We generalize soft theorems of the nonlinear sigma model beyond the $\mathcal{O} (p^2)$ amplitudes and the coset of $\text{SU} (N) \times \text{SU} (N) / \text{SU} (N) $. We first discuss the universal flavor ordering of the amplitudes for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons, so that we can reinterpret the known $\mathcal{O} (p^2)$ single soft theorem for $\text{SU} (N) \times \text{SU} (N) / \text{SU} (N) $ in the context of a general symmetry group representation. We then investigate the special case of the fundamental representation of $\text{SO} (N)$, where a special flavor ordering of the "pair basis" is available. We provide novel amplitude relations and a Cachazo-He-Yuan formula for such a basis, and derive the corresponding single soft theorem. Next, we extend the single soft theorem for a general group representation to $\mathcal{O} (p^4)$, where for at least two specific choices of the $\mathcal{O} (p^4)$ operators, the leading non-vanishing pieces can be interpreted as new extended theory amplitudes involving bi-adjoint scalars, and the corresponding soft factors are the same as at $\mathcal{O} (p^2)$. Finally, we compute the general formula for the double soft theorem, valid to all derivative orders, where the leading part in the soft momenta is fixed by the $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$ Lagrangian, while any possible corrections to the subleading part are determined by the $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ Lagrangian alone. Higher order terms in the derivative expansion do not contribute any new corrections to the double soft theorem.
We explore the four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell landscape as a toy model in which we can formulate a sphere compactification stabilized by an electromagnetic field. Replacing the compactification sphere by J spheres, we obtain a simple sector of the (2J+2)-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell landscape. In this toy model, we analyze some properties which are very difficult to uncover in the string theory landscape, including: complete moduli stabilization, stability conditions, and state counting. We also show how to construct anthropic states in this model. A detailed comparison between the main fea…
The purpose of this work is to present some basic concepts about the non-linear sigma model in a simple and direct way. We start with showing the bosonic model and the Wess-Zumino-Witten term, making some comments about its topological nature, and its association with the torsion. It is also shown that to cancel the quantum conformal anomaly the model should obey the Einstein equations. We provide a quick introduction about supersymmetry in chapter 2 to help the understanding the supersymmetric extension of the model. In the last chapter we present the supersymmetric model and its equations of…
We investigate the energy landscape of two- and three-dimensional XY models with nearest-neighbor interactions by analytically constructing several classes of stationary points of the Hamiltonian. These classes are analyzed, in particular with respect to possible signatures of the thermodynamic phase transitions of the models. We find that, even after explicitly breaking the global O(2) symmetry of the XY spins, an exponentially large class of stationary points are singular and occur in continuous one-parameter families. This property may complicate the use of theoretical tools developed for t…
We study the existence of realistic heterotic vacua on a new Abelian surface fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X with Z_8 x Z_8 fundamental group. Our main result is a no-go theorem, which says that (under mild assumptions) there is no stable holomorphic vector bundle on X satisfying the constraints required by global consistency of the heterotic vacuum and phenomenology. To prove the theorem we explore in some detail the Fourier-Mukai transform of vector bundles on Abelian surface fibrations.
We explore inflationary trajectories within randomly-generated two-dimensional potentials, considered as a toy model of the string landscape. Both the background and perturbation equations are solved numerically, the latter using the two-field formalism of Peterson and Tegmark which fully incorporates the effect of isocurvature perturbations. Sufficient inflation is a rare event, occurring for only roughly one in $10^5$ potentials. For models generating sufficient inflation, we find that the majority of runs satisfy current constraints from WMAP. The scalar spectral index is less than 1 in all…
Compactifications of the heterotic string on special T^d/Z_2 orbifolds realize a landscape of string models with 16 supercharges and a gauge group on the left-moving sector of reduced rank d+8. The momenta of untwisted and twisted states span a lattice known as the Mikhailov lattice II_{(d)}, which is not self-dual for d > 1. By using computer algorithms which exploit the properties of lattice embeddings, we perform a systematic exploration of the moduli space for d=1 and 2, and give a list of maximally enhanced points where the U(1)^{d+8} enhances to a rank d+8 non-Abelian gauge group. For d …
We classified in arXiv:2201.04152 certain 10d supergravity solutions with a 4d de Sitter, Minkowski or anti-de Sitter spacetime. We then found new solutions in previously unexplored classes. In this paper we study their properties, compare them to swampland conjectures, and make new observations. Using new numerical tools, we first identify all Lie algebras underlying the 6d group manifolds, allowing us to discuss their compactness. We then investigate scale separation, and prove related no-go theorems. Last but not least, we automatize and analyze the stability of all solutions. This leads us…

In this thesis we provide new tools to determine and explore the Landscape of four-dimensional effective field theories originating from string and M-theory. The main aim is to introduce, within four-dimensional effective descriptions, elements that are predicted from string theory. To this end, a hierarchy of forms is introduced within the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity theories. The inclusion of gauge three-forms delivers a dynamical way to generate flux-induced superpotentials. Instead, gauge two-forms, dual descriptions of axions, may be eventually gauged by three-forms to g…
We use an exactly solvable (0,2) supersymmetric conformal field theory with gauge group SO(10) to investigate the superpotential of the corresponding classical string vacuum. We provide evidence that the rational point lies in the Landau-Ginzburg phase of the linear sigma-model and calculate exactly all three- and four-point functions of the gauge singlets. These couplings already put severe constraints on the possible flat directions of the superpotential. Finally, we contemplate about the flat direction related to Kahler deformations of the underlying linear sigma-model.
In this paper we formulate the pure spinor superstring theory on AdS_4 x CP^3. By recasting the pure spinor action as a topological A-model on the fermionic supercoset Osp(6|4)/SO(6)xSp(4) plus a BRST exact term, we prove the exactness of the sigma-model. We then give a gauged linear sigma-model which reduces to the superstring in the limit of large volume and we study its branch geometry in different phases. Moreover, we discuss possible D-brane boundary conditions and the principal chiral model for the fermionic supercoset.
Compactifications of the heterotic string on T^d are the simplest, yet rich enough playgrounds to uncover swampland ideas: the U(1)^{d+16} left-moving gauge symmetry gets enhanced at special points in moduli space only to certain groups. We state criteria, based on lattice embedding techniques, to establish whether a gauge group is realized or not. For generic d, we further show how to obtain the moduli that lead to a given gauge group by modifying the method of deleting nodes in the extended Dynkin diagram of the Narain lattice II_{1,17}. More general algorithms to explore the moduli space ar…
In the framework of (0,2) gauged linear sigma models, we systematically generate sets of perturbatively dual heterotic string compactifications. This target space duality is first derived in non-geometric phases and then translated to the level of GLSMs and its geometric phases. In a landscape analysis, we compare the massless chiral spectra and the dimensions of the moduli spaces. Our study includes geometries given by complete intersections of hypersurfaces in toric varieties equipped with SU(n) vector bundles defined via the monad construction.
The single-valued projection (sv) is a relation between scattering amplitudes of gauge bosons in heterotic and open superstring theories. Recently we have studied sv from the aspect of nonlinear sigma models [1], where the gauge physics of open string sigma model is under the Wilson loop representation but the gauge physics of heterotic string sigma model is under the fermionic representation since the Wilson loop representation is absent in the heterotic case. There we showed that the sv comes from a sum of six radial orderings of heterotic vertices on the complex plane. In this paper, we pro…
We study two aspects of fermionic T-duality: the duality in purely fermionic sigma models exploring the possible obstructions and the extension of the T-duality beyond classical approximation. We consider fermionic sigma models as coset models of supergroups divided by their maximally bosonic subgroup OSp(m|n)/SO(m) x Sp(n). Using the non-abelian T-duality and a non-conventional gauge fixing we derive their fermionic T-duals. In the second part of the paper, we prove the conformal invariance of these models at one and two loops using the Background Field Method and we check the Ward Identities…
