Potential features in the primordial power spectrum have been searched for in galaxy surveys in recent years since these features can assist in understanding the nature of inflation. The null detection to date suggests that any such features should be fairly weak, and next-generation galaxy surveys, with their unprecedented sizes and precisions, are in a position to place stronger constraints than before. However, even if such primordial features once existed in the early Universe, they would have been significantly damped in the nonlinear regime at low redshift due to structure formation, which makes them difficult to be directly detected in real observations. A potential way to tackle this challenge for probing the features is to undo the cosmological evolution, i.e., using reconstruction to obtain an approximate linear density field. By employing a set of N-body simulations, here we show that a recently-proposed nonlinear reconstruction algorithm can effectively retrieve damped oscillatory features from halo catalogues and improve the accuracy of the measurement of feature parameters (assuming that such primordial features do exist). We do a Fisher analysis to forecast how nonlinear reconstruction affects the constraining power, and find that it can lead to significantly more robust constraints on the feature amplitude for a DESI-like survey. Comparing nonlinear reconstruction with other ways of improving constraints, such as increasing the survey volume and range of scales, this shows that it is possible to achieve what the latter do, but at a lower cost.
The properties of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales are still unknown while those on large scales have been well probed by the observations of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the large scale structure. In this paper, we propose the reconstruction method of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales through the merger rate of binary primordial black holes, which could form from large primordial curvature perturbation on small scales.
We investigate the amount of primordial information that can be reconstructed from spectroscopic galaxy surveys, as well as what sets the noise in reconstruction at low wavenumbers, by studying a simplified universe in which galaxies are the Zeldovich displaced Lagrangian peaks in the linear density field. For some of this study, we further take an intuitive linearized limit in which reconstruction is a convex problem but where the solution is also a solution to the full nonlinear problem, a limit that bounds the effectiveness of reconstruction. The linearized reconstruction results in similar…
We study the effect of the nonlinear relation between density and curvature perturbations on the formation of PBHs. By calculating the variance and skewness of the density perturbation we derive the non-Gaussian property. As a criterion for PBH formation, the compaction function is used and it is found that larger curvature perturbations are required due to the nonlinear effect. We estimate the PBH abundance based on the Press-Schechter formalism with non-Gaussian probability density function during Radiation dominated era. It is found that the nonlinear effect slightly suppresses the PBH form…
Large-scale Fourier modes of the cosmic density field are of great value for learning about cosmology because of their well-understood relationship to fluctuations in the early universe. However, cosmic variance generally limits the statistical precision that can be achieved when constraining model parameters using these modes as measured in galaxy surveys, and moreover, these modes are sometimes inaccessible due to observational systematics or foregrounds. For some applications, both limitations can be circumvented by reconstructing large-scale modes using the correlations they induce between…
As a candidate bound for the Binary Black Hole (BBH) merger events detected by LIGO/Virgo, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) provide a useful tool to investigate the primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. Using the GWTC-1 to GWTC-3 catalogs, under the scenario that PBHs originate from large primordial curvature perturbations on small scales during inflationary epoch, we for the first time reconstruct the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. It is found that the value of the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum is enhanced to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})…
We present three non-parametric Bayesian primordial reconstructions using Planck 2018 polarization data: linear spline primordial power spectrum reconstructions, cubic spline inflationary potential reconstructions and sharp-featured primordial power spectrum reconstructions. All three methods conditionally show hints of an oscillatory feature in the primordial power spectrum in the multipole range $\ell\sim20$ to $\ell\sim50$, which is to some extent preserved upon marginalization. We find no evidence for deviations from a pure power law across a broad observable window ($50\lesssim\ell\lesssi…
The next-generation CMB experiments are expected to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ with high precision. Delensing is an important process as the observed CMB $B$-mode polarization that contains the primordial tensor perturbation signal is dominated by a much larger contribution due to gravitational lensing. To do so successfully, it is useful to explore methods for lensing reconstruction beyond the traditional quadratic estimator (QE) (which will become suboptimal for the next-generation experiments), and the maximum a posterior estimator (which is still currently under development).…
The large enhancement of the primordial power spectrum of the curvature perturbation can seed the formation of primordial black hole, that can play as a dark matter component in the Universe. In multi-filed inflation models, the curved trajectory of the scalar fields in the field space can generate a peak in the power spectrum on small scales due to the existence of the isocurvature perturbation. Here we show that a potential can be reconstructed from a given power spectrum, which is made of a scale-invariant one on large scales and the other function with a peak on small scales. In multi-fiel…
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation B mode polarization signal contains the unique signature of primordial metric perturbations produced during the inflation. The separation of the weak CMB B-mode signal from strong foreground contamination in observed maps is a complex task, and proposed new generation low noise satellite missions compete with the weak signal level of this gravitational background. In this article, for the first time, we employ a foreground model-independent internal linear combination (ILC) method to reconstruct the CMB B mode signal using simulated observations …

Galaxy angular momentum directions (spins) are observable, well described by the Lagrangian tidal torque theory, and proposed to probe the primordial universe. They trace the spins of dark matter halos, and are indicators of protohalos properties in Lagrangian space. We define a Lagrangian spin parameter and tidal twist parameters and quantify their influence on the spin conservation and predictability in the spin mode reconstruction in $N$-body simulations. We conclude that protohalos in a more tidal twisting environments are preferentially more rotation-supported, and more likely to conserve…
We use the modified Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm to reconstruct the Primordial Power Spectrum from the Weak Lensing Power spectrum reconstructed from the CMB anisotropies. This provides an independent window to observe and constrain the PPS $P_R(k)$ along different $k$ scales as compared to CMB Temperature Power Spectrum. The Weak Lensing Power spectrum does not contain secondary variations in power and hence is cleaner, unlike the Temperature Power spectrum which suffers from lensing which is visible in its PPS reconstructions. We demonstrate that the physical behaviour of the weak…
Galaxy bispectrum is a promising probe of inflationary physics in the early universe as a measure of primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG), whereas its signal-to-noise ratio is significantly affected by the mode coupling due to non-linear gravitational growth. In this paper, we examine the standard reconstruction method of linear cosmic mass density fields from non-linear galaxy density fields to de-correlate the covariance in redshift-space galaxy bispectra. In particular, we evaluate the covariance of the bispectrum for massive-galaxy-sized dark matter halos with reconstruction by using 4000 inde…
It has been recently established that, if the nonlinear relationship between the overdensity perturbations and the curvature perturbations are taken into account, non-Gaussianity is introduced in the overdensity statistics which alters the expected primordial black hole abundance. This is explored by using the nonlinear relationship between the overdensities and curvature perturbations up to second order where a negative skewness and positive kurtosis aims at lowering and increasing the abundance while an abundance comparable to Gaussian perturbations is obtained by adjusting the amplitude of …
This work presents the first comprehensive study of structure formation at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation over $1.4\leq z \leq 3.6$ in the COSMOS field, including the most massive high redshift galaxy proto-clusters at that era. We apply the extended COSMIC BIRTH algorithm to account for a multi-tracer and multi-survey Bayesian analysis at Lagrangian initial cosmic times. Combining the data of five different spectroscopic redshift surveys (zCOSMOS-deep, VUDS, MOSDEF, ZFIRE, and FMOS-COSMOS), we show that the corresponding unbiased primordial density fields can be inferred, if a proper…
