Localization phenomena of quantum walks makes the propagation dynamics of a walker strikingly different from that corresponding to classical random walks. In this paper, we study the localization phenomena of four-state discrete-time quantum walks on two-dimensional lattices with coin operators as one-parameter orthogonal matrices that are also permutative, a combinatorial structure of the Grover matrix. We show that the proposed walks localize at its initial position for canonical initial coin states when the coin belongs to classes which contain the Grover matrix that we consider in this paper, however, the localization phenomena depends on the coin parameter when the class of parametric coins does not contain the Grover matrix.
We determine connected bipartite regular graphs with four distinct adjacency eigenvalues that induce periodic Grover walks, and show that it is only $C_6$. We also show that there are only three kinds of the second largest eigenvalues of bipartite regular periodic graphs with five distinct eigenvalues. Using walk-regularity, we enumerate feasible spectra for such graphs.
Characterizations graphs of some classes to induce periodic Grover walks have been studied for recent years. In particular, for the strongly regular graphs, it has been known that there are only three kinds of such graphs. Here, we focus on the periodicity of the Grover walks on distance-regular graphs. The distance-regular graph can be regarded as a kind of generalization of the strongly regular graphs and the typical graph with an equitable partition. In this paper, we find some classes of such distance-regular graphs and obtain some useful necessary conditions to induce periodic Grover walk…
We study perfect state transfer in Grover walks, which are typical discrete-time quantum walk models. In particular, we focus on states associated to vertices of a graph. We call such states vertex type states. Perfect state transfer between vertex type states can be studied via Chebyshev polynomials. We derive a necessary condition on eigenvalues of a graph for perfect state transfer between vertex type states to occur. In addition, we perfectly determine the complete multipartite graphs whose partite sets are the same size on which perfect state transfer occurs between vertex type states, to…
This paper explains the periodicity of the Grover walk on finite graphs. We characterize the graphs to induce 2, 3, 4, 5-periodic Grover walk and obtain a necessary condition of the graphs to induce an odd-periodic Grover walk.
We consider a quantum walk model on a finite graph which has an interaction with the outside. Here a quantum walker from the outside penetrates the graph and also a quantum walker in the graph goes out to the outside at every time step. This dynamics of the quantum walk converges to a stationary state. In this paper, we estimate the speed of the convergence to the stationary state on the $κ$-regular graph with the uniformly inserting of the inflow to the graph. We show that larger degree of the regular graph makes the convergence speed of this quantum walk model slower.
The Grover walk is one of the most well-studied quantum walks on graphs. In this paper, we investigate its periodicity to reveal the relationship between the quantum walk and the underlying graph, focusing particularly on the characterization of graphs exhibiting a periodic Grover walk. Graphs having a periodic Grover walk with periods of $2, 3, 4$, and $5$ have previously been characterized. It is expected that graphs exhibiting a periodic Grover walk with odd period correspond to cycles with odd length. We address that problem and are able to perfectly characterize the class of graphs exhibi…
We obtain stationary measures for the one-dimensional three-state Grover walk with one defect by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. We clarify a relation between stationary and limit measures of the walk.
In this paper, we study Grover walks on a line with one and two absorbing boundaries. In particular, we present some results for the absorbing probabilities both in a semi-finite and finite line. Analytical expressions for these absorbing probabilities are presented by using the combinatorial approach. These results are perfectly matched with numerical simulations. We show that the behavior of Grover walks on a line with absorbing boundaries is strikingly different from that of classical walks and that of Hadamard walks.
In this paper we study a class of discrete quantum walks, known as bipartite walks. These include the well-known Grover's walks. Any discrete quantum walk is given by the powers of a unitary matrix $U$ indexed by arcs or edges of the underlying graph. The walk is periodic if $U^k=I$ for some positive integer $k$. Kubota has given a characterization of periodicity of Grover's walk when the walk is defined on a regular bipartite graph with at most five eigenvalues. We extend Kubota's results--if a biregular graph $G$ has eigenvalues whose squares are algebraic integers with degree at most two, w…
We consider the support of the limit distribution of the Grover walk on crystal lattices with the linear scaling. The orbit of the Grover walk is denoted by the parametric plot of the pseudo-velocity of the Grover walk in the wave space. The region of the orbit is the support of the limit distribution. In this paper, we compute the regions of the orbits for the triangular, hexagonal and kagome lattices. We show every outer frame of the support is described by an ellipse. The shape of the ellipse depends only on the realization of the fundamental lattice of the crystal lattice in $\mathbb{R}^2$…
Multi-dimensional quantum walks usually require large coin spaces. Here we show that the non-localized case of the spatial density probability of the two-dimensional Grover walk can be obtained using only a two-dimensional coin space and a quantum walk in alternate directions. We present a formal proof of this correspondence and analyze the behavior of the coin-position entanglement as well as the x-y spatial entanglement in our scheme with respect to the Grover one. We show that our experimentally simpler scheme allows to entangle the two orthogonal directions of the walk more efficiently.
We consider the Grover walk as a 4-state quantum walk without memory in one dimension. The walker in our 4-state quantum walk moves to the left or right. We compute the stationary distribution of the walk, in addition, we obtain the weak limit theorem
The three-state Grover walk on a line exhibits the localization effect characterized by a non-vanishing probability of the particle to stay at the origin. We present two continuous deformations of the Grover walk which preserve its localization nature. The resulting quantum walks differ in the rate at which they spread through the lattice. The velocities of the left and right-traveling probability peaks are given by the maximum of the group velocity. We find the explicit form of peak velocities in dependence on the coin parameter. Our results show that localization of the quantum walk is not a…
In this paper we extend the study of three state lively quantum walks on cycles by considering the coin operator as a linear sum of permutation matrices, which is a generalization of the Grover matrix. First we provide a complete characterization of orthogonal matrices of order $3\times 3$ which are linear sum of permutation matrices. Consequently, we determine several groups of complex, real and rational orthogonal matrices. We establish that an orthogonal matrix of order $3\times 3$ is a linear sum of permutation matrices if and only if it is permutative. Finally we determine period of livel…
We connect the Grover walk with sinks to the Grover walk with tails. The survival probability of the Grover walk with sinks in the long time limit is characterized by the centered generalized eigenspace of the Grover walk with tails. The centered eigenspace of the Grover walk is the attractor eigenspace of the Grover walk with sinks. It is described by the persistent eigenspace of the underlying random walk whose support has no overlap to the boundaries of the graph and combinatorial flow in the graph theory.
Using the technique of path counting we show non-existence of sojourn times in the Grover walk which is related to the Grover's algorithm in computer science.
In this paper, we consider discrete-time quantum walks with moving shift (MS) and flip-flop shift (FF) on two-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$ and torus $π_N^2=(\mathbb{Z}/N)^2$. Weak limit theorems for the Grover walks on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with MS and FF were given by Watabe et al. and Higuchi et al., respectively. The existence of localization of the Grover walks on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with MS and FF was shown by Inui et al. and Higuchi et al., respectively. Non-existence of localization of the Fourier walk with MS on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ was proved by Komatsu and Tate. Here our simple argument gave non…
We consider a discrete-time quantum walk, called the Grover walk, on a distance regular graph $X$. Given that $X$ has diameter $d$ and invertible adjacency matrix, we show that the square of the transition matrix of the Grover walk on $X$ is a product of at most $d$ commuting transition matrices of continuous-time quantum walks, each on some distance digraph of the line digraph of $X$. We also obtain a similar factorization for any graph $X$ in a Bose Mesner algebra.
We study search by quantum walk on a two-dimensional grid using the algorithm of Ambainis, Kempe and Rivosh [AKR05]. We show what the most natural coin transformation - Grover's diffusion transformation - has a wide class of exceptional configurations of marked locations, for which the probability of finding any of the marked locations does not grow over time. This extends the class of known exceptional configurations; until now the only known such configuration was the "diagonal construction" by Ambainis and Rivosh [AR08]
The discrete quantum walk in N dimensions is analyzed from the perspective of its dispersion relations. This allows understanding known properties, as well as designing new ones when spatially extended initial conditions are considered. This is done by deriving wave equations in the continuum, which are generically of the Schrödinger type, and allow devising interesting behaviors, such as ballistic propagation without deformation, or the generation of almost flat probability distributions, what is corroborated numerically. There are however special points where the energy surfaces display inte…
One of the significant breakthroughs in quantum computation is Grover's algorithm for unsorted database search. Recently, the applications of Grover's algorithm to solve global optimization problems have been demonstrated, where unknown optimum solutions are found by iteratively improving the threshold value for the selective phase shift operator in Grover rotation. In this paper, a hybrid approach that combines continuous-time quantum walks with Grover search is proposed so that the search is accelerated with improved threshold values. By taking advantage of the quantum tunneling effect, bett…
Recently the Ihara zeta function for the finite graph was extended to infinite one by Clair and Chinta et al. In this paper, we obtain the same expressions by a different approach from their analytical method. Our new approach is to take a suitable limit of a sequence of finite graphs via the Konno-Sato theorem. This theorem is related to explicit formulas of characteristic polynomials for the evolution matrix of the Grover walk. The walk is one of the most well-investigated quantum walks which are quantum counterpart of classical random walks. We call the relation between the Grover walk and …
We obtain a structure theorem of the positive support of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk on $k$-regular graph whose girth is greater than $2(n-1)$. This structure theorem is provided by the parity of the amplitude of another quantum walk on the line which depends only on $k$. The phase pattern of this quantum walk has a curious regularity. We also exactly show how the spectrum of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk is obtained by lifting up that of the adjacency matrix to the complex plain.
This paper presents the minimum supports of states for stationary measures of the Grover walk on the d-dimensional lattice by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. The numbers of the minimum supports for moving and flip-flop shifts are 2^d (d ge 1) and 4 (d ge 2), respectively.
In this paper, we study Grover's search algorithm focusing on continuous-time quantum walk on graphs. We propose an alternative optimization approach to Grover's algorithm on graphs that can be summarized as follows: instead of finding specific graph topologies convenient for the related quantum walk, we fix the graph topology and vary the underlying graph Laplacians. As a result, we search for the most appropriate analytical structure on graphs endowed with fixed topologies yielding better search outcomes. We discuss strategies to investigate the optimality of Grover's algorithm and provide a…
In this article, we undertake a detailed study of the limiting behavior of a three-state discrete-time quantum walk on one dimensional lattice with generalized Grover coins. Two limit theorems are proved and consequently we show that the quantum walk exhibits localization at its initial position, for a wide range of coin parameters. Finally, we discuss the effect of the coin parameters on the peak velocities of probability distributions of the underlying quantum walks.
The Grover walk, which is related to the Grover's search algorithm on a quantum computer, is one of the typical discrete time quantum walks. However, a localization of the two-dimensional Grover walk starting from a fixed point is striking different from other types of quantum walks. The present paper explains the reason why the walker who moves according to the degree-four Grover's operator can remain at the starting point with a high probability. It is shown that the key factor for the localization is due to the degeneration of eigenvalues of the time evolution operator. In fact, the global …
The lazy random walk, where the walker has some probability of staying put, is a useful tool in classical algorithms. We propose a quantum analogue, the lackadaisical quantum walk, where each vertex is given $l$ self-loops, and we investigate its effects on Grover's algorithm when formulated as search for a marked vertex on the complete graph of $N$ vertices. For the discrete-time quantum walk using the phase flip coin, adding a self-loop to each vertex boosts the success probability from 1/2 to 1. Additional self-loops, however, decrease the success probability. Using instead the Ambainis, Ke…
In this paper, following the recent paper on Walk/Zeta Correspondence by the first author and his coworkers, we compute the zeta function for the three- and four-state quantum walk and correlated random walk, and the multi-state random walk on the one-dimensional torus by using the Fourier analysis. We deal with also the four-state quantum walk and correlated random walk on the two-dimensional torus. In addition, we introduce a new class of models determined by the generalized Grover matrix bridging the gap between the Grover matrix and the positive-support of the Grover matrix. Finally, we gi…
We propose a twisted Szegedy walk for estimating the limit behavior of a discrete-time quantum walk on a crystal lattice, an infinite abelian covering graph, whose notion was introduced by [14]. First, we show that the spectrum of the twisted Szegedy walk on the quotient graph can be expressed by mapping the spectrum of a twisted random walk onto the unit circle. Secondly, we show that the spatial Fourier transform of the twisted Szegedy walk on a finite graph with appropriate parameters becomes the Grover walk on its infinite abelian covering graph. Finally, as an application, we show that if…
A spidernet is a graph obtained by adding large cycles to an almost regular tree and considered as an example having intermediate properties of lattices and trees in the study of discrete-time quantum walks on graphs. We introduce the Grover walk on a spidernet and its one-dimensional reduction. We derive an integral representation of the $n$-step transition amplitude in terms of the free Meixner law which appears as the spectral distribution. As an application we determine the class of spidernets which exhibit localization. Our method is based on quantum probabilistic spectral analysis of gra…
Quantum walks exhibit properties without classical analogues. One of those is the phenomenon of asymptotic trapping -- there can be non-zero probability of the quantum walker being localised in a finite part of the underlying graph indefinitely even though locally all directions of movement are assigned non-zero amplitudes at each step. We study quantum walks with the flip-flop shift operator and the Grover coin, where this effect has been identified previously. For the version of the walk further modified by a random dynamical disruption of the graph (percolated quantum walks) we provide a re…
We present an in-depth analytic study of discrete-time quantum walks driven by a non-reflective coin. Specifically, we compare the properties of the widely-used Grover coin ${\cal C}_{G}$ that is unitary and reflective (${\cal C}_{G}^{2}=\mathbb{I}$) with those of a $3\times3$ "rotational" coin ${\cal C}_{60}$ that is unitary but non-reflective (${\cal C}_{60}^{2}\not=\mathbb{I}$) and satisfies instead ${\cal C}_{60}^{6}=\mathbb{I}$, which corresponds to a rotation by $60^{\circ}$. While such a modification apparently changes the real-space renormalization group (RG) treatment, we show that no…
We consider the Grover walk on infinite trees from the view point of spectral analysis. From the previous works, infinite regular trees provide localization. In this paper, we give the complete characterization of the eigenspace of this Grover walk, which involves localization of its behavior and recovers the previous works. Our result suggests that the Grover walk on infinite trees may be regarded as a limit of the quantum walk induced by the isotropic random walk with the Dirichlet boundary condition at the $n$-th depth rather than one with the Neumann boundary condition.
Our previous work presented explicit formulas for the generalized zeta function and the generalized Ihara zeta function corresponding to the Grover walk and the positive-support version of the Grover walk on the regular graph via the Konno-Sato theorem, respectively. This paper extends these walks to a class of walks including random walks, correlated random walks, quantum walks, and open quantum random walks on the torus by the Fourier analysis.
We study electric quantum walks in two dimensions considering Grover, Alternate, Hadamard, and DFT quantum walks. In the Grover walk the behaviour under an electric field is easy to summarize: when the field direction coincides with the x or y axes, it produces a transient trapping of the probability distribution along the direction of the field, while when it is directed along the diagonals, a perfect 2D trapping is frustrated. The analysis of the alternate walk helps to understand the behaviour of the Grover walk as both walks are partially equivalent; in particular, it helps to understand t…
Szegedy's quantum walk is a quantization of a classical random walk or Markov chain, where the walk occurs on the edges of the bipartite double cover of the original graph. To search, one can simply quantize a Markov chain with absorbing vertices. Recently, Santos proposed two alternative search algorithms that instead utilize the sign-flip oracle in Grover's algorithm rather than absorbing vertices. In this paper, we show that these two algorithms are exactly equivalent to two algorithms involving coined quantum walks, which are walks on the vertices of the original graph with an internal deg…
We consider the Grover walk on the infinite graph in which an internal finite subgraph receives the inflow from the outside with some frequency and also radiates the outflow to the outside. To characterize the stationary state of this system, which is represented by a function on the arcs of the graph, we introduce a kind of discrete gradient operator twisted by the frequency. Then we obtain a circuit equation which shows that (i) the stationary state is described by the twisted gradient of a potential function which is a function on the vertices; (ii) the potential function satisfies the Pois…
Quantum walks determined by the coin operator on graphs have been intensively studied. The typical examples of coin operator are the Grover and Fourier matrices. The periodicity of the Grover walk is well investigated. However, the corresponding result on the Fourier walk is not known. In this paper, we present a necessary condition for the Fourier walk on regular graphs to have the finite period. As an application of our result, we show that the Fourier walks do not have any finite period for some classes of regular graphs such as complete graphs, cycle graphs with selfloops, and hypercubes.
Dukes (2014) and Konno, Shimizu, and Takei (2017) studied the periodicity for 2-state quantum walks whose coin operator is the Hadamard matrix on cycle graph C_N with N vertices. The present paper treats the periodicity for 3-state quantum walks on C_N. Our results follow from a new method based on cyclotomic field. This method shows a necessary condition for the coin operator of quantum walks to have the finite period. Moreover, we reveal the period T_N of two kinds of typical quantum walks, the Grover and Fourier walks. We prove that both walks do not have any finite period except for N=3, i…
We analyze the role of dimensionality in the time evolution of discrete time quantum walks through the example of the three-state walk on a two-dimensional, triangular lattice. We show that the three-state Grover walk does not lead to trapping (localization) or recurrence to the origin, in sharp contrast to the Grover walk on the two dimensional square lattice. We determine the power law scaling of the probability at the origin with the method of stationary phase. We prove that only a special subclass of coin operators can lead to recurrence and there are no coins leading to localization. The …
