Quasars behind the Galactic plane (GPQs) are important astrometric references and useful probes of Milky Way gas. However, the search for GPQs is difficult due to large extinctions and high source densities in the Galactic plane. Existing selection methods for quasars developed using high Galactic latitude (high-$b$) data cannot be applied to the Galactic plane directly because the photometric data obtained from high-$b$ regions and the Galactic plane follow different probability distributions. To alleviate this dataset shift problem for quasar candidate selection, we adopt a Transfer Learning Framework at both data and algorithm levels. At the data level, to make a training set in which dataset shift is modeled, we synthesize quasars and galaxies behind the Galactic plane based on SDSS sources and Galactic dust map. At the algorithm level, to reduce the effect of class imbalance, we transform the three-class classification problem for stars, galaxies, and quasars to two binary classification tasks. We apply XGBoost algorithm on Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) and AllWISE photometry for classification, and additional cut on Gaia proper motion to remove stellar contaminants. We obtain a reliable GPQ candidate catalog with 160,946 sources located at $|b|\leq 20^{\circ}$ in PS1-AllWISE footprint. Photometric redshifts of GPQ candidates achieved with XGBoost regression algorithm show that our selection method can identify quasars in a wide redshift range ($0<z\lesssim5$). This study extends the systematic searches for quasars to the dense stellar fields and shows the feasibility of using astronomical knowledge to improve data mining under complex conditions in the Big Data era.
Quasi--stellar objects (quasars) located behind nearby galaxies provide an excellent absolute reference system for astrometric studies, but they are difficult to identify because of fore- and background contamination. Deep wide--field, high angular resolution surveys spanning the entire area of nearby galaxies are needed to obtain a complete census of such quasars. We embarked on a program to expand the quasar reference system behind the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge, and the Magellanic Stream, connecting the Clouds with the Milky Way. Hundreds of quasar candidat…

Quasars behind the Galactic plane (GPQs) are important astrometric references and valuable probes of Galactic gas, yet the search for GPQs is difficult due to severe extinction and source crowding in the Galactic plane. In this paper, we present a sample of 204 spectroscopically confirmed GPQs at |b|<20°, 191 of which are new discoveries. This GPQ sample covers a wide redshift range from 0.069 to 4.487. For the subset of 230 observed GPQ candidates, the lower limit of the purity of quasars is 85.2%, and the lower limit of the fraction of stellar contaminants is 6.1%. Using a multicomponent spe…
We report the discovery of 11 newly found quasars behind the stellar disks of the spiral galaxies M31 and M33 in the fields covered by the Local Group Galaxy Survey. Their redshifts range from 0.37 to 2.15. Most are X-ray, UV, and IR sources. We also report the discovery of 5 normal background galaxies. Most of these objects were observed owing to their anomalous colors, as part of a program (reported elsewhere) to confirm spectroscopically candidate red supergiant plus B star binaries; others were discovered as part of our identification of early-type massive stars based upon their optical co…

We present a sample of quasars discovered in the area of Galactic Anti-Center (GAC) of $150^{\circ} \leq l \leq 210^{\circ}$ and $|b| \leq 30^{\circ}$, based on the LAMOST Data Release 3 (DR3). The sample contains 151 spectroscopically confirmed quasars. Among them 80 are newly discovered with the LAMOST. All those quasars are very bright, with $i$ magnitudes peaking around 17.5\, mag. All the newly quasars are discovered serendipitously, targeted originally with the LAMOST as stars of bluer colours, except for a few targeted as variable, young stellar object candidates. This bright quasar sam…
The properties of circum-galactic gas in the halo of quasar host galaxies are investigated analyzing Mg II 2800 and C IV 1540 absorption-line systems along the line of sight close to quasars. We used optical spectroscopy of closely aligned pairs of quasars (projected distance $\leq$ 200 kpc, but at very different redshift) obtained at the VLT and Gran Telescopio Canarias to investigate the distribution of the absorbing gas for a sample of quasars at z$\sim$1. Absorption systems of EW $\geq$ 0.3 $\rmÅ$ associated with the foreground quasars are revealed up to 200 kpc from the centre of the host…
The cosmic chemical enrichment as measured from damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs) will be underestimated if dusty and metal-rich absorbers have evaded identification. Here we report the discovery and present the spectroscopic observations of a quasar, KV-RQ\,1500-0031, at $z=2.520$ reddened by a likely dusty DLA at $z=2.428$ and a strong MgII absorber at $z=1.603$. This quasar was identified as part of the KiDS-VIKING Red Quasar (KV-RQ) survey, specifically aimed at targeting dusty absorbers which may cause the background quasars to escape the optical selection of e.g. the SDSS quasar survey. For …
We have designed the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS) to provide a highly complete census of unobscured UV-bright quasars during the cosmic noon, $z=2.8-5.0$. Here we report the discovery of 70 new quasars in the ELQS South Galactic Cap (ELQS-S) quasar sample, doubling the number of known extremely luminous quasars in $4,237.3\,\rm{deg}^2$ of the SDSS footprint. These observations conclude the ELQS and we present the properties of the full ELQS quasar catalog, containing 407 quasars over $11,838.5\,\rm{deg}^2$. Our novel ELQS quasar selection strategy resulted in unprecedented completen…
Quasar outflows might either quench (negative) or enhance (positive feedback) star formation in galaxies located in the quasar environment. The possible outcome depends on 4 parameters: the quasar ($σ$) and satellite ($σ_*$) halo velocity dispersion, their relative distance, $d$, and satellite disk radius, $r_d$. We find that: (i) small satellites with $σ_* < 164\ σ_{200}^{2/3}\, \rm km\ s^{-1}$ have their star formation quenched; (ii) in larger satellites, star formation, and hence UV/FIR luminosity, is instead boosted by $>80$\% in a burst with a typical duration of $5-10$ Myr, if the follow…
We present the North Galactic Cap sample of the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS-N), which targets quasars with $M_{1450}<-27$ at $2.8 \leq z < 5$ in an area of $\sim7600\,\rm{deg}^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) footprint with $90\text{\textdegree}<\rm{RA}<270\text{\textdegree}$. Based on a near-infrared/infrared \textit{JKW2} color cut, the ELQS selection efficiently uses random forest methods to classify quasars and to estimate photometric redshifts; this scheme overcomes some of the difficulties of pure optical quasar selection at $z\approx3$. As a result, we retain a compl…
A handful of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have shown strong spectral variations in the optical band between epochs that are years apart. The appearance or disappearance of broad emission lines in their spectra completely changes their classification. Since their nucleus orientation cannot change in such short timescales another physical interpretation has to be found. Several scenarios are competing to explain their changing-look nature and, for the first time, we conduct polarized radiative transfer Monte Carlo simulations for all the models. We demonstrate that all interpretations have disti…
In a popular scenario for the coevolution of massive black holes and galaxies, major mergers of gas-rich galaxies fuel vigorous star formation and obscured (type 2) quasar activity until energy feedback from the active galactic nucleus clears away the gas and dust to reveal an unobscured (type 1) quasar. Under this scenario, the precursor type 2 quasars should be more gas-rich than their type 1 counterparts, and both types of quasars are expected to be gas-deficient relative to normal, star-forming galaxies of similar stellar mass. We test this evolutionary hypothesis by investigating the infr…
We performed a detailed study of the extended cool gas, traced by MgII absorption [$W_r(2796)\geq0.3$~Å], surrounding 14 narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 0.12<z<0.22 using background quasar sight-lines. The background quasars probe the AGNs at projected distances of $60\leq D\leq265$~kpc. We find that, between $100\leq D\leq200$~kpc, AGNs appear to have lower MgII gas covering fractions (0.09$^{+0.18}_{-0.08}$) than quasars (0.47$^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$) and possibly lower than in active field galaxies (0.25$^{+0.11}_{-0.09}$). We do not find a statistically significant azimuthal angle d…
I describe two novel techniques originally devised to select strongly lensed quasar candidates in wide-field surveys. The first relies on outlier selection in optical and mid-infrared magnitude space; the second combines mid-infrared colour selection with GAIA spatial resolution, to identify multiplets of objects with quasar-like colours. Both methods have already been applied successfully to the SDSS, ATLAS and DES footprints: besides recovering known lenses from previous searches, they have led to new discoveries, including quadruply lensed quasars, which are rare within the rare-object clas…
We present preliminary results of the CIDA Equatorial Variability Survey (CEVS), looking for quasar (hereafter QSO) candidates near the Galactic plane. The CEVS contains photometric data from extended and adjacent regions of the Milky Way disk ($\sim$ 500 sq. deg.). In this work 2.5 square degrees with moderately high temporal sampling in the CEVS were analyzed. The selection of QSO candidates was based on the study of intrinsic optical photometric variability of 14,719 light curves. We studied samples defined by cuts in the variability index (Vindex $>$ 66.5), periodicity index (Q $>$ 2), and…
The first part of this article is a historical and physical introduction to quasars and their close cousins, called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In the second part, I argue that our progress in understanding them has been unsatisfactory and in fact somewhat illusory since their discovery fifty years ago, and that much of the reason is a pervasive lack of critical thinking in the research community. It would be very surprising if other fields do not suffer similar failings.
Fermi bubbles, the recently observed giant (~10 kpc high) gamma-ray emitting lobes on either side of our Galaxy (Su et al. 2010), appear morphologically connected to the Galactic center, and thus offer a chance to test several models of supermassive black hole (SMBH) evolution, feedback and relation with their host galaxies. We use a physical feedback model (King 2003, 2010) and novel numerical techniques (Nayakshin et al. 2009) to simulate a short burst of activity in Sgr A*, the central SMBH of the Milky Way, ~6 Myr ago, temporally coincident with a star formation event in the central parsec…
The physical properties of galactic winds are of paramount importance for our understanding of galaxy formation. Fortunately, they can be constrained using background quasars passing near star-forming galaxies (SFGs). From the 14 quasar$-$galaxy pairs in our VLT/SINFONI Mgii Program for Line Emitters (SIMPLE) sample, we reobserved the 10 brightest galaxies in H$_α$ with the VLT/SINFONI with 0.7" seeing and the corresponding quasar with the VLT/UVES spectrograph. Applying geometrical arguments to these ten pairs, we find that four are likely probing galactic outflows, three are likely probing e…
We propose an observational test for gravitationally recoiling supermassive black holes (BHs) in active galactic nuclei, based on a correlation between the velocities of BHs relative to their host galaxies, |Δv|, and their obscuring dust column densities, Σ_{dust} (both measured along the line of sight). We use toy models for the distribution of recoil velocities, BH trajectories, and the geometry of obscuring dust tori in galactic centres, to simulate 2.5x10^5 random observations of recoiling quasars. BHs with recoil velocities comparable to the escape velocity from the galactic centre remain…
We present 1-7 GHz high-resolution radio imaging (VLA and e-MERLIN) and spatially-resolved ionized gas kinematics for ten z<0.2 type~2 `obscured' quasars (log [L(AGN)/(erg/s)]>~45) with moderate radio luminosities (log [L(1.4GHz)/(W/Hz)]=23.3-24.4). These targets were selected to have known ionized outflows based on broad [OIII] emission-line components (FWHM~800-1800 km/s). Although `radio-quiet' and not `radio AGN' by many traditional criteria, we show that for nine of the targets, star formation likely accounts for <~10 per cent of the radio emission. We find that ~80-90 per cent of these n…
We use 666 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the 2Qz redshift survey to map the Galactic halo in four dimensions (position, distance and velocity). We find that the halo extends to at least 100 kpc in Galactocentric distance, and obeys a single power-law density profile of index ~-2.5 in two different directions separated by 150 degrees on the sky. This suggests that the halo is spherical. Our map shows no large kinematically coherent structures (streams, clouds or plumes) and appears homogeneous. However, we find that at least 20% of the stars in the halo reside in substructures and tha…
We investigate the extent and the properties of the MgII cool, low-density absorbing gas located in the halo and in the circum-galactic environment of quasars, using a sample of 31 projected quasar pairs with impact parameter pd<200kpc in the redshift range 0.5<z<1.6. In the transverse direction, we detect 18 MgII absorbers associated with the foreground quasars, while no absorption system originated by the gas surrounding the quasar itself is found along the line-of-sight. This suggests that the quasar emission induces an anisotropy in the absorbing gas distribution. Our observations indicate…
Emission from metal resonant lines has recently emerged as a potentially powerful probe of the structure of galactic winds at low and high redshift. In this work, we present only the second example of spatially resolved observations of NaI D emission from a galactic wind in a nearby galaxy (and the first 3D observations at any redshift). F05189-2524, a nearby (z=0.043) ultra luminous infrared galaxy powered by a quasar, was observed with the integral field unit on the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini North. NaI D absorption in the system traces dusty filaments on the near side…
We present observations of ionized gas outflows in eleven z$ =1.39-2.59$ radio-loud quasar host galaxies. Data was taken with the integral field spectrograph (IFS) OSIRIS and the adaptive optics system at the W.M. Keck Observatory targeting nebular emission lines (H$β$, [OIII], H$α$, [NII] and [SII]) redshifted into the near-infrared (1-2.4 \micron). Outflows with velocities of 500 - 1700 km\,s$^{-1}$ are detected in 10 systems on scales ranging from $<1$ kpc to 10 kpc with outflow rates from 8-2400 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. For five sources, the outflow momentum rates are 4-80 times $L_{AGN}$/c, co…
We present results from our on-going MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey, which consists of 22 quasar lines-of-sight, each observed with the integral field unit (IFU) MUSE and the UVES spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescopes (VLT). The goals of this survey are to study the properties of the circum-galactic medium around $z\sim1$ star-forming galaxies. The absorption-line selected survey consists of 79 strong \MgII\ absorbers (with rest-frame equivalent width (REW)$\gtrsim$0.3Å) and, currently, 86 associated galaxies within 100 projected~kpc of the quasar with stellar masses ($M_\sta…
Red clump stars are commonly used to map the reddening and morphology of the inner regions of the Milky Way. We use the new photometric catalogues of the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey to achieve twice the spatial resolution of previous reddening maps for Galactic longitudes $-10^{\circ}<l<10^{\circ}$ and latitudes $-1.5^{\circ}<b<1.5^{\circ}$. We use these de-reddened catalogues to construct the $K_{s}$ luminosity function around the red clump in the Galactic plane. We show that the secondary peak (fainter than the red clump) detected in these regions does not correspond to the bulg…
The Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) can be probed through the analysis of absorbing systems in the line-of-sight to bright background quasars. We present measurements of the metallicity of a new sample of 15 sub-damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (sub-DLAs, defined as absorbers with 19.0 < log N(H I) < 20.3) with redshift 0.584 < $\rm z_{abs}$ < 3.104 from the ESO Ultra-Violet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) Advanced Data Products Quasar Sample (EUADP). We combine these results with other measurements from the literature to produce a compilation of metallicity measurements for 92 sub-DLAs as well as a sample…
Reverberation mapping (RM) is a widely-used method for probing the physics of broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). There are increasing preliminary evidences that the RM behaviors of broad emission lines are influenced by BLR densities, however, the influences have not been investigated systematically from theoretical perspective. In the present paper, we adopt locally optimally emitting cloud model and use CLOUDY to obtain the one-dimensional transfer functions of the prominent UV and optical emission lines for different BLR densities. We find that the influences of BLR…
We present high angular resolution multi-wavelength data of the 3C 298 radio-loud quasar host galaxy (z=1.439) taken using the W.M. Keck Observatory OSIRIS integral field spectrograph with adaptive optics, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3, and the Very Large Array (VLA). Extended emission is detected in the rest-frame optical nebular emission lines H$β$, [OIII], H$α$, [NII], and [SII], as well as molecular lines CO (J=3-2) and (J=5-4). Along the path of 3C 298's relativistic jets we detect conical outflows of ionized gas with velocities up …
We show that a combination of infrared photometry from WISE and 2MASS surveys can yield highly pure samples of M giant stars. We take advantage of the new WISE$\cap$2MASS M giant selection to trace the Sagittarius trailing tail behind the Galactic disk in the direction of the anti-centre. The M giant candidates selected via broad-band photometry are confirmed spectroscopically using AAOmega on the AAT in 3 fields around the extremity of the Sgr trailing tail in the Southern Galactic hemisphere. We demonstrate that at the Sgr longitude $\tilde Λ_{\odot} = 204^{\circ}$, the line-of-sight velocit…
We investigate the properties of the circumgalactic gas in the halo of quasar host galaxies from CIV absorption line systems. Optical spectroscopy of closely aligned pairs of quasars (projected distance \leq 200 kpc) obtained at the Gran Telescopio Canarias is used to investigate the distribution of the absorbing gas for a sample of 18 quasars at z \sim 2. We found that the detected absorption systems of EW \geq 0.3Ang associated with the foreground QSO are revealed up to 200 kpc from the center of the host galaxy. The structure of the absorbing gas is rather patchy with a covering fraction of…
The South Galactic Cap $u$-band Sky Survey (SCUSS) provides a deep $u$-band imaging of about 5000 deg$^2$ in south Galactic cap. It is about 1.5 mag deeper than the SDSS $u$-band. In this paper we evaluate the capability of quasar selection using both SCUSS and SDSS data, based on considerations of the deep SCUSS $u$-band imaging and two-epoch $u$-band variability. We find that the combination of the SCUSS $u$-band and the SDSS $griz$ band allows us to select more faint quasars and more quasars at redshift around 2.2 than the selection only with the SDSS $ugriz$ data. Quasars have significant …
We present far-IR photometry and infrared spectrum of the z=3.9114 quasar/starburst composite system APM 08279+5255 obtained using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)/HAWC+ and the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). We decompose the IR-to-radio spectral energy distribution (SED), sampled in 51 bands, using (i) a model comprised of two-temperature modified blackbodies (MBB) and radio power-laws and (ii) a semi-analytic model, which also accounts for emission from a clumpy torus. The latter is more realistic but requires a well-sampled SED, as possible …
We draw a comparison between AGN and Galactic black hole binaries using a uniform description of spectral energy distribution of these two classes of accreting X-ray sources. We parametrize spectra of GBHs with an alpha_GBH parameter which we define as a slope of a nominal power law function between 3 and 20 keV. We show that this parameter can be treated as an equivalent of the X-ray loudness, alpha_OX, used to describe AGN spectra. We do not find linear correlation between the alpha_GBH and disc flux (similar to that between alpha_OX and optical/UV luminosity found in AGN). Instead, we show …

Vista Variables in The Via Lactea (VVV) is an ESO variability survey that is performing observations in near infrared bands (ZYJHKs) towards the Galactic bulge and part of the disk with the completeness limits at least 3 mag deeper than 2MASS. In the present work, we searched in the VVV survey data for background galaxies near the Galactic plane using ZYJHKs photometry that covers 1.636 square degrees. We identified 204 new galaxy candidates by analyzing colors, sizes, and visual inspection of multi-band (ZYJHKs) images. The galaxy candidates colors were also compared with the predicted ones b…
Every quasar (QSO) spectrum contains absorption-line signatures from the interstellar medium, disk-halo interface, and circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the Milky Way (MW). We analyze Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectra of 132 QSOs to study the significance and origin of SiIV absorption at $|v_{\rm LSR}|\leq100$ km/s in the Galactic halo. The gas in the north predominantly falls in at $-50\lesssim v_{\rm LSR}\lesssim 0$ km/s, whereas in the south, no such pattern is observed. The SiIV column density has an average and a standard deviation of $\langle N_{\rm SiIV}\rang…

We report the identification of blazar candidates behind the Magellanic Clouds. The objects were selected from the Magellanic Quasars Survey (MQS), which targeted the entire Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 70\% of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Among the 758 MQS quasars and 898 of unidentified (featureless spectra) objects, we identified a sample of 44 blazar candidates, including 27 flat spectrum radio quasars and 17 BL Lacertae objects, respectively. All the blazar candidates from our sample were identified with respect to their radio, optical, and mid-infrared properties. The newly sele…
We study the internal structure of the Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM), using 29 spectra of 13 gravitationally lensed quasars with image separation angles of a few arcseconds, which correspond to 100 pc to 10 kpc in physical distances. After separating metal absorption lines detected in the spectra into high-ions with ionization parameter (IP) $>$ 40 eV and low-ions with IP $<$ 20 eV, we find that i) the fraction of absorption lines that are detected in only one of the lensed images is larger for low-ions ($\sim$16%) than high-ions ($\sim$2%), ii) the fractional difference of equivalent widths ($…
Following the discovery of SAGE0536AGN ($z \sim$ 0.14), with the strongest 10-$μ$m silicate emission ever observed for an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), we discovered SAGE0534AGN ($z \sim$ 1.01), a similar AGN but with less extreme silicate emission. Both were originally mistaken as evolved stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Lack of far-infrared emission, and therefore star-formation, implies we are seeing the central engine of the AGN without contribution from the host galaxy. They could be a key link in galaxy evolution. We used a dimensionality reduction algorithm, t-SNE (t-distributed Stochas…
We report an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) with extremely high equivalent width (EW), EW(LyA+NV,rest)>921 AA in the rest-frame, at z~2.24 in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) as a representative case of the high EW AGN population. The continuum level is a non-detection in the HETDEX spectrum, thus the measured EW is a lower limit. The source is detected with significant emission lines (>7sigma) at LyA+NV, CIV, and moderate emission line (~4sigma) at HeII within the wavelength coverage of HETDEX (3500 AA - 5500 AA). The r-band magnitude is 24.57 from the Hyper Su…
