The low lying spectrum of the massless overlap Dirac operator coupled to abelian fields in three dimensions with three different measures are shown to exhibit two phases: a strong coupling gapped phase and a weak coupling gapless phase. The vanishing of the gap from the strong coupling side with a Maxwell and a conformal measure is governed by a Gaussian exponent. Contrary to this result, the vanishing of the gap from the strong coupling side with a compact Thirring measure is not consistent with a Gaussian exponent. The low lying spectrum with a non-compact Thirring measure does not exhibit a simple non-monotonic behavior as a function of the lattice size on the weak coupling side. Our combined analysis suggests exploring the possibility of a strongly coupled continuum theory starting from a compact lattice Thirring model where a compact U(1) gauge field with a single link action is coupled to even number of flavors of massless overlap Dirac fermions.
There exist chiral gauge models in two dimensions that have massless composite fermions. Two examples are presented and it is suggested that they be accepted as benchmark test-cases for generic proposals of non-perturbatively regulating chiral gauge theories in any dimension. We apply the overlap to the simpler of the two benchmarks and present the results of a numerical simulation of modest size.
In the continuum, the single flavor massless Schwinger model has an exact global axial $U(1)$ symmetry in the sector of perturbative gauge fields. This symmetry is explicitly broken by gauge fields with nonzero topological charge inducing a nonzero expectation value for the bilinear $\barψψ$. We show that a lattice formulation of this model, using the overlap formalism to treat the massless fermions, explicitly exhibits this phenomenon. A Monte Carlo simulation of the complete system yields the correct value of the fermion condensate and shows unambiguously that it originates from the sector o…
A truncation of the overlap (domain wall fermions) is studied and a criterion for reliability of the approximation is obtained by comparison to the exact overlap formula describing massless quarks. We also present a truncated version of regularized, pure gauge, supersymmetric models. The mechanism for generating almost masslessness is shown to be a generalized see-saw which can also be viewed as a version of Froggatt-Nielsen's method for obtaining natural large mass hierarchies. Viewed in this way the mechanism preserving the mass hierarchy naturally avoids preserving even approximately axial …
In odd dimensions the lattice overlap formalism is simpler than in even dimensions. Masslessness of fermions can still be preserved without fine tuning and gauge invariance without gauge averaging can be maintained, although, sometimes, only at the expense of parity invariance. When parity invariance is enforced invariance under small gauge transformations can be maintained and continuum global gauge anomalies are reproduced.
The application of Random Matrix Theory to the Dirac operator of QCD yields predictions for the probability distributions of the lowest eigenvalues. We measured Dirac operator spectra using massless overlap fermions in quenched QCD at topological charge ν= 0, +- 1 and +- 2, and found agreement with those predictions - at least for the first non-zero eigenvalue - if the volume exceeds about (1.2 fm)^4.
The massless vector Schwinger model with $N_f=1,2,3,4$ number of flavors is studied on the lattice using the overlap formalism. A full Monte Carlo simulation yields values for the bilinear fermion condensate that are in agreement with the exact solution of the continuum Schwinger model with an added Thirring interaction.
In the previous paper we developed a strong-coupling expansion for the lattice QCD with the overlap fermions and showed that Lüsher's "extended" chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in some parameter region of the overlap fermions. In this paper, we derive a low-energy effective action of hadrons and show that there exist quasi-Nambu-Goldstone bosons which are identified as the pions. The pion field is a {\em nonlocal} composite field of quark and anti-quark even at the strong-coupling limit because of the nonlocality of the overlap fermion formalism and Lüsher's chiral symmetry. The pions …
We determine the phase diagram of the Abelian-Higgs model in one spatial dimension and time (1+1D) on a lattice. We identify a line of first order phase transitions separating the Higgs region from the confined one. This line terminates in a quantum critical point above which the two regions are connected by a smooth crossover. We analyze the critical point and find compelling evidences for its description as the product of two non-interacting systems, a massless free fermion and a massless free boson. However, we find also some surprizing results that cannot be explained by our simple picture…
In this work we investigate the infrared behaviour of a Yang-Mills theory coupled to a massless fermion in the adjoint representation of the gauge group SU(2). This model has many interesting properties, corresponding to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ Super-Yang-Mills theory without scalars and in the recent years there has been an increasing interest toward understanding whether confinement and fermion condensation occur at low energy. We simulate the theory on the lattice close to the massless limit using the overlap discretization of the fermion action, allowing a precise and clean study of the chiral…
We study a three-dimensional non-compact QED with a single two-component massless fermion and two infinitely massive regulator fermions of half the charge using lattice overlap formalism. The parity anomaly is expected to cancel exactly between the massless and regulator fermions in the continuum, but this cancellation is inexact on lattice akin to lattice chiral gauge theories. We show non-perturbatively that parity-breaking terms vanish in the continuum limit at any finite volume. We present numerical evidences that the resulting parity-invariant theory spontaneously breaks parity in the inf…
We briefly review the overlap formalism for chiral gauge theories, the overlap Dirac operator for massless fermions and its connection to domain wall fermions. We describe properties of the overlap Dirac operator, and methods to implement it numerically. Finally, we give some examples of quenched calculations of chiral symmetry breaking and topology with overlap fermions.
We perform perturbative computations in a lattice gauge theory with a conformal measure that is quadratic in a non-compact abelian gauge field and is nonlocal, as inspired by the induced gauge action in massless QED$_3$. In a previous work, we showed that coupling fermion sources to the gauge model led to nontrivial conformal data in the correlation functions of fermion bilinears that are functions of charge $q$ of the fermion. In this paper, we compute such gauge invariant fermionic observables to order $q^2$ in lattice perturbation theory with the same conformal measure. We reproduce the exp…
In this paper we show how to construct a Dirac operator on a lattice in complete analogy with the continuum. In fact we consider a more general problem, that is, the Dirac operator over an abelian finite group (for which a lattice is a particular example). Our results appear to be in direct connexion with the so called fermion doubling problem. In order to find this Dirac operator we need to introduce an algebraic structure (that generalizes the Clifford algebras) where we have quantities that work as square-root of the translation operator. Quantities like these square-roots have been used re…
We discuss the weak coupling expansion of massless QCD with the Dirac operator which is derived by Neuberger based on the overlap formalism and satisfies the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. The axial U(1) anomaly associated to the chiral transformation proposed by Luscher is calculated as an application and is shown to have the correct form of the topological charge density for perturbative backgrounds. The coefficient of the anomaly is evaluated as a winding number related to a certain five-dimensional fermion propagator.
The Overlap-Dirac operator provides a lattice regularization of massless vector gauge theories with an exact chiral symmetry. Practical implementations of this operator and recent results in quenched QCD using this Overlap-Dirac operator are reviewed.
A certain U(1) model in 2 dimensions, describing four right handed unit charged Weyl fermions interacting with one doubly charged left handed Weyl fermion, is exactly soluble and has massless Majorana-Weyl composites. Instanton induced fermion number violation is essential for 't Hooft anomaly consistency. The associated 't Hooft vertex can be analytically computed in the continuum, including finite size corrections. This number is reproduced in a dynamical simulation employing the overlap.
We study the phase structure of the 3D nonlocal compact U(1) lattice gauge theory coupled with a Higgs field by means of Monte-Carlo simulations. The nonlocal interactions among gauge variables are along the temporal direction and mimic the effect of local coupling to massless particles. We found that in contrast to the 3D local abelian Higgs model which has only one phase, the present model exhibits the confinement, Higgs, and Coulomb phases separated by three second-order transition lines emanating from a triple point. This result is quite important for studies on electron fractionalization …
In the previous paper we developed a strong-coupling expansion for the lattice QCD with the overlap fermions and showed that Lüsher's "extended" chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in some parameter region of the overlap fermions. In this paper, we obtain a low-energy effective action and show that there exist quasi-Nambu-Goldsone bosons which are identified as the pions. The pion field is a {\em nonlocal} composite field of quark and anti-quark even at the strong-coupling limit because of the nonlocality of the overlap fermion formalism and Lüsher's chiral symmetry. The pions become massl…
We construct an $O(a^2)$-improved overlap-Dirac operator by designing an improved overlap kernel, based on the Symanzik improvement program. Field rotation terms are also identified to improve off-shell amplitudes for both massless and massive fermions. We check the free dispersion relation and propagator, and show that improved results become to close to the continuum ones at low momentum region. We test the effect of improvement on the full-QCD gauge configuration and find that the relativistic dispersion relation is satisfied within a few percent error up to $m_qa \approx 0.5$.
In three dimensions, the effective action for the gauge field induced by integrating out a massless Dirac fermion is known to give either a parity-invariant or a parity-violating result, depending on the regularization scheme. We construct a lattice formulation of the massless Dirac fermion using the overlap formalism. We show that the result is parity invariant in contrast to the formulation using Wilson fermions in the massless limit. This facilitates a non-perturbative study of three-dimensional massless Dirac fermions interacting with a gauge field in a parity invariant setting with no nee…
In this preliminary work, I provide the outline of an argument (leaving the full proof to a future publication) that there exists a valid renormalization group blocking transformation which converts the continuum fermion action into a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice action. I construct the blocking for the massless overlap operator as a specific example, indicating how other Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operators can be derived in a similar fashion. This renormalization group transformation modifies the gauge action and adds a number of irrelevant terms to the lattice action. The procedure is not val…
We present numerical evidences using overlap fermions for a scale-invariant behavior of parity-invariant three-dimensional QED with two flavors of massless two-component fermions. Using finite-size scaling of the low-lying eigenvalues of the massless anti-Hermitian overlap Dirac operator, we rule out the presence of bilinear condensate and estimate the mass anomalous dimension. The eigenvectors associated with these low-lying eigenvalues suggest critical behavior in the sense of a metal-insulator transition. We show that there is no mass gap in the scalar and vector correlators in the infinite…
We consider overlap-Dirac fermions at non-zero bare coupling and for a small hopping parameter, or, equivalently, large $|M|$ with $M$ the domain-wall height. We prove the existence of a phase at large positive $M$ where the abelian axial group $U_A(1)$ is a symmetry, and the corresponding pseudo-scalar is an exact Goldstone boson. We also provide a conjecture for the phase diagram of asymptotically free gauge theories with overlap-Dirac fermions. In particular, we suggest that, for large gauge coupling, the massive-fermion phase at negative $M$ possibly extends to all $M<4$.
