As a black hole evaporates, each outgoing Hawking quantum carries away some of the black holes asymptotic charges associated with the extended Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group. These include the Poincaré charges of energy, linear momentum, intrinsic angular momentum, and orbital angular momentum or center-of-mass charge, as well as extensions of these quantities associated with supertranslations and super-Lorentz transformations, namely supermomentum, superspin and super center-of-mass charges (also known as soft hair). Since each emitted quantum has fluctuations that are of order unity, fluctuations in the black hole's charges grow over the course of the evaporation. We estimate the scale of these fluctuations using a simple model. The results are, in Planck units: (i) The black hole position has a uncertainty of $\sim M_i^2$ at late times, where $M_i$ is the initial mass (previously found by Page). (ii) The black hole mass $M$ has an uncertainty of order the mass $M$ itself at the epoch when $M \sim M_i^{2/3}$, well before the Planck scale is reached. Correspondingly, the time at which the evaporation ends has an uncertainty of order $\sim M_i^2$. (iii) The supermomentum and superspin charges are not independent but are determined from the Poincare charges and the super center-of-mass charges. (iv) The supertranslation that characterizes the super center-of-mass charges has fluctuations at multipole orders $l$ of order unity that that are of order unity in Planck units. At large $l$, there is a power law spectrum of fluctuations that extends up to $l \sim M_i^2/M$, beyond which the fluctuations fall off exponentially, with corresponding total rms shear tensor fluctuations $\sim M_i M^{-3/2}$.
In a recent article, we have shown how quantum fluctuations of the background geometry modify Hawking's density matrix for black hole (BH) radiation. Hawking's diagonal matrix picks up small off-diagonal elements whose influence becomes larger with the number of emitted particles. We have calculated the "time-of-first-bit", when the first bit of information comes out of the BH, and the "transparency time", when the rate of information release becomes order unity. We have found that the transparency time is equal to the "Page time", when the BH has lost half of its initial entropy to the radiat…
We present a paradox for evaporating black holes, which is common in most schemes trying to avoid the firewall by decoupling early and late radiation. At the late stage of the black hole evaporation, the decoupling between early and late radiation can not be realized because the black hole has a very small coarse-grained entropy, then we are faced with the firewall again. We call the problem hair-loss paradox as a pun on losing black hole soft hair during the black hole evaporation and the situation that the information paradox has put so much pressure on researchers.
We study the Hawking evaporation of a class of black hole solutions in dRGT massive gravity, in which the graviton mass gives rise to an effective negative cosmological constant. We found that the effective emission surface can be either proportional to the square of the effective AdS length scale, or corresponds to the square of the impact parameter of the null geodesic that falls onto the photon orbit of the black hole. Furthermore, depending on the black hole parameters, the emission surface could switch from one to another as the black hole loses mass during the evaporation process. Furthe…
We revisit possible glimpses of black-hole formation by looking at ultra-planckian string-string collisions at very high final-state multiplicity. We compare, in particular, previous results using the optical theorem, the resummation of ladder diagrams at arbitrary loop order, and the AGK cutting rules, with the more recent study of $2 \rightarrow N$ scattering at $N \sim s M_P^{-2} \gg 1$. We argue that some apparent tension between the two approaches disappears once a reinterpretation of the latter's results in terms of suitably defined infrared-safe cross sections is adopted. Under that ass…
We show that, in order to preserve the equivalence principle until late times in unitarily evaporating black holes, the thermodynamic entropy of a black hole must be primarily entropy of entanglement across the event horizon. For such black holes, we show that the information entering a black hole becomes encoded in correlations within a tripartite quantum state, the quantum analogue of a one-time pad, and is only decoded into the outgoing radiation very late in the evaporation. This behavior generically describes the unitary evaporation of highly entangled black holes and requires no speciall…
We propose a model with multiple qubits that reproduces the thermal properties of 4-dimensional (4-dim) Schwarzschild black holes (BHs) by simultaneously taking account of the emission of Hawking particles and the zero-energy soft hair evaporation at horizon. The results verify that the entanglement entropy between a qubit and other subsystems, including emitted radiation, is much larger than the BH entropy analogue of the qubit, as opposed to the Page curve prediction. Our result suggests that early Hawking radiation is entangled with soft hair, and that late Hawking radiation can be highly e…
We examine the basic assumptions in the original setup of the firewall paradox. The main claim is that a single mode of the lathe radiation is maximally entangled with the mode inside the horizon and simultaneously with the modes of early Hawking radiation. We argue that this situation never happens during the evolution of a black hole. Quantum mechanics tells us that while the black hole exists, unitary evolution maximally entangles a late mode located just outside the horizon with a combination of early radiation and black hole states, instead of either of them separately. One of the reasons…
Recently, new holographic models of black hole evaporation have given fresh insights into the information paradox [arXiv:1905.08255, arXiv:1905.08762, arXiv:1908.10996]. In these models, the black hole evaporates into an auxiliary bath space after a quantum quench, wherein the holographic theory and the bath are joined. One particularly exciting development is the appearance of "ER=EPR"-like wormholes in the (doubly) holographic model of [arXiv:1908.10996]. At late times, the entanglement wedge of the bath includes the interior of the black hole. In this paper, we employ both numerical and ana…
We propose a modified version of the Horowitz-Maldacena final-state boundary condition based upon a matter-radiation thermalization hypothesis on the Black Hole interior, which translates into a particular entangled state with thermal Schmidt coefficients. We investigate the consequences of this proposal for matter entering the horizon, as described by a Canonical density matrix characterized by the matter temperature $T$. The emitted radiation is explicitly calculated and is shown to follow a thermal spectrum with an effective temperature $T_{eff}$. We analyse the evaporation process in the q…
A toy model based upon the $q$-deformation description for studying the radiation spectrum of black hole is proposed. The starting point is to make an attempt to consider the spacetime noncommutativity in the vicinity of black hole horizon. We use a trick that all the spacetime noncommutative effects are ascribed to the modification of the behavior of the radiation field of black hole and a kind of q-deformed degrees of freedom are postulated to mimic the radiation particles that live on the noncommutative spacetime, meanwhile the background metric is preserved as usual. We calculate the radia…
Using a definition of the bulk frame within 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, we go into the bulk from the Schwarzian boundary. Including the path integral over the Schwarzian degrees of freedom, we discuss the quantum gravitational Unruh effect and the Planckian black-body spectrum of the thermal atmosphere. We analyze matter entanglement entropy and how the entangling surface should be defined in quantum gravity. Finally, we reanalyze a semi-classical model for black hole evaporation studied in JHEP 1607, 139 (2016) and compute the entanglement between early and late Hawking radiation, illustrat…
About twenty years ago Hawking made the remarkable suggestion that the black hole evaporation process will inevitably lead to a fundamental loss of quantum coherence. The mechanism by which the quantum radiation is emitted appears to be insensitive to the detailed history of the black hole, and thus it seems that most of the initial information is lost for an outside observer. However, direct examination of Hawking's original derivation (or any later one) of the black hole emission spectrum shows that one inevitably needs to make reference to particle waves that have arbitrarily high frequency…
We review the phenomenology of mini black holes at colliders in light of the latest data from the LHC. By improving the conventional production cross-section, we show that the current non-observation of black hole signals can be explained in terms of quantum gravity effects. In the most optimistic case, black hole production could take place at a scale slightly above the LHC design energy. We also analyse possible new signatures of quantum-corrected Planck-scale black holes: in contrast to the semiclassical scenario the emission would take place in terms of soft particles mostly on the brane.
We study the process of black brane evaporation through the emission of D-branes. Gravitational solutions describing black branes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, which are holographically dual to field theory states at finite temperature and density, have previously been found to exhibit an instability due to brane nucleation. Working in the setting of D3-branes on the conifold, we construct static Euclidean solutions describing this nucleation to leading order - D3-branes bubbling off the horizon. Furthermore, we analyze the late-time dynamics of such a D3-brane bubble as it expa…
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is a string-generated gravity theory when approaching the low energy limit. By introducing the higher order curvature terms, this theory is supposed to help to solve the black hole singularity problem. In this work, we investigate the evaporation of the static spherically symmetric neutral AdS black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in various spacetime dimensions with both positive and negative couping constant $α$. By summarizing the asymptotic behavior of the evaporation process, we find the lifetime of the black holes is dimensional dependent. For $α>0$, i…
In a black hole, hair and quantum information retrieval are interrelated phenomena. The existence of any new form of hair necessarily implies the existence of features in the quantum-mechanically evaporated radiation. Classical supertranslation hair can be only distinguished from global diffeomorphisms if we have access to the interior of the black hole. Indirect information on the interior can only be obtained from the features of the quantum evaporation. Supertranslations $(T^-,T^+) \in BMS_{-}\otimes BMS_{+}$ can be used as bookkepers of the probability distributions of the emitted quanta w…
A derivation of the Hawking effect is given which avoids reference to field modes above some cutoff frequency $ω_c\gg M^{-1}$ in the free-fall frame of the black hole. To avoid reference to arbitrarily high frequencies, it is necessary to impose a boundary condition on the quantum field in a timelike region near the horizon, rather than on a (spacelike) Cauchy surface either outside the horizon or at early times before the horizon forms. Due to the nature of the horizon as an infinite redshift surface, the correct boundary condition at late times outside the horizon cannot be deduced, within t…
The unitary evaporation of a black hole (BH) in an initially pure state must lead to the eventual purification of the emitted radiation. It follows that the late radiation has to be entangled with the early radiation and, as a consequence, the entanglement among the Hawking pair partners has to decrease continuously from maximal to vanishing during the BH's life span. Starting from the basic premise that both the horizon radius and the center of mass of a finite-mass BH are fluctuating quantum mechanically, we show how this process is realized. First, it is shown that the horizon fluctuations …
We aim to quantify the distribution of information in the Hawking radiation and inside the black hole in the semiclassical evaporation process. The structure quantum field theory forces to consider a shared information between two different regions of space-time. Using this tool, we show that the entropy of a thermal gas at the Unruh temperature underestimates the actual amount of (shared) information present in a region of the Rindler space. Then, we analyze the mutual information between the black hole and the late time radiation region. We show that in the semiclassical picture it is not po…
Black hole evaporation is studied using wave packets for the modes. These allow for approximate frequency and time resolution. The leading order late time behavior gives the well known Hawking radiation that is independent of how the black hole formed. The focus here is on the higher order terms and the rate at which they damp at late times. Some of these terms carry information about how the black hole formed. A general argument is given which shows that the damping is significantly slower (power law) than what might be naively expected from a stationary phase approximation (exponential). Thi…
Large extra dimensions lower the Planck scale to values soon accessible. The production of TeV mass black holes at the {\sc LHC} is one of the most exciting predictions. However, the final phases of the black hole's evaporation are still unknown and there are strong indications that a black hole remnant can be left. Since a certain fraction of such objects would be electrically charged, we argue that they can be trapped. In this paper, we examine the occurrence of such charged black hole remnants. These trapped remnants are of high interest, as they could be used to closely investigate the eva…
We consider the evolution of primordial black holes formed during the high energy phase of the braneworld scenario. We show that the effect of accretion from the surrounding radiation bath is dominant compared to evaporation for such black holes. This feature lasts till the onset of matter (or black hole) domination of the total energy density which could occur either in the high energy phase or later. We find that the black hole evaporation times could be significantly large even for black holes with small initial mass to survive till several cosmologically interesting eras.
Recent work in the literature has studied the quantum-mechanical decay of a Schwarzschild-like black hole, formed by gravitational collapse, into almost-flat space-time and weak radiation at a very late time. The relevant quantum amplitudes have been evaluated for bosonic and fermionic fields, showing that no information is lost in collapse to a black hole. On the other hand, recent developments in noncommutative geometry have shown that, in general relativity, the effects of noncommutativity can be taken into account by keeping the standard form of the Einstein tensor on the left-hand side of…
In this paper, inspired by the ultraviolet deformation of the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker geometry in loop quantum cosmology, we formulate an infrared-modified cosmological model. We obtain the associated deformed Friedmann and Raychaudhuri equations and we show that the late time cosmic acceleration can be addressed by the infrared corrections. As a particular example, we applied the setup to the case of matter dominated universe. This model has the same number of parameters as $Λ$CDM, but a dynamical dark energy generates in the matter dominated era at the late time. According to o…
Since Hawking's 1974 discovery, we expect that a black hole formed by collapse will emit radiation and eventually disappear. Closely related to the information loss puzzle is the challenge to define an objective notion of physical entropy which increases throughout this process in a way consistent with unitarity. In recent years, this has been addressed with certain notions of coarse grained entropy. We have suggested instead that physical entropy should be identified with matter-gravity entanglement entropy and that this may offer an explanation of entropy increase both for the black hole col…
This paper revisits the conundrum faced when one attempts to understand the dynamics of black hole formation and evaporation without abandoning unitary evolution. Previous efforts to resolve this puzzle assume that information escapes in corrections to the Hawking process, that an arbitrarily large amount of information is transmitted by a planckian energy or contained in a Planck-sized remnant, or that the information is lost to another universe. Each of these possibilities has serious difficulties. This paper considers another alternative: remnants that carry large amounts of information and…
