that X has even second Betti number. We prove that there exist a finite algebraic field extension L/K and a density 1 set S of non-archimedean places of L such that the reduction of X at any place in S has nonzero Hasse-Witt invariant.
We prove a number of p-adic congruences for the coefficients of powers of a multivariate polynomial f(x) with coefficients in a ring R of characteristic zero. If the Hasse--Witt operation is invertible, our congruences yield p-adic limit formulas which conjecturally describe the Gauss--Manin connection and the Frobenius operator on the unit-root crystal attached to f(x). As a second application, we associate with f(x) formal group laws over R. Under certain assumptions these formal group laws are coordinalizations of the Artin--Mazur functors. (This is a final version which we send for a publi…
We identify the $p$-adic unit roots of the zeta function of a projective hypersurface over a finite field of characteristic $p$ as the eigenvalues of a product of special values of a certain matrix of $p$-adic series. That matrix is a product $F(Λ^p)^{-1}F(Λ)$, where the entries in the matrix $F(Λ)$ are $A$-hypergeometric series with integral coefficients and $F(Λ)$ is independent of $p$.
We give a short combinatorial proof of the generic invertibility of the Hasse-Witt matrix of a projective hypersurface. We also examine the relationship between the Hasse-Witt matrix and certain $A$-hypergeometric series, which is what motivated the proof.
Let X be a curve in positive characteristic. A Hasse--Witt matrix for X is a matrix that represents the action of the Frobenius operator on the cohomology group H^1(X,O_X) with respect to some basis. A Cartier--Manin matrix for X is a matrix that represents the action of the Cartier operator on the space of holomorphic differentials of X with respect to some basis. The operators that these matrices represent are adjoint to one another, so Hasse--Witt matrices and the Cartier--Manin matrices are related to one another, but there seems to be a fair amount of confusion in the literature about the…

We consider the KZ differential equations over $\mathbb C$ in the case, when the hypergeometric solutions are one-dimensional integrals. We also consider the same differential equations over a finite field $\mathbb F_p$. We study the space of polynomial solutions of these differential equations over $\mathbb F_p$, constructed in a previous work by V. Schechtman and the second author. Using Hasse-Witt matrices we identify the space of these polynomial solutions over $\mathbb F_p$ with the space dual to a certain subspace of regular differentials on an associated curve. We also relate these poly…
We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for homogeneous spaces with nilpotent stabilizer. We thus generalize recent results by Harpaz and Wittenberg on finite "hyper-solvable" stabilizers. In particular, this result is true for abelian stabilizers without any hypotheses on the ambient group, which generalizes classic results by Borovoi on the subject. We prove moreover that these spaces have the real approximation property. On montre que l'obstruction de Brauer-Manin est la seule obstruction au principe de Hasse pour les espaces homogènes à sta…
Up until now, it was recognized that a large number of 2-torsion points was a technical barrier to improve the bounds for the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication in every extension of any finite field. In this paper, we show that there are two exceptional cases, namely the extensions of $\mathbb{F}_2$ and $\mathbb{F}_3$. In particular, using the definition field descent on the field with 2 or 3 elements of a Garcia-Stichtenoth tower of algebraic function fields which is asymptotically optimal in the sense of Drinfel'd-Vladut and has maximal Hasse-Witt invariant, we obtain a significant imp…
Let $Y$ be a scheme in which 2 is invertible and let $V$ be a rank $n$ vector bundle on $Y$ endowed with a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form $q$. The orthogonal group ${\bf O}(q)$ of the form $q$ is a group scheme over $Y$ whose cohomology ring $H^*(B_{{\bf O}(q)},{\bf Z}/2{\bf Z})\simeq A_Y[HW_1(q),..., HW_n(q)]$ is a polynomial algebra over the étale cohomology ring $A_Y:=H^*(Y_{et},{\bf Z}/2{\bf Z})$ of the scheme $Y$. Here the $HW_i(q)$'s are Jardine's universal Hasse-Witt invariants and $B_{{\bf O}(q)}$ is the classifying topos of ${\bf O}(q)$ as defined by Grothendieck and Giraud. T…
We develop a method to compute the Ekedahl-Oort type of a curve C over a field k of characteristic p (which is the isomorphism type of the p-kernel group scheme J[p], where J is the Jacobian of C). Part of our method is general, in that we introduce the new notion of a Hasse-Witt triple, which re-encodes in a useful way the information contained in the Dieudonne module of J[p]. For complete intersection curves we then give a simple method to compute this Hasse-Witt triple. An implementation of this method is available in Magma.
The relation of the Weierstrass semigroup with several invariants of a curve is studied. For Galois covers of curves with group $G$ we introduce a new filtration of the group decomposition subgroup of $G$. The relation to the ramification filtration is investigated in the case of cyclic covers. We relate our results to invariants defined by Boseck and we study the one point ramification case. We also give applications to Hasse-Witt invariant and symmetric semigroups.
We prove that the essential dimension of the spinor group Spin_n grows exponentially with n; in particular, we give a precise formula for this essential dimension when n is not divisible by 4. We use this result to show that the number of 3-fold Pfister forms needed to represent the Witt class of a general quadratic form of rank n with trivial discriminant and Hasse-Witt invariant grows exponentially with n. This paper overlaps with our earlier preprint arXiv:math/0701903 . That preprint has splintered into several parts, which have since acquired a life of their own. In particular, see "Essen…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective connected curve of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $G$ be a finite group, $P$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $N_G(P)$ its normalizer in $G$. We show that if there exists an étale Galois cover $Y\to X$ with group $N_G(P)$, then $G$ is the Galois group wan étale Galois cover $\mathcal{Y}\to\mathcal{X}$, where the genus of $\mathcal{X}$ depends on the order of $G$, the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and $g$. Suppose that $G$ is an extension of a group $H$ of order prime to $p$ by a $p$-group $P$ and $…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be the algebraic closure of a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic $p$. For a positive integer $m$ prime to $p$, let $F=\mathbb{K}(x,y)$ be the transcendency degree $1$ function field defined by $y^q+y=x^m+x^{-m}$. Let $t=x^{m(q-1)}$ and $H=\mathbb{K}(t)$. The extension $F|H$ is a non-Galois extension. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $F$ with respect to $H$. By a result of Stichtenoth, $K$ has genus $g(K)=(qm-1)(q-1)$, $p$-rank (Hasse-Witt invariant) $γ(K)=(q-1)^2$ and a $\mathbb{K}$-automorphism group of order at least $2q^2m(q-1)$. In this paper we prove that t…
