Predicting the evolution of expanding population is critical to control biological threats such as invasive species and virus explosion. In this paper, we consider a two species chemotaxis system of parabolic-parabolic-elliptic type with Lotka-Volterra type competition terms and a free boundary. Such a model with a free boundary describes the spreading of new or invasive species subject to the influence of some chemical substances in an environment with a free boundary representing the spreading front. We first find conditions on the parameters which guarantee the global existence and boundedness of classical solutions with nonnegative initial functions. Next, we investigate vanishing-spreading dichotomy scenarios for positive solutions. It is shown that the vanishing-spreading dichotomy in the generalized sense always occurs; that the vanishing spreading dichotomy in the strong sense occurs when the competition between two species is weak-weak competition; and that the vanishing spreading dichotomy in the weak sense occurs when the competition between two species is weak-strong competition.
The current paper is concerned with the spreading speeds of the following parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis model with logistic source on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, \begin{equation} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla\cdot ( u\nabla v) + u(a-bu),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^{N},\cr {v_t}=Δv -λv+μu,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^{N}. \end{cases}(1) \end{equation} where $χ, \ a,\ b,\ λ,\ μ$ are positive constants. Assume $b>\frac{Nμχ}{4}$. Among others, it is proved that $2\sqrt{a}$ is the spreading speed of the global classical solutions of (1) with nonempty compactly supported initial functions, that is, $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}\sup…
In this paper, we examine the long-time dynamics of an epidemic model whose diffusion and reaction terms involve nonlocal effects described by suitable convolution operators. The spreading front of the disease is represented by the free boundaries in the model. We show that the model is well-posed, its long-time dynamical behaviour is characterised by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, and we also obtain sharp criteria to determine the dichotomy. Some of the nonlocal effects in the model pose extra difficulties in the mathematical treatment, which are dealt with by introducing new approaches. The…
The current paper is to investigate the numerical approximation of logistic type chemotaxis models in one space dimension with a free boundary. Such a model with a free boundary describes the spreading of a new or invasive species subject to the influence of some chemical substances in an environment with a free boundary representing the spreading front (see Bao and Shen [1], [2]). The main challenges in the numerical studies lie in tracking the moving free boundary and the nonlinear terms from chemical. To overcome them, a front fixing framework coupled with finite difference method is introd…
We study two types of divergence-free fluid flows on unbounded domains in two and three dimensions -- hyperbolic and shear flows -- and their influence on chemotaxis and combustion. We show that fast spreading by these flows, when they are strong enough, can suppress growth of solutions to PDE modeling these phenomena. This includes prevention of singularity formation and global regularity of solutions to advective Patlak-Keller-Segel equations on ${\mathbb R}^2$ and ${\mathbb R}^3$, confirming numerical observations in [Khan, Johnson,Cartee and Yao, Global regularity of chemotaxis equations w…
The current paper is concerned with the spatial spreading speed and minimal wave speed of the following Keller-Segel chemoattraction system, \begin{equation}\label{abstract-eq1} \begin{cases} u_t=u_{xx}-χ(uv_x)_x +u(a-bu),\quad x\in\R\cr 0=v_{xx}- λv+μu,\quad x\in\R, \end{cases} \end{equation} where $χ$, $a$, $b$, $λ$, and $μ$ are positive constants. Assume $b>χμ$. Then if in addition, $\big(1+\frac{1}{2}\frac{(\sqrt{a}-\sqrtλ)_+}{(\sqrt{a}+\sqrt{\la})}\big)χμ{ \leq} b$ holds, it is proved that $c_0^*=2\sqrt a$ is the spreading speed of the solutions of \eqref{abstract-eq1} with nonnegative co…
The current series of three papers is concerned with the asymptotic dynamics in the following chemotaxis model $$\partial_tu=Δu-χ\nabla(u\nabla v)+u(a(x,t)-ub(x,t))\ ,\ 0=Δv-λv+μu \ \ (1)$$where $χ, λ, μ$ are positive constants, $a(x,t)$ and $b(x,t)$ are positive and bounded. In the first of the series, we investigate the persistence and asymptotic spreading. Under some explicit condition on the parameters, we show that (1) has a unique nonnegative time global classical solution $(u(x,t;t_0,u_0),v(x,t;t_0,u_0))$ with $u(x,t_0;t_0,u_0)=u_0(x)$ for every $t_0\in R$ and every $u_0\in C^{b}_{\rm u…
In Cao, Du, Li and Li [8], a nonlocal diffusion model with free boundaries extending the local diffusion model of Du and Lin [12] was introduced and studied. For Fisher-KPP type nonlinearities, its long-time dynamical behaviour is shown to follow a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. However, when spreading happens, the question of spreading speed was left open in [8]. In this paper we obtain a rather complete answer to this question. We find a condition on the kernel function such that spreading grows linearly in time exactly when this condition holds, which is achieved by completely solving the a…
We consider the following chemotaxis systems $$\begin{cases}u_t=Δu-χ_1\nabla(u\nabla v_1)+χ_2\nabla(u\nabla v_2)+u(a-bu),\ \ x\in\mathbb R^N,t>0,\\0=(Δ-λ_1I)v_1+μ_1u,\ \ x\in\mathbb R^N,t>0,\\0=(Δ-λ_2I)v_2+μ_2u,\ \ \text{in}\ x\in\mathbb R^N,\ t>0,\\u(\cdot,0)=u_0,\ \ x\in\mathbb R^N,\end{cases}$$where $χ_i,\ λ_i,\ μ_i,\ i=1,2$ and $a,\ b$ are positive constant real numbers and $N$ is a positive integer. Under some conditions on the parameters, we prove the global existence and boundedness of classical solutions $(u(x,t;u_0),v_1(x,t;u_0),v_2(x,t;u_0))$ for nonnegative, bounded, and uniformly c…
This is part II of our study on the free boundary problems with nonlocal and local diffusions. In part I, we obtained the existence, uniqueness, regularity and estimates of global solution. In part II here, we show a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, and provide the criteria of spreading and vanishing, as well as the long time behavior of solution when spreading happens.
We study a class of free boundary problems of ecological models with nonlocal and local diffusions, which are natural extensions of free boundary problems of reaction diffusion systems in there local diffusions are used to describe the population dispersal, with the free boundary representing the spreading front of the species. We prove that such kind of nonlocal and local diffusion problems has a unique global solution, and then show that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds. Moreover, criteria of spreading and vanishing, and long time behavior of solution when spreading happens are establis…
We aim to classify the long-time behavior of the solution to a free boundary problem with monostable reaction term in space-time periodic media. Such a model may be used to describe the spreading of a new or invasive species, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. In time-periodic and space homogeneous environment, as well as in space-periodic and time autonomous environment, such a problem has been studied recently in \cite{dgp, dl}. In both cases, a spreading-vanishing dichotomy has been established, and when spreading happens, the asymptotic spreading speed is proved to ex…
This paper is concerned with a diffusive Lotka-Volterra type competition system with a free boundary in one space dimension. Such a system may be used to describe the invasion of a new species into the habitat of a native competitor. We show that the longtime dynamical behavior of the system is determined by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, and provide sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing of the invasive species. Moreover, we determine the asymptotic spreading speed of the invasive species when its spreading is successful, which involves two systems of traveling wave type equations, and …
Incorporating free boundary into time-delayed reaction-diffusion equations yields a compatible condition that guarantees the well-posedness of the initial value problem. With the KPP type nonlinearity we then establish a vanishing-spreading dichotomy result. Further, when the spreading happens, we show that the spreading speed and spreading profile are nonlinearly determined by a delay-induced nonlocal semi-wave problem. It turns out that time delay slows down the spreading speed.
In this paper we study a free boundary problem for a ratio-dependent predator-prey system in one space dimension, with the free boundary only caused by the prey. The long time behaviors of solution are discussed. Then we establish a spreading-vanishing dichotomy and the criteria for spreading and vanishing. Finally, when spreading occurs, an accurate limit of the asymptotic speed of h(t) is provided.
In this series of papers, we investigate the spreading and vanishing dynamics of time almost periodic diffusive KPP equations with free boundaries. Such equations are used to characterize the spreading of a new species in time almost periodic environments with free boundaries representing the spreading fronts. In the first part of the series, we showed that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy occurs for such free boundary problems (see [16]). In this second part of the series, we investigate the spreading speeds of such free boundary problems in the case that the spreading occurs. We first prove t…
This short paper concerns a diffusive logistic equation with the heterogeneous environment and a free boundary, which is formulated to study the spread of an invasive species, where the free boundary represents the expanding front. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is derived, namely the species either successfully spreads to the right-half-space as time $t\to\infty$ and survives (persists) in the new environment, or it fails to establish and will extinct in the long run. The sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing is also obtained. When spreading happens, we estimate the asymptotic spreading…
In this paper we study a ratio-dependent predator-prey model with a free boundary causing by both prey and predator over a one dimensional habitat. We study the long time behaviors of the two species and prove a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely, as t goes to infinity, both prey and predator successfully spread to the whole space and survive in the new environment, or they spread within a bounded area and die out eventually. Then the criteria governing spreading and vanishing are obtained. Finally, when spreading occurs, we provide some estimates to the asymptotic spreading speed of h(t).
This is Part 2 of our work aimed at classifying the long-time behavior of the solution to a free boundary problem with monostable reaction term in space-time periodic media. In Part 1 (see \cite{ddl}) we have established a theory on the existence and uniqueness of solutions to this free boundary problem with continuous initial functions, as well as a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. We are now able to develop the methods of Weinberger \cite{w1, w2} and others \cite{fyz,lyz,lz1,lz2,lui} to prove the existence of asymptotic spreading speed when spreading happens, without knowing a priori the exist…
In this paper we consider a free boundary problem which models the spreading of an invasive species whose spreading is enhanced by the changing climate. We assume that the climate is shifting with speed c and obtain a complete classification of the long-time dynamical behaviour of the species. The model is similar to that in [9] with a slight refinement in the free boundary condition. While [9], like many works in the literature, investigates the case that unfavourable environment is shifting into the favourable habitat of the concerned species, here we examine the situation that the unfavoura…
This paper is concerned with a Lotka-Volterra type competition model with free boundaries in time-periodic environment. One species is assumed to adopt nonlocal dispersal and the other one adopts mixed dispersal, which is a combination of both random dispersal and nonlocal dispersal. We show that this free boundary problem with more general growth functions admits a unique solution defined for all time. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is obtained and criteria for spreading and vanishing are provided. Moreover, under the weak competition condition we provide the long-time asymptotic behavior of…
In this paper, we first consider two scalar nonlocal diffusion problems with a free boundary and a fixed boundary. We obtain the global existence, uniqueness and longtime behaviour of solution of these two problems. The spreading-vanishing dichotomy and sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing are established. We also prove that accelerated spreading could happen if and only if a threshold condition is violated by kernel function. Then we discuss a classical Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model with nonlocal diffusions and a free boundary which can be seen as nonlocal diffusion counterpart of …
We investigate the influence of a shifting environment on the spreading of an invasive species through a model given by the diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary. When the environment is homogeneous and favourable, this model was first studied in Du and Lin \cite{DL}, where a spreading-vanishing dichotomy was established for the long-time dynamics of the species, and when spreading happens, it was shown that the species invades the new territory at some uniquely determined asymptotic speed $c_0>0$. Here we consider the situation that part of such an environment becomes unfavourable,…
We introduce and study a class of free boundary models with "nonlocal diffusion", which are natural extensions of the free boundary models in Du and Lin [17] and elsewhere, where "local diffusion" is used to describe the population dispersal, with the free boundary representing the spreading front of the species. We show that this nonlocal problem has a unique solution defined for all time, and then examine its long-time dynamical behavior when the growth function is of Fisher-KPP type. We prove that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds, though for the spreading-vanishing criteria significant…
In this paper we investigate two free boundary problems for a Lotka-Volterra type competition model in one space dimension. The main objective is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the two competing species spreading via a free boundary. We prove a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the two species either successfully spread to the entire space as time t goes to infinity and survive in the new environment, or they fail to establish and die out in the long run. The long time behavior of the solutions and criteria for spreading and vanishing are also obtained. This paper is an improveme…
In this paper we consider the diffusive competition model with free boundary in the heterogeneous time-periodic environment, in which the variable intrinsic growth rates of invasive and native species may change signs and be "very negative" in a "suitable large region" . The main objective is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the two competing species spreading via a free boundary. We first establish a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the two species either successfully spread to the right-half-space as time $t$ goes to infinity and survive in the new environment, or they fail to e…

In this paper, we consider the diffusive competition problem with a free boundary and sign-changing intrinsic growth rate in heterogeneous time-periodic environment, consisting of an invasive species with density $u$ and a native species with density $v$. We assume that $v$ undergoes diffusion and growth in $R^{N}$ , and $u$ exists initially in a ball $B_{h_0}(0)$, but invades into the environment with spreading front $\{r = h(t)\}$. The effect of the dispersal rate $d_1$, the initial occupying habitat $h_0$, the initial density $u_0$ of invasive species $u$, and the parameter $μ$ (see (1.3)) …
We investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection equation of the form $u_t-u_{xx}+βu_x=f(u)$ $(t>0,\,0<x<h(t))$ with mixed boundary condition at $x=0$ and a free boundary condition at $x=h(t)$. Such a model may be applied to describe the dynamical process of a new or invasive species adopting a combination of random movement and advection upward or downward along the resource gradient, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. The goal of this paper is to understand the effect of advection environment and no flux across the left boundary on the dynamics of this species. When $|β|<c…
This paper concerns a diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary and sign-changing intrinsic growth rate in heterogeneous time-periodic environment, in which the variable intrinsic growth rate may be "very negative" in a "suitable large region". Such a model can be used to describe the spreading of a new or invasive species, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. In the case of higher space dimensions with radial symmetry and the intrinsic growth rate has a positive lower bound, this problem has been studied by Du, Guo and Peng . They established a spreading-vanishing d…
We consider a class of cooperative reaction-diffusion systems with free boundaries in one space dimension, where the diffusion terms are nonlocal, given by integral operators involving suitable kernel functions, and they are allowed not to appear in some of the equations in the system. The problem is monostable in nature, resembling the well known Fisher-KPP equation. Such a system covers various models arising from mathematical biology, with the Fisher-KPP equation as the simplest special case, where a "spreading-vanishing" dichotomy is known to govern the long time dynamical behaviour. The q…
It is known that a species dies out in the long run for small initial data if its evolution obeys a reaction of bistable nonlinearity. Such a phenomenon, which is termed as the strong Allee effect, is well supported by numerous evidence from ecosystems, mainly due to the environmental pollution as well as unregulated harvesting and hunting. To save an endangered species, in this paper we introduce a protection zone that is governed by a Fisher-KPP nonlinearity, and examine the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion model with strong Allee effect and protection zone. We show the existence of two crit…
A mutualist model with nonlocal diffusions and a free boundary is first considered. We prove that this problem has a unique solution defined $t\ge0$, and its dynamics are governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Some criteria for spreading and vanishing are also given. Of particular importance is that we find that the solution of this problem has quite rich longtime behaviors, which vary with the conditions satisfied by kernel functions and are much different from those of the counterpart with local diffusion and free boundary. At last, we extend these results to the model with nonlocal di…

We consider an epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and free boundaries, which describes the evolution of an infectious agents with nonlocal diffusion and the infected humans without diffusion, where humans get infected by the agents, and infected humans in return contribute to the growth of the agents. The model can be viewed as a nonlocal version of the free boundary model studied by Ahn, Beak and Lin \cite{ABL2016}, with its origin tracing back to Capasso et al. \cite{CP1979, CM1981}. We prove that the problem has a unique solution defined for all $t>0$, and its long-time dynamical behavi…
We study the diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary in timeperiodic environment. To understand the effect of the dispersal rate $d$, the original habitat radius $h_0$, the spreading capability $μ$, and the initial density $u_0$ on the dynamics of the problem, we divide the time-periodic habitat into two cases: favorable habitat and unfavorable habitat. By choosing $d$, $h_0$, $μ$ and $u_0$ as variable parameters, we obtain a spreading-vanishing dichotomy and sharp criteria for the spreading and vanishing in time-periodic environment. We introduce the principal eigenvalue $λ_1(d, α, γ…
We study a class of free boundary systems with nonlocal diffusion, which are natural extensions of the corresponding free boundary problems of reaction diffusion systems. As before the free boundary represents the spreading front of the species, but here the population dispersal is described by "nonlocal diffusion" instead of "local diffusion". We prove that such a nonlocal diffusion problem with free boundary has a unique global solution, and for models with Lotka-Volterra type competition or predator-prey growth terms, we show that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds, and obtain criteria f…
This paper is concerned with the long-time dynamics of an epidemic model whose diffusion and reaction terms involve nonlocal effects described by suitable convolution operators, and the epidemic region is represented by an evolving interval enclosed by the free boundaries in the model. In Wang and Du \cite{WangDu-JDE}, it was shown that the model is well-posed, and its long-time dynamical behaviour is governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. The spreading speed was investigated in a subsequent work of Wang and Du \cite{WangDu-DCDS-A}, where a threshold condition for the diffusion kernels $…
In this paper, we consider the diffusive competition problem consisting of an invasive species with density $u$ and a native species with density $v$. We assume that $v$ undergoes diffusion and growth in $[0, \infty)$, and $u$ exists initially in $[0, h_0)$, but invades into the environment with spreading front ${x=h(t)}$. To understand the effect of the dispersal rate $d_1$, the initial occupying habitat $h_0$, the initial density $u_{0}(x)$ of invasive species $(u)$, and the parameter $μ$ (the ratio of the invasion speed of the free boundary and the invasive species gradient at the expanding…
In this paper, we propose a novel free boundary problem to model the movement of single species with a range boundary. The spatial movement and birth/death processes of the species found within the range boundary are assumed to be governed by the classic Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, while the movement of a free boundary describing the range limit is assumed to be influenced by the weighted total population inside the range boundary and is described by an integro-differential equation. Our free boundary equation is a generalization of the classical Stefan problem that allows for nonl…
In this paper we consider the diffusive competition model consisting of an invasive species with density $u$ and a native species with density $v$, in a radially symmetric setting with free boundary. We assume that $v$ undergoes diffusion and growth in $\R^N$, and $u$ exists initially in a ball $\{r<h(0)\}$, but invades into the environment with spreading front $\{r=h(t)\}$, with $h(t)$ evolving according to the free boundary condition $h'(t)=-μu_r(t, h(t))$, where $μ>0$ is a given constant and $u(t,h(t))=0$. Thus the population range of $u$ is the expanding ball $\{r<h(t)\}$, while that for $…
In this paper we investigate a free boundary problem for the diffusive Leslie-Gower prey-predator model with double free boundaries in one space dimension. This system models the expanding of an invasive or new predator species in which the free boundaries represent expanding fronts of the predator species. We first prove the existence, uniqueness and regularity of global solution. Then provide a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the predator species either successfully spreads to infinity as $t\to\infty$ at both fronts and survives in the new environment, or it spreads within a bounded ar…

We consider a degenerate chemotaxis model with two-species and two-stimuli in dimension $d\geq 3$ and find two critical curves intersecting at one same point which separate the global existence and blow up of weak solutions to the problem. More precisely, above these curves (i.e. subcritical case), the problem admits a global weak solution obtained by the limits of strong solutions to an approximated system. Based on the second moment of solutions, initial data are constructed to make sure blow up occurs in finite time below these curves (i.e. critical and supercritical cases). In addition, th…
